Abstract:We report a facile synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by using a new reducing agent, pretreated N-methyl-pyrrolidone (NMP*). The resulting AgNPs are characterized by using UV-vis, TEM, and X-ray spectroscopy. These AgNPs exhibit strong surface enhanced Raman scattering response on addition of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid. A possible redox mechanism involving silver ion and NMP* was proposed. The oxidized species resulting from thermally treated NMP/O-2 were analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance and gas chromatography techniques, and it was determined that 5-hydroxy-N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone played the role of reducing agent. The facile synthesis of functional metal nanoparticles via an environmentally friendly procedure with control in particle size, and understanding of the reaction mechanisms pave the ways to further developing metal nanoparticles for chemical and biological detections.
Influence of the Photoluminescence Property of Carbon Nanodots on the Reduction of Silver Ions

Abstract:Carbon nanodots have been demonstrated to be an effective reducing agent in fabricating silver nanoparticles. In this study, the dependence of reduction efficiency of the CDs on the irradiation wavelength and their photoluminescence property is investigated. We find that the CDs excited by short wavelength light shows much higher photoreducibility than those excited by longer wavelength irradiation, although their PL intensity might be about the same. By analyzing the PL and the time-resolved PL property of the formed CDs-Ag NPs composites we find that, when the CDs are excited, there are two kinds of recombination path ways of the carriers contributing to their photoluminescence: the direct excitation of surface states, and the excited electrons from carbonic-core transferred to the surface states; only the electrons originates from the intrinsic carbonic-core excited by short wavelength can reduce the Ag ions, while those originates from the direct excitation of the surface states by long wavelength light are ineffective. The proposed reduction kinetics of Ag ions is significant to understand the photoreduction property of the CDs.
Reduction of Ionic Silver by Sulfur Dioxide as a Source of Silver Nanoparticles in the Environment

Abstract:The natural formation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) via biotic and abiotic pathways in water and soil media contributes to the biogeochemical cycle of silver metal in the environment. However, the formation of AgNPs in the atmosphere has not been reported. Here, we describe a previously unreported source of AgNPs via the reduction of Ag(I) by SO2 in the atmosphere, especially in moist environments, using multipronged advanced analytical and surface techniques. The rapid reduction of Ag(I) in the atmospheric aqueous phase was mainly caused by the sulfite ions formed from the dissolution of SO2 in water, which contributed to the formation of AgNPs and was consistent with the Finke–Watzky model with a major contribution of the reduction–nucleation process. Sunlight irradiation excited SO2 to form triplet SO2, which reacted with water to form H2SO3 and greatly enhanced Ag(I) reduction and AgNP formation. Different pH values affected the speciation of Ag(I) and S(IV), which were jointly involved in the reduction of Ag(I). The formation of AgNPs was also observed in the atmospheric gas phase via direct reduction of Ag(I) by SO2(gas), which occurred even in 50 ppbv SO2(gas). Abstract:The reduction of metal ions by biomasses (BMs) and biochars (BCs) is often neglected when evaluating the environmental behavior and risk of heavy metals. In this study, the formation mechanisms of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) when Ag+ coexists with BMs/BCs were investigated. Four types of BMs (pine sawdust, bagasse, lignin, and cellulose) as well as their BCs were investigated for their roles in transforming Ag+ to AgNPs. The electron donating capacity (EDC) of all the BMs/BCs was larger than zero. The UV–Vis spectrometer and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDX) analysis confirmed the formation of AgNPs. The quantities of AgNPs formed by BM systems were higher than that by their corresponding BCs. The quantities of formed AgNPs by bagasse and its BCs were the highest when compared with other BMs/BCs, which may be due to their highest EDC values. We found that hydroxyl group (-OH) was the important redox-active functional group in BMs and BCs that contributed to Ag+ reduction according to the results from X-ray photoelectron spectrometric (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (FTIR) analyses. AgNPs formation was enhanced at elevated pH, probably because of the deprotonated functional groups with high EDC values and electron density. The higher temperature could enhance the formation of AgNPs, suggesting that the reduction of Ag+ by BMs/BC was a thermodynamically favored process. This study illustrated that Ag+ was transformed to AgNPs by BMs and BCs through the redox reactive -OH of BMs/BCs, which further improved our understanding on the formation of AgNPs in the environment.

