Abstract:Utilizing artificial photosynthesis for the conversion of CO2 into value-added fuels has been recognized as a promising strategy for the ever-increasing energy crisis and the greenhouse effect. Herein, the element doping engineering of red spherical g-C3N4 having oxygen bonded with compositional carbon (C-O-C) for CO2 photoreduction has been explored to address this challenge. The C-O bond was formed by hydrothermal treatment with dicyandiamide and 1,3,5-trichlorotriazine. The experimental and DFT results displayed the optimum oxygen substitution sites and demonstrated that the oxygen doping greatly improved the light utilization efficiency, CO2 affinity, and charge carrier transfer, which enhanced photoreduction efficiency of CO2. The evolution rates of CO (47.2 μmol g-1) and CH4 (9.1 μmol g-1) using O-CN were much higher than that of bulk-CN without a cocatalyst. The main reason was the contribution of the O 2p orbital to the conduction band (CB) and valence band of O-CN, which effectively reduced the electron mass, facilitating electron/hole separation and enhancing its fluidity. Furthermore, the Fermi level also shifted to the bottom of the CB, leading to higher electron density, which further improved the CO2 reduction ability. Our study marks an important step for developing high-performance photocatalysts for reduction of CO2.
Efficient Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction over Co(II) Species Modified CdS in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:Efficient photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into value-added chemical fuels has been a thorny, challenging and long-term project in the environmental/energy fields due to the low efficiency, especially in the inorganic aqueous environment. In this report, we present a facial approach to modify CdS with Co(II) species through controlling decarboxylation of the Co-EDTA precursor for improved CO2 reduction. Performance evaluation and microstructure characterization reveal that the resulted tetra-coordinated Co(II) modified CdS exhibits the most optimized CO evolution rate of 9.8 mu mol h(-1) (i.e., 392 mu mol h(-1) g((catalyst))(-1) with TOF of 7.94 h(-1)) in aqueous solution under visible light, where the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction is significantly inhibited. Further investigation implies that the fully utilized Co(II) active sites, the tetra-coordinated Co(II) species, the favorable interaction between CO2 and Co(II) sites and efficient charge transferring ensured the high efficiency and improved selectivity. This work would provide a good strategy for the structure engineering of catalytic site to improve photocatalytic CO2 reduction.
CdS/ZnO: A Multipronged Approach for Efficient Reduction of Carbon Dioxide under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:Photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to fuels is a sustainable approach to obtain clean energy from CO2 using solar energy. This work focuses on a multipronged approach for efficient photoreduction of CO2 by designing a CdS/ZnO heterojunction photocatalyst. It is found that the combination of CdS and ZnO leads to about 11 times higher activity (383 K) for the reduction of CO2 to fuels than that over CdS under the irradiation of visible light. This is ascribed to the well-matched structural and intrinsic properties of the CdS/ZnO heterojunction, in which generation of electrons and holes by CdS-captured photons, separation and migration of electrons to ZnO by the heterojunction, and efficient adsorption/activation of CO2 on ZnO all work in a concert and harmonious way. This work highlights the potential of improving the performance of CO2 photocatalytic reduction based on a multipronged approach.

Abstract:This study establishes a scalable, inexpensive, and precious‐metal free photocatalytic system for aqueous CO2 reduction using carbon dots as the sole photosensitizer in combination with a molecular cobalt co‐catalyst. A favorable association between the carbon dot and the Co co‐catalyst is achieved by rational chemical design, allowing this homogeneous photocatalytic system to operate with an activity of 7.7 ± 0.2 mmolsyngas gCDs−1 after 24 h simulated solar light irradiation. A simple and precious‐metal free photosystem for the reduction of aqueous CO2 to syngas (CO and H2) is reported consisting of carbon dots (CDs) as the sole light harvester together with a molecular cobalt bis(terpyridine) CO2 reduction co‐catalyst. This homogeneous photocatalytic system operates in the presence of a sacrificial electron donor (triethanolamine) in DMSO/H2O solution at ambient temperature. The photocatalytic system exhibits an activity of 7.7 ± 0.2 mmolsyngas gCDs−1 (3.6 ± 0.2 mmolCO gCDs−1 and 4.1 ± 0.1 mmolH2 gCDs−1) after 24 hours of full solar spectrum irradiation (AM 1.5G). Spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization supports that this photocatalytic performance is attributed to a favorable association between CDs and the molecular cobalt catalyst, which results in improved interfacial photoelectron transfer and catalytic mechanism. This work provides a scalable and inexpensive platform for the development of CO2 photoreduction systems using CDs.

