Abstract:We demonstrated an ultra-broadband dual-polarization power splitter based on silicon subwavelength gratings (SWGs). Multimode interference (MMI) couplers based on SWG are utilized for power splitting. SWGs with different orientations are combined to form a taperized hetero-anisotropic slab, which contains single mode for TE light but multimode for TM light. Such configuration is utilized to make it possible to design the coupling length of TE light and TM light separately. The geometry parameters such as numbers of periods and duty cycles for the SWGs are engineered to make the two-fold images of different wavelengths and two polarizations located at the same position, which will result in low loss and large bandwidth. Both the simulation and measurement results show that the proposed device can work over a large bandwidth of 420 nm (1.26 ~ 1.68 μm) with loss lower than 1 dB. The footprint of the proposed device is quite small (18.4 μm × 2.8 μm).

Abstract:An ultra-compact broadband 2 x 2 3 dB power splitter is proposed and demonstrated by utilizing a subwavelength- grating (SWG)-assisted asymmetric directional coupler. In the present design, a subwavelength grating is inserted into the straight coupling region of an asymmetric directional coupler, so that the refractive index and the dispersion properties of this structure are engineered for achieving an ultra-broad bandwidth and an ultra-compact footprint. For the present power splitter with a straight coupling region as short as 5.25 mu m, the bandwidth is as large as 300 nm (1400 similar to 1700 nm) for achieving an imbalance of <0.4 dB and an excess loss of <0.33 dB for the fundamental transverse electrical (TE) mode. The fabricated splitter works well with an imbalance less than 0.5 dB and with an excess loss less than 1 dB in a broad wavelength-band from 1450 to 1650 nm.

Abstract:A high uniformity and broad bandwidth Y junction optical beam splitter is proposed and analyzed in this paper based on silicon-on-insulator platform. By replacing the uniform branch with the multimode tapered branch, the bandwidth and the power uniformity of two output ports are unproved prominently. Furthermore, the sensitivity to fabrication accuracy is reduced by widening the splitting angle. The simulation and the experimental results confirm that the bandwidth is larger than 100 nm, the power uniformity of two output ports is enhanced 4 dB, whereas the insertion loss is less than 0.6 dB and the return loss is larger than 26 dB, respectively.

Abstract:We design and experimentally demonstrate a compact and broadband 2 × 2 3 dB optical power splitter engineered by bricked subwavelength gratings (BSWG). In this work, 3D finite difference time domain (FDTD) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) methods are combined to optimize the power splitter. The simulation results show that the coupling length is 6.11 μm, the excess loss (EL) is lower than 0.6 dB and the power splitting ratio is better than 3 ± 0.72 dB within the wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm for the TE mode. Experimental results show EL < 0.77 dB and power splitting ratio better than 3 ± 0.74 dB in a bandwidth of 100 nm (1480 nm–1580 nm, limited by the laser tuning range and grating coupler). Additionally, the minimum feature size of the BSWG is 139 nm, which is larger than that of the conventional SWG (∼100 nm), thereby easing fabrication challenges.

Abstract:A high-performance polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is demonstrated by using asymmetrical directional couplers on a 220nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonics platform. The extinction ratio of the PBS with cascaded directional couplers is > 35 dB for both TE and TM polarizations around the central wavelength of 1550 nm. The bandwidths for an extinction ratio of 20 dB and 30 dB are 275 nm and 230 nm, respectively, for TE polarization, as well as > 300 nm and 225 nm, respectively, for TM polarization. The insertion losses for TE polarization are < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of > 300 nm. The insertion losses for TM polarization are < 1 dB and < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of 218 nm and 174 nm, respectively.

Abstract:A novel polarization beam splitter based on an anti-symmetric sidewall Bragg grating in a multimode silicon-on-insulator strip waveguide is demonstrated. Anti-symmetric spatially periodic refractive-index perturbations are designed for strong coupling between the fundamental (TE0) and the first-order transverse electric modes (TE1), while not for transfer magnetic modes. An adiabatic coupler is cascaded at the input-port, so as to drop the TE1 reflection. The Bragg grating has a compact length of ∼20 μm (55 periods). The polarization isolations of the through- and drop-ports at the wavelength of 1557 nm are 34 and 31 dB, respectively. A broad bandwidth of 64 nm and a large fabrication tolerance of 80 nm for polarization isolation over 20 dB are also achieved.

Abstract:The multimode power splitter is a basic component in mode-division multiplexing systems. In this paper, we propose an ultra-broadband silicon multimode power splitter enabling arbitrary power splitting ratios. The proposed multimode splitter is designed based on a waveguide crossing with an obliquely embedded subwavelength grating (SWG) transflector. The incident multiple guided-modes can be split into two beams with low excess losses and low crosstalk by the SWG transflector where the thin-film interference effect happens. As an example, a silicon multimode power splitter is designed to work with the three lowest-order modes of TE polarization. Any desired splitting ratio ranging from 0% to 100% can be achieved by engineering the structural parameters of the SWG. Moreover, the desired splitting ratio can be very uniform over an extremely broad bandwidth of ≥ 415 nm, covering O-, E-, S-, C-, L- and U-bands. The intermodal crosstalk is < −20 dB for all the input modes in theory. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed structure is the first multimode power splitter enabling any desired power splitting ratios in all the optical communication bands.