Abstract:Photoinduced reduction of silver ion (Ag(+)) to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a crucial role in the transformation and transport of engineered AgNPs and Ag(+) in aquatic environments. DOM is a mixture of natural polymers with wide molecular weight (MW) distribution, and the roles of specific components of DOM in the photoreduction of Ag(+) to AgNPs are still not understood. In this study, MW fractionated natural organic matter (Mf-NOM) were investigated for their roles on the photoreduction process and stabilization of the formed AgNPs. This photoinduced reduction process depends highly on pH, concentration of Ag(+) and NOM, light quality, and the MW of Mf-NOM. Monochromatic radiation and light attenuation correction suggested that the difference of Mf-NOM on reduction was mainly ascribed to the differential light attenuation of Mf-NOM rather than the "real" reductive ability. More importantly, compared with low MW fractions, the high MW Mf-NOMs exhibit drastically higher capability in stabilizing the photosynthesized AgNPs against Ca(2+)-induced aggregation. This finding is important for a better understanding of the differential roles of Mf-NOM in the transformation and transport of Ag(+) and engineered AgNPs in DOM-rich surface water.

Abstract:Under ambient light illumination, silver nanoparticles can be synthesized by a triblock copolymer induced reduction of [Ag(NH3)(2)](+) ions in ethanol. Conventional chemical reducing agents, thermal treatment, and radiation sources are no longer necessary in this novel approach. A possible mechanism was proposed to explain the formation and stabilization of silver nanoparticles based on UV-vis absorption spectra and transmission electron microscopy results. This novel ambient light route has been successfully applied to deposit silver nanoclusters on TiO2. Silver nanoclusters of about 2 nm in size were found to strongly anchor to the TiO2 nanoparticles with high dispersion. The resulting silver-coated TiO2 material with optimal silver loading showed enhanced photocatalytic and bactericidal activities compared to the uncoated TiO2. The reasons for the enhancements of the activities were discussed.

Abstract:Sunlight-induced photoformation of silver nanoparticles (nAg), mediated by natural organic matter (NOM), is significantly affected by the concentration of Ag(I) and chloride. The initial photoformation rates of nAg in Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA) and Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM) solutions were examined under simulated sunlight irradiation. A critical induction concentration (CIC) of Ag(I) (10 mg/L for SRHA and 5 mg/L for SRNOM, respectively) was observed, below which the nAg formation was minimal. The threshold is attributed to the interplay of reduction and oxidation reactions mediated by NOM, reflecting the need to achieve sufficiently fast growth of silver clusters to outcompete oxidative dissolution. The CIC can be reduced by scavenging oxidative radicals or be increased by promoting singlet oxygen and hydrogen peroxide generation. The presence of chloride effectively reduced the CIC by forming AgCl, which facilitates reduction reactions and provides deposition surfaces. SRNOM is more efficient in mediating photoformation of nAg than SRHA, owing to their differed phototransient generation. These results highlight prerequisites for the photoformation of nAg mediated by NOM, in which the photochemistry and solution chemistry are both important.

Abstract:Microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) widely exist in natural environments and affect the migration and transformation of pollutants in aquatic environments. Previous works report that EPS have some reducing functional groups and can reduce heavy metals. However, because of the weak reducing capability of EPS, the reduction of heavy metals by EPS without cells is extremely slow, and its effect on heavy metals species is insignificant. In this work, the accelerated reduction of silver ions (Ag+) by EPS from Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 under illumination was investigated. UV–visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) coupled with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to confirm the formation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) via the reduction of Ag+ by EPS under light illumination. The Ag+ reduction by EPS follows pseudo-first-order kinetics under both visible and UV light, and the light irradiation can significantly accelerate AgNPs formation. On the one hand, visible light can excite AgNPs for their surface plasma resonance (SPR) and accelerate the electrons from the EPS to adjacent Ag+. On the other hand, EPS molecules may be excited by UV light to produce strong reducing species, which enhance Ag+ reduction. Moreover, pH, dissolved oxygen were found to affect the formation of AgNPs by EPS. This work proves the reducing capability of EPS on the reduction of Ag+, and this process can be accelerated under light illumination, which may affect the speciation and transformation of heavy metals in natural waters.
Photocatalytic Reduction of Silver Ions on Ferric Oxides and Ferric Hydroxides

