Abstract:Silver nano-shells (SNSs) were synthesized via a two-step seeds-mediated method. Polymer cores were composed of ultrafine gold nanoparticles (NPs) modified chitosan–poly(acrylic acid) nanoparticles (CS–PAA NPs). Then, deposition of silver upon gold nucleus leads to the seed enlargement and finally forms silver shell on the surface of CS–PAA NPs to get SNSs. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) showed SNSs had a discrete silver shell plus some pores and gaps, which could acted as “hot spots” and provided the great potential of these SNSs to be used as SERS substrates with wavelength ranging from visible to infrared region (700–1000nm) by tuning shell coverage of silver. SERS experiments with dibenzyl disulphide (DBDS) as the indicator showed that the resulting SNSs allowed the production of highly consistent enhancement of the Raman signals down to nM concentrations of DBDS. Considering the excellent biocompatibility of polymer core and their small size, these SNSs are highly desirable candidates as the enhancers for high performance SERS analysis and as SERS optical labels in biomedical imaging.
In-Situ Immobilization of Silver Nanoparticles on Self-Assembled Honeycomb-Patterned Films Enables Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) Substrates

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an important sustainable technique because of its ability to detect trace-level analytes including pesticides, heavy metals, explosives, proteins, pathogens, and other chemical and biological contaminants. In this paper, we report a facile approach to highly sensitive SERS substrates by combining hierarchically patterned micro- and nanostructures with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) adsorbed on poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) surface. The patterned structures were fabricated using breath figures as dynamic templates in which polar block enriches at the rim of the pores. This characteristic of the breath figure method makes it possible to employ a simple coating technique to construct substrates decorated with Ag NPs, which have a diameter mostly ranging from 18 to 30 nm. Results indicate that the hierarchically ordered substrates show enhancement factors as high as 4 X 10(8). It is also found that the enhancement factors are concentration-dependent, relying on the ratio of the number of analytes to Ag NPs. Moreover, the prominent enhancement at Raman shift of similar to 614 cm(-1) has been observed, which will be useful in the detection of analytes such as some kinds of pesticides and viruses with characteristic peaks in this Raman shift range (e.g., adenovirus). This proposed approach provides an effective, reproducible, electroless, and facile method for preparing high-quality SERS substrates.
SERS Substrate Based on the Flexible Hybrid of Polydimethylsiloxane and Silver Colloid Decorated with Silver Nanoparticles

Abstract:Various flexible SERS sensors have attracted widespread concern in performing the direct identification of the analytes adsorbed on arbitrary surfaces. Here, a sample method was proposed to integrate plasmonic nanoparticles into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to fabricate flexible substrate for the decoration of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The flexible SERS sensor based on AgNPs/AgNPs-PDMS offers highly sensitive Raman detection with enhancement factor up to 8.3 × 109, which can be attributed to the integrative effects from both the increase of the light absorption of the embedded AgNPs in PDMS substrate and the EM enhancement from the adjacent top-top, bottom-bottom and top-bottom AgNPs. After undergoing the cyclic mechanical deformation, the SERS substrate still maintains high mechanical stability and stable SERS signals. However, upon stretching the flexible substrate, there was an amusing phenomenon that SERS signals can be highly increased, which results from that the reduction of lateral nanogaps between top and bottom of the PDMS boundary strengthens the trigger of the plasmon coupling as demonstrated by the simulated result. This result reveals that the tuning and the coupling of the electromagnetic fields can be effectively controlled by the macroscopic mechanical solicitation. That will have an important significance for practical applications in strain-dependent sensors and detectors.

Abstract:Large-area gold and silver nanoparticles inside periodical silicon microhole arrays were prepared via simple electrodeposition. Such metal nanoparticles within Si microholes showed a strong surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect, which enabled the detection of rhodamine at 10(-8) M and 10(-9) M on substrates of AuNPs and AgNPs, respectively. The SERS activity of the substrates depended on the metal particle morphology. Microfabrication combined with electrodeposition appears to be a viable approach for preparing reproducible SERS Substrates for sensitive Raman detection.

