Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a 56-Gb/s vestigial sideband (VSB) modified duobinary (MDB) 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) signal transmission over an 80-km single-mode fiber (SMF) in an intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) system without optical dispersion compensation. Compared to the conventional PAM4 signal without pulse shaping, the MDB PAM4 signal exhibits a higher spectral efficiency (SE) due to the modified duobinary precoding. Moreover, if VSB modulation is employed to mitigate the chromatic dispersion (CD)-induced power fading, the VSB MDB PAM4 signal suffers less image interference resulting from VSB filtering and direct detection (DD), thanks to its lower components at the carrier frequency. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed, in which the performances of the conventional VSB PAM4 signal, the VSB Nyquist PAM4 signal, and the VSB MDB PAM4 signal are investigated and compared comprehensively. The experimental results show that only the VSB MDB PAM4 signal can reach the bit error ratio (BER) below the 20% soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2.4 x 10(-2) at the 56-Gb/s rate after the 80-km SMF transmission, due to the mitigated image interference.

Abstract:An optical amplification-free deep reservoir computing (RC)-assisted high-baudrate intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) system is experimentally demonstrated using a 100G externally modulated laser operated in C-band. We transmit 112 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) and 100 Gbaud 6-level PAM (PAM6) signals over a 200-m single-mode fiber (SMF) link without any optical amplification. The decision feedback equalizer (DFE), shallow RC, and deep RC are adopted in the IM/DD system to mitigate impairment and improve transmission performance. Both PAM transmissions over a 200-m SMF with bit error rate (BER) performance below 6.25% overhead hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold are achieved. In addition, the BER of the PAM4 signal is below the KP4-FEC limit after 200-m SMF transmission enabled by the RC schemes. Thanks to the use of a multiple-layer structure, the number of weights in deep RC has been reduced by approximately 50% compared with the shallow RC, whereas the performance is comparable. We believe that the optical amplification-free deep RC-assisted high-baudrate link has a promising application in intra-data center communications.

Abstract:Advanced modulation formats with intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) have shown promise in a short-reach optical communication system like data center interconnect. However, the conventional fiber transmission spectral window is mostly located at 850, 1310, and 1550 nm. Here, we experimentally demonstrated an amplifierless IM/DD link at the 2-mu m spectral band. The signal is encoded with pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and 3-D carrier-less amplitude and phase modulation (3-D-CAP). The encoded signal is transmitted through a 100 m-long solid-core fiber designed for single mode at 2-mu m. We achieve a transmission with bit-rate of 40 Gbit/s using PAM-4 and 24 Gbit/s using CAP16. The measured bit error rates of both formats are below the forward error correction (FEC) limit of 3.8 x 10(-3). This study is the first demonstration of PAM4 and CAP transmission at 2-mu m, and the results show a significant potential of advanced modulation for 2-mu m optical communication.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate the intensity modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) 112-Gb/s single carrier pulse amplitude modulation (PAM)-4 transmission system over 80-km standard signal-mode fiber (SSMF) without any optical chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation at the 3.8×10−3 BER threshold for 7% the hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC). The training based pre-equalization (pre-EQ) and the nonlinear look-up-table (LUT) based pre-distortion (pre-DT) in the transmitter (Tx)-side are employed to reduce the computation complexity and deal with the modulation bandwidth and the nonlinearity impairments of electro-optical modulators and detectors. On the other hand, the system without optical CD compensation modules is obviously more simple and flexible. Therefore, the nonlinear LUT pre-DT simultaneously used for CD compensation will further simplify the system. The BER is about 20% without any digital signal processing (DSP) such as equalization, pre-distortion, pre-equalization or compensation. After signal recovery, the BERs of BTB and 80-km SSMF system can achieve 3.07×10−5 and 1.50×10−3 respectively. The principle of the LUT based pre-DT and the pre-EQ are introduced in the paper.

Abstract:We propose a novel W-band pulse amplitude modulation-4 (PAM4) signal generation to simplify the complexity of central office (CO), remote access unit (RAU) and wireless terminals. Only one dual-polarization Mach-Zehnder Modulator (DP-MZM) is used and no extra optical link is occupied. Moreover, mull-level digital-to analog converter (DAC) is not necessary. In this paper, we theoretically analyze and experimentally demonstrate the proposed method. After 1 m wireless propagation, the 84 GHz W-band signal can carry up 10 G baud data with a bit error rate (BER) less than the hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8x10-3 with the photodiode (PD) input power of 0 dBm.

