Abstract:A 5 hm2 permanent plot was established in an evergreen broad-leaved forest,which lies in the north slope of Baishanzu Mountain,Qingyuan of Zhejiang.Using contiguous grid quadrat method,extensive field data were obtained and analysis of floristic composition and community structure showed as following,(i) Two evergreen species,Lithocarpus brevicaudatus and Cyclobalanopsis multinervis are the constructive species within the species-rich community.(ii) Areal-type of species suggests that the forest is highly related to tropic components,while temperate components still occupy fairly high percentage.It indicates that the forest is a mid-montane evergreen broad-leaved forest in the northern subzone of the middle subtropic.(iii) Lots of rare-species exist in the community,and the dominance of the dominant species is high,but the distribution of abundance is uneven.(iv) Large amount of seedlings and saplings exhibit good regeneration,and as a result of the effects of intraspecific and interspecific competition,few individuals have super diameter at breast height(DBH).Distribution of the diameter's frequency is detected as exponential distribution,which indicates the stems are continuous distribution on the vertical space,and the community is on the climax stage of succession process.(v) Community structure is complex,and the delamination is not obvious.The dominant species distribute in different two sub-layers of trees,and it lessens competition on a certain extent.Upper canopy is discontinuous,and it is far from the under-layer.The dense shrub-layer contains many species,and it is the seedling pool of the community.Herb-layer is sparse but with rich species,and liana is various but lack of large individuals.In conclusion,this community is a typical middle subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest.

Abstract:The classical environmental control model assumes that species distribution is determined by the spatial variation of underlying habitat conditions. This niche‐based model has recently been challenged by the neutral theory of biodiversity which assumes that ecological drift is a key process regulating species coexistence. Understanding the mechanisms that maintain biodiversity in communities critically depends on our ability to decompose the variation of diversity into the contributions of different processes affecting it. Here we investigated the effects of pure habitat, pure spatial, and spatially structured habitat processes on the distributions of species richness and species composition in a recently established 24‐ha stem‐mapping plot in the subtropical evergreen broad‐leaved forest of Gutianshan National Nature Reserve in East China. We used the new spatial analysis method of principal coordinates of neighbor matrices (PCNM) to disentangle the contributions of these processes. The results showed that (1) habitat and space jointly explained ∼53% of the variation in richness and ∼65% of the variation in species composition, depending on the scale (sampling unit size); (2) tree diversity (richness and composition) in the Gutianshan forest was dominantly controlled by spatially structured habitat (24%) and habitat‐independent spatial component (29%); the spatially independent habitat contributed a negligible effect (6%); (3) distributions of richness and species composition were strongly affected by altitude and terrain convexity, while the effects of slope and aspect were weak; (4) the spatial distribution of diversity in the forest was dominated by broad‐scaled spatial variation; (5) environmental control on the one hand and unexplained spatial variation on the other (unmeasured environmental variables and neutral processes) corresponded to spatial structures with different scales in the Gutianshan forest plot; and (6) five habitat types were recognized; a few species were statistically significant indicators of three of these habitats, whereas two habitats had no significant indicator species. The results suggest that the diversity of the forest is equally governed by environmental control (30%) and neutral processes (29%). In the fine‐scale analysis (10 × 10 m cells), neutral processes dominated (43%) over environmental control (20%).

Abstract:Investigation was conducted on community structure and species diversity from the sample plot(100 m×100 m) in Qingliangfeng National Nature Reserve for long-term monitoring.The results showed that Fagus hayatae was the dominant and constructive species of woody plants,Carex L.and Dryopteris A.were the key species of herbaceous plants.The species diversity and evenness index of woody plants had few difference in spatial distribution,while that of the herbaceous plants had great difference.The community was rich in plant species,especially shrub layer had the highest diversity index,species richness and plant density,and herbage layer had the lowest.

