Abstract:Since Kuhn in 1956 first proposed intramolecular cross-linking of isolated single-polymer chains in dilute solutions, the method has been extensively employed to achieve single-chain colloids and tadpole colloids (Janus ones) from homopolymers and copolymers, respectively. After understanding that the conventional fabrication methods were based only on short-ranged protections, it has become an urgent requirement to develop new conceptual general methods toward the intramolecular cross-linking in concentrated solutions to determine the improvement of stability. Thus we immediately proposed that if long-ranged, electrostatic-mediated intramolecular cross-linking of polymers could be achieved in concentrated solutions, it would benefit the establishment of more stable supermicelle aggregates. We thought it wise to employ previously developed electrostatic repulsion technique via modificationwith monovalence agents and performed sequential cross-linking with multiple-valence agents. For the fabrication of polyvinylpyridine-contained polymers, iodoethane and 1,5-diiodopentane were used as a modification agent and a cross-linker. For the polyacrylic-acid-contained polymers, 1-methylimidazole and 1,6-hexanediisothiocyanate were used for the intramolecular cross-linking. Polyisoprenecontained polymers were chosen because they were cheap. After click reaction with mercaptoacetic acid, the fabricated polymers resembled polyacrylic-acidcontained polymers. Intramolecular cross-linking of polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine)-block-poly (ethylene oxide) (PS-b-P4VP-b-PEO) was achieved at 300 mg/mL. We found that the composition and performance of the colloidal domains were broadly tunable by favorable growth of functional materials, unveiling new perspectives for deriving a huge family of functional composite Janus colloidal single chains.

Abstract:Polymerization of multifunctional monomers could produce polymers with different functionalities and novel macromolecular architectures. However, the ability to control the homopolymerization of multivinyl monomers (MVMs) has always been a challenge. Here we demonstrate that the homopolymerization of acrylate based MVMs can be kinetically controlled via Cu-0-mediated controlled/living radical polymerization in the presence of additional Cu-II, which enables the efficient promotion of intrarnolecular cydization and suppression of intermolecular cross-linking. The gelation is effectively delayed over ca. 40% monomer conversion in the concentrated polymerization system ([M] = 40.9 wt %), which is far higher than the Flory-Stockmayer theory predicts. Moreover, closer inspection of the synthesized polymers reveals that single-chain cyclized/knotted polymeric nanoparticles (SCKNPs) are formed due to the nature of one-pot in situ intramolecular reaction and self-cyclization of the propagating polymer chains. This facile, method opens a new avenue to the design and synthesis of a broad range of novel single-chain cyclized/knotted polymeric materials.

Abstract:While the metallocene polymers were comprehensively studied, other metallopolymers are rarely explored. The major challenge is the lack of a synthetic platform for the preparation of metal coordinated derivatives, monomers, and polymers. Therefore, the development of a facile synthesis of new metal coordinated monomers and polymers is critically needed. A novel successfully synthesized methacrylate-containing nickel complex is reported in this communication. Controlled RAFT polymerizations are further carried out to prepare a series of side-chain nickel containing polymers with different molecular weight and narrow Polydispersity Index (PDI). This new metallopolymer performs specific electrochemical and excellent thermal properties. This study provides a novel and convenient strategy to prepare metallopolymer with controllable molecular weight, which has potential applications in assembled, catalytic and magnetic materials.

Abstract:A novel strategy to synthesize hybrid metal–polymer nanocomposites has been achieved based on in situ free radical suspension and bulk polymerization techniques. An organometallic precursor complex is dissolved in a liquid monomer phase prior to polymerization, where upon the precursor molecules are immobilized inside the polymer matrix during its formation. In a separate step, metal nanoparticles are then formed by H2-assisted reduction of the precursor in the polymer product in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). The synthesized nanocomposites were characterized by GPC, TGA, SEM and TEM. It is shown that the metal nanoparticles are uniformly distributed inside the polymer matrix and the inclusion of the metal precursor has no significant influence on the polymerization process. The current work represents a simple and universal way to prepare a variety of metal–polymer nanocomposite functional materials.

