Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) nanosheet is a potential material for sensing applications. The g-CN nanosheet films deposited on microfibers were first fabricated and employed for relative humidity (RH) optical sensing. The RH sensitivity of microfibers was significantly enhanced via g-CN nanosheet coating, the optical transmitted power of coated microfiber humidity sensor was changed similar to 10.6 dB when the RH varied from 40% to 95%. In addition, fast response time of 0.43 s and recovery time of 0.87 s were demonstrated by monitoring human breathing. The g-CN nanosheet coated microfiber humidity sensor possesses excellent stability, repeatability, reversibility, and cost-effectivity. The experimental results validate that the microfiber combined with g-CN nanosheets is a promising platform for environmental and biological RH sensing applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-sensitivity relative humidity (RH) sensor based on microfiber coated with three-dimensional graphene network (3-DGN). The 3-DGN was fabricated by self-assembly of polystyrene (PS) microspheres which were each covered by reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image and the Raman spectra indicated that the rGO nanosheets effectively covered the surface of each PS microsphere, with the 3D rGO network serving as the active material. Absorption of water molecules by the 3-DGN layer increases the effective refractive index of the 3-DGN cladding, leading to the decreasing of optical transmission power. Due to the high surface-to-volume ratios of the 3-DGN, which enhances its interaction with the water molecules, the sensor achieved a high linear humidity sensitivity of -4.118 dB/%RH over the humidity range 79.5-85.0 %RH and -0.224 dB/%RH over the range 50.5-70.6 %RH. Such high performance shows that the microfiber coated with 3-DGN has great potential for application in widespread fields, such as chemical and food processing and biology.

Abstract:In this paper, nanofibers composed of polyaniline, silicon-containing polyelectrolytes and PEO were deposited on interdigitated gold electrodes by electrospinning to construct a humidity nanosensor. The resistance of the nanosensor changed for three orders of magnitude in the humidity range of 22 -95% RH, indicating a high sensitivity. In addition, it showed good linearity (R2=0.966) on a semi-logarithmic scale, very small hysteresis (2% RH) and fast response time (t90%: 7s and 19s for adsorption and desorption, respectively). Moreover, the decoration of electrode with polyelectrolyte is proved to effectively improve the contact between the nanofibers and the gold electrode.

Abstract:An all-fiber humidity sensor is proposed and fabricated by depositing three-dimensional graphene network (3DGN) around the surface of a freestanding microfiber (MF). The high specific surface area and porosity of 3DGN enhances its interaction with water molecules, allowing high performance of the humidity sensor. The sensor can operate in a wide relative humidity (RH) range of 11.6%RH-90.9%RH with a high sensitivity of -2.841 dB/%RH in the RH range (80.3%RH - 90.9%RH). The response and recovery times of this type of microfiber sensor are measured respectively to be 57 ms and 55 ms, which are one order magnitude faster than those of other fiber RH sensors activated by two-dimensional materials coating. Such an all-fiber RH sensor with high sensitivity and fast response property possesses great potential of application in widespread fields, such as biology, chemical processing and food processing.

