Abstract:A series of cross-linked composite membranes based on polybenzimidazole (PBI) and polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) containing imidazole rings have been successfully prepared. The obtained PIL consisted of polymeric cation PBI-Bul and anion BF4-. Here, a concept of dual proton transfer channels was proposed, in which the anions of PIL served as proton receptor through electrostatic interaction and the imidazole rings accepted protons by acid-base effect simultaneously. In order to obtain proton exchange membranes based on PBI/PIL with excellent comprehensive properties, the cross-linker gamma-(2, 3-epoxypropoxy) propyltrimethoxysilane (KH560) is introduced into the matrix to strengthen the mechanical properties by hydrolyzing into Si-O-Si network structure. The composite membranes display excellent mechanical properties, oxidative and thermal stability. In particular, the cPBI-BF4-40 membranes with the highest content of PIL shows a proton conductivity of 0.117 S cm(-1) at 170 degrees C and it is good enough both in mechanical and PA uptake, which will make an outstanding candidate over other PBI-based membranes for high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) applications. Abstract:Mimicking biological proton pumps to achieve stimuli-responsive protonic solids has long been of great interest for their diverse applications in fuel cells, chemical sensors, and bio-electronic devices. Now, dynamic light-responsive metal-organic framework hybrid membranes can be obtained by in situ encapsulation of photoactive molecules (sulfonated spiropyran, SSP), as the molecular valve, into the cavities of the host ZIF-8. The configuration of SSP can be changed and switched reversibly in response to light, generating different mobile acidic protons and thus high on/off photoswitchable proton conductivity in the hybrid membranes and device. This device exhibits a high proton conductivity, fast response time, and extremely large on/off ratio upon visible-light irradiation. This approach might provide a platform for creating emerging smart protonic solids with potential applications in the remote-controllable chemical sensors or proton-conducting field-effect transistors.

Abstract:Applying different strategies, nanocomposite membranes formation from functionalized polymer(s) and compatible nanofillers is the most renowned way to make the membrane proton conductive without compromising their mechanical strength. Among different types of nanofillers, incorporating photothermal-responsive metal organic frameworks (MOFs) into the ion exchange polymer is the prominent strategy and has achieved advanced attention in smart protonic solids with versatile potential applications. In this work, ultrathin, highly ordered porous photothermal-responsive copper tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (Cu-TCPP) nanosheets are incorporated into sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) membranes as novel nanofillers. High loading and well dispersed Cu-TCPP nanosheets incorporated nanocomposite membranes are achieved and demonstrate photo-switchable protonic conductivity due to photothermal response of MOFs nanosheets to visible light. The nanocomposite membrane with highest MOFs content shows a high proton conductivity of 1.42 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) at 95 degrees C at 95% RH. The altered photo-switch proton conductivity of nanocomposite membranes is attributed to the formation and breakage of H-bonding networks with water molecules in the channels of proton transport pathways by the local photothermal heated Cu-TCPP nanosheets. Furthermore, after incorporation of the Cu-TCPP nanosheets into SPS, not only the thermal stability is increased but also almost zero swelling is achieved in water, which reflects the nice durability of nanocomposite membranes. This photo-switchable proton conductivity of polymer proton conducting nanocomposite membranes with nice thermal stability and negligible swelling serves as a new gate for photo-switching proton conductive membranes, photosensors, photoswitches etc.

Abstract:Smart proton conductive metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes with dynamic remote control over proton conduction show high potential for use in advanced applications, such as sensors and bioprocesses. Here, we report a photoswitchable proton conductive ZIF-8 membrane by coencapsulating polystyrene sulfonate and graphene quantum dots into a ZIF-8 matrix (GQDs-PSS@ZIF-8) via a solid-confined conversion process. The proton conductivity of the GQDs-PSS@ZIF-8 membrane is 6.3 times higher than that of pristine ZIF-8 and can be reversibly switched by light due to photoluminescence quenching and the photothermal conversion effect, which converts light into heat. The local increase in temperature allows water molecules to escape from the porous channels, which cuts off the proton transport pathways and results in a decrease in proton conductivity. The proton conductivity is restored when the light is off owing to regaining water molecules, which act as proton carriers, from the surroundings. The GQDs-PSS@ZIF-8 membrane responds efficiently to light and exhibits an ON/OFF ratio of 12.8. This photogated proton conduction in MOFs has potential for the development and application of MOF-based protonic solids in advanced photoelectric devices.
Thermal-Response Proton Conduction in Schiff Base-Incorporated Metal-Organic Framework Hybrid Membranes under Low Humidity Based on the Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer Mechanism