Abstract:We report a conceptually new method for the synthesis of Prussian blue (PB) nanoshells with tunable size using miniemulsion periphery polymerization (MEPP). The process of MEPP involves the preparation of miniemulsion droplets using organometallic surfactants, followed by a coordination polymerization at the periphery of the droplets. The organometallic polymers with nanoshell structure were confirmed by using FT-IR, UV-vis, TEM, SEM, and AFM. WAXD measurements indicated that the shell structure suppressed the crystallization of the polymers. We also discovered that the nanoshell structure can significantly enhance the thermal stability of the materials. The hollow structures plus inherent magnetic properties of PB render the materials potential useful as multifunctional capsules.

Abstract:Metal-ligand (M-L) coordination crosslinked elastomers have shown potential in multiple fields. However, innovative molecular designs and profound characterizations into the short-range structure remain a challenge. Here, we report an asymmetric M-L coordination strategy as a new design for polymers. Through a one-pot multi-component polymerization, a primary thio-beta-diketone was introduced into the polymer chain, based on which a series of metal-coordination crosslinked elastomers were prepared. Compared with the symmetric ligand, the primary thio-beta-diketone showed higher binding ability and dynamics, resulting in higher mechanical strength and lower hysteresis. Isothermal titration calorimetry, single-molecule force spectroscopy and rheology measurements were applied to prove the consistency between different scales for the coordinating elastomers. Benefitting from the simple and unique coordinating system, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) was exploited to survey the change of coordinating structures during stretching, observing the extension, distortion and breaking of coordination bonds directly. This strategy can pave the way for new designs of metal-ligand interactions in material science.

Abstract:Nanoparticles that self-assemble on a liquid-liquid interface serve as the building block for making heterodimeric nanostructures. Specifically, hollow iron oxide nanoparticles within hexane form colloidosomes in the aqueous solution of silver nitrate, and iron oxide exposed to the aqueous phase catalyzes the reduction of silver ions to afford a heterodimer of silver and hollow iron oxide nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, and SQUID were used to characterize the heterodimers. Interestingly, the formation of silver nanoparticles helps the removal of spinglass layer on the hollow iron oxide nanoparticles. This work demonstrates a powerful yet convenient strategy for producing sophisticated, multifunctional nanostructures.

Abstract:Single-chain nanoparticles represent an emerging class of nanomaterials designed to mimic protein's folding paradigm. Intrachain covalent crosslinking toward the formation of single-chain nanoparticles encounters complex energy landscapes, leading to the potential occurrence of misfolding issues. While non-covalent crosslinking can circumvent this issue, the resulting single-chain nanoparticles exhibit lower structural stability compared to their covalently crosslinked counterparts. In this study, we present a novel approach for the synthesis of single-chain nanoparticles, achieved through the combination of non-covalent and covalent intramolecular crosslinking. Cyanostilbenes grafted onto the linear polymer form intrachain non-covalent stacks aided by hydrogen bonds, leading to the formation of non-covalently crosslinked single-chain nanoparticles. These nanoparticles undergo conversion to covalently crosslinked nanostructures through subsequent photo-irradiation using [2 + 2] photocycloaddition, a process facilitated by the supramolecular confinement effect. Consequently, the resulting single-chain nanoparticles demonstrate both intrachain folding efficiency and substantial stability, offering significant potential for advancing applications across diverse fields.

Abstract:The construction of supramolecular polymer networks (SPNs) with high robustness remains a significant challenge in materials science. Achieving this goal typically requires a substantial usage of supramolecular linkers, which can limit their practical applications. Recently, Shijun Li, Peter Stang, Feihe Huang, Jianying Huang and coworkers have pioneered a method to address this limitation. They have successfully developed robust SPNs utilizing only a minute quantity of metallacycles (0.28 mol%) as supramolecular crosslinkers. This innovative approach not only enhances the mechanical properties of the SPNs but also enables excellent stimuli-responsiveness, thereby broadening their potential applications.

