Abstract:A 5 hm2 permanent plot was established in an evergreen broad-leaved forest,which lies in the north slope of Baishanzu Mountain,Qingyuan of Zhejiang.Using contiguous grid quadrat method,extensive field data were obtained and analysis of floristic composition and community structure showed as following,(i) Two evergreen species,Lithocarpus brevicaudatus and Cyclobalanopsis multinervis are the constructive species within the species-rich community.(ii) Areal-type of species suggests that the forest is highly related to tropic components,while temperate components still occupy fairly high percentage.It indicates that the forest is a mid-montane evergreen broad-leaved forest in the northern subzone of the middle subtropic.(iii) Lots of rare-species exist in the community,and the dominance of the dominant species is high,but the distribution of abundance is uneven.(iv) Large amount of seedlings and saplings exhibit good regeneration,and as a result of the effects of intraspecific and interspecific competition,few individuals have super diameter at breast height(DBH).Distribution of the diameter's frequency is detected as exponential distribution,which indicates the stems are continuous distribution on the vertical space,and the community is on the climax stage of succession process.(v) Community structure is complex,and the delamination is not obvious.The dominant species distribute in different two sub-layers of trees,and it lessens competition on a certain extent.Upper canopy is discontinuous,and it is far from the under-layer.The dense shrub-layer contains many species,and it is the seedling pool of the community.Herb-layer is sparse but with rich species,and liana is various but lack of large individuals.In conclusion,this community is a typical middle subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest.

Abstract:Investigation was conducted on community structure and species diversity from the sample plot(100 m×100 m) in Qingliangfeng National Nature Reserve for long-term monitoring.The results showed that Fagus hayatae was the dominant and constructive species of woody plants,Carex L.and Dryopteris A.were the key species of herbaceous plants.The species diversity and evenness index of woody plants had few difference in spatial distribution,while that of the herbaceous plants had great difference.The community was rich in plant species,especially shrub layer had the highest diversity index,species richness and plant density,and herbage layer had the lowest.

Abstract:The classical environmental control model assumes that species distribution is determined by the spatial variation of underlying habitat conditions. This niche‐based model has recently been challenged by the neutral theory of biodiversity which assumes that ecological drift is a key process regulating species coexistence. Understanding the mechanisms that maintain biodiversity in communities critically depends on our ability to decompose the variation of diversity into the contributions of different processes affecting it. Here we investigated the effects of pure habitat, pure spatial, and spatially structured habitat processes on the distributions of species richness and species composition in a recently established 24‐ha stem‐mapping plot in the subtropical evergreen broad‐leaved forest of Gutianshan National Nature Reserve in East China. We used the new spatial analysis method of principal coordinates of neighbor matrices (PCNM) to disentangle the contributions of these processes. The results showed that (1) habitat and space jointly explained ∼53% of the variation in richness and ∼65% of the variation in species composition, depending on the scale (sampling unit size); (2) tree diversity (richness and composition) in the Gutianshan forest was dominantly controlled by spatially structured habitat (24%) and habitat‐independent spatial component (29%); the spatially independent habitat contributed a negligible effect (6%); (3) distributions of richness and species composition were strongly affected by altitude and terrain convexity, while the effects of slope and aspect were weak; (4) the spatial distribution of diversity in the forest was dominated by broad‐scaled spatial variation; (5) environmental control on the one hand and unexplained spatial variation on the other (unmeasured environmental variables and neutral processes) corresponded to spatial structures with different scales in the Gutianshan forest plot; and (6) five habitat types were recognized; a few species were statistically significant indicators of three of these habitats, whereas two habitats had no significant indicator species. The results suggest that the diversity of the forest is equally governed by environmental control (30%) and neutral processes (29%). In the fine‐scale analysis (10 × 10 m cells), neutral processes dominated (43%) over environmental control (20%).

