Abstract:A stable pulsed all-fiber laser based on the hybrid graphene microfiber knot resonator device is proposed and demonstrated. Unlike previous pulse generation mechanisms, the operation utilizes saturable absorption as well as the nonlinear-polarization-rotation effect introduced by the polarization-dependent feature of the device to enhance intracavity power for boosting multiple pulsation regimes. 15.5 MHz conventional soliton mode-locking pulse, 140 MHz 9-order-harmonic mode-locking pulse, 27.4 to 48.6 GHz high-repetition-rate dissipative fourwave-mixing pulse, and 50 kHz stable Q-switched pulse were achieved experimentally based on one device. The easily fabricated versatile device acts as a polarizer, comb filter, and nonlinear component simultaneously, thereby introducing a novel application of microfiber resonator devices in ultrafast and nonlinear photonics.

Abstract:The authors demonstrate a 1.5μm wavelength microfiber laser formed by tightening a doped microfiber into a knot in air. The 2-mm-diameter knot, assembled using a 3.8-μm-diameter microfiber that is directly drawn from Er:Yb-doped phosphate glass, serves as both active medium and resonating cavity for lasing. Single-longitudinal-mode laser with threshold of about 5mW and output power higher than 8μW is obtained. Their initial results suggest a simple approach to highly compact lasers based on doped microscale optical fibers.

Abstract:This paper proposes a mode-locked fiber laser based on graphene-coated microfiber. The total length of the fiber laser resonant cavity is 31.34 m. Under the condition of stable output of bright-dark soliton pairs from the fiber laser, dual-wavelength tuning is realized by adjusting the polarization controller (PC), and the wavelength tuning range is 11 nm. Furthermore, the effects of polarization states on bright-dark solitons are studied. It is demonstrated that the mode-locking state can be switched between conventional solitons and bright-dark solitons in the graphene mode-locked fiber laser. Bright-dark soliton pairs with different shapes and nanosecond pulse width can be obtained by adjusting the PC and pump power.

Abstract:We report an ultrafast laser mode-locked with a graphene saturable absorber. The linear dispersions of the Dirac electrons in graphene enable wideband tunability. We get ∼1 ps pulses, tunable between 1525 and 1559 nm, with stable mode-locking, insensitive to environmental perturbations.

Abstract:Atomic layer graphene possesses wavelength-insensitive ultrafast saturable absorption, which can be exploited as a “full-band” mode locker. Taking advantage of the wide band saturable absorption of the graphene, we demonstrate experimentally that wide range (1570–1600 nm) continuous wavelength tunable dissipative solitons could be formed in an erbium doped fiber laser mode locked with few layer graphene.

Abstract:A stable mode-locked fiber laser employing graphene as a saturable absorber is presented. One monolayer graphene can obtain mode-locking when the cavity is around 12m, but when the cavity decreases to 6m, no stable pulses can be formed. In order to solve this problem, cascade of two monolayer graphenes is used and stable mode locked pulses with a frequency of 44.53MHz, a bandwidth of 2.4nm, a pulse width of 43.89ps and an average power of 19.10mW have been directly obtained from the laser. Our results show the atomic-layer graphene may be a promising satrurable absorber for stable pulses formation of fiber laser.

Abstract:An all-normal dispersion tunable mode-locked fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror is experimentally investigated. The laser employs an all-polarization-maintaining figure-8 cavity consisted of main loop and nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. At 1030 nm, the stable mode-locked laser is initiated by adjusting two loops' pump power, which delivers pulse width of 17.61 ps, repetition frequency of 4.133 MHz, and average power of 2.151 mW. A tunable filter is employed in the cavity to select the laser wavelength as well as force the laser operating in all-normal dispersion dissipative regime. The wavelength tuning range is 1015-1080 nm while the pulse duration ranges from 7.86 ps to 17.80 ps.

