Abstract:Photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to fuels is a sustainable approach to obtain clean energy from CO2 using solar energy. This work focuses on a multipronged approach for efficient photoreduction of CO2 by designing a CdS/ZnO heterojunction photocatalyst. It is found that the combination of CdS and ZnO leads to about 11 times higher activity (383 K) for the reduction of CO2 to fuels than that over CdS under the irradiation of visible light. This is ascribed to the well-matched structural and intrinsic properties of the CdS/ZnO heterojunction, in which generation of electrons and holes by CdS-captured photons, separation and migration of electrons to ZnO by the heterojunction, and efficient adsorption/activation of CO2 on ZnO all work in a concert and harmonious way. This work highlights the potential of improving the performance of CO2 photocatalytic reduction based on a multipronged approach.

Abstract:This study establishes a scalable, inexpensive, and precious‐metal free photocatalytic system for aqueous CO2 reduction using carbon dots as the sole photosensitizer in combination with a molecular cobalt co‐catalyst. A favorable association between the carbon dot and the Co co‐catalyst is achieved by rational chemical design, allowing this homogeneous photocatalytic system to operate with an activity of 7.7 ± 0.2 mmolsyngas gCDs−1 after 24 h simulated solar light irradiation. A simple and precious‐metal free photosystem for the reduction of aqueous CO2 to syngas (CO and H2) is reported consisting of carbon dots (CDs) as the sole light harvester together with a molecular cobalt bis(terpyridine) CO2 reduction co‐catalyst. This homogeneous photocatalytic system operates in the presence of a sacrificial electron donor (triethanolamine) in DMSO/H2O solution at ambient temperature. The photocatalytic system exhibits an activity of 7.7 ± 0.2 mmolsyngas gCDs−1 (3.6 ± 0.2 mmolCO gCDs−1 and 4.1 ± 0.1 mmolH2 gCDs−1) after 24 hours of full solar spectrum irradiation (AM 1.5G). Spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization supports that this photocatalytic performance is attributed to a favorable association between CDs and the molecular cobalt catalyst, which results in improved interfacial photoelectron transfer and catalytic mechanism. This work provides a scalable and inexpensive platform for the development of CO2 photoreduction systems using CDs.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is considered an effective approach for converting CO2 into high‐value‐added chemicals. However, practical implementation of this technology is limited by the efficiency and stability of photocatalysis. Herein, an interfacial control strategy is proposed to optimize the homogeneous‐heterogeneous hybrid photocatalysis by enhancing the interaction between light‐harvesting semiconductors (LHS) and molecular active centers (MAC). Based on this strategy, self‐assembled organic semiconductors with controlled surface architectures are constructed using 1,6‐bis(phenylethynyl)pyrene building blocks to act as LHS. Combining with the classical MAC, an excellent CO2 photoreduction performance is achieved with a CO turnover number of > 2980 maintaining long‐term stability with a selectivity of > 90%, and an apparent quantum yield of > 2.3%. Theoretical calculations combined with in situ and transient spectroscopy studies reveal that the optimized biphase interface dominates the synergy between the homogeneous and heterogeneous photocatalysts. This strategy and the proposed mechanism of interactions will contribute to the design of future artificial photosynthesis systems. A general strategy for optimizing homogeneous–heterogeneous hybrid photocatalysts is developed to fully utilize the characteristics of both the catalysts. The designed biphase interface enhances the interactions between light‐harvesting organic semiconductors and molecular active center, which exhibits CO2 photoreduction performance with CO turnover number of > 2980 per Co, a selectivity of > 90%, and an apparent quantum yield of > 2.3%.

Abstract:Artificial photosynthesis has become one of the most attractive strategies for lowering atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) level and achieving the carbon balance; whereas, the fast electron–hole recombination and sluggish charge transfer in photocatalysts are themain stumbling blocks to the applications. Constructing semiconductor nano-heterostructures provides a promising strategy to accelerate the separation and transfer of photoinduced charge carriers for promoting the multielectron CO2 reduction reaction. Herein, a CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 three-component photocatalyst consisting of type II and Z-scheme tandem heterojunctions is skillfully fabricated via the solvothermal synthesis followed with photoinduced deposition. The CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 tandem-heterojunction photocatalyst exhibits superior performance toward the conversion of CO2 to fuels (CO and CH4), compared with the single- and binary-component systems, owing to the favorable energy-level alignment, accelerated charge separation, facilitated water dissociation and sufficient reactive-hydrogen provision. The total consumed electron number of CdS/g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 catalyst for CO2 reduction is about 10.5 times that of pure g-C3N4. The photocatalytic mechanism is elucidated according to detailed characterizations and in-situ spectroscopy analyses. This work sheds light on the rational construction of heterojunction photocatalysts to promote the conversion of CO2 to solar fuels, without using any sacrifice reagent or noble-metal cocatalysts.