Abstract:AimsTo understand the key processes driving the community assembly and diversity patterns in North China.Methods We investigated species composition of 87 plots from 29 sites.We applied phylogenetic approach, combined with community distribution information, to assess the community structure and diversity along environmental gradients.We then performed a variance partition to explore the relative importance of each environmental factor that influencing the patterns of community assembly and diversity process and a canonical correspondence analysis to analyze reason of community distributions.Important findings Similar communities showed similar habitat preferences, demonstrating that environments may shape species composition of the communities.The phylogenetic diversity showed a uni-modal pattern with the mean annual temperature (MAT), but increased with the mean annual precipitation (MAP), partly because of the strong disturbance in high-MAT regions.Temperature dominated the phylogenetic structure of the broadleaved forests in North China.Environmental filtering dominate the community assembly processes in the areas

Abstract:Based upon belt transect method and quadrat method, the species diversity of various forest communities and the influence of human disturbance were investigated. The reason of diversity difference and the influence of disturbance were also analyzed. The result showed that: (1) in the whole community, species diversity in deciduous broad-leaved forest, evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved mixed forest, bamboo and broad-leaved mixed forest was high; in coniferous forest, broad-leaved and coniferous mixed forest and evergreen broad-leaved forest was in the middle; and in bamboo forest was low. (2) considered from the plumb structure, richness and diversity index ranked as: shrub layer > arborous layer > herbaceous layer; (3) the richness and diversity index were the highest under the road disturbance, and the lowest in the tea garden disturbance. (4) the influence of human disturbance caused to make community species richness and diversity increase or decrease. Habitat change and fragmentation caused by disturbance would reduce the richness and diversity. Whereas, the disturbance would change the habitat (like light and humidity ) so that more sun species and xerophyte appeared in the same time.

Abstract:Aims:Spatial patterns of biodiversity can reflect the community assembly processes and the mechanisms of species coexistence within ecosystems.The semi-humid evergreen broad-leaved forest is a type of vegetation zone located in the semi-humid climate of the western subtropical region of China.To date,there have been many studies investigating the species diversity of this type of vegetation,but studies into the patterns of spatial heterogeneity of species diversity and its determinants are still relatively lacking,and research utilizing large dynamics plot has not yet been reported.To better understand the maintenance mechanism of species diversity,we explored the characteristics of spatial heterogeneity and species diversity and their main environmental determinants in a 20.16 ha forest dynamics plot located in the Jizu Mountains. Methods:Based on data collected from woody plants and TWINSPAN classification results from 504 quadrats 20 m x 20 m in the 20.16 ha forest dynamics plot in the Jizu Mountains,this article utilized regression analysis and the Mantel test to analyze the distribution patterns of a and β diversity,and their correlation with respective environmental factors. Results:(1)In the plot,we found that the species richness of the Pinus yunnanensis community and its trees and shrubs were all higher than that of the Castanopsis delavayi community and C.orthacantha community;the C.delavayi community and its shrubs species richness were both higher than that of the C.orthacantha community,while its tree species richness was higher than C.orthacantha community.On the contrary,the Shannon-Wiener value of the C.orthacantha community was found to be the highest among all species,followed by the C.delavayi community,while the value of the P.yunnanensis community was the lowest.Based on the net interspecific relationship index(NRI),the phylogenetic structures of the C.orthacantha community,C.delavayi community,and P.yunnanensis community were clustering,random,and overdispersion,respectively.(2)The factors that demonstrated a universal impact on species richness included the total nitrogen and pH,the relative altitude,and the sum of basal area of woody plants.The main factors affecting the richness of tree diversity included total nitrogen level and pH and the sum of basal area.The dominant factor influencing shrub species richness was the relative altitude,followed by total nitrogen,slope,and the topographic wetness index.(3)The species β diversity pattern showed that differences in species composition and turnover rate increased with increasing spatial and environmental distances,indicating that the more similar the environment,the more similar the community. Conclusion:This study reflects the significant differences in species diversity and composition between the pioneer P.yunnanensis community and the stable C.orthacantha community and C.delavayi community in the Jizu Mountains forest dynamics plot,which describes the characteristics of species coexistence and species diversity maintenance corresponding to the heterogeneous patches of semi-humid evergreen broad-leaved forests,and provides a basis for further mechanistic investigations.