Abstract:Relative humidity (RH) is an important physical quantity in industry, agriculture, and medical treatment. However, it is still challenging to exploit high-performance humidity sensors that can meet the detection requirement for responding to both high humidity variation and low humidity variation. In this work, ternary graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheet/TiO2 nanoparticle/Ti3C2Tx nanosheet composites were synthesized by in situ oxidation and thermal polymerization. The response of the g-C3N4/TiO2/Ti3C2Tx sensor reaches 531 from 11–95% RH, which enhances 4, 11, and 450 times compared with that of TiO2, g-C3N4, and TiO2/Ti3C2Tx sensors. Moreover, the ternary g-C3N4/TiO2/Ti3C2Tx sensor demonstrates excellent reproducibility, fast response speed, low hysteresis loop, and good anti-interference ability. The as-fabricated g-C3N4/TiO2/Ti3C2Tx sensor is further utilized in practical applications for human respiration detection and evaluation of waxing of fruits. The test results show that our fabricated sensor is capable of precisely sensing breathing status and distinguishing the waxing of fruits. Abstract:Humidity sensors have been widely used for humidity monitoring in industrial fields, while the unsatisfied flexibility, time-consuming or expensive integration process of conventional inorganic sensors significantly limits their application in wearable electronics. Paper-based humidity sensors are considered a feasible method to overcome these drawbacks due to its good flexibility and roll-to-roll manufacturability, while still suffers problems like poor durability and low sensitivity. In this study, we report a high-performance paper-based humidity sensor based on a rationally designed bilayer structure consisting of a nano-porous cellulose nanofiber/carbon nanotube (CNF/CNT) sensitive layer and a micro-porous paper substrate. The vast number of hydrophilic hydroxyl groups on the surface of CNF and paper fibers enables fast water molecules exchange between the humidity sensitive material and the external environment via hydrogen bonding, endowing the paper-based sensor with an excellent humidity responsive property. The obtained sensor displays a maximum response value of 65.0% (ΔI/I0) at 95% relative humidity (RH). Furthermore, the mechanical interlocking structure formed between the CNF/CNT layer and the paper layer provides the sensor with strong interlayer adhesion. Benefiting from the unique structure, the sensor also exhibits outstanding bending (with maximum curvature of 22.2 cm-1) and folding durability (up to 50 times). Finally, as a proof of concept, a simple humidity measuring device is assembled, which demonstrates an excellent responsive property to human breath and the change of air humidity, indicating a great potential of our paper-based humidity sensor towards practical applications.

Abstract:Flexible and highly sensitive humidity sensors are crucial for humidity detection. In this study, a flexible cellulose nanofiber/carbon nanotube (NFC/CNT) humidity sensor with high sensitivity performance was developed via fast vacuum filtration. CNTs were well dispersed in water by using 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized NFC as a dispersant. More importantly, NFC also acted as a humidity sensitive material, achieving superior performance of NFC/CNT humidity sensors. The obtained NFC/CNT humidity sensor with 5 wt % CNT loading exhibits outstanding sensitive performance, and its response value reaches a maximum of 69.9% (Δ I/ I0) at 95% relative humidity (RH). It also displays good bending resistance and long-term stability. In addition, the NFC/CNT humidity sensor was employed to monitor human breath. Therefore, we believe that the flexible, highly sensitive, and simply designed NFC/CNT humidity sensor is a promising candidate for various applications in the field of humidity measurement.

Electrospun nanofibers of polymer composite as a promising humidity sensitive material

Abstract:Nanofibers of a composite of a silicon-containing polyelectrolyte, polyethylene oxide and polyaniline (PANI) were obtained by electrospinning and heat treatment. The morphologies of the composite nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, which showed that the nanofibers with a diameter of 250–500nm formed a non-woven mat with highly porous structure. It was found that the polymer composite nanofibers showed impedance change from 6.3×106 to 2.5×104Ω with the increment of relative humidity (RH) from 22 to 97% at room temperature, exhibiting high sensitivity and good linearity on a semi-logarithmic scale. In addition, they exhibited fast and highly reversible response characterized by very small hysteresis of ∼2% RH and short response time (t90%: 7s and 19s for adsorption and desorption between 33 and 97%RH, respectively). The modification of the electrode with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) prior to the deposition of nanofibers improved their humidity response, which may be related to the enhanced contact between the nanofibers and underlying substrate. The effect of PANI on the humidity response of the composite nanofibers was also investigated, and it was found that PANI effectively decreased the impedance of the nanofibers. The electrospun polymer composite nanofibers may find applications in the preparation of high performance humidity sensors.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a promising material for humidity sensors and wearable electronics due to their solution capability, good flexibility, and high conductivity. However, the performance of CNT-based humidity sensors is limited by their low sensitivity and slow response. Herein CNTs and hydrophilic polymers were mixed to form a composite. The hydrophilicity of the polymers and the network structure of the CNTs empowered the humidity sensors with a high response of 171% and a fast response/recovery time of 23 s/10 s. Owing to the sticky and flexible polymers, the humidity sensors showed strong adhesion to the PET substrate and exhibited outstanding bending durability. Furthermore, the flexible humidity sensor was applied to monitor human breathing and detect finger movements and handshaking.