Abstract:Irradiation of an aerated aqueous suspension of silver nitrate and catalysts (ferric oxides and ferric hydroxides) with UV light (wavelength lambda >= 320 nm) led to the production of fine silver particles. On these catalysts, all the adsorption isotherms of silver ions fitted well to the Langmuir adsorption equation and the initial rate of Ag(I) reduction increased linearly with the increase in the initial amount of adsorbed Ag(I). The slope decreased according to the following order: alpha-Fe2O3 >alpha-FeOOH >gamma-Fe2O3 >gamma-FeOOH >delta-FeOOH. However, for the first three catalysts the reduction of Ag(I) only occurred when the amount of adsorbed Ag(I) reached about half the maximum coverage and also the reaction rate was nearly unaffected by N-2 purging. The reduction of Ag(I) on delta-FeOOH and TiO2 upon degassing with N-2 was significantly accelerated. This implies that O-2 competes with silver ions for adsorption sites and reducing species on the catalyst, which is dependent on the catalyst's properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that alpha-Fe2O3 and delta-FeOOH were well and poorly crystallized, respectively. This indicates that the high crystallinity of the hydroxides is beneficial to the separation of photogenerated charge carriers and thus to their redox reactions with target substrates on the surface.
Photocatalytic Redox on the Surface of Colloidal Silver Nanoparticles Revealed by Second Harmonic Generation and Two-Photon Luminescence

Abstract:The redox of silver on the surface of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) has received extensive attention because of its significant impact on the biological, physical and chemical properties of AgNPs and their applications. Here we demonstrate that the surface redox reaction of AgNPs in colloids may be investigated by the second harmonic generation (SHG) and two-photon luminescence (TPL) emission from the AgNPs. It was revealed that the oxidation of silver on the surface of AgNPs was accelerated upon femtosecond laser excitation, accompanied by a decrease in the SHG and TPL emissions from the AgNPs. The photon-induced reduction of oxidized silver on AgNPs and the formation of surface defects were also revealed by the changes in the SHG and TPL emissions. Size and morphology changes have not been detected by dynamic light scattering and TEM measurements. The changes in the UV-vis extinction spectra were also very weak compared with previous reports. However, the occurrence of redox reactions on the Ag surface upon femtosecond laser irradiation has been confirmed by multiple control experiments. This work demonstrates that SHG and TPL can sensitively probe the subtle structural change on the surface of AgNPs.

Abstract:Red emitting silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) have been synthesized by using carbon dots (CDs) as reductants and stabilizer at a high temperature of 80 degrees C in ethanol. The effects of reaction time, temperature, type of base, concentration of ammonia and the ratio of CDs to Ag+ on the properties of AgNCs were investigated. The oxygen related groups on the surface of the CDs play important roles in the reduction process of the AgNCs. The formation mechanism of the AgNCs is a balance between AgNCs growth and etching. Moreover, the protocol is expected to be applicable to other carbon dots, solvents, and noble metals.

Abstract:The size of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and loading amount of Ag NPs onto their substrate/carrier are two key factors for their efficient applications. Herein, we present a facile method for in situ synthesizing ultrafine and highly loaded Ag NPs on the surface of tannin-coated catechol-formaldehyde resin (TA-CFR) nanospheres. TA-CFR nanospheres act as green and highly efficient reducing agents for converting silver ions (Ag + ) into Ag NPs, and the size of resultant Ag NPs is only ∼ 7.5 nm, and the Ag NPs loading capacity of TA-CFR is as high as 61.5 wt%, both of which contribute to the very high specific surface area of Ag NPs. Consequently, the as-synthesized composites show high catalytic performance, and the catalytic rate for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol is almost 10 times higher than that of the control. Meanwhile, composites also possess high antibacterial activity, efficiently inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) . Furthermore, tannin coating (thickness: ∼ 15 nm) minimizes the aggregation of Ag NPs, and enhances the reusability and stability of resultant Ag NPs, because of their high surface charges (the zeta potential is up to −65.5 ± 1.9 mV) and strong coordination capability with Ag NPs. This work provides a new frontier to develop multifunctional nanomaterials focusing on the green catalyst synthesis and environmental-remedy applications.

Abstract:Abstract Reflective dark field microscopy is used to observe the decrease in the light scattered from Ag nanoparticles immobilised on differing solid substrates. The nanoparticles are exposed to solutions containing halide ions, both at open circuit and under potentiostatic control, leading to the loss of the nanomaterial. By coupling optical and electrochemical techniques the physical origin of this transformation is demonstrated to be the electrochemical dissolution of the metal nanoparticles driven by electron transfer to ultra-trace dissolved oxygen. The dissolution kinetics of the surface-supported metal nanoparticles is compared on four substrate materials (i.e., glass, indium titanium oxide, glassy carbon and platinum) with different electrical conductivity. The three conductive substrates catalyse the redox-driven dissolution of Ag nanoparticles with the electrons transferred from the nanoparticles, via the macroscopic electrode to the dioxygen electron acceptor.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been suitably synthesized by reduction of silver ion (Ag+) using carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as a reducing agent and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a stabilizing agent. The purpose of this study was to clarify the efficiency of reducing agent (CQDs) for the synthesis of AgNPs. The CQDs and AgNPs have been characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Additionally, X-ray diffraction spectrometer (XRD) and transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was also used to characterize CQDs. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements using Zetasier Nano ZS were also applied to size of CQDs and AgNPs. The results showed that the CQDs with particle size of 4.6 nm could be efficiently reduce silver ion at a sufficient ratio of CQDs/silver ion to be 100 mL/1mM. The average size of AgNPs was 41 nm. The results of DLS measurement showed that the Zeta potential of AgNPs was -18,8 mV. In addition, the duration of 60 min was needed to reduce silver ion completely at ambient. The as synthesized AgNPs may have a potential for antibacterial application and the other purposes as well.