Efficient Infrared‐Light‐Driven CO2 Reduction over Ultrathin Metallic Ni‐doped CoS2 Nanosheets

Abstract:AbstractConverting CO2 and H2O into carbon‐based fuel by IR light is a tough task. Herein, compared with other single‐component photocatalysts, the most efficient IR‐light‐driven CO2 reduction is achieved by an element‐doped ultrathin metallic photocatalyst‐Ni‐doped CoS2 nanosheets (Ni‐CoS2). The evolution rate of CH4 over Ni‐CoS2 is up to 101.8 μmol g−1 h−1. The metallic and ultrathin nature endow Ni‐CoS2 with excellent IR light absorption ability. The PL spectra and Arrhenius plots indicate that Ni atoms could facilitate the separation of photogenerated carriers and the decrease of the activation energy. Moreover, in situ FTIR, DFT calculations, and CH4‐TPD reveal that the doped Ni atoms in CoS2 could effectively depress the formation energy of the *COOH, *CHO and desorption energy of CH4. This work manifests that element doping in atomic level is a powerful way to control the reaction intermediates, providing possibilities to realize high‐efficiency IR‐light‐driven CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Solar-driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction is regarded as a promising way to simultaneously mitigate the energy crisis and CO2 pollution. However, achieving high efficiency of photocatalytic CO2 reduction, especially without the assistance of sacrifice reagents or extra alkaline additives, remains a critical issue. Herein, a photocatalyst of 3D ordered macroporous N-doped carbon (NC) supported CdS quantum dots (3DOM CdSQD/NC) is successfully fabricated toward photocatalytic CO2 reduction via an in situ transformation strategy. Additionally, an amines oxidation reaction is introduced to replace the H2O oxidation process to further boost the photocatalytic CO2 reduction efficiency. Impressively, 3DOM CdSQD/NC exhibits superior activity and selectivity in photocatalytic CO2 reduction coupled with amines oxidation, affording a CO production rate as high as 5210 µmol g−1 h−1 in the absence of any sacrificial agents and alkaline additives. Moreover, 3DOM CdSQD/NC achieves an apparent quantum efficiency of 2.9% at 450 nm. Mechanism studies indicate that the 3D ordered macropores in the NC matrix are beneficial to the transfer of photogenerated carriers. Furthermore, the highly dispersed CdS QDs on the NC skeleton are able to significantly promote the adsorption of both CO2 and amine molecules and depress the CO2 activation energy barriers by stabilizing the *COOH intermediate, directly contributing to the high activity.

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 has drawn much attention as a promising way that can effectively alleviate the issue of global warming and energy crisis. In this work, we fabricated a series of CdS/NH2-UiO-66 composites with varied CdS amounts and tested their capacity for photocatalytic reduction of CO2. The reactions were performed in a solvent-free system and displayed excellent selectivity for CO production without liquid phase products. When the content of CdS in the composite is up to 40 %, the hybrid catalyst produces 105.41 mu mol/g within 6 h, exhibiting remarkable photocatalytic performance, which is much higher than that catalyzed by mechanically mixed CdS and NH2-UiO-66. The brilliant catalytic performance of the composite catalyst is attributed to the formation of heterostructure between the well-dispersed CdS and NH2-UiO-66, which promotes the enhancement of electron transfer during photocatalysis.