However, traditional photocatalytic systems based on homogeneous photosensitizers (PSs) usually suffer from high costs and poor stability. Herein, we report all-inorganic perovskite CsPbBr 3 quantum dots (QDs) as a robust PS for efficient visible-light-driven CO 2 photoreduction. This perovskite PS-based photocatalytic system, using NiCo-layered double hydroxide (LDH) as a catalyst, offers 204.4 μmol g -1 h -1 of CO evolution rate and 100% selectivity under visible-light irradiation over 35 h. The efficient electron transfer from CsPbBr 3 QDs to the catalyst is demonstrated by ultrafast transient absorption analysis. The key role of oleylamine on CsPbBr 3 QDs as a sacrificial electron donor in improving the photostability of the photocatalytic system is verified via systematic control experiments. This work sheds light on the rational design of efficient CO 2 photocatalytic systems with low cost and long-term photostability.

Abstract:Constructing heterostructures and designing excellent structures to simulate natural photosynthesis are effective ways to efficiently and selectively convert CO2 into products with high energy. Herein, a novel 0D/3D heterostructure composed of Cd0.5Zn0.5S quantum dots and CdIn2S4 nano-octahedron was resoundingly fabricated via a simple solvothermal–coprecipitation method. The optimal yields of CO2 photoreduction to CO and CH4 over the Cd0.5Zn0.5S/CdIn2S4 composite material could reach up to 14.07 and 4.23 μmol/g/h, respectively, which was primarily due to the synergistic effect of the 0D/3D heterostructure and unique morphology, thus accelerating the transfer of light-induced carriers. In addition, the as-fabricated composite exhibited excellent stability and weaker photocorrosion. Abstract:Efficient photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into value-added chemical fuels has been a thorny, challenging and long-term project in the environmental/energy fields due to the low efficiency, especially in the inorganic aqueous environment. In this report, we present a facial approach to modify CdS with Co(II) species through controlling decarboxylation of the Co-EDTA precursor for improved CO2 reduction. Performance evaluation and microstructure characterization reveal that the resulted tetra-coordinated Co(II) modified CdS exhibits the most optimized CO evolution rate of 9.8 mu mol h(-1) (i.e., 392 mu mol h(-1) g((catalyst))(-1) with TOF of 7.94 h(-1)) in aqueous solution under visible light, where the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction is significantly inhibited. Further investigation implies that the fully utilized Co(II) active sites, the tetra-coordinated Co(II) species, the favorable interaction between CO2 and Co(II) sites and efficient charge transferring ensured the high efficiency and improved selectivity. This work would provide a good strategy for the structure engineering of catalytic site to improve photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Rationally Designed S‐Scheme CeO2/g‐C3N4 Heterojunction for Promoting Visible Light Driven CO2 Photoreduction into Syngas

Abstract:Exploring low‐cost visible light photocatalysts for CO2 reduction to produce proportionally adjustable syngas is of great significance for meeting the needs of green chemical industry. A S‐Scheme CeO2/g‐C3N4 (CeO2/CN) heterojunction was constructed by using a simple two‐step calcination method. During the photocatalytic CO2 reduction process, the CeO2/CN heterojunction can present a superior photocatalytic performance, and the obtained CO/H2 ratios in syngas can be regulated from 1:0.16 to 1:3.02. In addition, the CO and H2 production rate of the optimal CeO2/CN composite can reach 1169.56 and 429.12 μmol g‐1 h‐1, respectively. This superior photocatalytic performance is attributed to the unique S‐Scheme photogenerated charge transfer mechanism between CeO2 and CN, which facilitates rapid charge separation and migration, while retaining the excellent redox capacity of both semiconductors. Particularly, the variable valence Ce3+/Ce4+ can act as electron mediator between CeO2 and CN, which can promote electron transfer and improve the catalytic performance. This work is expected to provide a new useful reference for the rational construction of high efficiency S‐Scheme heterojunction photocatalyst, and improve the efficiency of photocatalytic reduction of CO2, promoting the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into useful fuels.