Abstract:Aims Mainly distributed in China,subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest is one of important vegetation types in the world.Here we report preliminary results of floristic characteristics,community composition,vertical structure,size class structure,and spatial structure of Gutianshan(GTS)forest plot.Methods We established a 24-hm2(600 m×400 m)forest permanent plot from November,2004 to September,2005 in mid-subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest of Gutianshan Nature Reserve,China.Following the standard census procedure of the Centre for Tropical Forest Science(CTFS),all free-standing trees ≥1 cm in diameter at breast height(DBH)in the forest were mapped,tagged and identified to species.We employed software R 2.6.0 to analyze our data.Important findings The results of floristic characteristics indicates that the tropical elements are more than temperate elements.At family level,the proportion of the pantropic type is the greatest(28.6%),the number of the tropic elements are more than temperate ones(24/13).At genus level,there are 53 tropic genera and 44 temperate ones.As for community composition,there are 159 species,103 genera and 49 families,140 700 individuals in total.The evergreen tree species in community are dominant(i.e.91 species,total relative dominance is 90.6%,importance value is 85.6%,accounts for 85.9% of the total abundance).GTS forest plot is typical mid-subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest,which displays characteristics of both temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest and tropical rain forest.On the one hand,community composition has obvious dominant species,which is similar to temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest.There are 3 mostly dominant species,Castanopsis eyrei,Schima superba and Pinus massoniana.Large numbers of rare species(59 rare species,equal to or less than one tree per hm2)in the community account for 37.1% species richness,which is similar to tropical rain forest.Vertical structure is composed of canopy layer(63 species),sub-tree layer(70 species),shrub layer(26 species).The structure of DBH size class of all species in the plot generally appears reverse `J' shape,which indicates successful community regeneration.Spatial distribution of several dominant species,from small to adult tree or old tree,shifts from closer aggregation to looser aggregation,and shows different habitat preference.Finally,we compare the large plot approach with conventional sampling method.

Abstract:Analysis and study through quadrat survey on characters of forest community in Gutianshan Nature Reserve of Zhejiang province showed that the forest is dominated by evergreen trees like Fagaceae, Cinnamomum Trew, Camellia L., Ericaceae and Rosaceae with characters such as leaves simple, leathery, small and medium, etc. The vertical structure was complicated with tree, shrub and herb and some interlayer plants.

Abstract:Lishan Mountain is belonged to the Zhongtiao Ranges in Southeast Shanxi, and situated between 35 degrees 16'30" - 35 degrees 27'20" N and 111 degrees 51'-- 112 degrees 5'35" E. The climate is cool and arid in winter, but warm and rainy in summer. This paper studied the species diversity and community structure of forest communities there, based on field investigation data and by using diversity, richness and evenness indices. The results showed that the species diversity and evenness of the communities were in the order of Acer davidii + Acer mono > Acer davidii + Carpinus turczaninouii > Quercus liaolugensis > Quercus varibilis > Pinus armandii + Betula albo-sinensis > Pinus tabulaeformis + Quercus glandulifera > Betula platyphylla > Platycladus orientalis + Quercus variabilis > Betula albo-sinensis > Pinus armandii > Platycladus orientalis > Pinus tabulaeformis > Populus davidiana + Betula albo-sinensis. The diversity and richness of shrub layer were higher than those of herb layer and arbor layer, but the evenness of arbor, shrub and herb layers had no significant difference. There were positive correlations (P < 0.05) between Shannon-Wiener index, Hill index, and species richness from 1 000 m to 1 920 m above sea level, but negative correlations (P < 0.05) from 1920 m to the top of the Mountain. The species diversity showed a "mid-altitude bulge" pattern with the change of altitude, and the reason was that the combination of temperature and moisture conditions from 1000 m to 1920 m above sea level was improved, and human disturbance was decreased gradually.

