Abstract:We describe the electrochemical synthesis of silver oxide nanowires and nanowire bundles, filled platelets and hollow microplatelets in either basic or acidic N,N-dimethylformamide solution. We propose that these nanostructures are formed at the electrode surface via two competing reactions namely, silver dissolution off the electrode in the presence of NH3 or HF during the anodization of silver, and silver oxide precipitation. Results show that the precipitated silver oxide nanoparticles aggregate into nanowires as well as into filled and hollow microscale platelets, depending upon the nuclei concentration and the anodization current density. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and Raman scattering spectroscopy show that the nanowires and microplatelets are mainly composed of Ag2O. Nanowire bundles are used as substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) where single molecule detection is achieved and evidenced using a bianalyte Raman technique.

Abstract:Recently, photochemical synthesis has attracted wide interest on in situ preparing the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate with excellent performance, especially in a compact space and microfluidic channel. Herein, a facile, green and cost-effective approach to in situ photochemically synthesize silver nanoaggregates is demonstrated for SERS applications. By adjusting the photo-irradiation conditions, the morphologies and sizes of the silver nanoaggregates can be deliberately tailored. The synthesized silver nanoaggregates-based substrates exhibit a highly sensitive and reproducible SERS activity with a low detection limit of 10(-8) M for 4-Aminothiophenol detection and relative standard deviation of 12.3%, paving an efficient and promising route for in situ SERS-based rapid detection in the environmental monitoring and food quality control.
Morphology and Composition Controlled Synthesis of Flower-Like Silver Nanostructures.

Abstract:Flower-like silver nanostructures with controlled morphology and composition were prepared through wet-chemical synthesis. The reaction rate is simply manipulated by the amount of catalyzing agent ammonia added which is the key point to determine the ratio of hexagonal close-packed (HCP) to face-centered cubic (FCC) phase in silver nanostructures. The existence of formic acid that is the oxidation product of aldehyde group is demonstrated to play a crucial role in achieving the metastable HCP crystal structures by replacing ionic surfactants with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Utilizing flower-like silver nanostructures as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates, Raman signal of Rhodamine 6G, or 4-aminothiophenol with concentration as low as 10−7 M was detected. Moreover, it is demonstrated that phase composition has no direct relation to the SERS enhancing factor which is mainly determined by the amount of hot spots.

Abstract:Herein flower-like silver nanostructures with different size and ratio of hexagonal close-packed (HCP) to face-centered cubic (FCC) phase were synthetized. By comparing with the results utilizing different surfactants, the growth process of Ag nanostructures has been investigated. Flower-like Ag nanoparticles containing numerous hot spots could serve as excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates, and the Raman signal of Rhodamine 6G with the concentration as low as 10-6 M can be recognized.

Abstract:This communication describes a new surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active silver substrate prepared by iodination of the evaporated silver foil. After iodination, the morphology of the silver substrate undergoes a self-evolution process in which it displays accordingly the UV-vis absorption shift as well as the AFM topological test. Rhodamine 6G (R6G) is used as the probe molecule to evaluate the enhancement efficiency of the silver substrate at different self-evolution time intervals. The SERS intensity of R6G increases up to similar to 29-fold and reaches a maximum after the substrate evolved for 24 h. This method is feasible for the production of an efficient SERS silver substrate.

Abstract:A simple method of the reduction of AgNO3 by copper foil in aqueous medium was used to prepare silver dendrites, which can be used as a novel good reproducible surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active substrate. Abstract:A wet chemical approaches affiliated with the traditional colloids has been introduced to provide the nanometer silver particle with nanostructure for the fabrication of the Ag active SERS substrate. The ultra-simple and facile method has been demonstrated. The Ag silver particle was reduced from AgNO3 in the presence of polyacrylic acid (PAA) and ethanol amine (EA) acting as the surfactant and co-surfactant. The morphology, structures and surface information were studied by many characterization techniques. The wash-clean particle was deposited on the Si wafer to prepare the Ag film without any other specific treatment but self-assembly. The SERS enhancement performance of sensitivity, limit of detection and reproductivity has been investigated.

Abstract:Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was used as both a modifier and reductant to in situ deposit silver nanoparticles (denoted Ag NPs) on the surface of silica nanospheres (nanosilica or nano-SiO2), affording Ag-decorated nanosilica (denoted SiO2@Ag). The as-obtained SiO2@Ag composite can form silver nanoparticle-decorated silica nanosphere arrays (denoted SiO2@Ag arrays) via evaporation-induced self-assembly. The as-prepared SiO2@Ag composite and SiO2@Ag array were used as the SERS substrates to measure the Raman signals of the dilute solutions of rhodamine 6G (denoted R6G), an organic dye that is a potential pollutant to the environment. The findings indicate that the as-prepared SiO2@Ag composite and SiO2@Ag array as potential SERS substrates simultaneously exhibit a high degree of metal coverage and small size of Ag NPs as well as good stability and abundant "hot spots", which contributes to their desired Raman enhancement capacities. For the detection of trace R6G, they provide a limit of detection of as low as 10-9-10-11 M as well as good reproducibility, showing promising potential for monitoring chemical and biological molecules.

