Manganese Doped Co3O4 Mesoporous Nanoneedle Array for Long Cycle-Stable Supercapacitors

Abstract:Long-term cycling stability is an important criterion and big challenge for pseudocapacitive materials. Ultra-stable manganese doped Co3O4 mesoporous nanoneedles were synthesized via one-step hydrothermal reaction followed by annealing grown on nickel foam (noted as MnxCoyO/NF, x + y = 2.25) for supercapacitors. The Mn doping in Co3O4 was confirmed by several techniques. Among various MnxCoyO/NF electrodes, the Mn1.5Co0.75O/NF demonstrated the superior electrochemical performance, with an excellent cycling stability of 104% capacitance retention after 10 000 charge-discharge cycles at 6 A g(-1), as well as a good capability (668.4 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1 )compared to that of undoped Co3O4 which is 201.3 F g(-1)). Moreover, the assembled asymmetric supercapacitor based on Mn1.5Co0.75O/NF//graphene performs a high energy density of 25.88 Wh kg(-1) (at 359.5 W kg(-1)) and a high power density of 14.7 kW kg(-1) (at 10.63 Wh kg(-1)). The improved electrochemical properties are mainly owing to the enhanced intrinsic conductivity and electrochemical activity of Co3O4 after doped with appropriate Mn concentration. The three-dimensional nanostructure of mesoporous nanoneedle array grown on NF also provides short ion diffusion path and large active surface areas, contributing to the high rate performance and high energy density. This study may offer a new approach to fabricate the unique 3D nanostructured electrode materials based on doped metal oxides for supercapacitors with long-term cycling stability and high energy density.

Abstract:In this work, we prepared MnO2 electrodes by ultrasonic-assisted electrodeposition to study the influence of current density on the surface morphology and electrochemical performances of the MnO2, as well as the electrochemical performances of MnO2 electrodes of supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries. The prepared MnO2 electrodes showed nanorod morphology, and the grain size changeed and presented a different distribution at different current densities. The electrochemical performances of as-prepared electrodes under a current density of 7 mA cm−2 shows a high mass specific capacitance of 415.4 F g−1 at the current density of 1 A g−1 in supercapacitors and 818.1 mA h·g−1 at 1 A g−1 after 200 cycles in lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:In this paper, we used cyclic voltammetry method to prepare manganese dioxide with different scanning rates of voltage on a three-dimensional porous nickel foam substrate. We systematically studied the influence of the scanning rate of electrodeposition on the morphology, structure, and electrochemical performance of the sample. According to the electrochemical performance, we found the optimal electrodeposition parameters, and the electrode prepared under this condition has a high specific capacitance (458 F g−1 and 286 F g−1 at the current density of 1 A g−1 and 10 A g−1) and low impedance.

Abstract:In this study, manganese dioxide (MnO2) was electrochemically synthesized on the surface of a lead anode using different current densities (100–300 A m−2) and deposition time (4–6 h). This work intends to highlight the consequences of various electrodeposition parameters via the electrochemical approach. The MnO2 electrowinning plant must consider the effect of electrodeposition parameters that can ensue on the overall impact of electrolytically derived MnO2 (EMD) powder on a larger scale. The micrographs of the obtained EMD powder revealed that spindle-like morphology was observed for the current density between 100 and 200 A m−2, whereas moss-like morphology was observed at a current density above 200 A m−2 with increased surface roughness. The deposition time has not shown a profound effect. This study highlights the EMD deposited at 200 A m−2 for 5 h when tested in 2 M NaOH electrolyte exhibits a storage performance of 98 F g−1. For broader adoption of this material, the asymmetric device comprising EMD versus activated carbon (EMD/AC) has been fabricated. The asymmetric supercapacitor is a key for storing energy, which delivered 36 F g−1 at energy and power densities of 10 Wh kg−1 and 2352 W kg−1, respectively. The further increase/decrease of current density and deposition time has a deleterious effect on the storage performance.

Preparation of Manganese Dioxide for Electrodes of Supercapacitors Based on Duplex Stainless Steel

Abstract:A nano-structured manganese dioxide thin film was electrochemically deposited onto a 2304 duplex stainless steel (DSS) electrode. The structure, surface morphology, and composites of the obtained manganese dioxide were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. The electrochemical characteristics of the manganese dioxide electrodes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronopotentiometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The obtained manganese dioxide was found to be amorphous and the surface was composed of nanorods with lengths between 100 and 200 nm. As the mass of the manganese dioxide increased the capacitance also increased while the specific capacitance decreased. With an increase in the CV scan rate the specific capacitance decreased as well. The highest specific capacitance value of 288.9 F·g-1 was obtained at a scan rate of 20 mV·s-1 when the mass of manganese dioxide was 0.09 mg. 500 cycles were carried out at a rate of 100 mV·s-1 and we found that the specific capacitance remained stable and even increased slightly as the cycles increased.