Abstract:We present a method to mitigate the chromatic dispersion (CD)-induced power fading effect (PFE) in high-speed and short-reach carrier-less amplitude and phase (CAP) systems using the degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) effect and a decision feedback equalizer (DFE). Theoretical and numerical investigations reveal that DFWM components produced by the interaction between the main carrier and the signal sideband help to mitigate PFE in direct detection systems. By optimizing the launch power, a maximum reach of 60 km in single mode fiber (SMF-e + ) at 1530nm is experimentally demonstrated for a 40 Gbit/s CAP32 system. In addition, we study the performance of a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) and a traditional linear equalizer (LE) in a channel with non-flat in-band frequency response. The superior PFE tolerance of DFE is experimentally validated, and thereby, the maximum reach is extended to 80 km. To the best of our knowledge, this is the twice the longest transmission distance reported so far for a single-carrier 40 Gbit/s CAP system around 1550 nm.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate C-band 2 x 56 Gb/s pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM)-4 signal transmission over 100 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) using 18 GHz direct-modulated lasers (DMLs) and direct detection, without inline optical amplifier. A delay interferometer (DI) at the transmitter side is used to extend the transmission reach from 40 to 100 km. A digital Volterra filter at the receiver side is used to mitigate the nonlinear distortions. We obtain an average bit error ratio (BER) of 1.5 x 10(-3) for 2 x 56 Gb/s PAM-4 signal after 100 km SSMF transmission at the optimal input power, which is below the 7% forward error correction (FEC) threshold (3.8 x 10(-3)). Abstract:Directly modulated laser (DML) and direct detection (DD) based pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM) for short reach optical communications has attracted lots of research interests due to its low cost and simple configuration. However, the directly modulated PAM signal usually suffers from distortions after the transmission over a dispersion uncompensated link. Due to the adiabatic chirp of the DML working in a high output power region, different intensity levels of the PAM signal correspond to different frequency offsets, thus resulting in amplitude-dependent skew after the transmission over a dispersion uncompensated link. It will degrade signal quality and limit transmission distance. In this article, we, for the first time, propose a computational efficient piecewise linear (PWL) equalizer to correct the amplitude-dependent skew due to the interaction between the DML chirp and chromatic dispersion in the fiber. By using the PWL equalizer, the amplitude-dependent skew is corrected, and we successfully transmit 56 Gb/s PAM-4 signal over 40 km and 84 Gb/s PAM-4 signal over 20 km dispersion uncompensated link in the C band, with a bit error ratio (BER) below the HD-FEC threshold (3.8 x 10(- 3)). To demonstrate the low computational complexity of the PWL, we compare its complexity with 2nd order Volterra equalizer for a similar BER performance. The results show that the computational complexity can be reduced by 61.4% and 40.4% for the 56 Gb/s and 84 Gb/s PAM-4 signal transmission, respectively.

Abstract:The precoding technique has been widely studied in multi-carrier modulation systems such as discrete multi-tone (DMT), due to its ability to equalize subcarrier signal-to-noise (SNR) and reduce signal peak-to-average power ratio. In this work, we implement a low-complexity real-time 30-GSa/s DMT transceiver on a single field programmable gate array chip, enabled by simplified fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithms and timing synchronization, block precoding (BP) and partial pre-emphasis (PPE) techniques. Four software-selectable BP techniques, i.e., the traditional concatenated BP (CBP) and the interleaved BP (IBP) based on FFT or fast Walsh–Hadamard transform (FWHT), and complete pre-emphasis (CPE) or PPE schemes are implemented in the transceiver. FWHT-CBP/IBP saves 60% on-chip registers and 67% look-up tables and 100% multipliers compared to FFT-CBP/IBP. Besides, more than 35% multipliers for the transceiver are reduced with the simplified FFTs in comparison with Spiral FFTs. The real-time transceiver is investigated in a short-reach intensity modulation and direct detection transmission system. The results exhibit that IBP can afford better SNR equalization and outperform CBP ones, and FWHT-IBP has a similar bit error rate (BER) performance to FFT-IBP. With the help of FWHT-IBP and PPE, the real-time 40-Gbit/s 16-QAM-DMT signals are successfully transmitted over 20-km standard single-mode fiber link with the BER below 3.8e-3 during 5-hour continuous measurements.

Abstract:In this letter, transmission of directly-modulated PAM-4 in C-band is experimentally demonstrated. Instead of introducing any optical devices for dispersion management, we employ receiver-side equalization consisting of Volterra-based FFE and Volterra-based DFE, to mitigate the signal distortions induced by the frequency chirp effect and chromatic dispersion. Results indicate that, PAM-4 transmissions of 56 Gbps over 60-km and 60 Gbps over 80-km are achieved respectively under the HD-FEC limit (3.8 x 10(-3)) and SD-FEC limit (2.2 x 10(-2)).

