Abstract:As a novel method for dealing material,cryogenic treatment has attracted much attention in the past decades,while the mechanisms for cryogenic treatment in improving material performance is not clearly understood.The coupling of material performance with temperature variation process needs further research work,for which the heat transfer analysis will be its fundamental tool.Inverse heat transfer analysis is considered as a feasible method for investigating the heat transfer problems in cryogenic treatment.After a detailed description of the definition and solving method of inverse heat conduction problem,its primary application in heat transfer analysis and the potential problems in analyzing cryogenic treatment process will be discussed and presented.

Abstract:Objective: The nursing technique of intravenous dripping hypothermia liquid was used to treat central hyperthermia.This study was to test the effect of intravenous dripping hypothermia liquid on treatment central hyperthemia. Methods:30 healthy volunteers and 30 central hyperthermia patients were tested with intravenous dripping hypothermia liquid by searching chinese and forgein liferatures between Jan , 1983 and oct ,1994 as well as between Jan , 1989 and Jan ,1999. Results: There was sign ificant difference ( P 0.05) ,The efficieney rate was 100%. Conclusion: Intravenous dripping hypothermia liqnid was effective, safety and advanced nuring techniques.

Abstract:There are many factors that may affect the microenvironment of acute and chronic wounds.This article reviews the relationship between temperature factor in the external microenvironment of wound surface and wound healing.The temperature changes in different types and stages of wounds are closely related to the wound healing status.Therefore,wound temperature monitoring provides timely,reliable,and non-invasive method in the evaluation of wound status.As low temperature affects the physiological state of wound,relieving the low temperature state and maintaining normal temperature of the microenvironment of wound can promote wound healing.Further research is needed on the wound repair related effector cell proliferation and the mechanism of regulatory function to determine the optimal constant temperature and heat treatment duration needed for wound healing.
A Study on Vessel Wall Shrinkage and Tissue Damage of Compressed Vascular Using Therapeutic Ultrasound

Abstract:Ultrasound therapy has been proven to be a method of ablating diseased blood vessels. Currently, experiments have proven that external pressure on the vascular region to be treated can effectively improve the success rate of closure. However, the degree of resulting thermal damage to surrounding tissue and the reason for the effects of compression on the shrinkage of tissue-encased blood vessels remain unclear. To address this issue, we conducted a study comparing the rate of shrinkage and surrounding tissue damage of compressed vessels encapsulated in muscle tissue to vessels with normal blood flow before and after treatment using the Simulation experiment and the ex-vivo tissue experiment. The results show that in the simulated model of compressed blood vessels with static blood flow, the temperature rise is significantly higher compared to the model with simulated blood flow. In the ex-vivo tissue experiment, the shrinkage rate of the blood vessel with static blood flow reaches up to 57% after the treatment, while the area of thermal damage is 28.8mm(2). In contrast, in the blood vessel with flowing blood, the vessels undergo almost no shrinkage but still cause 5.16mm(2) of thermal damage to the surrounding tissue. Our findings confirm that compressing the vessel is an effective and necessary step for the ultrasound closure of the vessel. But at the same time, to alleviate additional thermal damage, trying to change the way and position of the compression during treatment may be necessary.

Abstract:Recent studies confirmed the feasibility of interventional whole body hyperthermia (IWBH) through directly heating the blood flow via minimally invasive heating needles. Among the factors to determine successful IWBH, a most challenging task is to in situ monitor the temperatures of the heating needle and the blood running across it. In this paper, an indirect method was developed which can approximately measure the temperatures of the needle while performing its heating role. Meanwhile, the information acquired in the simulated experiments and theoretical analyses was combined to evaluate the temperature variation of the blood during IWBH. Finally, the measurement errors of this method were discussed and the significance of adopting IWBH for efficiently raising the body-core temperature was demonstrated. This study also raised quite a few new fundamental issues related to the heat transfer of large blood vessels.
Thermal Effect of Intravascular MR Imaging Using an MR Imaging-Guidewire: an in Vivo Laboratory and Histopathological Evaluation.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Intravascular magnetic resonance (MR) imaging to guide interventional procedures is a rapidly growing field. A primary concern with these new techniques is their thermal safety. The purpose of this study was to evaluate, in vivo, the thermal effect of an MR imaging-guidewire (MRIG) for intravascular MR imaging (IVMRI).MATERIAL/METHODS:Two indications of potentially adverse local heating were investigated: blood coagulation disorders and pathologic changes in target vessels. Experiments were performed on ten rabbits with a 1.5 T MR scanner. Using a 0.64-mm MRIG as the RF receiver, we imaged the target aorta using a fast spin-echo pulse sequence with an average specific absorption rate (SAR) of 0.6 W/kg. The total MR imaging time was approximately 70 minutes.RESULTS:There were no abnormal value changes of the coagulation factors between pre- and post-IVMRI, no clinical manifestations of blood coagulation disorders, and, histopathologically, no thermal damage in target vessels.CONCLUSIONS:This study demonstrates, from a pathophysiological point of view, the potential safe use of the MR imaging-guidewire for intravascular MR imaging. Further study is required to precisely define the boundaries of these safe operating parameters.