Abstract:The precise control of the surface chemistry, assembly processing, and size of each component is crucial to the construction of integrated functional nanocomposites. This article develops a novel in situ auto-reduction route, by which well dispersed silver nanoparticles can be easily fabricated in ordered mesoporous carbon. The mesoporous carbon functionalized with carboxylate groups was used to anchor glycol to form a novel reducing species (COOCH2CH2OH), on which Ag(NH3)2NO3 could be reduced in situ. Highly dispersed and small-sized Ag nanoparticles were thus obtained. The well designed composite has large surface area (836 m2 g−1), highly open mesopores (∼4.2 nm), and stably confined but accessible Ag nanoparticles and, as a result, shows a high performance in the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP).

Abstract:The ability to understand and control the reaction mechanisms of iron (Fe) nanoparticles (NPs) has an important impact on their applications. In this paper, applying in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we studied the irradiation- and size-dependent redox kinetics in Fe. (1) In the irradiation effect, weaker (intensity: ∼102 A/cm2) and stronger (intensity: ∼103–104 A/cm2) electron beam irradiations may facilitate the oxidation and reduction of Fe NPs, respectively. (2) In the size effect, Fe with a smaller size is first oxidized into FeO, while a large-sized Fe is directly oxidized into Fe3O4. The critical size is estimated to be ∼2.5 nm. Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were prepared via in situ reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO3) using polymeric micelles as nanoreactors without any additional reductant. The micelles were constructed from the amphiphilic star-shaped copolymer composed of poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) segment, 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA or DMA) units and oligo(ethylene glycol)monomethyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA or OEG) units. The Ag NPs stabilized by those star-shaped copolymers were characterized using UV–vis spectrum, DLS, TEM and FTIR. It confirmed that PDMAEMA exhibited the reducing property unless pH was above 7. The Ag NPs were sphere-like with a diameter of 10–20 nm, which was independent of the architecture of the copolymer and AgNO3 concentration. Furthermore, the catalytic activity of these Ag NPs was investigated by monitoring the reduction of p-nitrophenol (4-NP) by NaBH4. The result showed that the Ag NPs formed by coordination reduction can be effectively applied in catalytic reaction.

Abstract:We reported a novel method to real-time monitor the redox behaviors of single Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) at a Au ultramicroelectrode between oxidizing and reducing pulse potentials using the nanocollision electrochemical method. At fast pulse potentials, the instantaneous anodic-cathodic current transients of a single AgNP were observed for the electrooxidation of AgNP, followed by the electroreduction of the newborn silver oxide (AgO) NP in alkaline media via switching of redox potentials; however, only anodic oxidation signals of individual AgNPs were observed in neutral solution. Through this study, we have revealed the substantial different dynamic nanocollision electrochemical behaviors of single AgNPs on the electrode surface in various media. Our study offers a new view for clearly clarifying in situ tracking of the electron-transfer process of single NPs by correlating electrochemical oxidation and reduction behaviors with the complementary information.

Abstract:The numerous applications of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) lead to their spread in aquatic systems and the release of silver ions (Ag + ), which brings potential risks to environment and human health. Owing to the different toxicity, the mutual transformations between AgNPs and Ag + has been a hot topic of research. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is ubiquitous on the earth and almost participates in all the reactions in the nature. The previous studies have reported the roles of DOM played in the transformation between AgNPs and Ag + . However, different experiment conditions commonly caused contradictory results, leading to the difficulty to predict the fate of AgNPs in specific reactions. Here we summarized mechanisms of DOM-mediated AgNPs oxidation and Ag + reduction, and analyzed the effects of environmental parameters. Moreover, the knowledge gaps, challenges, and new opportunities for research in this field are discussed. This review will promote the understanding of the fate and risk assessments of AgNPs in natural water systems.
