Abstract:Lighting Research &Technology, Ahead of Print. This study investigated the impact of temporal light modulation (TLM) generated by light-emitting diode lighting on visual task performance. Five lighting conditions were used in this study. One was a direct current, and the other four used pulse-width modulation with 60 Hz, 100 Hz, 400 Hz and 1000 Hz modulation frequencies, respectively. The study assessed participants' performance in various visual tasks involving eye movements, including arithmetic problem-solving, linking numbers tasks and the CamBlobsTM Contrast Sensitivity test. The experimental results showed that the response time of visual tasks related to typical daily eye movements, such as the arithmetic problem-solving task and the CamBlobsTM Contrast Sensitivity task, were in proportion to the PstLM, which showed the influence of flicker. In contrast, the linking numbers task, which required more extensive eye movements and object movements, was more relevant to the stroboscopic visibility measure than [math], which showed a higher influence of stroboscopic effect than flicker. These findings underscore the significance of considering TLM parameters when designing lighting systems for environments where visual tasks are crucial. This research contributes to our understanding of how light modulation affects human performance in visually demanding settings and has implications for optimising lighting design to enhance task performance.

Electrodynamics of Photonic Temporal Interfaces

Abstract:Exotic forms of wave control have been emerging by engineering matter in space and time. In this framework, temporal photonic interfaces, i.e., abrupt changes in the electromagnetic properties of a material, have been shown to induce temporal scattering phenomena dual to spatial reflection and refraction, at the basis of photonic time crystals and space-time metamaterials. Despite decades-old theoretical studies on these topics, and recent experimental demonstrations, the careful modeling of these phenomena has been lagging behind. Here, we develop from first principles a rigorous model of the electrodynamics of temporal photonic interfaces, highlighting the crucial role of the mechanisms driving time variations. We demonstrate that the boundary conditions and conservation laws associated with temporal scattering may substantially deviate from those commonly employed in the literature, based on their microscopic implementation. Our results open new vistas for both fundamental investigations over light-matter interactions in time-varying structures and for the prospect of their future implementations and applications in optics and photonics.

Abstract:We report the first experimental demonstration of combined spatial and temporal control of light trajectories through opaque media. This control is achieved by solely manipulating spatial degrees of freedom of the incident wavefront. As an application, we demonstrate that the present approach is capable to form bandwidth-limited ultrashort pulses from the otherwise randomly transmitted light with a controllable interaction time of the pulses with the medium. Our approach provides a new tool for fundamental studies of light propagation in complex media and has potential for applications for coherent control, sensing and imaging in nano- and biophotonics.

Abstract:Regarded as a promising alternative to spatially shaping matter, time-varying media can be seized to control and manipulate wave phenomena, including thermal radiation. Here, based upon the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, we elaborate a comprehensive quantum theoretical formulation that lies the basis for investigating thermal emission effects in time-modulated media. Our theory unveils unique physical features brought about by time-varying media: nontrivial correlations between fluctuating electromagnetic currents at different frequencies and positions, thermal radiation overcoming the black-body spectrum, and quantum vacuum amplification effects at finite temperature. We illustrate how these features lead to striking phenomena and innovative thermal emitters, specifically, showing that the time-modulation releases strong field fluctuations confined within epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) bodies, and that, in turn, it enables a narrowband (partially coherent) emission spanning the whole range of wavevectors, from near to far-field regimes.

Abstract:Light causes not only vision, but also non-visual effects such as regulating the circadian system. Although the effort to fully understand the mechanism of non-visual response is still ongoing, quantitative models have been proposed to evaluate light's circadian stimulus based on the characteristics of light incident on human eyes. With the light-emitting diode (LED) technology providing flexibility in spectral design, it is now possible to tune lighting's circadian and visual effects to suit the uses of different built environments. Therefore, it is important to develop a lighting-design approach that considers both visual and non-visual aspects, and understand what combinations are achievable for general illumination applications.In this work, we propose a lighting-design space that allows the exploration of combinations of circadian effect and brightness (visual lit appearance). To demonstrate the feasibility of this approach, we develop a color-mixing method for four-channel color-tunable LED light sources, and maximize the gamut of the proposed space. This gamut represents the possible design objectives that interior lighting designers can target. As an example of application, we demonstrate that our color-tunable LED solution can be used to dynamically simulate both circadian and visual properties of daylight. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Effects of temporal light modulation on working performance, subjective visual fatigue and pupillary light response at 50 lx