Abstract:Due to its unique electronic property and the Pauli Blocking Principle, atomic layer graphene possesses wavelength-independent ultrafast saturable absorption, which can be exploited for the ultrafast photonics application. Through chemical functionalization, a graphene-polymer nanocomposite membrane was fabricated and firstly used to mode lock a fiber laser. Stable mode locked solitons with 3 nJ pulse energy, 700 fs pulse width at the 1590 nm wavelength have been directly generated from the laser. We show that graphene-polymer nanocomposites could be an attractive saturable absorber for high power fiber laser mode locking.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate a fiber laser based on graphene which is suspended in the air. Though the damage threshold of graphene is high, it's easy to be damaged when graphene is suspended in the air. And it will form a microvoid in the middle of the graphene which acts as a saturable absorber. A stable and polarization insensitivity mode-locked fiber laser can be realized based on this graphene.

Abstract:We report an all-fiber graphene-based gate tunable saturable absorber, optical nonlinearity enhancer, dynamic dispersion controller and electrical feedback accepter. This is used to mode-lock fiber lasers, enabling tunable repetition rate from 20 MHz to 348 GHz, with minimized super-mode noise <-50 dB and timing jitter < 6.62 x 10(-17) s.

Abstract:A novel multi-wavelength mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber laser with tungsten disulfide (WS2) combined with a microfiber knot is described. This hybrid fiber structure facilitates strong light matter interaction between the saturated absorption of the WS2 material and high optical non-linearity of the microfiber knot. It is demonstrated experimentally that the novel fiber laser works stably in the absence of an external comb filter, with the generation of stable multi-wavelength picosecond pulses. In the multi-wavelength lasing regime, up to seven-wavelength stable mode-locked pulses are obtained using a polarization controller with the pump power at 250 mW. The pulse period and the pulsewidth are 188.7 ns and 16.3 ps, respectively. In addition, the number of multi-wavelength lasing channels can be changed by simply adjusting the microfiber knot size. Experimental results show the laser to have a stable output over 12-h recording period. The results of this investigation demonstrate that the optical microfiber knot with a WS2 overlay based fiber laser device can operate as a highly nonlinear optical component and a saturable absorber. The proposed multi-wavelength lasing device can therefore be widely used for non-linear and ultrafast photonics and has a number of advantages compared to similar devices using more conventional technologies, including low cost and good stability.

Abstract:We demonstrate a state variable fiber pulse laser based on a graphene-integrated microfiber device. A 3-D microfiber coil integrated with graphene acts as a polarization-sensitive saturable absorber. By adjusting the polarization controllers, stable Q-switched pulses and mode-locked rectangular pulses are observed. To our knowledge, this is the first study conducted to achieve switching between rectangular pulses and Q-switched pulses while keeping the pump power constant. The rectangular pulses have a pulsewidth and repetition rate of ~10 ns and ~940 kHz, respectively, and the Q-switched pulses have a pulsewidth and repetition rate of ~40 μs and ~4.8 kHz, respectively.

Abstract:We demonstrate a hybrid structure laser consisting of a single or multiple zinc oxide (ZnO)nanowires attached to a silica microfiber knot cavity, which is pumped by 355 nm wavelength laser pulses. The laser threshold is lower than 0.2 μ J / pulse . The measured linewidth of the lasing mode is about 0.04 nm. The hybrid structure combines advantages of high gain of semiconductornanowires and high quality factor of microfiber knot cavities. Additionally, the design offers convenient and efficient approach to both pumping and collection of the semiconductornanowire lasers.

Abstract:Passive harmonic mode-locking (HML) in a fiber laser with a microfiber-based graphene saturable absorber (SA) is presented. The microfiber-based graphene SA is employed to enhance the nonlinear effect of the laser cavity, which is beneficial to achieving high-order HML operation. Depending on the pump power level, up to 101st HML (555 MHz) was obtained. The results demonstrate that the microfiber-based graphene SA could be used as highly nonlinear photonic devices in fiber lasers for effectively realizing high-order passive HML operation.
