Abstract:Limiting mercury emission is imperative to clean production of coal-fired power plants. This work proposes a one-pot catalysis approach to in-situ reclaim scrap Styrofoam into Fe-embedded hyper-cross-linked polymers (HCP-Fe) for gaseous Hg degrees decontamination. Such approach renders demercurizer synthesis more environmentbenign and cost-efficient than existing methods. The resulting HCP-Fe samples exhibit conspicuous pore features (BET surface areas: 423.71 similar to 1158.40 m(2)/g), remarkable demercuration performance at wide-range temperatures (60 similar to 180 degrees C), and desirable adaptability to both humid and acid flue gas settings, thereby, surpassing their Fe-cleaned counterparts and current state-of-the-art materials. Experimental and theoretical investigations indicate in-situ FeCl3 embedding endows Styrofoam-based HCPs with homodisperse Hg degrees-affinitive sites in porous framework, thus facilitating the effective Hg degrees trapping under various flue gas conditions; while inherent interconnected channels inside HCP-Fe further expedite the mass transfer for Hg degrees catalytic oxidation. Our attempt manifests a potential guideline to recycling waste plastics into value-enhancing materials for environmental remediation.