Abstract:Recent studies revealed that the visual perception of temporal light modulation (TLM), particularly the visibility threshold, were illuminance dependent and subjects exhibited significantly different response at 50 lx. Some novel studies suggested TLM at 50 lx could be particularly useful in terms of promoting alertness and increasing comfort. Therefore, in this study, working performance, subjective visual fatigue and pupillary light response (PLR) were measured under different frequency of TLM at 50 lx to evaluate such phenomenon and its possible application. Results showed that all three parameters measured at 50 lx followed a U-shaped curve with the increasing frequency, instead of the monotonically increasing trend reported in earlier research at relative higher illuminance levels (300-400) lx. Comparing to 100 Hz or 1000 Hz, 300 Hz was the best in terms of visual fatigue (P<0.01) and worst in terms of working performance (P<0.01) while PLR also showed smaller percent change under 316 Hz and 562 Hz (P<0.01). These results supported the hypotheses that at 50 lx illuminance level, the relationship between the effect of TLM and frequency was non-monotonic and was different than the monotonically increasing trend discovered under higher illuminance. Furthermore, such difference not only affects working performance and visual fatigue, but also pupillary light response, which then might affect more physiological outcome. These results could potentially be useful for reducing visual fatigue at scenarios such as operating displays in vehicles or aircrafts at night.

Abstract:Abstract Temporally modulated optical media are important in both abstract and applied situations, such as spacetime transformation optics, relativistic laser–plasma interactions, and dynamic metamaterials. Here we investigate the behaviour of temporal boundaries, and show that traditional approaches that assume constant dielectric properties, with loss incorporated as an imaginary part, necessarily lead to unphysical solutions. Furthermore, although physically reasonable predictions can be recovered with a narrowband approximation, we show that appropriate models should use materials with a temporal response and dispersive behaviour.

Abstract:Control over the amplitude, phase, and spatial distribution of visible-spectrum light underlies many technologies, but commercial solutions remain bulky, require high control power, and are often too slow. Active integrated photonics for visible light promises a solution, especially with recent materials and fabrication advances. In this review, we discuss three growing application spaces which rely on control of visible light: control and measurement of atomic quantum technologies, augmented-reality displays, and measurement and control of biological systems. We then review the commercial dynamic surfaces and bulk systems which currently provide visible-light modulation and the current state-of-the-art integrated solutions. Throughout the review we focus on speed, control power, size, optical bandwidth, and technological maturity when comparing technologies.

Abstract:Dynamic control of molecular photoluminescence offers chemical solutions to designing functional emissive materials. Although stimuli-switchable molecular luminescent systems are well established, how to encode these dynamic emissive systems with a "timing" feature, that is, time-dependent luminescent properties, remains challenging. This Concept aims to summarize the design principles of dynamic timing molecular photoluminescent systems by discussing the state-of-the-art of this topic and the shaping of fabrication strategies at both the molecular and supramolecular levels. An outlook and perspectives are given to outline the future opportunities and challenges in the rational design and potential applications of these smart emissive systems.
Electromagnetic Response for Modulation at Optical Time Scale

Abstract:Rapid modulation of the electromagnetic response in both time and space creates temporal boundaries in the medium and leads to time-reflection and time-refraction of light and to the eventual formation of the photonic time crystal within the modulated optical material,, offering a new regime of light-matter interactions and a potential for practical applications, from non-resonant light amplification to tunable lasing. However, the conventional approach commonly used for the photonic time crystals and related phenomena that relies on the concept of effective time-dependent refractive index, is fundamentally unsuitable to this domain of ultra-fast modulation at optical time scales. We develop the appropriate theoretical description of the electromagnetic response and the resulting phenomena in this regime, and demonstrate not only quantitative but also qualitative differences from the conclusions obtained using the conventional approach.

A Route to Ultra‐Fast Amplitude‐Only Spatial Light Modulation using Phase‐Change Materials

Abstract:The ability to control the amplitude and phase of optical wavefronts has many important applications, including beam steering, image processing, aberration compensation, optical computing, and more. Conventional approaches to wavefront control include liquid crystal spatial light modulators and digital micromirror devices. Here, a novel modulation device is developed using phase‐change materials. This approach maps out a route for ultra‐fast, non‐volatile amplitude‐only spatial light modulators. A phase‐change material based, thin‐film, amplitude‐only spatial light modulator is presented. The modulator operates in reflection and modulates the amplitude of light incident on its surface with no effect on optical phase when the phase‐change material is switched between its amorphous and crystalline states. This is achieved using a thin‐film device with an embedded, switchable, GeTe phase‐change layer. Test modulation patterns are written to the device using laser scans, and the amplitude and phase response measured, using optical spectroscopy and off‐axis digital holography. Experimental results reveal reflected intensity to be modulated by up to 38%, with an averaged phase difference of less than ≈π/50. Since phase‐change materials such as GeTe can be switched on sub‐microsecond timescales, this approach maps out a route for ultra‐fast amplitude spatial light modulators with widespread applications in fields such as wavefront shaping, communications, sensing, and imaging.