Abstract:The limited band of optical and electrical devices in an intensity-modulation direct detection (IM/DD) system is considered to be a major bottleneck that hinders the increase in transmission capacity. Spectrally efficient modulation formats and advanced digital signal processing are key technologies to improving the performance of IM/DD for high-speed short-reach optical systems. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel Nyquist eight-level, pulse-amplitude, single-carrier modulation with frequency-domain equalization (PAM8-SCFDE). In addition, 40-GBd Nyquist PAM8-SCFDE signals can be successfully transmitted over 2-km standard single-mode fiber or 20-km large effective area fiber based on 10-G-class DAC and photodiode. Therefore, the achieved aggregate data rate is 120 Gb/s, and the measured bit error rate (BER) is under 7% pre-forward-error-correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10-3. Compared with conventional PAM8, this scheme can provide double spectral efficiency and 6-dB receiver sensitivity improvement.

Abstract:In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate a 1550-nm direct modulation laser (DML)-based dual-band Nyquist PAM-4 intensity modulation direct detection (IMDD) system using a real-time field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based receiver. Although the sampling rate of the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) used in the receiver is only 5-GSa/s and there is no mixer at the receiver side, the system can successfully realize 22-km SSMF transmission with 20-Gb/s data rate by using super-Nyquist sampling technique. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of non-single-band signal transmission over IMDD system based on super-Nyquist sampling technique. In addition, power weighting technique is also applied in the system. The experimental results show that with the help of power weighting technique, the BER of the system can be reduced from 6.1×10-3 to 2.6×10-3.

Abstract:In this work, we experimentally demonstrated a 112 Gbit/s polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) transmission over 80-km single mode fiber (SMF) using digital coherent detection without optical amplifier and CD compensation for the short reach applications. Here, a signal-phase aided least-mean-square (SP-LMS) equalization algorithm is proposed to avoid the effects of carrier frequency offset and phase noise. Without additional carrier recovery algorithms, the PDM-PAM4 system shows good transmission performance. The received optical power (ROP) penalty is only about 0.2 dB after 80 km transmission comparing to back-to-back (BTB) transmission. A receiver sensitivity of -20dBm (at 7% FEC limit) can be reached after 80-km transmission.
Digital Dispersion Pre-Compensation Based on Intensity Modulator and Phase Modulator for PAM-4 in Short-Reach Fibre Communications

Abstract:High-speed PAM-4 is a promising way for future low-cost short-reach fibre communications. However, for 1550 nm transmission with the lowest attenuation for standard single-mode fibre (SSMF), the fibre dispersion-induced inter-symbol interference (ISI) becomes non-linear in direct detection. Dispersion pre-compensation at the transmitter side is necessary to avoid such non-linear ISI. Different from previous methods to generate the vector signal from dispersion pre-compensation using IQ modulators, in this study a digital dispersion pre-compensation (DDPC) scheme based on an intensity modulator (IM) plus a phase modulator (PM) is studied. Taking into account the digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) bandwidth limit on the vector signal generation, anti-aliasing filtering on both the magnitude signal and the phase signal should be applied. The error rate performance of the IM-PM based DDPC scheme is analysed in detail using numerical simulations. For 50 Gb/s PAM-4 transmission at 1550 nm over SSMF, over 50 km fibre transmission can be supported if the two DACs have enough bandwidth larger than 17.5 GHz. If the DAC bandwidth is limited to 15 GHz, it is also possible to transmit over 20 km SSMF. Meanwhile, it is verified that practical 5-bit DAC resolution is enough for the IM-PM based DDPC scheme to work for a wide range of SSMF lengths.

Intensity Directed Equalizer for the Mitigation of DML Chirp Induced Distortion in Dispersion-Unmanaged C-band PAM Transmission

Abstract:The directly modulated laser (DML) is one of the most cost-effective transmitter options in optical communication systems, but it introduces an additional impairment caused by the interaction between frequency chirp and chromatic dispersion for C-band transmission. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity intensity directed equalizer based on feedforward equalizer and decision feedback equalizer (FFE/DFE) to mitigate the chirp induced distortions, and remarkably improve the transmission performance of PAM signals generated by DML. The equalizer is based on the fact that the directly modulated PAM symbols with different intensity levels have different chirp frequencies, which will lead to different inter-symbol interference (ISI) contributions to their adjacent symbols due to the velocity difference caused by chromatic dispersion. To address this phenomenon, the proposed equalizer employs multiple sets of tap coefficients according to the intensity levels of PAM signals. With this equalizer and a commercial 16.8GHz DML, we demonstrate a 56Gb/s PAM4 transmission over a record 43km SSMF in the C-band without optical dispersion compensation under the 3.8 x 10(-3) HD-FEC BER threshold. Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel polar coded intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system for short reach system. A method of evaluating the channel signal noise ratio (SNR) is proposed for soft-demodulation. The experimental results demonstrate that, compared to the conventional case, ∼9.5 dB net coding gain (NCG) at the bit error rate (BER) of 1E-3 can be achieved after 40-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) transmission. Based on the experimental result, (512,256) polar code with low complexity and satisfactory BER performance meets the requirement of low latency in short reach system, which is a promising candidate for latency-stringent short reach optical system.