Synergistic Effect of CdS and NH 2 ‐uio‐66 on Photocatalytic Reduction of CO 2 under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 has drawn much attention as a promising way that can effectively alleviate the issue of global warming and energy crisis. In this work, we fabricated a series of CdS/NH2-UiO-66 composites with varied CdS amounts and tested their capacity for photocatalytic reduction of CO2. The reactions were performed in a solvent-free system and displayed excellent selectivity for CO production without liquid phase products. When the content of CdS in the composite is up to 40 %, the hybrid catalyst produces 105.41 mu mol/g within 6 h, exhibiting remarkable photocatalytic performance, which is much higher than that catalyzed by mechanically mixed CdS and NH2-UiO-66. The brilliant catalytic performance of the composite catalyst is attributed to the formation of heterostructure between the well-dispersed CdS and NH2-UiO-66, which promotes the enhancement of electron transfer during photocatalysis.
Chemically bonded CdS/Bi2MoO6 Z-scheme heterojunction synergises with strong internal electric field for photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Abstract:Constructing strong interfacial electric fields to enhance the surface charge transport kinetics is an effective strategy for promoting CO2 conversion. Herein, we present the fabrication of CdS-Bi2MoO6 Z-scheme heterojunctions with a robust internal electric field (IEF) using an in situ growth technique, establishing chemical bonding between the components. The IEF at the interface can offer an impetus for the segregation and transportation of photogenerated carriers, while the Cd-O chemical bonding mode acts as a rapid conduit for these carriers, thereby reducing the charge transfer distance. As a result, the Z-scheme charge transfer is accelerated due to the synergistic influence of these two factors. Therefore, the optimized CdS/Bi2MoO6 Z-scheme heterojunction possesses significantly enhanced dynamic carrier mobility, thus promoting the conversion of CO2 to CO without the need for additional co-catalysts or sacrificial agents. This optimization yields a remarkable CO selectivity of up to 97%. Meanwhile, the expedited Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism is validated through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Kelvin probe force microscopy, and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy.
Visible-light-driven CO2 reduction to ethylene on CdS: Enabled by structural relaxation-induced intermediate dimerization and enhanced by ZIF-8 coating

Abstract:Visible-light-driven CO2 reduction yielding commodity chemicals such as ethylene holds tremendous potentials for achieving a carbon-neutral circular economy in the energy and chemical industry. Despite the success of electrochemical CO2 reduction, efficient and selective ethylene generation has not been achieved by photocatalytic means because the intermediate dimerization fails to occur on existing photocatalysts. Here, we first demonstrate that the presence of sulfur vacancies in CdS (Sv-CdS) lead to reduced Cd-Cd distance and charge enrichment on Cd atoms. This structural relaxation and associated electronic structure tuning endow successful *CHO dimerization and hence ethylene generation. The photocatalyst can be optimized by coating Sv-CdS with ZIF-8 to form a core-shell structure, which presents further lowered energy barrier for both *CO hydrogenation and *CHO dimerization. With these combined intermediate manipulation strategies, the optimized photocatalyst exhibits a record-high ethylene selectivity of 12.8 % at a production rate of 0.8 μmol g−1 h−1.

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to syngas is a desirable strategy for recycling CO2 into valuable products, meeting energy demands in a sustainable way. Herein, we report the use of non-stoichiometric Ag-In-S quantum dots (QDs) as highly efficient and robust photocatalysts for visible-light-driven photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to syngas at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. The introduction of Co(bpy)32+ (bpy = 2′2-bipyridine) cocatalyst can promote the conversion of CO2 to CO reaction and meanwhile improve the photo-stability of Ag-In-S QDs. The photocatalytic activity and selectivity of Ag-In-S QDs are strongly dependent on the Ag to In molar ratios, and the optimized sample exhibits the highest CO evolution rate of 9.20 μmol h-1 and H2 evolution rate of 3.13 μmol h-1, corresponding to the CO selectivity of 74.61%, outperforming most of the reported QDs based photocatalysts. This work provides a new example of Cd and Pb free QDs photocatalyst for efficient and stable CO2 photoreduction.