Abstract:Multimode optical fibers represent the ideal platform for transferring multidimensional light states. However, dispersion degrades the correlations between the light's degrees of freedom, thus limiting the effective transport of ultrashort pulses between distant nodes of optical networks. Here, we demonstrate that tailoring the spatiotemporal structure of ultrashort light pulses can overcome the physical limitations imposed by both chromatic and modal dispersion in multimode optical fibers. We synthesize these light states with predefined spatial and chromatic dynamics through applying a sequence of transformations to shape the optical field in all its dimensions. Similar methods can also be used to overcome dispersion processes in other physical settings like acoustics and electron optics. Our results will enable advancements in laser-based technologies, including multimode optical communications, imaging, ultrafast light-matter interactions, and high brightness fiber sources.

Sub-cycle modulation of light's Orbital Angular Momentum

Abstract:The exploration of light has traditionally focused on its spatial properties, particularly its orbital angular momentum (OAM), while its temporal dynamics have remained an underexplored frontier due to the slow response times of existing modulation techniques. In this context, we introduce a method to modulate the OAM of light on a femtosecond scale by engineering a controllable space-time coupling in ultrashort pulses. By intricately linking azimuthal position with time, we implement a static, azimuthally varying wavefront transformation to dynamically alter the spatial distribution of light in a fixed transverse plane. Our experiments demonstrate self-torqued wave packets that exhibit spiraling motions and rapid temporal OAM changes down to a few femtoseconds. We further extend this concept to generate wave packets that angularly self-accelerate. We reveal that these wave packets dynamically adjust their OAM by redistributing their energy density across their spectral bandwidth, all without the influence of external forces. Owing to the unique properties of self-torque and angular acceleration, these time-varying OAM beams offer an accessible avenue for exploring light at fundamental time scales, with far-reaching implications for ultrafast spectroscopy, nano- and micro-structure manipulation, condensed matter physics, and other related areas.

Abstract:Dynamic lighting is a potentially promising solution to meet the individual's chronobiologic and psychological needs at specific times of day or for specific activities. Yet, few studies have investigated the impact of dynamic lighting patterns on daytime functioning and nocturnal sleep, and the optimal dynamic lighting pattern remains largely unknown. The current study assessed the effects of a daylong dynamic lighting (DL) pattern with modulations in intensity and spectrum vs. static office lighting (SL) on markers of well-being, cognitive performance, visual experiences and sleep in a simulated office environment. Twenty-one subjects participated in the 48-h balanced crossover laboratory study. The findings revealed time-of-day and experimental-day dependent benefits of the DL vs. SL pattern on daytime vitality, sleepiness, state self-control, mood, performance on a sustained attention task and subsequent subjective sleep quality. Complementing earlier research outcomes reported in the literature, the current study suggests that a dynamic lighting approach could be a practical strategy to support office workers' daytime well-being and nocturnal sleep. Yet, the results revealed no consistent pattern across assessments nor across the different types of metrics at a specific assessment, thus additional research regarding the optimization of lighting parameters and pattern is needed.

Abstract:Wavefront control is the fundamental for various optical elements. Spatial light modulator (SLM), most of which consists of numerous discrete electrically driven micro-size liquid crystal (LC) pixels, could modulate the phase of light dynamically and has attracted intensive attentions. However, the complex electrode matrix makes the SLM costly, optical inefficient, and limiting the quality of output beams. Here, I present an optically addressed LC SLM based on the combination of a rewritable photoalignment agent and a dynamic polarization photo exposing system [1]. This technique enables the accurate, arbitrary and reconfigurable azimuthal angle control of LCs, thus supplies a powerful approach for the manipulation of light. By this means, the tailoring of arbitrary fine microstructures with binary or continuously space-variant liquid crystal azimuthal orientations are demonstrated. Several specially designed patterns and corresponding specific optical fields will be briefly reviewed. High quality vortex beams [2-9], vector beams [10,11] and Airy beams [12,13] which exhibit fantastic properties and have diverse applications are generated with unprecedented flexibility in the design and control of light wavefront. Besides high efficiency, good electrical switchability and broad wavelength tolerance, the proposed devices also exhibit merits of compact size, low cost, dynamic mode conversion, polarization controllable energy distribution and available for short pulse and intense light modulation. This work may pave a bright way towards beam shaping and bring new possibilities for the design of novel advanced liquid crystal photonic devices [14].