Species Diversity in Four Saccessional Communites of Evergreen Broad-Leaved Forest in Gutian Mountain, Zhe Jiang Province

Abstract:By the method of substituting spatial difference for time change,this paper studied the species diversity of 4 successional communities in the evergreen broad-leaved forest of Gutian Mountain Nature Reserve,Zhejiang Province.Sixteen typical plots were investigated and each plant in the contiguous grid quadrates was measured,with Shannon-Wiener index(H),Pielou index(J_(SW),J_(SI)) and Simpson index(D) determined.The results showed that the Shannon-Wiener index of coniferous forest,coniferous-broad leaf mixed forest,Schima superba forest and Castanopsis eyrei forest tree layers was 1.9670,2.4975,2.6140 and 2.4356,respectively,with a tendency from small to big and then to small in the course of succession.Among all successional communities,the species diversity of the shrub layer in coniferous-broad mixed forest was the biggest,with the Shannon-Wiener index 2.8625,while that of the herb layer in coniferous forest was the biggest,with the Shannon-Wiener index 1.5334.As for vertical structure,the species diversity of coniferous forest,coniferous-broad mixed forest and Castanopsis eyrei forest was all in the order of shrub layer tree layer herb layer,while that of Schima superba forest was in the order of tree layer shrub layer herb layer.During succession,herb layer had the biggest variation in species diversity,with the variation coefficient of H,J_(SW),J_(SI) and D being 0.1572,0.0806,0.0899 and 0.1884,respectively,while shrub layer had the smallest one,with the variation coefficient of H,J_(SW),J_(SI) and D only being 0.0482,0.0385,0.0142 and 0.1553,respectively.
Within Community Patch Dynamics in A Tropical Montane Rain Forest of Hainan Island, South China

Abstract:According to the forest-growth-cycle theory, forest communities are dynamic, mosaic systems composed of patches in different developmental phases. Based on an investigation in a sample of tropical montane rain forest of Hainan Island in South China, four distinct growth phases or patch types were recognized and patterns of patch mosaics and changes in tree species diversity were studied. Diurnal changes in light and temperature regimes in different patch types of the forest growth cycle were measured and analysed. Our results were as follows: (1) The percentages of different patch types within the sampled forest community were for the gap phase 38.5%, building phase 28.5%, mature phase 27.0% and degenerate phase 6.0%; (2) The change of densities (number of individuals/ha) of trees in the forest growth cycle was mainly caused by the larger sized trees; (3) The changes of species diversity with the forest growth cycle showed a humpback pattern; (4) The average DBH, average height, average basal area at DBH, and average volume of each individual and stand volume all increased with the forest cycle process; (5) Tree species richness and tree density at each phase of the forest cycle were positively correlated; (6) The environmental factors changed significantly, both diurnally and with progress of the forest cycle. Light intensity and soil surface temperature changed more in the gap phase than the other three phases. A framework to explain the mechanism for maintaining biological diversity within the tropical montane forest of Hainan Island is described.
Dynamics of Phylogenetic Structure in Fagus Hayatae Communities Vary Across Temporal and Spatial Scales

Abstract:The phylogenetic structure of communities is a fundamental component in our ability to understand community assembly processes and species coexistence.However,although there have been many studies of the spatial and temporal variation in community structure,few have applied these observations to the dynamics of phylogenetic structure.Here,we performed such an analysis to study temporal and spatial variations in the phylogenetic structure of Fagus hayatae communities,Class Ⅱ protected plant,in China.In 2006,all free-standing woody stems with a diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥1cm were tagged,mapped,identified,and measured for DBH,and height in a 1 hm2 forest dynamic plot in Qingliangfeng National Nature Reserve,China.This was followed by re-censuses in 2011 and 2016,in which we recorded the survival status and DBH for previously recorded stems and documented new stems with DBH ≥≥ 1cm.On the basis of these three censuses spread across a decade (2006,2011,2016),we measured the dynamics of the phylogenetic structure at three spatial scales (10m,20m,and 50m).We used global seed plant phylogenetic data to construct a phylogenetic tree of F.hayatae communities,and selected the mean phylogenetic distance (MPD),mean nearest taxon distance (MNTD),net relatedness index (NRI),and nearest taxon index (NTI) to describe the phylogenetic structure of F.hayatae communities.Additionally,we randomly resampled 999 plots at 10m,20m,50m scales using a moving split-window technique to create plots at different spatial scales.Analysis across spatial and temporal scales produced the following results.(1) On decadal time scales,the species richness and abundance of F.hayatae communities both decreased.MPD decreased,whereas MNTD increased.NRI and NTI both significantly positively increased at large scales,but did not change at small scales.(2) As the spatial extent of analyses increased,so did the strength of the trends observed.Thus,the phylogenetic structure of F.hayatae communities showed a clustering pattern and was spatial scale dependent.The largest variation in the phylogenetic structure across time was found at the 50m scale.We concluded that from 2006 to 2016,the phylogenetic structure of F.hayatae communities was clustering,whereas the phylogenetic relationships between nearest species became more distant.Moreover,the effects of environmental filtering dominated the phylogenetic structure dynamics of F.hayatae communities at large scales.This is in contrast to the effects of stochastic processes and interspecific competition,which dominated at small scales.Against a background of global climate change and forest degradation,further studies on scale dependence are needed to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms of community assembly,and to protect these endangered species.