Selective conversion of CO 2 to CO under visible light by modulating Cd to In ratio: A case study of Cd-In-S colloidal catalysts

Abstract:Developing an effective photocatalyst to promote CO 2 conversion into solar fuel is necessary for addressing the global challenge of energy sustainability and environmental problems. In this work, we report the facile fabrication of Cd-In-S (CIS) colloidal nanocrystals as an efficient visible light-responsive photocatalyst for the conversion of CO 2 to CO. Both experimental and theoretical investigations reveal the importance of Cd to In ratio which positively influences not only the charge carrier separation rate but also the electronic structure of the CIS samples. In particular, the light absorption ability, redox potential of photo-induced electrons, and charge transfer ability were effectively modulated, endowing the optimized sample with a high CO evolution rate of 22.9 μmol h −1 and selectivity up to 80 % under visible light irradiation. The findings of this work can provide guidance for the design and construction of highly efficient catalytic materials for CO 2 conversion.

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into value‐added chemical fuels is an appealing approach to address energy crisis and global warming. CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) are good candidates for CO2 reduction because of their excellent photoelectric properties, including high molar extinction coefficient, low exciton binding energy, and defect tolerance. However, the pristine CsPbBr3 QDs generally have low photocatalytic performance mainly due to dominant charge recombination and lack of efficient catalytic sites for CO2 adsorption/activation. Herein, we report a new photocatalytic system, in which CsPbBr3 QDs are coupled with covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) for visible‐light‐driven CO2 reduction. In this hybrid photocatalytic system, the robust triazine rings and periodical pore structures of CTFs promote the charge separation in CsPbBr3 and endow them with strong CO2 adsorption/activation capacity. The resulting photocatalytic system exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity towards CO2 reduction. This work presents a new photocatalytic system based on CTFs and perovskite QDs for visible‐light‐driven CO2 reduction, which highlights the potential of perovskite‐based photocatalysts for solar fuel applications.

In the present study, we have synthesized CdS decorated bismuth oxyhalide (Bi24O31Br10) heterojunction as an efficient nanocomposite material for producing methanol from CO2 using water and TEA as the proton source and sacrificial donor, respectively, under visible-light irradiation. The nanocomposite material exhibited the highest 1739 μmol-g−1 yield of methanol in 24 h than the CdS and Bi24O31Br10 with significant recyclability. The improved yield of methanol was observed due to the confinement of CdS nanoparticles into the bulk of Bi24O31Br10, making a Z-scheme heterojunction. Also, the charge separation was improved with the doping of CdS on Bi24O31Br10 semiconductor support. The synthesized semiconductors and nanocomposite materials have been characterized using XRD, FTIR, HR-TEM, XPS, PL, TGA-DTA, PEC analysis, N2 adsorption-desorption analysis, UV–vis, and Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:We report a ternary hybrid photocatalyst architecture with tailored interfaces that boost the utilization of solar energy for photochemical CO2 reduction by synergizing electron and heat flows in the photocatalyst. The photocatalyst comprises cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) molecules assembled on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that are decorated with nearly monodispersed cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs). The CdS QDs absorb visible light and generate electron-hole pairs. The CNTs rapidly transfer the photogenerated electrons from CdS to CoPc. The CoPc molecules then selectively reduce CO2 to CO. The interfacial dynamics and catalytic behavior are clearly revealed by time-resolved and in situ vibrational spectroscopies. In addition to serving as electron highways, the black body property of the CNT component can create local photothermal heating to activate amine-captured CO2 , namely carbamates, for direct photochemical conversion without additional energy input.
Unique S-scheme heterojunctions in self-assembled TiO2/CsPbBr3 hybrids for CO2 photoreduction

Abstract:Abstract Exploring photocatalysts to promote CO 2 photoreduction into solar fuels is of great significance. We develop TiO 2 /perovskite (CsPbBr 3 ) S-scheme heterojunctions synthesized by a facile electrostatic-driven self-assembling approach. Density functional theory calculation combined with experimental studies proves the electron transfer from CsPbBr 3 quantum dots (QDs) to TiO 2 , resulting in the construction of internal electric field (IEF) directing from CsPbBr 3 to TiO 2 upon hybridization. The IEF drives the photoexcited electrons in TiO 2 to CsPbBr 3 upon light irradiation as revealed by in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, suggesting the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction in the TiO 2 /CsPbBr 3 nanohybrids which greatly promotes the separation of electron-hole pairs to foster efficient CO 2 photoreduction. The hybrid nanofibers unveil a higher CO 2 -reduction rate (9.02 μmol g –1 h –1 ) comparing with pristine TiO 2 nanofibers (4.68 μmol g –1 h –1 ). Isotope ( 13 CO 2 ) tracer results confirm that the reduction products originate from CO 2 source.
