Abstract:In this study, manganese dioxide (MnO2) was electrochemically synthesized on the surface of a lead anode using different current densities (100–300 A m−2) and deposition time (4–6 h). This work intends to highlight the consequences of various electrodeposition parameters via the electrochemical approach. The MnO2 electrowinning plant must consider the effect of electrodeposition parameters that can ensue on the overall impact of electrolytically derived MnO2 (EMD) powder on a larger scale. The micrographs of the obtained EMD powder revealed that spindle-like morphology was observed for the current density between 100 and 200 A m−2, whereas moss-like morphology was observed at a current density above 200 A m−2 with increased surface roughness. The deposition time has not shown a profound effect. This study highlights the EMD deposited at 200 A m−2 for 5 h when tested in 2 M NaOH electrolyte exhibits a storage performance of 98 F g−1. For broader adoption of this material, the asymmetric device comprising EMD versus activated carbon (EMD/AC) has been fabricated. The asymmetric supercapacitor is a key for storing energy, which delivered 36 F g−1 at energy and power densities of 10 Wh kg−1 and 2352 W kg−1, respectively. The further increase/decrease of current density and deposition time has a deleterious effect on the storage performance.

Abstract:The charge/discharge, electrochemical impedance, cyclic voltammogram, and cycling behaviors of crystalline KxMnO2·nH2O as cathode material for supercapacitors in Li2SO4, Na2SO4, and K2SO4 electrolytes were compared. The different power and cycling performance of KxMnO2·nH2O during charge/discharge in the three electrolytes were elucidated by analyzing its composition and structure evolution. Compared with the Li2SO4 and Na2SO4 electrolytes, the highest ionic conductivity of K2SO4 electrolyte, the fastest charge-transfer process and slightest structural evolution of KxMnO2·nH2O during charge/discharge in the K2SO4 electrolyte lead to a superior power and cycling behavior for supercapacitor application.

Abstract:The increasing worldwide interest in MnO2for supercapacitor applications is based on anticipation that MnO2-based high-voltage aqueous supercapacitors will ultimately serve as a safe and low-cost alternative to state-of-the-art commercial organic-based electrochemical double-layer capacitors or RuO2-based acid systems. In this paper, the physicochemical features, synthesis methods, and charge storage mechanism of MnO2as well as the current status of MnO2-based supercapacitors are summarized and discussed in detail. The future opportunities and challenges related to MnO2-based supercapacitors have also been proposed.

Abstract:Representative supercapacitor electrode materials: activated carbon for an electrochemical double layer capacitor, MgCo2O4 showing redox, i.e. non-pseudocapacitive, and MnO2 showing pseudocapacitive behavior have been examined and compared regarding mass utilization as a function of active layer thickness, i.e. mass loading, of rate of electrode potential change and current density. Abstract:In this work, we prepared MnO2 electrodes by ultrasonic-assisted electrodeposition to study the influence of current density on the surface morphology and electrochemical performances of the MnO2, as well as the electrochemical performances of MnO2 electrodes of supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries. The prepared MnO2 electrodes showed nanorod morphology, and the grain size changeed and presented a different distribution at different current densities. The electrochemical performances of as-prepared electrodes under a current density of 7 mA cm−2 shows a high mass specific capacitance of 415.4 F g−1 at the current density of 1 A g−1 in supercapacitors and 818.1 mA h·g−1 at 1 A g−1 after 200 cycles in lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Herein, we describe the preparation and characterization of graphene/carbon nanotube (CNT)/MnO v composites and the effects of chemical composition and phase transformation on the properties of the corresponding electrode film. In general, the effect of graphene-to-CNT ratio (G/C ratio) and the manganese (Mn) content on the morphology, chemical state, crystallization properties, and microstructure of the composite material was examined by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and selected area electron diffraction. The bonding mechanism between MnO v and graphite-based materials, that is, graphene and CNTs, is discussed. The influence of the composition of the composites on the performance of the electrode was investigated using charge-discharge curves. The faradically active MnO v also functioned as a considerable cobinder and allowed for a reduced amount of polymeric binder, which enhanced the conductivity and capacitance of the electrode. The optimized electrode composition was obtained based on our present graphene and CNT specifications. In summary, the results discussed in this article provide significant background information for future applications of graphene/CNT/MnO v composite electrodes.
Preparation of Manganese Dioxide for Electrodes of Supercapacitors Based on Duplex Stainless Steel

Abstract:A nano-structured manganese dioxide thin film was electrochemically deposited onto a 2304 duplex stainless steel (DSS) electrode. The structure, surface morphology, and composites of the obtained manganese dioxide were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. The electrochemical characteristics of the manganese dioxide electrodes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronopotentiometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The obtained manganese dioxide was found to be amorphous and the surface was composed of nanorods with lengths between 100 and 200 nm. As the mass of the manganese dioxide increased the capacitance also increased while the specific capacitance decreased. With an increase in the CV scan rate the specific capacitance decreased as well. The highest specific capacitance value of 288.9 F·g-1 was obtained at a scan rate of 20 mV·s-1 when the mass of manganese dioxide was 0.09 mg. 500 cycles were carried out at a rate of 100 mV·s-1 and we found that the specific capacitance remained stable and even increased slightly as the cycles increased.

