Abstract:Let p be a prime number and q=ph. For f(x)=xd+ax∈Fq[x](a≠0), we obtain the slopes of the Newton polygons of the L-functions of the exponential sums associated to f(x) for any nontrivial finite character χ. For χ of order p, our result recovers Zhu's genericity result [10] by giving p an explicit bound. The general χ case is based on improvement of results of Davis–Wan–Xiao [2].

Abstract:In this paper, we shall precise the asymptotic behaviour of Newton polygons of $L$ functions associated to character sums, coming from some $n$ variable Laurent polynomials. In order to do this, we use the free sum on convex polytopes. This operation allows the determination of the limit of generic Newton polygons for the sum $\Delta=\Delta_1\oplus \Delta_2$ when we know the limit of generic Newton polygons for each factor. To our knowledge, these are the first results concerning the asymptotic behaviour of Newton polygons for multivariable polynomials.

Abstract:We show that for a monic polynomial f(x) over a number field K containing a global permutation polynomial of degree >1 as its composition factor, the Newton Polygon of fmodp does not converge for p passing through all finite places of K. In the rational number field case, our result is the “only if” part of a conjecture of Wan about limiting Newton polygons.

Abstract:We studies the Newton polygon for the L-function of toric exponential sums attached to a family of two variable generalized hyperkloosterman sum,$f_{t}(x,y)=x^{n}+y+\frac{t}{xy}$ with $t$ the parameter. The explicit Newton polygon is obtained by systematically using Dwork's $\theta_{\infty}$-splitting function with an appropriate choice of basis for cohomology following the method of Adolphson and Sperber[2]. Our result provides a non-trivial explicit Newton polygon for a non-ordinary family of more than one variable with asymptotical behavior, which gives an evidence of Wan's limit conjecture[15].

Newton Polyhedrons and Hodge Numbers of Non-degenerate Laurent Polynomials

Abstract:Claude Sabbah has defined the Fourier transform $G$ of the Gauss-Manin system for a non-degenerate and convenient Laurent polynomial and has shown that there exists a polarized mixed Hodge structure on the vanishing cycle of $G$. In this article, we consider certain non-degenerate and convenient Laurent polynomials $f_{P,\mathbf{a}}$, whose Newton polyhedron at infinity is a simplicial polytope $P$. First, we consider the stacky fan $\boldsymbol{\Sigma}_P$ given by $P$ and show that for each quotient stacky fan of $\boldsymbol{\Sigma}_P$, there is a natural polarized mixed Hodge structure on the ring of conewise polynomial functions on it. Then, we describe the polarized mixed Hodge structure on the vanishing cycle associated to $f_{P,\mathbf{a}}$ using these rings of conewise polynomial functions. In particular, we compute the Hodge diamond of the vanishing cycle. As a further consequence, we can solve the Birkhoff problem of such a Laurent polynomial by using elementary methods.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a projective irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold. We associate with any big $\mathbf{R}$-divisor $D$ on $X$ a convex polygon $\Delta_E^{\mathrm{num}}(D)$ of dimension $2$, whose Euclidean volume is $\mathrm{vol}_{\mathbf{R}^2}(\Delta_E^{\mathrm{num}}(D))=q_X(P(D))/2$, where $E$ is any prime divisor on $X$, $q_X$ is the Beauville-Bogomolov-Fujiki form and $P(D)$ is the positive part of the divisorial Zariski decomposition of $D$. We systematically study these polygons and observe that they behave like the Newton-Okounkov bodies of big divisors on smooth complex projective surfaces, with respect to a general admissible flag.

Abstract:Certain Iwahori double cosets in the loop group of a reductive group, known under the names of P -alcoves or -alcoves, play an important role in the study of affine Deligne–Lusztig varieties. For such an Iwahori double coset, its Newton stratification is related to the Newton stratification of an Iwahori double coset in a Levi subgroup. We study this relationship further, providing in particular a bijection between the occurring Newton strata. As an application, we prove a conjecture of Dong-Gyu Lim, giving a non-emptiness criterion for basic affine Deligne–Lusztig varieties.