Abstract:Stimulus-responsive proton conduction materials have attracted enormous interest as a new kind of "smart material". It is desirable to develop the appropriate stimulus signal and high proton-conducting materials with an excellent proton-conducting switch ratio (γ), but it remains a great challenge. Here, it can be found for the first time that 4-((2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)benzenesulfonic acid (HBABSA) has obvious thermal isomerization when porous solids act as matrixes at the ambient temperatures, which is different from that in the crystalline state at 77 K. Therefore, we proposed a host-guest metal-organic framework (MOF) composite, namely, MOF-808 incorporated with HBABSA (HBABSA@MOF-808), which has a proton-conducting switch ratio (γ) of 16 between 338 and 343 K due to the thermally induced isomerization of HBABSA molecules in the MOF pores. The strong binding between the keto-type HBABSA and MOF at the relatively low temperatures can efficiently suppress the proton conduction, while the enol-type one provides more mobile protons for conduction at the high temperatures due to the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer mechanism. Further, the HBABSA@MOF-808 as a filler is blended into polyvinyl alcohol and poly(2-acrylamide-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid) to form hybrid membranes. The hybrid membrane with the highest content of the MOF composite displays a high proton conductivity of 5.57 × 10-3 S·cm-1 under 353 K and 57% RH along with a good switch ratio of 5.4. The development of thermal-response proton-conducting MOF materials is opening up a unique pathway for remote control, thermal sensing, intelligent batteries, and other fields.

Abstract:A novel electrolyte membrane PVDF-Al2O3-CsHSO4 usable at medium temperatures was prepared by composite of PVDF and an inorganic proton conductor Al2O3-CsHSO4. The membrane has a steep increase in proton conductivity around 90 degrees C and retains the high conductivity, about 10(-3) S.cm(-1), up to 200 degrees C. The incorporation of Al2O3-CsHSO4 with PVDF leads to a dramatic improvement of the properties of PVDF, including widen the phase transition temperature of CsHSO4, improve proton conductivity and enhance chemical stability over wide temperature range.

Abstract:Mimicking biological proton pump phenomenon to achieve stimulus‐responsive proton conduction behavior has received long‐term attention. The Pa@Zn‐MOF (Pa = photoacids) composites are successfully prepared through adsorption photoacid in Zn‐MOF, then, the composites are mixed into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to fabricate hybrid membranes Pa@Zn‐MOF‐PVA. When the hybrid membrane is activated through 375 nm violet light at room temperature, the value of proton conductivity after illumination is always superior to that before light irradiation. This phenomenon is attributed to the light‐induced ring‐closing reaction of the photoacid molecules to give the spiro‐forms (SPs) along with an abundant release of protons. The released protons jump into hydrogen bond networks and conveniently accelerate proton transport, resulting in higher proton conductivity. This is a noteworthy demonstration of dynamic control over proton conduction in composite membrane materials by adsorption of photoacid molecules in metal–organic framework. The proton conduction performance of Pa@Zn‐MOF‐PVA (Pa=photoacids; PVA=poly (ethylene glycol)) composite membrane has enhanced upon illumination.