Abstract:Based on the photothermal effect, laser can be used to treat vascular diseases (VD) in clinic of dermatology and ophthalmology. Transient vascular thermal response to laser irradiation during millisecond laser pulse is the key phenomenon in treatment process, which has not been carefully investigated before. In this study, target blood vessels in dorsal skin chamber (DSC) animal model were irradiated by a pulsed 532 nm diode laser and a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser. The directed thermal responses (temperature variation) were recorded by a high-speed infrared thermal camera with a repetition rate of 1000 Hz. The temperature variation during and after single pulse irradiation and multipulse irradiation were investigated. The variation of blood absorption coefficient was explored based on the temperature increment in each laser pulse. The thermal properties of dorsal skin, especially the thermal diffusivity, were evaluated based on the temperature decay after each laser pulse. The interfacial heat transfer between the blood and the surroundings was also calculated based on the thermal images and compared to the correlation proposed before. The results show that the blood absorption to laser will increase by a maximum of 1.9 immediately after blood temperature exceeds threshold value, e.g., 68 o C in both single pulse (pulse duration >100 ms) and multi-pulse laser irradiation. The tissue optical properties (thermal diffusivity) keep almost constant after millisecond laser heating. Also, a general correlation for interfacial heating transfer between blood and surroundings was developed, in which the influences of vessel shape and laser wavelength are incorporated. The interfacial heat transfer between blood and surrounding can be accurately quantified.

Abstract:Heating can enhance gene transfection/expression. We developed a novel endovascular microwave heating source using an MR imaging-guidewire (MRIG) to deliver external microwave energy into the target vessels. We investigated (i) microwave power loss along differently-sized MRIGs; (ii) microwave power distribution around MRIGs; and (iii) temperature increases versus input microwave powers with MRIGs. Then, we evaluated, in vivo, the possibility of using the MR imaging/heating guidewire to generate high-resolution MR images and deliver the controlled therapeutic heat energy into the target vessel wall with histological confirmation. The results showed that the MRIG had no thermal damage to the vessel wall and can be used as an intravascular local heating device. This study has established the groundwork for further efficient management of cardiovascular atherosclerotic diseases using MRI-based vascular gene therapy.
Analysis of the Freezing /thawing Process of Heat Transfer in Living Tissues in Terms of Temperature-dependent Blood Perfusion.

Abstract:Objective To analyze the freezing and thawing process of the tissues based on the Pennes equation with temperature dependent blood perfusion and to test the influences of different parameters for the temperature prediction. Method The finite difference method with variable time step was utilized and iterations were performed to solve the non linear bioheat equation. Result The transient temperature field, the freezing front,the temperature change rate under phase change for different blood perfusion(maximum, temperature dependent, average and zero) under two different surface boundary conditions: fixed freezing temperature(-196℃ -30℃) and fixed cooling rate (8.95℃/min)and the thawing process are numerically predicted. Conclusion Compared with traditional model, the temperature dependent perfusion model is closer to the real in vivo tissue, the differences of the results in freezing/thawing analysis is notable, and the present results are expected to meet the practical need in temperature prediction of the cryosurgery.

Abstract:This paper is dedicated to present a comprehensive investigation on the thermal effects of large blood vessels of human knee joint during topical cooling and fomentation treatment. A three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis by taking full use of the anatomical CAD model of human knee joint was developed to accurately simulate the treatment process. Based on the classical Pennes bio-heat transfer equation, the time evolution of knee joint's temperature distribution and heat flux from large blood vessels was obtained. In addition, we compared several influencing factors and obtained some key conclusions which cannot be easily acquired through clinical experiments. The results indicated that the thermal effects of large blood vessels could remarkably affect the temperature distribution of knee joint during treatment process. Fluctuations of blood flow velocity and metabolic heat production rate affect little on the thermal effects of large blood vessels. Changing the temperature of blood and regimes of treatment could effectively regulate this phenomenon, which is important for many physiological activities. These results provide a guideline to the basic and applied research for the thermally significant large blood vessels in the knee organism.

EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF MECHANISM AND MEASURES OF PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF HYPOTHERMAL VASOCONSTRICTION

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the mechanism and to explore the measures of prevention and treatment of hypothermal vasoconstriction.METHODS:By the techniques of endothelial cell culture and scanning electron microscopy, and vasomotor functional test of isolated vascular vessels, the relation of hypothermal vasoconstriction and the release of endothelium-derived contractile and vasodilative factors were observed.RESULTS:Hypothermia obviously induced vasoconstriction of isolated vascular vessels, whether endothelium was intact or removed, the lower the temperature, the higher the vascular tension. Removal of endothelium could decrease the effect of vasoconstriction by hypothermia. The conditioned medium of bovine aortic endothelial cell could induce significantly vasoconstriction of isolated rat common neck arterial ring in hypothermia. It indicated that the bovine aortic endothelial cells secreted contractile factors into the medium. Reheating to 37 degrees C or vasodilator or reheating plus vasodilator did not obviously influence the hypothermia-induced vasoconstriction within 2 hours. When reheating to 50 degrees C, vascular tension was decreased, but only changed in range of 28% to 42%.CONCLUSION:Hypothermia vasoconstriction is relative to vasoconstrictor factors secreted by endothelium. Reheating to 37 degrees C or vasodilator does not antagonize the constriction of vascular vessels. Reheating to 50 degrees C only partially eliminates the constrict effect of blood vessels, so the prevention of hypothermia vasoconstriction should be emphasized.
Theoretical evaluation on heating efficiency for four typical whole body hyperthermia approaches

Abstract:Efficiently raising patient's body core temperature is an extremely important however challenging issues during the practice of a whole body hyperthermia(WBH)therapy.Up to now,there is no clear understanding on the effects of various currently existing WBH approaches yet.In this paper,theoretical evaluations on four typical WBH heating methods with boundary conditions close to reality were performed using finite element method.The heating efficiencies for these WBH approaches were examined and compared.Technical strategies to further improve the WBH heating performances were suggested.Specially,as the simulation indicates,the method of interior heating appears to have the highest efficiency and is also suitable for clinical operation.Therefore,it would be an important way to develop high-quality WBH equipment in the near future.

Abstract:The treatment of hypothermia suffered by naval fighters owing to seawater immersion has been a focus of research in recent years. Currently, the treatment of hypothermia in China is limited to external rewarming, which is of low efficiency and is not effective for patients suffering moderate to severe hypothermia. We thus proposed a vascular interventional heating method which directly heats the blood flow via a minimally invasive heating needle for rewarming. And a numerical simulation using a compartment model based on finite difference method was conducted. A set of whole body heating treatment simulation was also developed. Appropriate treatment parameters and procedures can be set and adjusted based on patient physical parameters. Here temperature response curves of different heating modes were obtained and analyzed. It was demonstrated that the desired thermal response can be achieved by adjusting the heating power and heating time, ensuring controllable accuracy in the treatment of patients with severe hypothermia. The proposed treatment for hypothermia is a new and effective alternative, and further progress is expected in clinical trials.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the process of conduction of warming acupuncture-produced heat in human tissues by infrared thermography and numerical modeling,which is very important for studying the mechanism of moxibustion therapy.Methods Infrared heat images were recorded with a high sensitivity infrared thermograph in the process of warming acupuncture.The heating effects of gold,silver and stainless steel needles on biological tissues(Zusanli transection of porcine hind leg) were investigated by experiment.The process of conduction of warming acupuncture-produced heat in biological tissues was simulated by numerical modeling with finite element software ANSYS for qualitative and quantitative analyses of tissue eat conduction.The experimental and calculated results of temperature distribution were compared.Results A numerical analysis provided the distribution of temperature and the vectorgram of thermal flow in tissues during warming acupuncture. The experiment observed that the curve of temperature distribution and the result of numerical simulation tallied.The investigation found that if the other conditions were the same,a silver needle conducted heat most rapidly and its maximum value was several times as large as those of gold and stainless steel needles during warming acupuncture.Conclusion Heat passes rapidly mainly along the needle body during warming acupuncture.A silver needle conducts heat most rapidly,raises tissue temperature to a highest degree and transmits heat in a largest range,which prove that warming acupuncture with silver needles produces a best curative effect clinically.In this article,infrared thermography and numerical modeling were used to investigate the process of heat conduction during warming acupuncture and make a quantitative analysis,providing a theoretical and experimental basis for clinical application of different kinds of moxibustion.