Abstract:Excessive carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emission has caused problems associated with environmental pollution and climate deterioration. As a consequence, the selective conversion of CO 2 into liquid fuels by artificial photosynthesis has gained increasing attention. However, the rational design of photocathode to achieve selective CO 2 photoelectroreduction is challenging. Here, we sensitized cuprous oxide (p-nCu 2 O) loaded on hydroxyl iron oxide (FeOOH) with cobalt-doped cadmium sulfide (Co:CdS) quantum dots to prepare a novel photocathode FeOOH/p-nCu 2 O/Co:CdS by sequential electrodeposition and chemical bath deposition. The composite photocathode exhibited a larger photovoltage, which is 1.9 times higher than the pristine counterpart, and was efficient for CO 2 reduction to produce formic acid with high selectivity of up to 82.9% (Faradaic efficiency). Theoretical calculations revealed that the photocathode out-layer Co:CdS quantum dots had increased binding energy toward the key intermediate *OOCH through additional hybridization orbitals to exclusively favor the formation of formic acid. An impurity energy level was revealed to form by doping Co to the CdS-containing composite, which could reduce the photocathode band gap with improved absorption toward visible light, thus remarkably increasing the photoelectrochemical properties. This is the first work undertaking the energy band structure optimization of the photocathode enabled by elemental doping to improve its photoelectrocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Solar-driven CO2 reduction to CO production is often hampered by the kinetically sluggish water photooxidation and fast recombination of photocarriers. Herein, we report a photoredox system of CO2 reduction coupled with biomass-based amines oxidation. Double-shelled CdS nanocages (CdS DSNC) are synthesized by a successive etching‑sulfuration strategy, which delivers impressive CO and difurfurylamine yields of 1226.4 and 5526.5 μmol·g−1·h−1, respectively. Mechanism studies uncover that the double-shelled structure endows CdS DSNC with high accessibility of active sites and short transfer distance for photocarriers. Besides, furfurylamine serves as both the electron donor and the capturer of CO2, thus boosting the photoredox performance.

Abstract:Photoreduction carbon dioxide to hydrocarbons has been recognized as one of the most promising and sustainable solutions to realize solar-to-chemical energy conversion and alleviate environmental pollution. Herein, we prepared g-C3N4 photocatalyst modified by NiS2 quantum dots as co-catalyst based on a seed-mediated hydrothermal process. The composite showed superior activity and stability in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The highest CO evolution rate of 10.68 μmol h−1 g−1 was obtained on NSQD/CN-25 catalyst, which was 3.88-fold as high as unadulterated g-C3N4, and its apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) was 2.03% at 420 nm. During the photoconversion process, the possible intermediate products (such as C O O - , C O 2 - and H C O 3 - ) were detected by in situ FTIR analysis. Notably, the electron transfer from g-C3N4 to NiS2 QDs could effectively accelerate the separation of photoexcited electron–hole pairs. This work paves a new strategy toward designing cost-effective photocatalyst with high performance for photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Artificial photosynthesis has become one of the most attractive strategies for lowering atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) level and achieving the carbon balance; whereas, the fast electron–hole recombination and sluggish charge transfer in photocatalysts are themain stumbling blocks to the applications. Constructing semiconductor nano-heterostructures provides a promising strategy to accelerate the separation and transfer of photoinduced charge carriers for promoting the multielectron CO2 reduction reaction. Herein, a CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 three-component photocatalyst consisting of type II and Z-scheme tandem heterojunctions is skillfully fabricated via the solvothermal synthesis followed with photoinduced deposition. The CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 tandem-heterojunction photocatalyst exhibits superior performance toward the conversion of CO2 to fuels (CO and CH4), compared with the single- and binary-component systems, owing to the favorable energy-level alignment, accelerated charge separation, facilitated water dissociation and sufficient reactive-hydrogen provision. The total consumed electron number of CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 catalyst for CO2 reduction is about 10.5 times that of pure g-C3N4. The photocatalytic mechanism is elucidated according to detailed characterizations and in-situ spectroscopy analyses. This work sheds light on the rational construction of heterojunction photocatalysts to promote the conversion of CO2 to solar fuels, without using any sacrifice reagent or noble-metal cocatalysts.

Abstract:In this work, self-nitrogen-doped carbon microsphere photocatalysts were prepared by hydrothermal and carbonation pyrolysis with first application in photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Coupled with relevant characterization, nitrogen-doped carbon microspheres were successfully prepared and the introduction of nitrogen significantly improved the photogenerated charge separation efficiency and CO 2 photoreduction to CO activity, leading to the highest photocatalytic reduction activity with a CO yield of 185.71 μmol g −1 (9 h) under simulated sunlight irradiation. More importantly, its performance remains at about 98 % after ten consecutive cycle tests, indicating the excellent active stability of self-nitrogen-doped carbon spheres. Possible mechanisms for photocatalytic reduction and the role of nitrogen in photocatalytic adsorption and reduction processes are analyzed and proposed. The research provides novel strategies for the design of bifunctional catalysts that offer robust adsorption and efficient reduction, enabling the sustainable conversion of CO 2 .