Abstract:Abstract Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has drawn attention for broad applications. We successfully fabricated highly effective SERS structures via evaporation-induced self-assembly of blend nanoparticles containing sliver nanospheres (Ag NSs) and gold nanorods (Au NRs) on a super-hydrophobic (SH) substrate. On the SH substrate, the droplets of the mixed aqueous solution of silver nanospheres (Ag NSs), gold nanorods (Au NRs), and probe molecules can preserve their spherical shape during the evaporation process, and the probe molecules (R6G) are confined into extremely small areas after solvent removal due to hydrophobicity-enhanced concentration effects. The Raman enhancement effect of the blend nanoparticles with 40 vol% Ag NSs is far higher than that of the other samples. The structure of the aggregated Ag NSs on the film-like Au NRs greatly enhances the SERS effect of Ag NSs, which is optimal for the blend system with 40 vol% Ag NSs. The SERS structure also displays excellent signal reproducibility (RSD < 10%) and low detection limits (0.5 nM). Thus, this work offers a simple and efficient strategy to fabricate a highly effective SERS structure with broad applications in environmental science, analytical chemistry, etc.

Abstract:The silica microparticles enriched with mercapto groups were prepared by sol-gel method and silver nanoparticles were synthesized in situ on the surface. The microparticles as active matrix for SERS(Surface enhanced Raman scattering). The effect of silver nanoparticles as a"hot spot"on SERS performance was discussed. The in situ formation of silver nanoparticles leads to the roughening of the microspheres,and the dense nanoparticles can form more hot spots. The microspheres were characterized by trans-mission electron microscopy,scanning electron microscopy,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,Raman and so on. The results show that the mercapto groups on the surface of microspheres directly lead to the growth of silver nanoparticles and provide a reducing en-vironment for the stability of silver nanoparticles.

Abstract:A simple and cost-effective chemical method was introduced to assemble gold (Au) nanoparticles on smooth silver (Ag) spheres for realizing surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement by the replacement reaction between chloroauric acid and Ag spheres. In addition, the Ag-Au core-shell spheres were fabricated when a certain amount of chloroauric acid was used in the reaction solution. We found that the Ag particles decorated with small Au nanoparticles demonstrated the strongest SERS enhancement, while Ag-Au core-shell spheres showed the weakest enhancement.

Abstract:A facile and economic method to fabricate and immobilize silver nanoparticles on a thin Si wafer (AgNP/Si) is reported for an analytical template in ambient environment by surface‐enhanced infrared/Raman spectroscopy. The protocol involves immersion of the Si wafer in a solution containing silver nitrate and hydrofluoric acid. To screen appropriate conditions for preparing AgNP/Si for SEIRAS application, different combinations of AgNO3 and HF solutions were examined with paranitrobenzoic acid (PNBA) used as the probe molecule in transmission measurements. These SEIRA‐active substrates were also promising for SERS application, as demonstrated with high quality SERS spectra of iron (III) protoporphyrin adlayer on AgNP/Si with a red excitation line. The AgNP/Si substrates prepared under different conditions were examined by SEM for qualitative correlation of enhancements with morphologies. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
A Portable Microcolumn Based on Silver Nanoparticle Functionalized Glass Fibers and Its SERS Application

Abstract:We presented a facile method for the preparation of a portable detection column integrated with silver nanoparticle (Ag NP) functionalized glass fibers for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Ag NPs were immobilized onto the surface of fibers through a two-step self-assembly process, and the cycling of the assembly process was repeated to optimize the SERS activity. The optimized fibers coated with homogeneous and dense Ag NPs were combined with a glass column, displaying good reproducibility. This combination could construct more "hot spots" and the spatial intra-channel structure for high mass transfer, and provide more sufficient interactions between the probing laser and metallic nanoparticles. The capability of the prepared column to have high sensitivity to dyes was demonstrated by the measurements of rhodamine 6G, alizarin red and methyl orange, with low concentrations of 28 pM, 64 pM and 0.36 nM, respectively. The SERS-active column fabricated by a facile, low-cost and high-yield approach is expected to be an effective and practical means for on-site application when rapid separation and detection of analytes in the liquid sample is needed.