Abstract:The recent progress in platinum(II) coordination-driven supramolecular polymers has had a substantial effect on the design of functional soft materials. However, the prospect of realizing polymerization induced by platinum(II) metallacycle-based host-guest interactions has received little attention until recently. Here we report the realization of supramolecular polymerization driven by platinum(II) metallacycle-based host-guest interactions both in the solid state and in solution. On the basis of the disclosed polymerization mechanism, we present a new strategy for the preparation of platinum(II) metallacycle-based supramolecular polymers.

Abstract:Single-chain Janus nanoparticle of the example polymer polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine)-block-polyethylene oxide (PS-b-P2VP-b-PEO) was achieved by intramolecular crosslinking via complexation of P2VP with cobalt octacarbonyl, while the metallic complex was incorporated within the crosslinked core. It is crucial to introduce electrostatic interaction along the chain by pretreatment and thus ensure the intramolecular crosslinking in concentrated solutions, for example, 30 mg/mL. After thermolysis in the dispersion, the complex is decomposed achieving cobalt within the P2VP core. A magnetic responsive single-chain Janus composite nanoparticle was derived with the P2VP/Co core conjugated with PS and PEO single chains onto the opposite sides. The Janus composite nanoparticle displays highly catalytic activity and magnetic responsive performance from the metallic cobalt and interfacial activity from the PS and PEO single chains. A highly efficient catalytic reduction of nitroaromatic compounds at emulsion interfaces was demonstrated thereby, which was easily recycled with a magnet.

Abstract:Three monomers, namely A2, B2, and GH, were designed and synthesized. By utilizing double host-guest interactions, the monomers A2+B2+GH underwent self-assembly to form a supramolecular linear polymer (SLP) at high concentrations. Long fibers could be pulled from the concentrated SLP solution. Upon the addition of PdCl2(PhCN)2 into the SLP solution, a structural transformation occurred from SLP to a supramolecular crosslinked polymer (SCP) through metal coordination interaction. This transformation induced fluorescence quenching, test paper strips for ion detection experiment confirmed that the SLP had good detection ability for Pd2+. Furthermore, the SCP underwent a transformation into a gel when the concentration exceeded 145 mmol/L. The SCP gel demonstrated sensitivity to different stimuli, such as K+ ions and changes in temperature, accompanied by a reversible transition between sol and gel states. Additionally, rheological analyses indicated that the gel possessed favorable self-healing properties.

Abstract:We reported a facile method for the preparation of POM-polymer hybrids in one-pot via polymerization-induced self-assembly. Polyoxometalate macroanions were complexed with cations to prepare cross-linking agents. RAFT dispersion polymerization was conducted in the presence of the cross-linking agent. The hybrid nanoparticles can be used as nanoreactors for the photocatalytic synthesis of Au nanoparticles.

Abstract:Manipulating particles using a fluid interface has both fundamental implications and technological promises. However, the stabilization of interfacial particle structures remains challenging. This study proposes a room‐temperature particle cross‐linking strategy achieved by introducing a surface transition process to metal particles confined at a liquid metal–electrolyte template, which is electrochemically reducing. The method enables cross‐linking Cu nanoparticles into nanoporous networks of micrometric thickness. It is shown that the particle networks possess remarkable mechanical strength and can be readily isolated and then be transferred onto desired substrates. The electrical properties of the material due to network formation are further highlighted, with a focus on an anomalous electric‐field‐induced resistance reduction effect. Such favorable mechanical property and intriguing conducting behavior forecast promising perspectives of the material for smart sensor applications or novel electronic devices. Meanwhile, the proposed particle cross‐linking method can provide general implications for particle‐based, interface‐assisted fabrication. A liquid‐metal‐enabled electrochemical welding phenomenon is discovered for room‐temperature, in‐solution cross‐linking of metal particles. Cu nanoparticles are “welded” together to form continuous, thin, porous, and conductive networks through interfacial electrochemical processes. The obtained materials reveal strong mechanical strength and anomalous electric‐field‐induced resistance drop as a result of network formation.