Abstract:Electrochemistry and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of MnO2/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) were made to evaluate capacitive performance and electronic structure as a supercapacitor. MnO2 was deposited on the surface of RGO by a spontaneous redox reaction. At low current density (1 A g-1), the specific capacitance of MnO2/RGO (MRGO) greatly increased with increasing growth time from 281 to 462 F g−1. Electrochemical results show that the specific capacitance of RGO and MRGO arises from the combined contributions of electrochemical double-layer capacitance (EDLC) and pseudo-capacitance. To gain insights into the charge storage mechanism of RGO and MRGO, it was characterized using ex-situ soft XAS techniques at Mn L-edge and C, O K-edges in the charging/discharging process. The ex-situ soft XAS results provide evidence that the contribution of RGO to specific capacitance involves an oxygen-functionality-related contribution of pseudocapacitance and EDLC. In addition, the specific capacitance of MRGO reveals pseudocapacitive contributions from the redox processes that involve the Mn(III)/Mn(IV) redox reaction in MnO2. This work utilizes electrochemical and ex-situ XAS techniques to elucidate charge storage mechanism for supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:Anodic electrodepositing manganese oxide into a graphene hydrogel not only improves the carbon material's capacitive performance, but surface chemical environment of the GO framework is also affected. Apart from the deposition of nano-sized manganese oxide (about 6 nm), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry results confirm that reduction on oxygen-containing functional groups takes place during the anodic process. After the electrodeposition, weakness of the graphene hydrogel in capacitance is mitigated by the incorporation of the pseudo-capacitive material, with an almost 100% increase. And the composite electrode possesses superior rate capability, reversibility and cycling stability (only 8% deterioration in capacitance after 6000 charge/discharge cycles) as well. Abstract:Manganese dioxide deposits with nanostructures(MnO2) were electrochemically deposited onto graphite substrate from 0.16 mol/L MnSO4·5H2O with pH 5.7 by means of the potentiostatic,galvanostatic and cyclic voltammetry techniques.Properties of MnO2 were characterized by SEM technique and cyclic voltammetry.Results showed the structure of MnO2 depend strongly on the deposition mode,the even size of particle is about 50 nm by electrochemically deposited,the results of cyclic voltammetry in Na2SO4 electrolyte indicate that the maximum specific capacity of the material deposited by galvanostatic technique is 306.75 F/g in 0.3 mol/L Na2SO4.

Abstract:Asymmetric supercapacitors possess advantages of elevated capacitance, extended output voltage, and then improved power-energy characteristic. Here we report on a composite electrode prepared by electrodepositing manganese oxide into a graphene hydrogel and its capacitive performance in an asymmetric supercapacitor. The manganese oxide/graphene hydrogel exhibits a specific capacitance of 352.9 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1). The aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor composed of an active carbon as a negative electrode and the manganese oxide/graphene hydrogel as a positive electrode possesses good cycle stability (91.5% of capacitance retention after 5000 cycles) and is able to deliver an energy density of 41.8 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 0.2 kW kg(-1). Its possibility to serve as a power supply for a practical application was verified by lighting up a blue light-emitting diode. These results demonstrate the electrodeposition process has promising prospect in the preparation of high-performance composite electrodes for advanced electrochemical energy storage devices. Abstract:Nickel-doped manganese dioxide (Ni-MnO 2 ) synthesized by sol-gel method has been used as an electrode material for supercapacitors. The structure and electrochemical properties of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) and electrochemical impedance spectrometry (EIS). Results showed that the nickel-doped manganese dioxide sample exhibited irregular particles with the diameter of about 500 nm. The crystallographic structure of MnO 2 was the poorly crystallized γ-MnO 2 . The doping ratio had a great influence on the electrochemical properties of the materials. When the molar ratio of Ni/Mn was 3/100, the specific capacitance of Ni-MnO 2 achieved to 252.61 F/g. After 2000 charge/discharge cycles, the specific capacitance of Ni-MnO 2 was still maintained at 74.36%, which was attributed to its excellent cycling stability.