Abstract:Manganese dioxide deposits with nanostructures(MnO2) were electrochemically deposited onto graphite substrate from 0.16 mol/L MnSO4·5H2O with pH 5.7 by means of the potentiostatic,galvanostatic and cyclic voltammetry techniques.Properties of MnO2 were characterized by SEM technique and cyclic voltammetry.Results showed the structure of MnO2 depend strongly on the deposition mode,the even size of particle is about 50 nm by electrochemically deposited,the results of cyclic voltammetry in Na2SO4 electrolyte indicate that the maximum specific capacity of the material deposited by galvanostatic technique is 306.75 F/g in 0.3 mol/L Na2SO4.

Abstract:Nickel-doped manganese dioxide (Ni-MnO 2 ) synthesized by sol-gel method has been used as an electrode material for supercapacitors. The structure and electrochemical properties of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) and electrochemical impedance spectrometry (EIS). Results showed that the nickel-doped manganese dioxide sample exhibited irregular particles with the diameter of about 500 nm. The crystallographic structure of MnO 2 was the poorly crystallized γ-MnO 2 . The doping ratio had a great influence on the electrochemical properties of the materials. When the molar ratio of Ni/Mn was 3/100, the specific capacitance of Ni-MnO 2 achieved to 252.61 F/g. After 2000 charge/discharge cycles, the specific capacitance of Ni-MnO 2 was still maintained at 74.36%, which was attributed to its excellent cycling stability.

Abstract:In this study, we have used various electrodeposition techniques, namely direct and pulse chronoamperometry, to prepare MnO 2 –NiO composite films from an acetate solution onto fluorine-doped tin oxide glass substrates (FTO). Subsequently, the metal oxide conversion process was carried out through a heat treatment at 300 °C for 5 h. We used X-ray Diffraction, Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) to investigate the crystalline properties, compositions, and morphologies of the electrodeposited films. To evaluate the electrochemical performance, we conducted cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge–discharge tests (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Specifically, when applying the pulse deposition mode (denoted as P), the FTO/MnO 2 –NiO (P) film exhibited a specific capacitance of 375 Fg −1 at a current density of 0.5 Ag −1 , meeting the required standard. This result confirms that the FTO/MnO 2 –NiO (P) film is a promising alternative for electrode applications. Additionally, the film demonstrated an impressive 56.87% capacity retention after 1000 galvanostatic charge–discharge cycles at a current density of 2 Ag −1 .

Electrodeposited Porous Mn1.5Co1.5O₄/Ni Composite Electrodes for High-Voltage Asymmetric Supercapacitors

Abstract:Mesoporous Mn1.5Co1.5O₄ (MCO) spinel films were prepared directly on a conductive nickel (Ni) foam substrate via electrodeposition and an annealing treatment as supercapacitor electrodes. The electrodeposition time markedly influenced the surface morphological, textural, and supercapacitive properties of MCO/Ni electrodes. The (MCO/Ni)-15 min electrode (electrodeposition time: 15 min) exhibited the highest capacitance among three electrodes (electrodeposition times of 7.5, 15, and 30 min, respectively). Further, an asymmetric supercapacitor that utilizes (MCO/Ni)-15 min as a positive electrode, a plasma-treated activated carbon (PAC)/Ni electrode as a negative electrode, and carboxymethyl cellulose-lithium nitrate (LiNO₃) gel electrolyte (denoted as (PAC/Ni)//(MCO/Ni)-15 min) was fabricated. In a stable operation window of 2.0 V, the device exhibited an energy density of 27.6 Wh·kg-1 and a power density of 1.01 kW·kg-1 at 1 A·g-1. After 5000 cycles, the specific energy density retention and power density retention were 96% and 92%, respectively, demonstrating exceptional cycling stability. The good supercapacitive performance and excellent stability of the (PAC/Ni)//(MCO/Ni)-15 min device can be ascribed to the hierarchical structure and high surface area of the (MCO/Ni)-15 min electrode, which facilitate lithium ion intercalation and deintercalation at the electrode/electrolyte interface and mitigate volume change during long-term charge/discharge cycling.
Facile Fabrication of Mesoporous Manganese Oxides As Advanced Electrode Materials for Supercapacitors