Abstract:A simple and convenient methodology to fabricate silver-coated Au@SiO2 core/shell nanomaterials (Au@SiO2@Ag nanostructures) is developed by cyclic electroplating and stripping of AgNO3 on the surface of Au@SiO2 core/shell nanoparticles, and the proposed nanostructures served as sensitive and reproducible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates. Silver coverage of nanostructured Au@SiO2@Ag could be easily controlled by electrodeposition time without substrate motion. The Au@SiO2@Ag nanostructures possess a hexagonal array multiplying the hot spots. SERS of the nanostructures was examined at different electrodeposition times using rhodamine B (RdB) as probe molecule and 785 nm excitation. Optimum SERS was observed when silver was electrodeposited at -0.4 V for 1 min. RdB can be detected down to 10(-11) M even without the resonance SERS effect, and the enhancement factor was found at 1.03 x 10(5). Additionally, silver shells could be easily stripped electrochemically when immersed in the H2SO4 solution for rebuilding and recycling the SERS substrates. The results validate the feasibility for quantitative detection of biomolecules in organisms and combine the advantages of recyclability and sensitivity.

Abstract:We introduce a platform, comprised of silver nanoparticle decorated silica nanowires (SiONWs) dispersed on fused quartz substrates, for high sensitivity surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurements using both frontal (through the analytes) and back-face (through the transparent substrate) excitation. Quasi-quantitative SERS performances on the specialized substrate, vis-à-vis a silver deposited bare fused quartz plate, showed: (i) the suitability of the Ag modified SiONW substrate for frontal as well as back-face excitation; (ii) a wider detection range with high sensitivity to Rhodamine 6G; and (iii) good underwater metal-oxide adhesion of the specialized substrates. Capable of surviving ultrasonic cleaning, the substrate introduced is one of the few reusable low-cost Ag-based nanostructured SERS substrates, requiring only a simple silver reload process (the silver mirror reaction).

Abstract:Silver particles have been widely used in SERS detection as an enhancement substrate. The large-scale synthesis of Ag particles with controllable size and shape is still a challenge. We demonstrate a high-throughput method for the preparation of monodisperse submicron silver particles using S-shaped microfluidic chips. Submicron silver particles were prepared by a simplified reduction method. By adjusting the concentration of the reducing agent ascorbic acid and the stabilizer PVP, the particle size and morphology could be controlled, obtaining a size distribution of 1–1.2 μm for flower-like silver particles and a size distribution of 0.5–0.7 μm for quasi-spherical silver particles. This microfluidic system can be used to fabricate submicron silver particles on a large scale, continuously and stably, with a production efficiency of around 1.73 mg/min. The synthesized submicron silver particles could realize ultra-sensitive SERS detection, and the lowest concentration of rhodamine 6G (R6G) that could be detected was 10−9 M.

Abstract:A new type of polymer core and silver nanoparticle/silica shell multifunctional composite microsphere is reported. The monodisperse polymer core of poly(styrene-co-acrylic acid), prepared by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization, serves as the supporting template to facilitate the synthesis and handling of the highly functionalized substrates to achieve consistent mechanical and surface chemical properties. The shell of silver nanoparticles, formed in situ by controlled interfacial reduction of AgNO3 with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), serves as the optimal metal enhancer for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The Ag nanoparticle shell is stabilized with a silica layer using a sol-gel process, which is also functionalizable with reactive epoxides for further bio-conjugation using epoxy ring-opening methods. Preliminary results indicated that the microspheres are easily prepared with exceptional chemical and physical uniformity. SERS experiments with 4-aminobenzenethiol (4-ABT) as the indicator showed that the resulting multifunctional microspheres allowed the production of highly consistent enhancement of the Raman signals down to nM concentrations of 4-ABT, making them highly desirable candidates as the enhancers for high performance SERS analysis and as SERS optical labels in biomedical imaging. The microspheres are robust and the high density of the SERS active Ag nanoparticles on the microspheres provided unique signal averaging for the method to be potentially quantitative which is an urgent goal for SERS substrate design and SERS analysis.