Abstract:We describe a simple and green method for preparing silver nanoparticles with an average diameter in the range from 4.0 nm to 5.0 nm and with the standard deviation as low as 0.3 nm (polydispersity: 5.5%). The pre-synthesized silver oleate precursor in oleic acid was thermally reduced to obtain the monodisperse silver nanoparticles without a size selection procedure. This environmentally friendly chemistry approach requires only three reagents (silver nitrate, sodium oleate and oleic acid) which all come from renewable resources. The average diameter of these nanoparticles can be greatly adjusted by varying reaction time and finely regulated by varying reaction temperature at the same precursor concentration. The nucleation/diffusional growth model can be used to interpret the size and morphology difference of silver nanoparticles synthesized under different conditions. Raman spectra of graphene with and without an active layer of silver nanoparticles were measured to investigate the surface-enhanced Raman scattering properties of the silver nanoparticles. The Raman signal of graphene with an active layer increased by fifteen-fold in comparison to that without an active layer. The surface-enhanced Raman scattering activity can be explained using interparticle coupling induced Raman enhancement.
Amino acid-assisted synthesis of hierarchical silver microspheres for single particle surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Abstract:We demonstrate the use of amino acids as directing agents to synthesize hierarchical silver microspheres assembled by nanosheets with well morphologies, in the absence of any other surfactants or capping agents. This fabrication method avoids the absorption of macromolecules and enables clean surface on the Ag microspheres. The chemical nature of the amino acids plays a vital role in the hierarchical structure of the Ag microspheres. As found, amino acids with simple structures and 2-3 carbon atoms like alanine and glycine lead to more loosely packed Ag microspheres, and those with more complicated structures and more carbon atoms, e.g. glycine, glutamine, and asparagine, result in close packed Ag particles assembled by thinner nanosheets. By adjusting the concentration of AgNO3 solution, size as well as the surface roughness of the Ag microspheres can be well controlled. Individual particles of the constructed hierarchical Ag microspheres with highly roughened surface can act as sensitive SERS platforms. Detection of chemical molecules and monitoring of the plasmon-driven chemical reactions have been carried out through a single particle SERS technique.

Abstract:We describe a simple method to synthesize triangular silver nanoparticles by photoreducing the silver ions by citrate. A noteworthy difference of the present method as compared with the previous photo-induced methods is that good shape control over the nanoparticles can be realized in the absence of soft templates or polymer directing agents. The formation process of the silver nanoparticles was investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that the concentration of reactant plays important role in the morphology control of produced silver nanoparticles. As one of the applications of these nanoparticles, they were used as surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates and 1,4-bis[2-(4-pyridyl)ethenyl]-benzene (BVPP) was used as a Raman probe to evaluate the enhancement ability of the triangular silver nanoparticles.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been recognized as a promising sensing technique in biomedical/biosensing applications and analytical chemistry. Silver (Ag) nanostructures have the strongest SERS enhancement, but suffer from severe enhancement degradation induced by oxidation. Here, we introduce electrochemical reduction of silver oxide to produce Ag SERS substrates on request to partially circumvent the SERS enhancement degradation problem of Ag SERS substrates. Silver oxide nanostructures were first prepared in pure silver citrate aqueous solutions with controllable morphologies depending on the electrodeposition parameters. The transition process from silver oxide to Ag was investigated by density functional theory calculations. Based on the understanding of the transition mechanism, heating treatment, applying reducing agent, and electrochemical reduction were adopted to transform silver oxide to Ag. Notably, no organic agents were introduced neither in the electrodeposition of silver oxide nor electrochemical transformation of silver oxide to Ag. The electrochemical reduction strategy could produce Ag SERS substrates with a 'clean' surface with outstanding SERS performance in a simple as well as cost and time effective manner. Ag SERS substrates can be used in biomedical/biosensing fields. The approach through electrochemical reduction of silver oxide to generate Ag SERS substrate may push forward practical application process of Ag SERS substrates.

