Abstract:Along with the development of high energy or high power lasers,especially laser weapon and lasers for controlled nuclear fusion,the laser induced damage threshold of the optical films gradually becomes the bottleneck against the development of the lasers,which is of considerable interest from the world.Laser induced damage mechanism of optical films,test flat and method for laser induced damage threshold were expatiated.The development of researches on the technologies and methods for laser damage resistance of optical films at home and abroad,which included ion beam pretreatment,ion beam or anneal treat-ment,pretest coating with the materials of high refractive index and so on,were analyzed.The pulsed laser deposition with mag-netic filter technology was emphasized in the expectation,and the atom layer deposition was advised to accelerate to develop, which supplied the theoretic base to improve the laser damage resistance of optical films to settle for current requirements.
Safety Analysis for Laser-based Optical Wireless Communications: A Tutorial

Abstract:Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (laser) sources have many advantages for use in high data rate optical wireless communications. In particular, the low cost and high-bandwidth properties of laser sources such as vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) make them attractive for future indoor optical wireless communications. In order to be integrated into future indoor networks, such lasers should conform to eye safety regulations determined by the international electrotechnical commission (IEC) standards for laser safety. In this paper, we provide a detailed study of beam propagation to evaluate the received power of various laser sources, based on which as well as the maximum permissible exposure (MPE) defined by the IEC 60825-1:2014 standard, we establish a comprehensive framework for eye safety analyses. This framework allows us to calculate the maximum allowable transmit power, which is crucial in the design of a reliable and safe laser-based wireless communication system. Initially, we consider a single-mode Gaussian beam and calculate the maximum permissible transmit power. Subsequently, we generalize this approach for higher-mode beams. It is shown that the M-squared-based approach for analysis of multimode lasers ensures the IEC eye safety limits, however, in some scenarios, it can be too conservative compared to the precise beam decomposition method. Laser safety analyses with consideration of optical elements such as lens and diffuser, as well as for VCSEL array have been also presented. Skin safety, as another significant factor of laser safety, has also been investigated in this paper. We have studied the impacts of various parameters such as wavelength, exposure duration and the divergence angle of laser sources on the safety analysis by presenting insightful results.

Abstract:A laser correlation study of irradiation damage is carried out on the basis of anodized functional films with the aim of improving the stray light absorptivity in the framework of high-energy laser systems and reducing the contamination of the system after irradiation damage. An experimental study is performed to investigate the effect of different laser characteristics (wavelength, spot diameter, energy and incident angle) on the damage of functional films. On this basis, the damage evolution process was analyzed using ABAQUS secondary development and was in good agreement with the experimental results. In addition, the damage mechanism of the film system is discussed. This study can provide guidance for the optimization of the functional film system, as well as a reference for the design of the main optical path of the high-energy laser system.

Abstract:High-performance and cost-effective laser protection system is of crucial importance for the rapid advance of lasers in military and civilian fields leading to severe damages of human eyes and sensitive optical devices. However, it is crucially hindered by the angle-dependent protective effect and the complex preparation process. Here we demonstrate that angle-independence, good processibility, wavelength tunability, high optical density and good visibility can be effectuated simultaneously, by embedding dichroic anthraquinone dyes in a cholesteric liquid crystal matrix. More significantly, unconventional two-dimensional parabolic protection behavior is reported for the first time that in stark contrast to the existing protection systems, the overall parabolic protection behavior enables protective effect to increase with incident angles, hence providing omnibearing high-performance protection. The protective effect is controllable by dye concentration, LC cell thickness and CLC reflection efficiency, and the system can be made flexible enabling applications in flexible and even wearable protection devices. This research creates a promising avenue for the high-performance and cost-effective laser protection, and may foster the development of optical applications such as solar concentrators, car explosion-proof membrane, smart windows and polarizers.

Abstract:High-power fiber lasers have seen astonishingly rapid progress over the last decade.All-fiber laser systems are preferred for simplicity,compactness,robustness and reliability.Characterized by intrinsically low transmission loss,fused components are referred to the optimum choices.Losses can lead to catastrophic component failure due to localized heating at high power levels.The most meaningful benchmark,when considering the power handling of the component,is the capability of the component to handle optical power loss,rather than transmitted power.Design criterions of low transmission loss are described both in single-mode components and multi-mode components.Some advices about package design are proposed.