Abstract:We designed and demonstrated TE-mode arbitrary power splitters based on adiabatic mode evolution. The power splitters are designed with a footprint of smaller than 12 × 2.9 μm2, fabricated on a 400-nm silicon-on-insulator platform, requiring only a single etch step. The optimization process and the conditions for arbitrary-power splitting are performed using three-dimensional-FDTD simulations. We prove this concept through the fabrication of asymmetrical adiabatic evolution-based power splitters with splitting ratios of 50:50, 60:40, and 70:30. The fabricated devices are shown to agree closely with simulation results. Broadband operation with low insertion loss of 0.11–0.6 dB is demonstrated across the 3.66–3.89 μm wavelength range (230 nm). This component has applications in a multitude of areas such as spectroscopic optical sensing and optical phased arrays photonic integrated circuits etc.

Abstract:An ultra-broadband optical filter based on step-chirped multimode waveguide Bragg grating (SCMWBG) with low insertion loss, high sidelobe suppression ratio (SLSR), compact size and relaxed fabrication accuracy is demonstrated on SOI platform. The grating length of SCMWBG is divided into grating segments with constant periods, and the period of each segment increases in a fixed step length of 1 nm. Each grating segment of the proposed SCMWBG is designed according to the phase-matching condition. The device is fabricated by a 193 nm DUV lithography, and employs complementary lateral-misalignment apodization to suppress the sidelobes. The measured insertion loss, SLSR and 3-dB bandwidth of fabricated SCMWBG are 1.2 dB, 17 dB and 72 nm, respectively.

Abstract:We describe a compact double-layer waveguide grating splitter that not only achieves efficient coupling between single mode fiber and a silicon-on-insulator optical waveguide but also realizes effective splitting. By appropriate choice of waveguide/grating parameters, including thicknesses, periods, height, and fill factor to optimize the mode matching, coupling efficiency is improved and the value of power difference of each output port is also significantly decreased. The maximum of power difference between four output ports is about 6.2%; however, the minimum value is only 0.6% or so. Moreover, the average power difference of four output ports is lower than 10% for TE polarization light over the 10 nm wavelength bandwidth centered at 1: 54 mu m. In addition, the splitter structure has the best tolerance for grating fabrication with deviations of grating depth 90 nm. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on grating-assisted couplers is proposed by utilizing contra-directional coupling between two corrugated strip waveguides. The co-directional coupling in the device is greatly suppressed by the designed asymmetric structure. The phase matching condition is only satisfied for TE polarization at the central wavelength of 1550 nm by a spatially periodic refractive-index perturbation. Due to the contra-directional coupling, the device breaks the limit of the precise control of the coupling strength and length. The simulation results show that the presented PBS, with a coupling length of only 19 μm, has a broad working bandwidth (∼40 nm) for a crosstalk below -12 dB. A large fabrication tolerance (±40 nm) for the waveguide width is also achieved.

Abstract:An ultra-compact broadband silicon polarizing beam splitter is proposed based on a tilted nano-grating structure. A light cross coupling can be realized for transverse-magnetic mode, while the transverse-electric light can almost completely output from the through port. The length of the coupling region is only 6.8 μm, while an extinction ratio of 23.76 dB can be realized at a wavelength of 1550 nm. As a proof of concept, the device was fabricated by a commercial silicon photonic foundry. It can realize a 19.84 dB extinction ratio and an 80 nm working bandwidth with an extinction ratio of larger than 10 dB. The presented device also shows a good fabrication tolerance to the structure deviations, which is favorable for its practical applications in silicon photonics.

Abstract:Power splitters with polarization management features are highly desired to construct high-density silicon photonic integrated circuits. However, few attempts have been made to design a single device that can act as both a power splitter and a TE- or TM-pass polarizer. In this paper, for the first time, we experimentally demonstrate an ultra-compact and broadband all-silicon TM-pass power splitter, where a triple-guide directional coupler (TGDC) composed of three parallel subwavelength holey-structured metamaterial waveguides (SHMWs) is located at central coupling region and three regular strip waveguides are connected at the input/output ports. Such a SHMW can enhance the reflection to realize a wide stop-band for the undesired TE polarized light, while achieving the low loss transmission for the TM polarized light. Besides, the TM dispersion can be significantly flattened by the designed SHMWs, leading to a broadband power splitting for TM polarization. Simulated results show that an ultra-compact device of 1.7 × 4 µm2 in size is obtained with an insertion loss (IL) of 0.34 dB and an extinction ratio (ER) of 36 dB at 1550 nm, and its working bandwidth can be extended to ∼240 nm by keeping IL < 0.9 dB and ER > 16 dB. The measurements of the fabricated devices show low IL (<1 dB) and high ER (>15 dB) over the measured wavelength range of 1460 to 1580 nm, which is consistent with the simulation results.