Abstract:Using TWINSPAN and CCA , we analyzed species composition and community st ruct ure of Q uercus liaot u n gensis and Q .dent at a2Q .acutissi m a mixed forest s based on 43 plot s f rom Mt .Dongling , Mt .Dahait uo and Labagoumen regions , Beijing area.Community st ruct ures of all t he oak forest s were simple but varied greatly in different communities.The result s of TWINSPAN classifica2 tion indicated t hat t hese 43 plot s were clustered into 7 groups based on t he flora composition of canopy layer.CCA ordination demonst rated a significant relationship between Axis 1 and altit ude , indicating t he importance of temperat ure in determining community composition.On t he ot her hand , Axis 2 showed significant correlation wit h aspect , which suggested humidity may play a key role in communi2 ty assembly.The consistent result s of classification and ordination emp hasized t he importance of envi2 ronmental factors in shaping community st ruct ure and species composition.The species richness of t hese communities was low , which likely resulted f rom t he intensive human dist urbance in t his area.
[Species diversity and community structure of forest communities in Lishan Mountain]

Abstract:Lishan Mountain is belonged to the Zhongtiao Ranges in Southeast Shanxi, and situated between 35 degrees 16'30" - 35 degrees 27'20" N and 111 degrees 51'-- 112 degrees 5'35" E. The climate is cool and arid in winter, but warm and rainy in summer. This paper studied the species diversity and community structure of forest communities there, based on field investigation data and by using diversity, richness and evenness indices. The results showed that the species diversity and evenness of the communities were in the order of Acer davidii + Acer mono > Acer davidii + Carpinus turczaninouii > Quercus liaolugensis > Quercus varibilis > Pinus armandii + Betula albo-sinensis > Pinus tabulaeformis + Quercus glandulifera > Betula platyphylla > Platycladus orientalis + Quercus variabilis > Betula albo-sinensis > Pinus armandii > Platycladus orientalis > Pinus tabulaeformis > Populus davidiana + Betula albo-sinensis. The diversity and richness of shrub layer were higher than those of herb layer and arbor layer, but the evenness of arbor, shrub and herb layers had no significant difference. There were positive correlations (P < 0.05) between Shannon-Wiener index, Hill index, and species richness from 1 000 m to 1 920 m above sea level, but negative correlations (P < 0.05) from 1920 m to the top of the Mountain. The species diversity showed a "mid-altitude bulge" pattern with the change of altitude, and the reason was that the combination of temperature and moisture conditions from 1000 m to 1920 m above sea level was improved, and human disturbance was decreased gradually.

Abstract:Using the widely adopted scheme of space-for-time substitution for investigating 16 typical plots distributed as a pattern of contiguous grid quadrates within a sampling plot, the expressions of Shannon-Wiener index ( H ) for species diversity, Pielou index ( J sw , J SI ) for evenness and Simpson index ( D ) for ecological dominance are employed to investigate the species diversity ( SD ) of four evergreen broadleaved communities in the successions sequence within the Nature Reserve of the Gutian Mountains. Results showed that in the successions process from the coniferous to the mixed coniferous-broadleaved, then to Schima superba and finally to Castanopsis eyrei forest, the arbor layer SD showed the Shannon-Wiener index ( H ) as 1.9670, 2.4975, 2.6140 and 2.4356, respectively, characterized by their rise before drop and the shrub (herb) layer SD shows the maximum to be in the mixed coniferous-broadleaved (coniferous) forest ( H arriving at 2.8625 (1.5334)). In the vertical structure, on the other hand, for the sequenced coniferous forest, coniferous-broad mixed forest and Castnaopsis eyrei forest, the number of SD ranges in a decreasing order from the shrub, arbor to herb layer in contrast to the SD in a decreasing order of Schima superba forest ranging from the arbor to shrub and then to herb layer, and during the succession, the herb layer exhibits the maximum range of SD change among these layers, with its variation coefficients of 0.1572, 0.0806, 0.0899 and 0.1884 for H , J SW , J SI and D , in order, in sharp contrast to the minimal SD range in the shrub layer, with the corresponding figures of 0.0482, 0.0385, 0.0142, and 0.1553.
Patterns and Determinants of Plant Biodiversity in Non-Commercial Forests of Eastern China.