Abstract:The characteristics of laser induced damage morphology in the bulk of the K9 glass caused by focused nanosecond laser pulse is analyzed in detail. The damage shape looks like a spindle with a large front-end and its thickness gradually decreases on going to the rear end. According to the experimental results, the damaged range can be divided into four zones, namely the filamentary plasma channel, fractures, the fusion zone and the region of varying refractive index. The function of laser pulse energy deposition in space and the expansion pressure of shock wave are deduced, and the corresponding damage morphology is analyzed based on the spatial distribution of pressure. The theoretical analysis agrees with the experimental results.
Application of Laser in Surface Technology —An Overview of the Research Work Performed in SKLT

Abstract:Since its discovery in 1960, laser has been widely used in many fields due to its advantages like directivity, monochromaticity, coherence and etc.. When a laser beam interacts with material surfaces, various effects could be obtained depending on the types and the working parameters of the laser used. Geometric property and micro-structure of surfaces could be changed, material ablation and other surface effects could be caused. In this presentation, an overview of the research work on laser surface modification recently performed in the State Key Laboratory of Tribology at Tsinghua University was given. Microstructure of laser treated steel was investigated. A soft band between the melted zone and the transformation hardened zone was detected, and the formation mechanism was analyzed. Aiming at obtaining a smoother surface, experimental investigation on laser polishing was carried out and influence of laser processing parameters on surface morphology of tool steel was studied. Taking into account the original surface morphology, a model of laser polishing of metallic materials was developed based on the theory of heat transfer and experimental results. Progress in laser assisted thin film deposition technique (laser induced arc deposition) was introduced. With the improved technique, film thickness could be controlled very precisely. Multi-layer films used as film sensor were deposited. A method of laser surface modification was presented, by laser induced chemical reactions, suraface textures could be formed and meanwhile, desirable new substances could also be produced in the laser irradiated zone. Textures were produced on the surface of Ti in the environment of nitrogen gas and ammonia gas, respectively. Results of experiment and analysis showed that TiN was formed in the textured area due to the laser induced chemical reaction, which significantly improved the anti wear property of Ti surface. A method newly developed for laser surface texturing based on optical fiber focusing was also introduced. Using the mehod, surface textures of micrometer scale were produced. Research work on laser cladding of quasi-crystalline coatings and laser re-melting of plasma sprayed ceramic coatings was presented. Examples of development of industrial products based on the application of laser were also introduced. Prospect of laser application in surface technology was made. Laser is an important and effective tool in surface modification. Being combined with other methods, laser could find its role in developing new techniques of surface modifications.

Abstract:Some key issues in the process of simulating millisecond laser damage to K9 glass based on Multiphysics field simulation are analyzed through several aspects such as the establishment and meshing of the millisecond laser damage K9 glass finite element model, loading of the pulsed laser, setting the initial conditions and boundary conditions. The finite element model of K9 glass damaged by millisecond laser was established, and the temperature and stress distribution of K9 glass irradiated by millisecond laser were numerically analyzed. The calculation results show that the spot radius and pulse frequency have a greater influence on the damage effect, the higher the frequency, the greater the thermal stress generated, and the stronger the damage effect; the larger the laser spot radius, the smaller the thermal stress generated, and the weaker the damage effect. Therefore, the laser damage threshold will be the spot radius, the pulse frequency of the regular change, that is, with the pulse frequency and spot radius increases, the damage threshold decreases.

Preliminary Study on Hazard of Hard X-ray Radiation Produced in Interaction Between High Intensity Laser and Solid Target

Abstract:With the rapid development of laser technology,a number of high intensity laser devices are emerging in China and other countries.At the same time,the hazard induced by the radiation produced in the interaction between high intensity laser and solid target has gradually been observed and attention has been paid to this hazard.In this paper,the physical process and character of the interaction between laser with high intensity and solid target were analyzed through extensive research.The parameters of the radiation sources were discussed,including the energy conversion efficiency of laser-electronic,thermal electron energy spectrum and electron temperature,the energy spectrum of hard X-ray produced by thermal electron,etc.Then the primary assessment of the resulting X-ray dose due to the interaction between the laser and the target with the laser intensity in 1014 to 1020 W/cm2were obtained.Finally,as an example the preliminary design of the radiation safety system for a laser device at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center(SLAC) was described.The results of this study provide a reference for the radiation safety assessment and safety system design for strong laser devices.