Abstract:Excessive emissions of carbon dioxide have led to the greenhouse effect and global warming. Reducing carbon dioxide into high-value-added chemicals through solar energy is a promising approach. Herein, a g-C3N4/TiO2 heterojunction photocatalyst with efficient electron transfer is designed for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The CH4 (18.32 μmol·h−1·g−1) and CO (25.35 μmol·h−1·g−1) evolution rates of g-C3N4/TiO2 are higher than those of g-C3N4 and TiO2. The enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance is attributed to the efficient charge carrier transfer in the g-C3N4/TiO2 heterojunction. The electron transfer route was verified by in situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic CO2 reduction mechanism on g-C3N4/TiO2 was investigated by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). This work provides a strategy for designing a polymer/metallic oxide heterojunction with efficient electron transfer for enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Constructing heterostructures and designing excellent structures to simulate natural photosynthesis are effective ways to efficiently and selectively convert CO2 into products with high energy. Herein, a novel 0D/3D heterostructure composed of Cd0.5Zn0.5S quantum dots and CdIn2S4 nano-octahedron was resoundingly fabricated via a simple solvothermal–coprecipitation method. The optimal yields of CO2 photoreduction to CO and CH4 over the Cd0.5Zn0.5S/CdIn2S4 composite material could reach up to 14.07 and 4.23 μmol/g/h, respectively, which was primarily due to the synergistic effect of the 0D/3D heterostructure and unique morphology, thus accelerating the transfer of light-induced carriers. In addition, the as-fabricated composite exhibited excellent stability and weaker photocorrosion. Abstract:Abstract Photocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide into fuels and valuable chemicals is a promising method for carbon neutralization and solving environmental problems. Through a simple thermal-oxidative exfoliation method, the O element was doped while exfoliated bulk g-C 3 N 4 into ultrathin structure g-C 3 N 4 . Benefitting from the ultrathin structure of g-C 3 N 4 , the larger surface area and shorter electrons migration distance effectively improve the CO 2 reduction efficiency. In addition, density functional thory computation proves that O element doping introduces new impurity energy levels, which making electrons easier to be excited. The prepared photocatalyst reduction of CO 2 to CO (116 μ mol g −1 h −1 ) and CH 4 (47 μ mol g −1 h −1 ).

Enhanced photocatalytic CO2 conversion of a CdS/Co-BDC nanocomposite via Co(ii)/Co(iii) redox cycling

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction into value-added chemical fuels using sunlight as the energy input has been a thorny, challenging and long-term project in the environment/energy fields because of to its low efficiency. Herein, a series of CdS/Co-BDC composite photocatalysts were constructed by incorporating CdS nanoparticles into Co-BDC using a dual-solvent in situ growth strategy for improving photocatalytic CO2 reduction efficiency. The composites were characterized through XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, DRS and EPR techniques in detail. 18% CdS/Co-BDC composites showed superior performance for the photocatalytic CO2 reduction to CO, which was 8.9 and 19.6 times higher than that showed by the pure CdS and Co-BDC, respectively. The mechanism of enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance was analyzed. The CdS/Co-BDC composites showed better adsorption for CO2. Detailed analysis of XPS, transient photocurrent responses, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) shows the existence of strong charge interaction between CdS and Co-BDC and the photo-electrons of CdS can be transferred to Co-BDC. Additionally, Co-oxo of Co-BDC plays the role of a redox-active site and promotes the reduction performance via the method of valence transition of Co(ii)/Co(iii) redox.

Abstract:Solar-driven CO 2 reduction into fuels and sustainable energy has attracted increasing attention around the world. However, the photoreduction efficiency remains low due to the low efficiency of separation of electron–hole pairs and high thermal stability of CO 2 . In this work, we prepared a CdO decorated CdS nanorod for visible light driven CO 2 reduction. The introduction of CdO facilitates the photoinduced charge carrier separation and transfer and acts as an active site for adsorption and activation of CO 2 molecules. Compared with pristine CdS, CdO/CdS exhibits a nearly 5-fold higher CO generation rate (1.26 mmol g −1 h −1 ). In situ FT-IR experiments indicated that CO 2 reduction on CdO/CdS may follow a COOH* pathway. This study reports the pivotal effect of CdO on photogenerated carrier transfer in photocatalysis and on CO 2 adsorption, which provides a facile way to enhance photocatalytic efficiency.