Abstract:The whole body hyperthermia (WBH) has been identified as a very promising way to treat malignant tumor. For the homogeneous temperature increase, the challenges remain for hyperthermia device designers to improve the apparatus either to reduce the invasiveness or to improve the heating performance. Among all the mechanisms of biological heat transfer, convection via blood flow serves as a rather efficient way to facilitate delivery of external heat into the human body. In this article, selectively heating vessel-rich-skin to noninvasively induce WBH is comprehensively evaluated The thermally significant blood vessels are grouped into different body segments and their convective heat transfer intensity is investigated The segments with large convective heat transfer intensity were proposed as potential places for allocating external heating applicator. Based on the compartment bio-heat transfer analysis, several existing strategies for WBH are justified and methods for optimizing each of the approaches are proposed in terms of efficiency and invasiveness. Specifically, muti-site extreme heating at hand and foot with 20 W each site will cause core temperature to increase 1 degrees C more during WBH. which as a result would save heating duration time to 0.6 h or 0 3 h, in radiative WBH and interventional WBH respectively. In addition, the irradiative extreme heating can be enhanced by surface cooling such that a 10 degrees C cold pad would double the administrated power and thus achieve 0.3 degrees C more temperature Increase. The principle of focused heating on vessel-rich-skin region noninvasively is expected to Implement both as an excellent auxiliary for existing WBH modalities as well as fundamental optimization rational for multisite noninvasive electromagnetic heating. Abstract:With increased interest in predictive medicine, development of a relatively noninvasive technique that can improve prediction of major clinical outcomes has gained considerable attention. Current tests that are the target of critical evaluation, such as flow-mediated vasodilation of the brachial artery and pulse-wave velocity, are specific to the larger conduit vessels. However, evidence is mounting that functional changes in the microcirculation may be an early sign of globalized microvascular dysfunction. Thus development of a test of microvascular reactivity that could be used to evaluate cardiovascular risk or response to treatment is an exciting area of innovation. This mini-review is focused on tests of microvascular reactivity to thermal stimuli in the cutaneous circulation. The skin may prove to be an ideal site for evaluation of microvascular dysfunction due to its ease of access and growing evidence that changes in skin vascular reactivity may precede overt clinical signs of disease. Evaluation of the skin blood flow response to locally applied heat has already demonstrated prognostic utility, and the response to local cooling holds promise in patients in whom cutaneous disorders are present. Whether either of these tests can be used to predict cardiovascular morbidity or mortality in a clinical setting requires further evaluation.

Abstract:Objective Skin disease is multiple,common disease,and there are so many therapeutic methods.In recent years,physical non-invasive therapy of skin disease has developed rapidly.On the basis of Pennes equation,a series of simulation analysis was completed,and the results confirmed the feasibility and availability as well as the definite safety of curing skin diseases by direct heating.In order to achieve the maximum efficacy and the minimum side effects simultaneously and based on the previous research,exploratory simulation experiment of non-isothermal heating was carried out.Methods The skin temperature fields with non-isothermal heating were simulated by utilizing mathematical tools (Matlab).Results Compared to the previous isothermal heating,during the non-isothermal heating,the temperature of inner skin displayed the rising trend,while it displayed the declining trend during the isothermal heating.Conclusion As compared to isothermal heating,non-isothermal heating has better restraining effect for the bacterium within the inner skin,and less side-effect.

Abstract:Thermoregulation is a process that is essential to the maintenance of life for all warm-blooded mammalian and avian species. It sustains a constant core body temperature in the face of a wide array of environmental thermal conditions and intensity of physical activities that generate internal heat. A primary component of thermoregulatory function is the movement of heat between the body core and the surface via the circulation of blood. The peripheral vasculature acts as a forced convection heat exchanger between blood and local peripheral tissues throughout the body enabling heat to be convected to the skin surface where is may be transferred to and from the environment via conduction, convection, radiation, and/or evaporation of water as local conditions dictate. Humans have evolved a particular vascular structure in glabrous (hairless) skin that is especially well suited for heat exchange. These vessels are called arteriovenous anastomoses (AVAs) and can vasodilate to large diameters and accommodate high flow rates. We report herein a new technology based on a physiological principle that enables simple and safe access to the thermoregulatory control system to allow manipulation of thermoregulatory function. The technology operates by applying a small amount of heating local to control tissue on the body surface overlying the cerebral spine that upregulates AVA perfusion. Under this action, heat exchangers can be applied to glabrous skin, preferably on the palms and soles, to alter the temperature of elevated blood flow prior to its return to the core. Therapeutic and prophylactic applications are discussed.

Abstract:To study the effect of blood perfusion rate and air convection boundary condition upon heat transfer of liver tissues by establishing heat conduction model of liver tissues under laser irradiation.The analytical solution of the model was solved by homogenizing boundary condition and the numerical solution of the bio-heat transfer model under the two-dimensional cylindrical coordinate was calculated by the Finite Element Method (FEM).The results show that the highest temperature irradiated by laser is on the center point of the surface tissue, and decreases in the radial and axial direction, the temperature in the axial degrades more seriously than that in the radial.This study provides a theoretic bases for laser applications in medicine.