Abstract:High, stable, and modulatable ionic conductivity is important for the wide nanofluidic applications of layered two-dimensional (2D) membranes. In this study, we demonstrate the orders of magnitude higher proton and ionic conductivity of MXene membrane than that of bulk solution at low concentrations. Importantly, the membrane is highly stable in aqueous solution without any modification, due to the strong interlayer van der Waals attractive interaction, and weak electrostatic repulsive interaction. Furthermore, by exploiting the intrinsic photothermal property of MXene, we demonstrate that the ionic conductivity can be reversely, rapidly, and completely switched on or off with laser light. This study should prove MXene membrane as an excellent platform to study and utilize nanofluidic ion transport. It should also inspire future studies to manipulate the mass transport through 2D membranes using their inherent unique physico-chemical properties.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive materials hold great potential for the development of smart materials due to their specifically tailored characteristics. However, it is challenging to understand internal molecular dynamics when the macroscopic mechanics of materials change in response to specific applied stimuli. Herein, we present the biological composite fibers of which mechanical properties can be reversibly controlled on demand by photothermal effect of an alternating near-infrared light irradiation. In stark contrast to the weakening of the mechanical properties of conventional materials by heating, the mechanical performance of the obtained fibers are significantly enhanced, showing an increase of Young's modulus by a factor of four. The outstanding photothermal-mechanical behavior relies on the evolution of hydrogen bonds within the system. We envision that this type of fiber material will inspire a new strategy for the construction of smart devices.
Reversible Ion-Conducting Switch In A Novel Single-Ion Supramolecular Hydrogel Enabled By Photoresponsive Host-Guest Molecular Recognition

Abstract:A novel ion-conducting supramolecular hydrogel with reversible photoconductive properties in which the azobenzene motif, alpha-cyclodextrin (alpha-CD), and ionic liquid are grafted onto the gel matrix is reported. Host-guest interactions with different association constants between alpha-CD and azobenzene or the anionic part of the ionic liquid can be readily tuned by photoinduced trans-cis isomerization of the azobenzene unit. When irradiated by 365 nm light, alpha-CD prefers to form a complex with the anionic part of the ionic liquid, resulting in decreased ionic mobility and thus high resistance of the hydrogel. However, under 420 nm light irradiation, a more stable complex is again formed between alpha-CD and trans-azobenzene, thereby releasing the bound anions to regenerate the low-resistive hydrogel. As such, remote control of the ionic conductivity of the hydrogel is realized by simple host-guest chemistry. With the incorporation of a logic gate, this hydrogel is able to reversibly switch an electric circuit on and off by light irradiation with certain wavelengths. The concept of photoswitchable ionic conductivity of a hydrogel mediated by competitive molecular recognition is potentially promising toward the fabrication of optoelectronic devices and applications in bioelectronic technology.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive conductive MOF nanoporous materials have been considered to have great potential for photoelectric conversion, information processing, bioelectronics, and smart devices. However, light-regulating hydroxide ion conduction of MOFs is rarely reported. Herein, a reversible optical switch on hydroxide ion conduction has been achieved based on the intrinsic localized photothermal heating of NH2-UiO-66 nanoparticles. The amino group on the organic ligand of NH2-UiO-66 can build a hydrogen-bond network with water molecules to promote hydroxide ion transport in the nanochannel and cause an absorption band in the visible light region. Irradiated by visible light, NH2-UiO-66 nanoparticles can absorb light and convert it into heat, resulting in partial removal of water molecules in the nanopores and destroying the hydroxide ion transport path. Then, the hydroxide ion conductivity decreased by 2 orders of magnitude. When turning off the light, the hydroxide ion conductivity can restore quickly. This work will promote the development of remotely controlled hydroxide ion conductive smart devices.

Abstract:Problems associated with intrinsically destructive sensing mechanisms of organic field. effect transistors constitute one of the main obstacles to using them for the practical applications in sensing and switching. Here we report a smart system, in which a photochromic spiropyran (SP) combined with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is used as a gate dielectric, to develop functional molecular devices capable of photoswitching their electrical conductivity in a noninvasive manner. Significant and reversible capacitance and current transitions in devices are generally demonstrated experimentally when the SP molecules undergo their documented reversible photoisomerization. This concept of conformation. induced capacitive coupling offers attractive new prospects for the development of functional devices by utilizing other stimuli. responsive molecular materials.
In Situ-Doped Superacid in the Covalent Triazine Framework Membrane for Anhydrous Proton Conduction in a Wide Temperature Range from Subzero to Elevated Temperature

