Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a 56-Gb/s vestigial sideband (VSB) modified duobinary (MDB) 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) signal transmission over an 80-km single-mode fiber (SMF) in an intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) system without optical dispersion compensation. Compared to the conventional PAM4 signal without pulse shaping, the MDB PAM4 signal exhibits a higher spectral efficiency (SE) due to the modified duobinary precoding. Moreover, if VSB modulation is employed to mitigate the chromatic dispersion (CD)-induced power fading, the VSB MDB PAM4 signal suffers less image interference resulting from VSB filtering and direct detection (DD), thanks to its lower components at the carrier frequency. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed, in which the performances of the conventional VSB PAM4 signal, the VSB Nyquist PAM4 signal, and the VSB MDB PAM4 signal are investigated and compared comprehensively. The experimental results show that only the VSB MDB PAM4 signal can reach the bit error ratio (BER) below the 20% soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2.4 x 10(-2) at the 56-Gb/s rate after the 80-km SMF transmission, due to the mitigated image interference.
Zero-guard Band Dual-Ssb PAM4 Signal Transmission with Joint Equalization Scheme

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a joint equalization scheme to recover a zero-guard band dual-single sideband (dual-SSB) four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) signal in a system with moderate bandwidth limitation. In the joint equalization scheme, a multiple-input multiple-output feedforward equalizer (MIMO-FFE) is first used to mitigate the residual crosstalk resulting from non-ideal optical filtering. Then, a modified post filter (PF) is placed after the MIMO-FFE to suppress the MIMO-FFE-enhanced low-frequency noise, whereas the known inter-symbol interference introduced by the modified PF is further eliminated with the maximum likelihood sequence estimation algorithm. Based on the proposed scheme, we experimentally demonstrate a 112-Gb/s zero-guard band dual-SSB PAM4 signal transmission over an 80-km single mode fiber with the averaged bit error ratio of two sidebands below 3.8×10-3. We also achieve, to the best of our knowledge, a record electrical spectral efficiency of 7.1 b/s/Hz for single polarization direct detection systems using a dual-SSB PAM4 or dual-SSB 16-quadrature amplitude modulation format.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate beyond 100G single sideband (SSB) 4-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) signal generation with a silicon dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DD-MZM) operating at C-band. With Kramers-Kronig detection, a 128-Gb/s PAM-4 signal is transmitted over 80-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) with a bit error rate (BER) below the 7% hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3). In comparison, a 168-Gb/s PAM-4 signal is transmitted over 80-km SSMF with a BER below the 20% HD-FEC threshold of 1.5 x 10(-2). A two-tap digital post filter and maximum likelihood sequence detection are applied to compensate for the limited system bandwidth. To the best of our knowledge, this letter reports the highest single-lane bitrate of 80-km SSB transmission with a DD-MZM and direct detection. It provides an attractive low-cost solution for inter-datacenter interconnection and metro-haul transmission.

Abstract:We present the design and optimization of the optical single side-band (SSB) Nyquist four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) transmission using dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM)modulation and direct detection (DD), aiming at the C-band cost-effective, high-speed and long-distance transmission. At the transmitter, the laser line width should be small to avoid the phase noise to amplitude noise conversion and equalization-enhanced phase noise due to the large chromatic dispersion (CD). The optical SSB signal is generated after optimizing the optical modulation index (OMI) and hence the minimum phase condition which is required by the Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver can also be satisfied. At the receiver, a simple AC-coupled photodiode (PD) is used and a virtual carrier is added for the KK operation to alleviate the signal-to-signal beating interference (SSBI).A Volterra filter (VF) is cascaded for remaining nonlinearities mitigation. When the fiber nonlinearity becomes significant, we elect to use an optical band-pass filter with offset filtering. It can suppress the simulated Brillouin scattering and the conjugated distortion by filtering out the imaging frequency components. With our design and optimization, we achieve single-channel, single polarization 102.4-Gb/s Nyquist PAM-4 over 800-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF).