Abstract:Non-commercial forests represent important habitats for the maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem function in China, yet no studies have explored the patterns and determinants of plant biodiversity in these human dominated landscapes. Here we test the influence of (1) forest type (pine, mixed, and broad-leaved), (2) disturbance history, and (3) environmental factors, on tree species richness and composition in 600 study plots in eastern China. In total, we found 143 species in 53 families of woody plants, with a number of species rare and endemic in the study region. Species richness in mixed forest and broad-leaved forest was higher than that in pine forest, and was higher in forests with less disturbance. Species composition was influenced by environment factors in different ways in different forest types, with important variables including elevation, soil depth and aspect. Surprisingly, we found little effect of forest age after disturbance on species composition. Most non-commercial forests in this region are dominated by species poor pine forests and mixed young forests. As such, our results highlight the importance of broad-leaved forests for regional plant biodiversity conservation. To increase the representation of broad-leaved non-commercial forests, specific management practices such as thinning of pine trees could be undertaken.

Abstract:The types of evergreen broad-leaved forests and their species diversity in Gutian Mountain Nature Reserve were studied based on community investigation. The results showed that there were mainly 6 types (Formation) of evergreen broad-leaved forests in the reserve: Castanopsis eyrei forest, Castanopsis forgesii forest, Manglietia skinnneriana-Castanopsis tibetan forest, Cyclobalanopsis glauca forest, Daphniphyllum oldhami-Castanopsis eyrei forest and Quercus phillyraeoides-Cyclobalanopsis glauca forest. The structure and floristic components of the communities were described. Their physiognomy, structure, and floristic component showed the basic characteristics of typical evergreen broad-leaved forest in China. The species diversity of different types was different, those of Castanopsis forgesii forest and Manglietia skinnneriana-Castanopsis tibetan forest were high, Daphniphyllum oldhami-Castanopsis eyrei forest and Quercus phillyraeoides- Cyclobalanopsis glauca forest had smaller diversity than others. In the vertical structure of community, the species diversity of shrub layer was the highest, and decrease layerd from shrub, tree to herb layer. The species diversity index between tree layer and shrub layer had no significant difference, and the species richness and species diversity index of treed layer and shrub layer were obviously bigger than those of herb layer. In contrast to the large differences in species diversity among different types of evergreen broad-leaved forests in different areas, the species diversity of the Gutian Mountain's evergreen broad-leaved forest was higher than those of the Huang Mountain and the Dabie Mountain which have higher latitude, but it was lower than those of the Wuyanling Mountain and the Jinyun Mountain which have lower latitude. Abstract:To provide a theoretical basis and provide technical support for structural adjustments in a natural mixed forest,stand spatial structure of a mixed forest in the Fengyang Mountains National Nature Reserve of Zhejiang Province was determined using three structural parameters:uniform angle index,mingling,and neighborhood comparison.Four typical plots of 20 m × 20 m were surveyed for tree diameter at breast height above 5 cm.Results showed that dominant tree populations of Schima superba,Berrya ammonilla,Fagus lucida,and Cyclobalanopsis multinervis exhibited diverse and dominant species characteristics.The largest number of dominant species S.superba in the comparison of the space is in the moderation status.77% Sycopsis sinensis is completely oppressed and 8% is in the most dominant state,which shows that Sycopsis sinensis differentiates seriously.The average mingling of S.superba is 0.48 exhibiting aggregation of a single species.Because of less amount of Quercus glandulifera var.brevipetiolata,the average mingling is only 0.17 indicating Quercus glandulifera var.brevipetiolata distribution appeared as gobbets.Whereas the average mingling of other tree species is above 0.5.In addition to S.superba and Quercus glandulifera var.brevipetiolata,the other species seldom cluster together and have greater degree of isolation,which indicates the stand has the less moderate mixed degree.Distribution patterns for forests gradually move toward a random distribution in climax community succession,so natural mixed forest in the Fengyang Mountain develop into evergreen broad-leaved forest.