Abstract:Synthesis of solid-state proton-conducting membranes with low activation energy and high proton conductivity under anhydrous conditions is a great challenge. Here, we show a simple and convenient way to prepare covalent triazine framework membranes (CTF-Mx) with acid in situ doping for anhydrous proton conduction in a wide temperature range from subzero to elevated temperature (160 °C). The low proton dissociation energy and continuous hydrogen bond network in CTF-Mx make the membrane achieve high proton conductivity from 1.21×10-3 S cm-1 (−40 °C) to 2.08×10-2 S cm-1 (160 °C) under anhydrous conditions. Abstract:Intelligent transport of molecular species across different barriers is critical for various biological functions and is achieved through the unique properties of biological membranes. An essential feature of intelligent transport is the ability to adapt to different external and internal conditions and also the ability to memorise the previous state. In biological systems, the most common form of such intelligence is expressed as hysteresis. Despite numerous advances made over previous decades on smart membranes, it is still a challenge for a synthetic membrane to display stable hysteretic behaviour for molecular transport. Here we show the memory effects and stimuli regulated transport of molecules through an intelligent phase changing MoS$_2$ membrane in response to external pH. We show that water and ion permeation through 1T' MoS$_2$ membranes follows a pH dependent hysteresis with a permeation rate that switches by a few orders of magnitude. We demonstrate that this phenomenon is unique to the 1T' phase of MoS$_2$ due to the presence of surface charge and exchangeable ions on the surface. We further demonstrate the potential application of this phenomenon in autonomous wound infection monitoring and pH-dependent nanofiltration. Our work significantly deepens understanding of the mechanism of water transport at the nanoscale and opens an avenue for developing neuromorphic applications, smart drug delivery systems, point-of-care diagnostics, smart sensors, and intelligent filtration devices.

Abstract:A biomimetic adhesive strategy is proposed in combination with topological interlocking and alternating laminated architecture to overcome the trade‐off effect between proton conductivity and mechanical stability of COF membranes. A polyoxometalate (H3PW12O40, HPW)‐centred subnanowire (SNW) is developed for synergistically enhancing the binding capacity between TP‐COF nanosheets and strengthening the proton conductivity. Achieving rapid ion transport through nanochannels is essential for both biological and artificial membrane systems. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with well‐defined nanostructures hold great promise for addressing the above challenge. However, due to the limited processability and inadequate interlamellar interaction of COF materials, it is extremely difficult to integrate them to prepare high‐performance proton conductors. Herein, inspired by the ingenious bio‐adhesion strategy in nature, ultrafast proton conduction is achieved by taking advantage of COF membranes where TP‐COF nanosheets are linked by subnanometer nanowires/lignocellulosic nanofibrils composites (SNWs/LCNFs) through electrostatic and π‐π interactions to form an ordered and robust structure. Notably, the synthesized SNWs exhibited impressive proton conductivity and adhesion capacity due to their inbuilt phosphotungstic acid (HPW) molecules and multidimensional interactions. Therefore, attributed to the synergistic contribution of TP‐COFs and SNWs, the composite membrane achieves ultrahigh proton conductivity (0.395 S cm−1 at 80 °C and 100% RH), superior mechanical property (109.8 MPa), exceptional fuel cell performance (71.6 mW cm−2), and superior operational stability (OCV decay rate is about 1.5 mV h−1), demonstrating outstanding competitiveness. More importantly, the proposed design concept has the potential to be applied in membranes for various electrochemical devices and molecular separations.

Abstract:An electrochemical method for proton transport visualization was developed and applied to the investigation of proton-conducting membrane materials. The method employs the change in the visual appearance of chemo-chromic tungsten oxide WO3 in the presence of atomic hydrogen. An all-solid electrochemical cell arranged by substituting a fuel cell cathode with a thin film of WO3-electrode was built and shown to generate both optical and electrical response to hydrogen gas exposure. The design of the cell was extended to a high throughput screening system that was utilized to characterize proton transport properties of samples, including a number of new compounds synthesized in-house by sol–gel wet chemistry. Non-destructive introduction of superacidic groups promoting proton hopping in the membrane materials was achieved by photodecomposition of a photoacid generator just after membrane casting. A model quantitatively describing current–voltage relation in the cell was developed and successfully applied to derive area-specific resistance of proton-conductive membranes from the experimental results. Area-specific resistances of membranes are derived from the slopes of optically reconstructed voltage–current curves. Sensitivity and dynamic range of the screening method are discussed.