Abstract:Thermal and mechanical breakage is the key factor of laser damage on optical and photoelectric elements. The thermal-mechanical model of optical materials, optical and photoelectric elements induced by high power laser is set up based on laser-material interaction mechanism, and the transient temperature field distribution and thermal stress field induced by laser are analyzed through resolving the heat conduction equation. The numerical simulation and experimental research of laser induced thermal and mechanical breakage on K9 glass, diamond-like carbon films, glue lens and HgCdTe detector are carried out.
[Classification of laser irradiation and safety measures]

Abstract:The use of lasers in medicine and especially surgery is rapidly expanding in many disciplines from clinical laboratory to the office practice and operating room. It is essential that users of this powerful tool have knowledge of their potential hazards and the measures to protect patients and personnel against injuries or undesired effects. Below, we have included information about the way lasers are classified; the development of protective standards; the current status of protection standards that apply to lasers, especially those used in medicine/surgery; the specific kinds of hazards associated with medical/surgical applications; and the measures by which hazards have been controlled. Since laser technology is still a young field, it is likely that problems unknown at present will occur and methodologies for controlling hazards will evolve. The American National Standards Committee produced the first consensus standard Z136.1 in 1973. The Standard was revised in 1976 to accommodate differences in biological effects for different wavelengths in the visible spectrum. The ANSI Standard has been revised again in 1980, and currently (1984) there are two additional standards in preparation, Z136.2 and 136.3, which treat the safe use of light-emitting diodes and the safe use of lasers in the health care environment, respectively. Most surgical and medical lasers are Class III or IV. Some lasers have a Class IV therapy level beam plus a Class I or II alignment beam. When using lasers, it is possible to generate incandescence or fluorescence in an irradiated object. This can occur even with protective eyewear, because the correlated radiations are usually of a different wavelength. Generally, this should not be a problem when beams are directed at biological material. However, hazard could be caused by lasers designed to produce fluorescence. Control of correlative radiation in a laser system is required in the federal regulations. Hazards of lasers may be grouped as those to the eye, skin and associated hazards, fire, x-rays, electrical, fumes, toxic materials, etc. Effects on tissue are governed by the following factors:--the energy or power density of the beam;--the absorption in tissue at the laser wavelength;--the time the beam is held at a given area.;--the protective effects of heat removal by thermal conduction and by circulation. Eye hazards include thermal burns or acoustical disruption (shock waves) from high-powered or high-energy beams in the visible and near infrared wavelengths. Direct beam exposure or specular or diffuse reflaction from these very high-power lasers can also cause injuries to other parts of the retina. For example, beams can directly penetrate through the sclera and cause retinal injury. Near ultraviolet (less than 400 hm) and far infrared (.3000 hm including CO2 lasers) can cause moderate to severe corneal burns. Far ultraviolet (200-315 nm), mid infrared (1400-3000 nanometers) can cause welders' flash or snow blindness and chronic exposure could cause cataract, and exposure to ultraviolet rays may be carcinogenic. For CO2 lasers, the far infrared radiation is attenuated by plastic goggles, or by glasses, or quartz. Other eyewear with special filters is used for different lasers. The whole personnel who may be exposed to direct beams, specular reflections, and many times diffuse reflections must wear protective eyewear. In all cases the surgeon and others viewing the procedure through the endoscope need glasses or suitable protective lenses installed in the endoscope. Persons who are not viewing the beam may not need to wear protective glasses with the same level of optical density. Glasses may be selected to provide protection for lasers operating in the visible wavelength to the point where the normal aversion response could protect the individual.