Abstract:The community constitution,structure,distribution,regeneration and the formation reasons of the forest in Mount Yuntai area,Jiangsu Province,were studied by conventional approaches on the basis of analyzing large quantity of data obtained from plot investigation.The results showed that there were no obvious predominant species,nor the predominant species groups in the studied area though the composition of the forest community was plentiful.The maximum figure of the important value of species was 48.27.There were many forms of species combination,but the reappearance level of the combinations was quite low.Only 3 tree species had constant-rate value above 0.6 in the typically sampled plots.There was complete forest structure in Mount Yuntai area,and the hierarchy of arbor,shrub and the grass was clear and the continuity of plant community distribution was evident.The habitat,the special geographic location and the topographical conditions in the valley and around the low Mount Yuntai are the main reasons to cause above results.

Abstract:The large permanent forest plots have been an important platform for researches in community constructions.Interaction of individuals in community plays an important role in construction of community.Previous studies mostly focused on the interac-tions among species,and few of attentions were paid to how individual species construct a community.Comparative with result of BCI plot,we used the individual species-area index(ISAR) to analyze how the individual species construct the community in DHS plot.The result revealed that,unlike BCI plot and Sinharaja plot,majority of big trees are neutral in DHS plot.For smaller trees,both BCI and DHS plots showed a similar result that the number of accumulator species decreased along with the increase of radius scale,while neutral species increased.This indicated that individual species plays a different role in construction of different community at different development stages.Further studies should be focused on the forward exploitation,integrating others community informa-tion(such as,phylogeny and spatial structure et al) in the role of individual species on community.

Abstract:Data on soil mesofauna in fields of bamboo(as natural soil,NS),paddy rice,tea,orange,cabbage(as cultivated lands,CL) and fallow(as arable,A) were collected in Quzhou region in a period from March to December,2001.Using the community parameters of population density,group richness(GR),diversity index(DI) and evenness,we described the community structure and its seasonal changes,and clustered the Euclidean distances among the soil types.There were 19 groups of mesofauna in this region,and of the groups Acarina and Collembola were dominant,and Diptera,Coleoptera and Hymenoptera were often seen.Based on annual data,there was a difference in the community structure of the mesofauna between NS and CL-A(for NS,GR=13.25±0.25,DI=2.27±0.28;for CL-A,GR=7.55±0.88,DI=1.57±0.15),but no difference among soil types of CL-A.Based on seasonal data on the community structures of the mesofauna in the 6 soil types,the fields of cabbage,tea and orange showed the highest similarity.They then joined with rice field,and fallow,finally with bamboo field.Of the soil types,bamboo field had the highest GR and DI,and could possibly be ranked the best in quality in this region.