Abstract:The surface morphology of metal particles can be adjusted by the annealing process to enhance the activity of Raman substrate and achieve an ultra-low concentration detection limitation. In this study, a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate of coccinellaseptempunctate-like silver nanospheres coated with a silver nanoisland structure (Ag NI@Ag NSs) was prepared using a simple annealing process. Numerous silver nanospheres were dispersed on the surface of the silver nanoislands, which exhibited a single crystal plane (111) orientation. The SERS substrate had an enhancement factor of 108 for Rhodamine B (Rh B) and was highly sensitive to phosphoethanolamine (PETA). The SERS response toward PETA showed excellent correlation during the range of 5 × 10−7 - 1 × 10−5 mol/L with the detection limitation as low as 5 × 10−7 mol/L, and the correlation coefficient is 0.9918. The simulated high-pressure test showed that the SERS response could be still observed at 1100 m sub ocean pressure even with a PETA concentration of 1 mM. The test results of selectivity, reproducibility, and accuracy indicated that the Ag NI@Ag NS sensor possessed potential applications in the deep-sea analytical and other related fields.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of silver nanodecahedrons (Ag NDs) and their use as surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) nano-composites. The as-prepared Ag NDs possess strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) with widely tunable peaks between 420-660 nm, which was formerly not possible, thus greatly improving the prospect of using silver nanoparticles for SERS applications. The growth of large size Ag NDs (LSPR peak longer than 490 nm) results from a seed-mediated step involving the reduction of silver cations by photo-excitation (illumination wavelength at 500 nm). Ag ND-SERS composites formed from a layer-by-layer coating technique show strong Raman signal enhancement and good material stability because of passivation effects from the coating. The reported silica-coated Ag NDs may be used with other molecular species to take advantage of field enhancement for a variety of applications, including non-linear harmonics generation and fluorescence enhancement.

Abstract:Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was used as both a modifier and reductant to in situ deposit silver nanoparticles (denoted Ag NPs) on the surface of silica nanospheres (nanosilica or nano-SiO2), affording Ag-decorated nanosilica (denoted SiO2@Ag). The as-obtained SiO2@Ag composite can form silver nanoparticle-decorated silica nanosphere arrays (denoted SiO2@Ag arrays) via evaporation-induced self-assembly. The as-prepared SiO2@Ag composite and SiO2@Ag array were used as the SERS substrates to measure the Raman signals of the dilute solutions of rhodamine 6G (denoted R6G), an organic dye that is a potential pollutant to the environment. The findings indicate that the as-prepared SiO2@Ag composite and SiO2@Ag array as potential SERS substrates simultaneously exhibit a high degree of metal coverage and small size of Ag NPs as well as good stability and abundant "hot spots", which contributes to their desired Raman enhancement capacities. For the detection of trace R6G, they provide a limit of detection of as low as 10-9-10-11 M as well as good reproducibility, showing promising potential for monitoring chemical and biological molecules.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy is a powerful technology in trace analysis. However, the wide applications of SERS in practice are limited by the expensive substrate materials and the complicated preparation processes. Here we report a simple and economical galvanic-replacement-assisted synthesis route to prepare Ag nanoparticles on Cu(0) foil (nanoAg@Cu), which can be directly used as SERS substrate. The fabrication process is fast (ca. 10 min) and easily scaled up to centimeters or even larger. In addition, the morphology of the nanoAg@Cu (with Ag particles size from 30 nm to 160 nm) can be adjusted by various additives (e.g., amino-containing ligands). Finally, we show that the as-prepared nanoAg@Cu can be used for SERS characterization of two-dimensional polymers, and ca. 298 times relative enhancement of Raman intensity is achieved. This work offers a simple and economical strategy for the scalable fabrication of silver-based SERS substrate in thin film analysis.

Abstract:We proposed a facile and rapid method for preparing silica-silver core-shell(SSCS) substrates to use Ag electroless plating on SiO2@Au-seed particles.UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectrometer and SEM were employed to monitor the reaction process of the formation of Ag on the surfaces of silica beads,and the optical resonance of the substrate could shift from visible to NIR region.It has been found that surface-enhanced Raman scattering(SERS) enhancement changes with the electroless plating time and the SSCS substrate with the plating time of 90 s(90SSCS) shows the strongest SERS response under the laser excitation at 514.5 nm.Signals collected over multiple spots and substrate of rhodamine 6G(R6G) resulted in a relative standard deviation(RSD) of 9.75%.The calculated enhancement factor(EF) was approximately 105 "106.SSCS substrate exhibits high SERS performance,which is due to electromagnetic SERS enhancement with additional localization field within closely packed Ag nanoparticles decorated on the SiO2 nanoparticles.And this substrate presents tunable and broad localized surface plasmon resonance(LSPR),so this method may open a new way for SERS studies with other laser excitation.