Abstract:The output window of a high-power laser system is vulnerable to damage, and this is the main limiting factor on the power scaling and structure integrity of the laser system. In endeavoring to obtain higher output powers from the laser system, the impact of the thermal and mechanical effects and the damage mechanism of the output window must be considered. In order to study these issues, a thermal model of the laser window is established based on the heat transfer and thermoelastic theories, and the expressions for the transient thermal and mechanical stress distributions of the output window are deduced in terms of the integral-transform method. Taking the infrared quartz window material as an example, the temperature and mechanical field distributions of a high-power all-solid-state 2-mu m laser system window are simulated, and the laser-induced damage mechanism is deeply analyzed. The calculation results show that the laser window-induced damage is mainly caused by melting damage when the temperature exceeds the melting point of the material. The presented theoretical analysis and numerical simulation results are significant for the design and optimization of high-power laser windows. (C) The Authors. Design and Comparison of Laser Windows for High-Power Lasers

Abstract:High-power laser systems are getting more and more widely used in industry and military affairs. It is necessary to develop a high-power laser system which can operate over long periods of time without appreciable degradation in performance. When a high-energy laser beam transmits through a laser window, it is possible that the permanent damage is caused to the window because of the energy absorption by window materials. So, when we design a high-power laser system, a suitable laser window material must be selected and the laser damage threshold of the window must be known. In this paper, a thermal analysis model of high-power laser window is established, and the relationship between the laser intensity and the thermal-stress field distribution is studied by deducing the formulas through utilizing the integral-transform method. The influence of window radius, thickness and laser intensity on the temperature and stress field distributions is analyzed. Then, the performance of K9 glass and the fused silica glass is compared, and the laser-induced damage mechanism is analyzed. Finally, the damage thresholds of laser windows are calculated. The results show that compared with K9 glass, the fused silica glass has a higher damage threshold due to its good thermodynamic properties. The presented theoretical analysis and simulation results are helpful for the design and selection of high-power laser windows.

Abstract:Laser has been used clinically as a therapeutic tool for at least twenty years and has achieved good clinical results. An understanding of optical properties of tissue is important for these applications. However, applying the rigorous electromagnetic theory to analyze light propagation in tissue is almost impossible. Therefore, several approximate analysis approaches to model the light propagation in tissue were introduced. In this study we tried to measure the power of diffuse light on body surface non-invasively and brought the data into comparison. Five positions which the superficial tissues are different were selected and Automation Control Technology was used to improve measurement efficiency and accuracy. Our study suggests that the distributions of diffuse light along different paths on the surface of skin are conformed to exponential attenuation law but the attenuation coefficients are different. Otherwise, the exponential attenuation coefficient of the same position is also influenced by the gender of subject.
Study on Laser-Stricken Damage to Alumina Ceramic Layer of Different Surface Roughness

Abstract:This study examines the laser-stricken damage to different alumina ceramic surfaces of different roughness through multi-physical field coupling simulations and laser-striking experiments. The surfaces of different morphologies can be described by waves of different frequencies and amplitudes, and the waves which are discretized can be described by rectangular microstructures of different heights. In this paper, we found that the reaction of roughness surfaces to gauss lasers stricken on them could be simulated by the reaction of rectangular microstructures of different heights to laser strike. The simulation was carried out through the multi-physical field coupling method. The distribution of temperature and stress on rectangular microstructure were examined after being treated by high energy laser. It was found that overhigh temperature and stress were the main causes of laser-stricken damage, but there existed a critical rectangular column height value. The microstructure became increasingly prone to damage and fall-off with the increase of the rectangular column's height, but it became decreasingly prone to damage after the rectangular column reached the critical value. In the experiments, seven roughness zones of alumina ceramic layer were chosen as sample surfaces for laser-striking experiment. The results showed that there was a critical roughness value at a fixed laser energy density. As a result, the amount of particles falling off the surfaces caused by laser strike was rising when the roughness was increasing. However, the amount of particles falling off the surfaces was decreasing after roughness reached the critical value. The critical rectangular column height value in the simulation corresponded to the critical roughness value in the experiment. Therefore, an appropriate selection of roughness is an important factor for obtaining high laser-stricken damage threshold.

Abstract:Stray light absorption glass to improve high-energy laser systems’ service life becomes a meaningful method. The relationship between microstructure of the surface of absorption glass and laser-induced damage is crucial and still not fully understood. This paper investigates the effect of depth and width of V-shaped microstructure surface on the thermal field of absorption glass by establishing an electromagnetic heat coupling model. The graphs that represent individual conditions versus extreme temperature are achieved. The thermal distribution of the depth-to-width ratio in this microstructure which could avoid the higher temperature is mapped.