Abstract:Species association is one of the basic concepts in community succession. There are different viewpoints on how species interaction changes with the progress of succession. In order to assess these relationships, we examined species associations in the tropical montane rain forest at early and late successional stages in Diaoluo Mountain, Hainan Island. Based on data from a 2 × 2 contingency table of species presence or absence, statistical methods including analysis of species association and X 2 tests were applied. The results show that: 1) an overall positive association was present among tree species in the communities during the two successional stages and were statistically significant at the late stage. The number of species pairs with positive and negative associations decreased throughout the process of succession, while the number with null associations was greatly increased. The same trend existed among the dominant and companion species. The results indicate that the communities are developing towards a stable stage where the woody species coexist in harmony. 2) In the early-established and later invading species, all positive associations were not significant. Compared with positive and null associations, fewer negative associations were found. This implies that these species are inclined to coexist independently through portioning of resources. 3) Among the later invading species, positive associations were significant and no negative associations were found which suggest that these species have similar adaptive ability in the habitat and occupied overlapping niches in the community.
Forest community species diversity and influence of human disturbance in Mountainous Area of the West Lake in Hangzhou,East China

Abstract:Based upon belt transect method and quadrat method, the species diversity of various forest communities and the influence of human disturbance were investigated. The reason of diversity difference and the influence of disturbance were also analyzed. The result showed that: (1) in the whole community, species diversity in deciduous broad-leaved forest, evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved mixed forest, bamboo and broad-leaved mixed forest was high; in coniferous forest, broad-leaved and coniferous mixed forest and evergreen broad-leaved forest was in the middle; and in bamboo forest was low. (2) considered from the plumb structure, richness and diversity index ranked as: shrub layer > arborous layer > herbaceous layer; (3) the richness and diversity index were the highest under the road disturbance, and the lowest in the tea garden disturbance. (4) the influence of human disturbance caused to make community species richness and diversity increase or decrease. Habitat change and fragmentation caused by disturbance would reduce the richness and diversity. Whereas, the disturbance would change the habitat (like light and humidity ) so that more sun species and xerophyte appeared in the same time.

Abstract:Interspecific association is of great importance to research of community structure, evolution and classification. And interspecific association shows in a large part trends and processes of community succession. To study photosynthetic characteristics of the ecological species groups and changes in succession, interspecific associations were measured in plots of 3 successional stages (early stage, middle stage and late stage) of Hainan Island tropical rain forest, and were used to divide ecological species groups, whose maximal photosynthesis rate (Pmax) and water use efficiency (WUE) were measured using a Li-6400 portable photosynthesis system. The results showed that overall association indexes (VR) of early successional stage and middle successional stage were 1.038 and 1.232, and the positive associations were present among overall woody species of the communities during two successional stages (P>0.05). Overall association index (VR) of late successional stage was 2.238, and the positive association was present among overall woody species of the communities during the late successional stage (P<0.05) . The positive association among overall woody species of the communities became stronger with the succession process. Communities of 3 successional stages were divided to 3 ecological species groups. And species of the first ecological species group were significantly and positively associated with each other; most species of the second ecological species group were also significantly and positively associated with each other, but some of them were not, and several of them were significantly and negatively associated with species from the first ecological species group; species of the third ecological species group were independent. Values of maximal photosynthesis rate (Pmax) of all 3 ecological species group gradually decreased in the progress of succession.Pmax of the first ecological species group in early successional stage was significantly high than that in middle and latter successional stages (P<0.05);Pmax of the second ecological species group in early successional stage was significantly high than that in latter successional stage (P<0.05); the other Pmax, as well as WUE, were not significantly different with each other (P>0.05). Photosynthetic capacity was the intrinsic factor of difference ecological species groups.

Abstract:AimsTo understand the key processes driving the community assembly and diversity patterns in North China.Methods We investigated species composition of 87 plots from 29 sites.We applied phylogenetic approach, combined with community distribution information, to assess the community structure and diversity along environmental gradients.We then performed a variance partition to explore the relative importance of each environmental factor that influencing the patterns of community assembly and diversity process and a canonical correspondence analysis to analyze reason of community distributions.Important findings Similar communities showed similar habitat preferences, demonstrating that environments may shape species composition of the communities.The phylogenetic diversity showed a uni-modal pattern with the mean annual temperature (MAT), but increased with the mean annual precipitation (MAP), partly because of the strong disturbance in high-MAT regions.Temperature dominated the phylogenetic structure of the broadleaved forests in North China.Environmental filtering dominate the community assembly processes in the areas