Abstract:Growing research interests have been directed to the emerging optical communication band at 2-µm wavelengths. The silicon photonic components are highly desired to operate over a broad bandwidth covering both C-band and the emerging 2-µm wave band. However, the dispersions of the silicon waveguides eventually limit the optical bandwidth of the silicon photonic devices. Here, we introduce a topology-optimized Y-junction with a shallow-etched trench and its utility to reverse the detrimental dispersion effect. The shallow trench enables the Y-junction to have an adaptive splitting capability over a broad spectral range. The 0.2-dB bandwidth of the power splitter exceeds 800 nm from 1400 nm to 2200 nm. The device has a compact footprint of 3 µm × 1.64 µm. The device is characterized at the C-band and 2-µm band with a measured excess loss below 0.4 dB for a proof-of-concept demonstration.

Abstract:A novel broadband beam splitter (BS) at a wavelength of 1.55 mu m is proposed and demonstrated, which is based on the form birefringence of subwavelength binary blazed grating and effective-medium theory. Rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) is used to optimize the design of this beam splitter. In order to achieve high coupling efficiency and equal power separation, the grating depth, period and wavelength are optimized, and the double-structure design which consists of symmetrical subwavelength gratings is adopted. Finally, the additional reflectors are also discussed and analyzed. Simulation results for TE polarized wave and TM polarized wave are presented. Using three reflectors, the BS for TE light are designed to split incident light beam into two beams of nearly equal power (41% and 43%), and the power difference of two output ports is less than 3% over a 20 nm wavelength bandwidth range. Simultaneously, the coupling efficiency of TM model for the right and the left branches of waveguide are 33% and 40%, respectively. The power differences of two ports of waveguide are lower than 10% with 80 nm wavelength bandwidth. Both theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the beam splitter designed here has advantages of high coupling efficiency, compact structure and polarization independence. Abstract:In this work, we propose an ultra-broadband and ultra-compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) on a standard silicon-on-isolator platform. Assisted by a tapered subwavelength-grating waveguide and a slot waveguide, the working bandwidth of the directional-coupler-based PBS covers the entire O-, E-, S-, C-, L- and U-bands and the coupling length is only 4.6 mu m. The insertion losses (ILs) of the device are simulated to be less than 0.8 dB and the extinction ratios (ERs) are larger than 10.9 dB at the wavelength range of 1260-1680 nm for both TE and TM polarizations. The experimental results show the average ILs are less than 1 dB for both polarizations at our measured wavelength ranges, which are consistent with the simulation results. Extending the spectral operation of multimode and polarization-independent power splitters through subwavelength nanotechnology

Abstract:Power splitters play a crucial role in virtually all photonic circuits, enabling precise control of on-chip signal distribution. However, state-of-the-art solutions typically present trade-offs in terms of loss, bandwidth, and fabrication robustness, especially when targeting multimode operation. Here, we present a novel multimode 3-dB power splitter based on a symmetric Y-junction assisted by subwavelength grating metamaterials. The inclusion of the metamaterial structure circumvents the practical limitations of conventional Y-junction tips and realizes smooth modal transitions. Simulations for a standard 220-nm-thick silicon-on-insulator platform predict minimal excess loss (< 0.2 dB) for the fundamental and the first-order transverse-electric modes over an ultra-broad 700 nm bandwidth (1300-2000 nm). For the fundamental transverse-magnetic mode, losses are less than 0.3 dB in the 1300-1800 nm range. Experimental measurements validate these predictions in the 1430-1630 nm wavelength range, demonstrating losses < 0.4 dB for all three modes, even in the presence of fabrication deviations of up to \pm 10 nm. We believe that this device is suitable for the implementation of advanced photonic systems requiring high-performance distribution of optical signals.

Abstract:Three single-mode photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) are put together closely to construct three PCWs directional coupler (3PCWDC). It is found that the coupling coefficient of two even modes excited by the input field symmetrically entering 3PCWDC may be increased dramatically by reducing the size scales of dielectric rods between the neighbouring PCWs. The coupling length in this structure can be much shorter than that in conventional PCWs within the frequency range of interest. The application of this feature to an ultracompact, wide bandwidth and high-transmission power splitter is addressed. The simulation results by using the finite-difference time-domain method show that the structure exhibits new interesting characteristics.

Abstract:We propose a novel broadband polarizing beam splitter with a compact sandwich structure that has a subwavelength grating in the quasi-static domain as the filling. The design is based on effective-medium theory an anisotropic thin-film theory, and the performance is investigated with rigorous coupled-wave theory. The design results show that the structure can provide a high polarization extinction ratio in a broad spectral range.