Abstract:Let $P$ be a polytope with rational vertices. A classical theorem of Ehrhart states that the number of lattice points in the dilations $P(n) = nP$ is a quasi-polynomial in $n$. We generalize this theorem by allowing the vertices of P(n) to be arbitrary rational functions in $n$. In this case we prove that the number of lattice points in P(n) is a quasi-polynomial for $n$ sufficiently large. Our work was motivated by a conjecture of Ehrhart on the number of solutions to parametrized linear Diophantine equations whose coefficients are polynomials in $n$, and we explain how these two problems are related.

Abstract:In this paper we give a proof of Deligne's conjecture on the critical values of $L$-functions for arbitrary algebraic Hecke characters. This extends a result of Blasius, which only works in the case of CM fields. The key new insight is that the Eisenstein-Kronecker classes of Kings-Sprang, which allow for a cohomological interpretation of the value $L(\chi,0)$ for Hecke characters $\chi$ of arbitrary totally imaginary fields, can be regarded as de Rham classes of Blasius' reflex motive.

Abstract:By a generalized Delsarte polynomial we mean a Laurent polynomial whose exponent vectors are linearly independent. We consider certain monomial deformations of generalized Delsarte polynomials and study their associated differential modules. We determine the solutions at the origin, which are all classical ${}_kF_{k-1}$-hypergeometric functions with the variable raised to a power. Using standard changes of variable, we also obtain the solutions at infinity.

Abstract:We prove that every indefinite quadratic form with non-negative integer coefficients is the volume polynomial of a pair of lattice polygons. This solves the discrete version of the Heine-Shephard problem for two bodies in the plane. As an application, we show how to construct a pair of planar tropical curves (or a pair of divisors on a toric surface) with given intersection number and self-intersection numbers.

Abstract:In 1995, Kollár conjectured that a complex projective $n$-fold $X$ with generically large fundamental group has Euler characteristic $\chi(X, K_X)\geq 0$. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture assuming $X$ has linear fundamental group, i.e., there exists an almost faithful representation $\pi_1(X)\to {\rm GL}_N(\mathbb{C})$. We deduce the conjecture by proving a stronger $L^2$ vanishing theorem: for the universal cover $\widetilde{X}$ of such $X$, its $L^2$-Dolbeaut cohomology $H_{(2)}^{n,q}(\widetilde{X})=0$ for $q\neq 0$. The main ingredients of the proof are techniques from the linear Shafarevich conjecture along with some analytic methods.

Abstract:We consider arbitrary algebraic families of lower order deformations of nondegenerate toric exponential sums over a finite field. We construct a relative polytope with the aid of which we define a ring of coefficients consisting of p-adic analytic functions with polyhedral growth prescribed by the relative polytope. Using this we compute relative cohomology for such families and calculate sharp estimates for the relative Frobenius map. In applications one is interested in L-functions associated with linear algebra operations (symmetric powers, tensor powers, exterior powers and combinations thereof) applied to the relative Frobenius. Using methods pioneered by Ax, Katz and Bombieri we prove estimates for the degree and total degree of the associated L-function and p-divisibility of the reciprocal zeros and poles. Similar estimates are then established for affine families and pure Archimedean weight families (in the simplicial case).

On modulo $\ell$ cohomology of $p$-adic Deligne-Lusztig varieties for $GL_n$

Abstract:In 1976, Deligne and Lusztig realized the representation theory of finite groups of Lie type inside étale cohomology of certain algebraic varieties. Recently, a $p$-adic version of this theory started to emerge: there are $p$-adic Deligne-Lusztig spaces, whose cohomology encodes representation theoretic information for $p$-adic groups - for instance, it partially realizes local Langlands correspondence with characteristic zero coefficients. However, the parallel case of coefficients of positive characteristic $\ell \neq p$ has not been inspected so far. The purpose of this article is to initiate such an inspection. In particular, we relate cohomology of certain $p$-adic Deligne-Lusztig spaces to Vignéras's modular local Langlands correspondence for $\mathbf{GL}_n$.

Abstract:We formulate a local analogue of the ghost conjecture of Bergdall and Pollack, which essentially relies purely on the representation theory of GL_2(Q_p). We further study the combinatorial properties of the ghost series as well as its Newton polygon, in particular, giving a characterization of the vertices of the Newton polygon and proving an integrality result of the slopes. In a forthcoming sequel, we will prove this local ghost conjecture under some mild hypothesis and give arithmetic applications.