Abstract:Two polyelectrolytes, i.e., cationic poly(diallydimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and anionic sodium poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PSSNa), were separately mixed with graphene oxide (GO) and hydrazine in solution, and heat-treated to result in composites of PDDA/graphene (GN) and PSSNa/GN, respectively. The composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmittance electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Impedance-type humidity sensors were constructed by depositing the composite films onto interdigitated gold electrodes via dip-coating. The electrical response of the composite humidity sensors toward relative humidity (RH) was investigated at room temperature. It was found that the composites with higher content of GN exhibited lower impedance at low humidity levels. Both composite sensors could detect very low humidity (down to 0.2%RH), and showed good response magnitude in the low humidity range (relative impedance change of 300% and 1000% from 0.2 to 30%RH for PSSNa/GN and PDDA/GN, respectively). Moreover, the composites exhibited slight hysteresis similar to that of the polyelectrolytes alone, while their response time for desorption was even reduced. The sensing mechanism of the composites was explored by complex impedance spectra analysis, and the good sensing behavior at low humidity was proposed to the special electrical property and unique two-dimensional nanosheet structure of GN.

Abstract:This paper reported the impedance-type humidity sensor based on Ti 3 C 2 T x /g-C 3 N 4 nanomaterials which was fabricated on a flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements were used to demonstrate the successful synthesis and combination of Ti 3 C 2 T x and g-C 3 N 4 nanomaterials. The performance of the humidity sensor was tested at room temperature. The experimental results showed that the Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets with g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets endowed the humidity sensor with an ultra-high response, rapid response/recovery time, and negligible hysteresis. The complex impedance spectroscopy (CIS) and bode diagrams were used to further analyze the sensing mechanism of the Ti 3 C 2 T x /g-C 3 N 4 humidity sensor. The Ti 3 C 2 T x /g-C 3 N 4 humidity sensor can monitor skin humidity and high-humidity alarm, which demonstrates great potential applications in various fields.

Abstract:Recently, some fiber sensing applications by coating graphene oxide or reduce graphene oxide have been proposed. In this paper, a novel humidity sensor based on core-offset fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer coated graphene oxide film has been carried out. Here, we use the chemical method to deal with the surface of the fiber first, and then coated graphene oxide on the surface of the optical fiber sensing arm. The sensitivity of 0.104dB/%RH with a linear correlation coefficient of 99.61% and good stability under the relative humidity range of 30%-60% was obtained.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates a highly sensitive humidity sensor based on carbon nanotube and poly (dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) composite films. The composite film is deposited between interdigitated electrodes on a Si/SiO2 substrate through layer-by-layer self-assembly technique. The resistance stability of the composite film is effectively improved through thermal annealing, and I-V characteristic of the film exhibits a very good linear behavior. The resistance increases exponentially with relative humidity from 20% to 98%, and a much higher sensitivity in comparison with pure carbon nanotube networks is achieved. With temperature increased, the water vapor density versus RH shifts upwards, while the resistance is reduced downwards. The resistance is dependent on temperatures with a negative coefficient. The composite films with multiwalled carbon nanotubes show an adjacent sensitivity, compared with the single-walled carbon nanotube composite films. The experimental results show that the humidity sensors have a fast response and a short recovery time, and their response is reversible. A simple model is proposed to explain the change of composite film resistance with humidity. The carbon nanotubes junctions may play a more important role in the overall resistance change for water molecule absorption.
Ultra-Sensitive and Fast Humidity Sensors Based on Direct Laser-Scribed Graphene Oxide/Carbon Nanotubes Composites