Abstract:Mesoporous manganese oxides (MnO2) were synthesized via a facile chemical deposition strategy. Three kinds of basic precipitants including sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were employed to adjust the microstructures and surface morphologies of MnO2 materials. The obtained MnO2 materials display different microstructures. Great differences are observed in their specific surface area and porosity properties. The microstructures and surface morphologies characteristics of MnO2 materials largely determine their pseudocapacitive behavior for supercapacitors. The MnO2 prepared with Na2CO3 precipitant exhibits the optimal microstructures and surface morphologies compared with the other two samples, contributing to their best electrochemical performances for supercapacitors when conducted either in the single electrode tests or in the capacitor measurements. The optimal MnO2 electrode exhibits a high specific capacitance (173 F g–1 at 0.25 A g−1), high-rate capability (123 F g−1 at 4 A g−1), and excellent cyclic stability (no capacitance loss after 5,000 cycles at 1 A g−1). The optimal activated carbon//MnO2 hybrid capacitor exhibits a wide working voltage (1.8 V), high-power and high-energy densities (1,734 W kg−1 and 20.9 Wh kg−1), and excellent cycling behavior (93.8 % capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles at 1 A g−1), indicating the promising applications of the easily fabricated mesoporous MnO2 for supercapacitors.

Abstract:In this work, MnO 2 &SDBS electrodes with nano-honeycomb morphology were prepared by ultrasound-assisted electrochemical deposition using sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) as a surfactant agent. The effect and mechanism of SDBS on the morphology of MnO 2 nanomaterials during the preparation of MnO 2 by electrochemical anodic oxidation was systematically investigated by varying the content of SDBS in the precursor solution. When the SDBS concentration is 2 g · l −1 , the resulting electrode has the best electrochemical performance, and the specific capacitance is up to 407 F · g −1 at the current density of 1000 mA · g −1 . To further enhance its performance, a carbon coating layer was deposited on the surface of the electrode using a method similar to chemical vapor deposition. Finally, the MnO 2 &SDBS@C electrode with a three-dimensional net-to-film composite structure with a high specific surface area, hierarchical structure and interconnect with nickel foam supports were obtained. The electrode has excellent electrochemical performance, and the specific capacitance is still up to 289 F · g −1 at a high current density of 5000 mA · g −1 . Furthermore, the specific capacitance of the electrode was maintained at 83.9% after 500 cycles of charging and discharging at a current density of 2000 Am·g −1 .

Abstract:Charging and discharging processes in supercapacitors and secondary batteries are critically dependent on elementary rate determining sub-processes (ERDSPs) with different relaxation time (τ) at different frequencies. In this work, distribution of relaxation time (DRT) method is employed to investigate the ERDSPs and relevant kinetics of electrodeposited MnO2 electrodes. Two ERDSPs are identified: ion diffusion at low frequencies (100-0.1Hz), and the mechanism of ERDSP at high frequencies (105-102 Hz) is found to be charge transfer across the MnO2/electrolyte interface. The rate capability is found to reduce with the increasing electrode thickness (<math>l</math>), which is attributed to the increasing relaxation time of diffusion (<math>τd</math>), proportional to <math>l2</math>. Oxygen vacancies (VO••) can lead to an increased specific capacitance. Meanwhile, VO•• with positive effective charge may also lead to repulsion to cations, and thus increase the activation energy (Ea) of charge transfer (Ea-ct) and diffusion (Ea-diff) processes. Enhancing cycling stability with reducing Mn3+ and VO•• concentration may result from reducing Mn element loss due to disproportionation reaction of Mn3+, and alleviating polarization and increasing reversibility due to reducing Ea-ct and Ea-diff.

Abstract:The Manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanoparticles uniformly grown on graphene/Ni foam have been fabricated by a simple and effective electrodeposition method as electrode (MnO2/G/Ni foam) materials for electrochemical capacitors. The morphological and structural of the nanocomposites were studied by SEM, XRD and XPS. Electrochemical properties were tested by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and galvanostatic charge/discharge (GCD). The results show the electrode of MnO2/G/Ni foam exhibit a high specific capacitance (1465.25 F g−1 at current density of 2 A g−1), excellent rate performance (998.25 F g−1 at 10 A g−1) and good cycle stability (86.09% after 5000 cycles for 10 A g−1). These results demonstrated that this low-cost and high performance device has broad application prospects for energy storage applications in electrochemical capacitors.

