Abstract:Microstructure behavior of Hangzhou intact soft clay after principal stress rotation test was studied. Macroscopic mechanical tests were performed by using ZheJiang University Hollow Cylinder Apparatus (ZJU-HCA). To fully investigate the geometric variation of micro-porosity, SEM images of the samples were taken from three different planes, i.e., horizontal, radial and tangential plane. Pores (Particles) and Cracks Analysis System (PCAS) was used for analysis soil microstructure variation. The results show that in fixed principal stress direction tests with the increase of rotation angle, pores arrangement has best ordering at alpha=60 degrees in all three observed planes, which are close to the results of macroscopic tests about the compressibility. Also, the variation of pores arrangement is more obvious in radial plane, while the change range of pores morphology is greater in horizontal plane, and the change of pore scale mainly occurred in horizontal and radial plane. These differences of the changes of pore microstructure in different observed planes are consistent with the anisotropy behavior since when the coefficient of intermediate principal stress equal to 0.5, the soil does not have transverse isotropic along the direction of sedimentary. In pure principal stress rotation tests, the variations of pore size, orientation, and morphology mainly occur in radial and tangential plane, while no obvious changes are observed in horizontal plane. These microstructure characteristics demonstrate that significant variation happens in vertical plane rather than the horizontal plane which echoes the fact that the principal stress axis rotates in vertical plane. This study will be of great importance in understanding soil behavior in principal stress rotation test.