Abstract:In this paper, the relative humidity sensor properties of graphene oxide (GO) and graphene oxide/multiwalled nanotubes (GO/MWNTs) composites have been investigated. Composite sensors were fabricated by direct laser scribing and characterized using UV-vis-NIR, Raman, Fourier transform infrared, and X-ray photoemission spectroscopies, electron scanning microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and impedance spectroscopy (IS). These methods confirm the composite homogeneity and laser reduction of GO/MWNT with dominant GO characteristics, while ISresults analysis reveals the circuit model for rGO-GO-rGO structure and the effect of MWNT on the sensor properties. Although direct laser scribing of GO-based humidity sensor shows an outstanding response (|ΔZ|/|Z| up to 638,800%), a lack of stability and repeatability has been observed. GO/MWNT-based humidity sensors are more conductive than GO sensors and relatively less sensitive (|ΔZ|/|Z| = 163,000%). However, they are more stable in harsh humid conditions, repeatable, and reproducible even after several years of shelf-life. In addition, they have fast response/recovery times of 10.7 s and 9.3 s and an ultra-fast response time of 61 ms when abrupt humidification/dehumidification is applied by respiration. All carbon-based sensors’ overall properties confirm the advantage of introducing the GO/MWNT hybrid and laser direct writing to produce stable structures and sensors.

Carbon Nanotubes/Graphene Oxide Composite Applications in Fiber RH Sensor

Abstract:We propose a high-sensitivity optical fiber relative humidity (RH) sensor based on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/graphene oxide (GO) composite, which functions as the humidity-sensitive film. The optical component of this demonstrated sensor is a single-mode fiber-solid core fiber-single-mode fiber-based multimode interference structure. For the composite sensitive film, GO is used as a dispersant for two types of MWCNTs with different lengths. Subsequently, GO-dispersed MWCNT hybrid films are formed on fiber surfaces by the dip-coating method. Herein, the hydroxylated MWCNTs can function as supporting structures to avoid the formation of layer-by-layer stacked GO, and this destacking humidity-sensitive film is beneficial to enhance water molecules’ absorptive capacity. To clarify the principle, the interaction between composite humidity-sensitive film and water molecules is investigated. The experimental results reveal that the interference fringe shows a redshift with the increase in RH. When RH changing from 40% to 90%, the sensor probe with long-range MWCNT-based film has higher sensitivity than that with short-range MWCNT-based film, which demonstrates the effect of the supporting action of MWCNTs. Besides, a larger specific surface area and pore size of long-range GO-MWCNTs benefit sensitivity enhancement. In addition, this proposed sensor has good repeatability, stability, and a large linear measurement range (40% RH–90% RH).

Abstract:This work introduces a novel humidity sensor based on a nanocomposite material comprising graphene decorated with three-dimensional flower-like structures of zinc oxide (Gr/3D–ZnO) fabricated via a hydrothermal method with various weight percentages of graphene. The surface structure and morphology of the Gr/3D–ZnO nanocomposite were analyzed using XRD, EDS, SEM, TEM, and Raman spectroscopy. The influence of humidity on the electrical properties of the nanocomposite was also investigated. Experiment results revealed that the nanocomposite with 70 wt% of graphene provided high sensitivity (S = 446) with rapid response times (120 s) and recovery times (160 s). These results demonstrate the excellent potential of the proposed Gr/3D–ZnO nanocomposite in monitoring atmospheric humidity. A discussion on the mechanism underlying the effects of humidity on the Gr/3D–ZnO nanocomposite is also provided.

Graphene oxide/cellulose nanofiber-based capacitive humidity sensor with high sensitivity

Abstract:A capacitive humidity sensor based on graphene oxide/cellulose nanofibers (GO/CNF) is proposed in this work. The sensing characteristics of the humidity sensor at different relative humidities (RH) are investigated. The results demonstrate that the GO/CNF-based sensor has a high humidity sensitivity (1146.8 pF /% RH), which is nearly 19 times higher than the pure CNF sensor and almost 2.6 times greater than the pure GO sensor. This is due to the fact that the incorporation of CNF into the GO/CNF film introduces additional hydrophilic functional groups and causes an increase in film roughness and wrinkling. This increases the number of water molecule adsorption sites on the GO/CNF composite film on the one hand, and expands the contact area of the GO/CNF composite film with water molecules on the other hand, resulting in a GO/CNF-based humidity sensor with high response sensitivity. Moreover, the sensor shows rapid response and recovery rates, as well as low hysteresis characteristics. Therefore, this research suggests that GO/CNF hybrid films possess considerable potential for the production of high-performance humidity sensors.