Abstract:Aims Mainly distributed in China,subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest is one of important vegetation types in the world.Here we report preliminary results of floristic characteristics,community composition,vertical structure,size class structure,and spatial structure of Gutianshan(GTS)forest plot.Methods We established a 24-hm2(600 m×400 m)forest permanent plot from November,2004 to September,2005 in mid-subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest of Gutianshan Nature Reserve,China.Following the standard census procedure of the Centre for Tropical Forest Science(CTFS),all free-standing trees ≥1 cm in diameter at breast height(DBH)in the forest were mapped,tagged and identified to species.We employed software R 2.6.0 to analyze our data.Important findings The results of floristic characteristics indicates that the tropical elements are more than temperate elements.At family level,the proportion of the pantropic type is the greatest(28.6%),the number of the tropic elements are more than temperate ones(24/13).At genus level,there are 53 tropic genera and 44 temperate ones.As for community composition,there are 159 species,103 genera and 49 families,140 700 individuals in total.The evergreen tree species in community are dominant(i.e.91 species,total relative dominance is 90.6%,importance value is 85.6%,accounts for 85.9% of the total abundance).GTS forest plot is typical mid-subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest,which displays characteristics of both temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest and tropical rain forest.On the one hand,community composition has obvious dominant species,which is similar to temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest.There are 3 mostly dominant species,Castanopsis eyrei,Schima superba and Pinus massoniana.Large numbers of rare species(59 rare species,equal to or less than one tree per hm2)in the community account for 37.1% species richness,which is similar to tropical rain forest.Vertical structure is composed of canopy layer(63 species),sub-tree layer(70 species),shrub layer(26 species).The structure of DBH size class of all species in the plot generally appears reverse `J' shape,which indicates successful community regeneration.Spatial distribution of several dominant species,from small to adult tree or old tree,shifts from closer aggregation to looser aggregation,and shows different habitat preference.Finally,we compare the large plot approach with conventional sampling method.
Variation model of north-south plant species diversity in the Qinling-Daba Mountains in China

Abstract:Understanding the variation patterns of mountain plant species diversity is becoming increasingly important in forest ecosystem management and protection. However, the research on plant species diversity has mainly focused on changes in whole plant species. Therefore, an in-depth study of the change mode of plant species via different classification methods and its impact on the overall change in plant diversity is very important for forestland restoration and biodiversity protection. In this study, the Qinling-Daba Mountains, a major feature of China's north–south transitional zone, were selected as the study area. Based on the floristic data of 58 nature reserves in the Qinling-Daba Mountains and its adjacent areas, the north–south change patterns of plant orders, families, genera and species diversity were first analyzed. Second, plant species were divided into different groups according to taxonomic group (orders, families and genera), life form (trees, shrubs and herbs) and endemism (species endemic and nonendemic to China). The change patterns of each group in the north–south direction were analyzed. Finally, the effects of different groups on the north–south change patterns of whole species are discussed. The species diversity of orders, genera and species exhibited a typical latitudinal gradient pattern, specifically, it gradually decreases from south to north, but the species diversity is relatively scattered. According to the north–south variation in species diversity in each order, families and genus, 5% of the orders, 2% of the families and 6% of the genera were positively correlated with latitude, and the rest were negatively correlated or uncorrelated. According to the north–south variation patterns of different life forms, the diversity of trees and shrubs showed a bimodal Gaussian distribution with latitude. According to the north–south variation patterns of plant endemism, the diversity of endemic species showed a Gaussian distribution with latitude, but the diversity of nonendemic species was negatively correlated with latitude. The dispersion of whole species diversity is caused by species in a few orders, families and genera, trees and shrubs, and endemic species. They may be more strongly affected by the vertical zonality of the mountains, which is inconsistent with the typical latitude gradient model. Our research will provide a basis for forestland management, nature reserve establishment and biodiversity conservation.