Abstract:The supercapacitor energy storage system has achieved a great attention, in future perspective, as compared to ordinary dielectric capacitors and batteries. The nature and type of electrode material employed in supercapacitor applications is critical to the electrochemical performance of a supercapacitor. Herein, co-precipitation derived Mn 3 O 4 nanoparticles were mixed with graphite in a simple way and obtained uniformly mixed composite of exfoliated graphene with these nanoparticles. The electrochemical study of these composites revealed promising results for supercapacitor applications. X-ray diffraction study revealed the formation of single-phase Mn 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The composite was probed for microstructural examination, by scanning electron microscopy, which revealed that Mn 3 O 4 was uniformly embedded in exfoliated graphene sheets, aimed specifically for better electrochemical performance. The elemental composition was studied by energy dispersive X-rays spectroscopy and electrochemical performance of the composite deposited on Nickel foam for electrode using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA, 10%) as a binder has been examined by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 1M K 2 SO 4 electrolyte. In addition, different ratios of Mn 3 O 4 /graphene were prepared to investigate composition dependent performance of these composites. The highest value of specific capacitance achieved for composition (1:2) was 334 F/g at scan rate of 5 mVs −1 .

Abstract:Mn3O4 electrodes were prepared by electrochemical deposition in the C4H6MnO4·H2O aqueous solution.The microstructure and properties of the Mn3O4 electrodes were studied.The results show that the Mn3O4 electrodes prepared in the C4H6MnO4·H2O solution with NaNO3 show a porous surface consisting of nano-sheets and exhibit good performance: their charge transfer resistance is low,while their specific capacitance reaches 122.5 F·g-1,which is 70% higher compared with the electrodes prepared without NaNO3.

Abstract:In this paper, CuO/MnO2 composites with different morphology were successfully fabricated by simple and economical electrodeposition and successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method as electrode materials for supercapacitors (SCs). The spherical and wheat-shaped CuO/MnO2 composites were obtained by changing the deposition voltage. The wheat-shaped CuO/MnO2 composite electrodes exhibited better electrochemical performance than the spherical. Its areal capacitance is up to 261.4 mF/cm2 at a current density of 1 mA/cm2 in 1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte and the capacitance retention reaches 90% after 1000 charge-discharge cycles. The symmetric aqueous SCs was then assembled with wheat-shaped CuO/MnO2 as positive and negative electrode materials respectively. The SCs exhibited not only outstanding specific capacitance of 152.7 mF/cm2 at 1 mA/cm2, but also good cycling stability of 74.2% after 500 charge-discharge cycles. Furthermore, its operating voltage window reaches 1.6 V, which results in an outstanding energy density of 54.3 μWh/cm2 and a power density of 5040 μW/cm2. This strategy of changing the morphology of materials by changing the deposition voltage provides an ideal scheme for improving the properties.

Abstract:The increasing worldwide interest in MnO2for supercapacitor applications is based on anticipation that MnO2-based high-voltage aqueous supercapacitors will ultimately serve as a safe and low-cost alternative to state-of-the-art commercial organic-based electrochemical double-layer capacitors or RuO2-based acid systems. In this paper, the physicochemical features, synthesis methods, and charge storage mechanism of MnO2as well as the current status of MnO2-based supercapacitors are summarized and discussed in detail. The future opportunities and challenges related to MnO2-based supercapacitors have also been proposed.
Effect of Composition Ratios on the Performance of Graphene/Carbon Nanotube/Manganese Oxide Composites toward Supercapacitor Applications

Abstract:Herein, we describe the preparation and characterization of graphene/carbon nanotube (CNT)/MnO v composites and the effects of chemical composition and phase transformation on the properties of the corresponding electrode film. In general, the effect of graphene-to-CNT ratio (G/C ratio) and the manganese (Mn) content on the morphology, chemical state, crystallization properties, and microstructure of the composite material was examined by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and selected area electron diffraction. The bonding mechanism between MnO v and graphite-based materials, that is, graphene and CNTs, is discussed. The influence of the composition of the composites on the performance of the electrode was investigated using charge-discharge curves. The faradically active MnO v also functioned as a considerable cobinder and allowed for a reduced amount of polymeric binder, which enhanced the conductivity and capacitance of the electrode. The optimized electrode composition was obtained based on our present graphene and CNT specifications. In summary, the results discussed in this article provide significant background information for future applications of graphene/CNT/MnO v composite electrodes.