Abstract:By an orchestra of multiple enabling techniques at the transmitter and receiver, we experimentally demonstrate a single-channel 102.4-Gb/s transmission up to 240-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) at C-band with direct detection. At the transmitter, we realize Nyquist-pulse shaping PAM-4 (NPAM-4) modulation and single-sideband modulation by using a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator. At the receiver, we use FFE and high-order terms of Volterra filter, Hilbert superposition cancellation, to mitigate the linear and nonlinear interference. The fiber dispersion can be compensated at either the transmitter or receiver.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonic generation scheme for multiband ultrawideband (MB-UWB) signal by employing a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM). In this scheme, four electrical binary pulse streams with different bit rates are combined to drive one radio frequency (RF) port of the DDMZM, while the other RF port is modulated by the sum of their 1-b delayed duplicates. By properly adjusting the bit rate and the amplitude of each pulse stream, as well as the bias voltage of the DDMZM, an MB-UWB signal with four sub-bands can be obtained and the transmission capacity can be quadrupled. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is verified by a system demonstration, where the signal modulated by amplitude-phase-shift-key format reaches a high bit rate of 2 Gb/s.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate C-band 2 x 56 Gb/s pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM)-4 signal transmission over 100 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) using 18 GHz direct-modulated lasers (DMLs) and direct detection, without inline optical amplifier. A delay interferometer (DI) at the transmitter side is used to extend the transmission reach from 40 to 100 km. A digital Volterra filter at the receiver side is used to mitigate the nonlinear distortions. We obtain an average bit error ratio (BER) of 1.5 x 10(-3) for 2 x 56 Gb/s PAM-4 signal after 100 km SSMF transmission at the optimal input power, which is below the 7% forward error correction (FEC) threshold (3.8 x 10(-3)). Abstract:Direct detection (DD) is one of the most attractive solutions for short and medium reach optical fiber transmission in comprehensive consideration of digital signal processing (DSP), power consumption, and cost. Various single side band (SSB) DD techniques have been widely investigated to detect and process the complex signal. In this paper, we propose a novel approach which uses only high-speed digital input/outputs (IO) to generate both quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal and virtual carrier signal. A transmission of 4 × 32 Gb/s QPSK signal over 1200-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) in block-wise manner has been successfully demonstrated. Only a single polarization in-phase-and-quadrature (IQ) modulator and one single photodiode (PD) are used for each channel. Compared with conventional DSP of coherent detection, the DSP in the proposed scheme is also simplified that only fixed frequency compensation is required without additional phase noise elimination. The overall system complexity has been greatly reduced.

Abstract:In this experiment, we generate PAM4 signals based on a dual-polarization Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-MZM) without DAC. Two high-speed binary OOK signals with different driving voltages are used to modulate a DP-MZM. After modulation, the intensity of the optical OOK signal in a polarization state is 0.7 times of the other. In this way, up to 200-Gbit/s PAM4 signals can be successfully generated. We also measure the BER performance of the generated PAM4 signals after 1-km dispersion shifting fiber (DSF) transmission. Based on the experimental results, the generated 160-Gbit/s PAM4 signal can be successfully transmitted over 1-km DSF, satisfying the hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10 -3 . Moreover, the system can support up to 200-Gbit/s PAM4 signal transmission over 1-km DSF when satisfying the soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2 × 10 -2 .

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate the intensity modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) 112-Gb/s single carrier pulse amplitude modulation (PAM)-4 transmission system over 80-km standard signal-mode fiber (SSMF) without any optical chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation at the 3.8×10−3 BER threshold for 7% the hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC). The training based pre-equalization (pre-EQ) and the nonlinear look-up-table (LUT) based pre-distortion (pre-DT) in the transmitter (Tx)-side are employed to reduce the computation complexity and deal with the modulation bandwidth and the nonlinearity impairments of electro-optical modulators and detectors. On the other hand, the system without optical CD compensation modules is obviously more simple and flexible. Therefore, the nonlinear LUT pre-DT simultaneously used for CD compensation will further simplify the system. The BER is about 20% without any digital signal processing (DSP) such as equalization, pre-distortion, pre-equalization or compensation. After signal recovery, the BERs of BTB and 80-km SSMF system can achieve 3.07×10−5 and 1.50×10−3 respectively. The principle of the LUT based pre-DT and the pre-EQ are introduced in the paper.

Abstract:In this work, we experimentally demonstrated a 112 Gbit/s polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) transmission over 80-km single mode fiber (SMF) using digital coherent detection without optical amplifier and CD compensation for the short reach applications. Here, a signal-phase aided least-mean-square (SP-LMS) equalization algorithm is proposed to avoid the effects of carrier frequency offset and phase noise. Without additional carrier recovery algorithms, the PDM-PAM4 system shows good transmission performance. The received optical power (ROP) penalty is only about 0.2 dB after 80 km transmission comparing to back-to-back (BTB) transmission. A receiver sensitivity of -20dBm (at 7% FEC limit) can be reached after 80-km transmission.

Abstract:In this work, 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) by using commercial dual-drive Mach-Zehnder Modulator (DD-MZM) is experimentally investigated. We have demonstrated the generation of PAM4 signal up to 50 Gbaud (100 Gbps). The transmission of the PAM4 signal over 5-Km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) is achieved with error-free below the FEC limit (3.8E-3), without employing digital equalization at 90 Gbps. The linear-amplifier-free configuration by DD-MZM leads to simplified implementation and improved performance for high speed PAM4 signal generation, which would be of great significance for short reach optical interconnection.