Abstract:This paper reports a high-yield synthesis of Ag nanospheres made up of primary nanoparticles. The size of the silver nanospheres can be controlled by changing the concentration of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) which acts as a stabilizer. In addition, the surface morphology of the nanospheres can be well controlled through controlling the shape of primary Ag nanoparticles by introducing a small quantity of ionic capping agents in the solution. Different surface morphologies of Ag nanospheres lead to different surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) properties. The SERS property of the nanospheres used as substrates is very sensitive to the nanoscale characteristics of the surfaces, and the nanospheres with sharp tips on their surface exhibit much better Raman scattering enhancement than non-agglomerated spherical Ag nanoparticles.

Abstract:Different types of silver nanostructures are synthesized via a solvothermal method by reducing silver nitrate with ethylene glycol using poly(vinylpyrrolidone) as an adsorbing agent and adding or without adding sodium chloride to the solution. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction spectra have been used to investigate the products. These nanostructures were evaluated as good surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates using rhodamine 6G molecules. Our results are helpful to understand the SERS mechanism.

Abstract:The Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect on the surface of metal conductors can significantly improve the sensitivity of molecular detection. Therefore, it is widely used in the field of chemical sensors. The nanostructure of the metal surface strongly influences the strength of the SEAS by adsorption and surface electric field. Herein, we combine microfluidic technology with electroless silver plating to produce hollow microspheres with different wall thicknesses. The microspheres have a diameter of 400 mu m and a spherical shell thickness of 40-100 mu m. The spherical shell has a porous structure formed by phase separation, on which nanosilver particles can be deposited. The silver-polymer hybrid microspheres can adsorb dyes in aqueous solution and produce significant SEAS effects, and the Raman signal enhancement factors can be up to 7.11 x 10(11). Computational simulations and experimental results show that the Raman enhancement effect is related to the distance between the silver particles on the surface and the hollow structure of the microspheres.

Abstract:Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction reveal that four different types of crystalline silver nanostructures including nanoparticles, nanowires, nanocubes, and bipyramids are synthesized by a solvothermal method by reducing silver nitrate with ethylene glycol using poly(vinylpyrrolidone) as an adsorption agent and adding different quantities of sodium chloride to the solution. These nanostructures which exhibit different surface plasma resonance properties in the ultraviolet–visible region are shown to be good surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates using rhodamine 6G molecules. Our results demonstrate that the silver nanocubes, bipyramids with sharp corners and edges, and aggregated silver nanoparticles possess better SERS properties than the silver nanowires, indicating that they can serve as high-sensitivity substrates in SERS-based measurements.

Abstract:Silver particles have been widely used in SERS detection as an enhancement substrate. The large-scale synthesis of Ag particles with controllable size and shape is still a challenge. We demonstrate a high-throughput method for the preparation of monodisperse submicron silver particles using S-shaped microfluidic chips. Submicron silver particles were prepared by a simplified reduction method. By adjusting the concentration of the reducing agent ascorbic acid and the stabilizer PVP, the particle size and morphology could be controlled, obtaining a size distribution of 1–1.2 μm for flower-like silver particles and a size distribution of 0.5–0.7 μm for quasi-spherical silver particles. This microfluidic system can be used to fabricate submicron silver particles on a large scale, continuously and stably, with a production efficiency of around 1.73 mg/min. The synthesized submicron silver particles could realize ultra-sensitive SERS detection, and the lowest concentration of rhodamine 6G (R6G) that could be detected was 10−9 M.

Abstract:A straightforward, mild and green chemistry process had been developed to synthesize well-defined spherical Ag/PS (polystyrene) hybrid materials by using nontoxic L-ascorbic acid as both reducing agent and capping agent. Negatively charged -SO3- could act as a linker between Ag+ ions (Ag nanoparticles) and polystyrene beads. The positively charged PS beads were also prepared by a grafting method, and silver nanoparticles deposition on positively charged and uncharged PS beads were also studied. The Ag nanoparticles were coated on the poly(styrene-co-sulfonic acid) beads via an in situ reduction method. The morphologies of the synthesis samples were investigated by field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), (high resolution) transmission electron microscopy (TEM, HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED). The results indicated that the reducing agent and electric charge had an important influence on the deposition of silver nanoparticles. As a potential application, the Ag/PS hybrid materials were embedded with the reporter molecule methylene blue (MB), and the signal intensity of the SERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering) tags could be enormously increased. So, the Ag/PS hybrid SERS tags can provide unique signal averaging for potentially quantitative analysis, which were used for SERS substrate design and SERS bioassays analysis. The facile and green chemistry preparation method might also provide a development direction to fabricate different nanometal/PS composites by the simple procedure.

Abstract:Through in-situ reduction of silver nitrate without using any coupling-agent, a substrate for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) was prepared by coating silver on hollow buoyant silica microspheres as a lab on a bubble (LoB). The silver coated LoBs (LoBs@Ag) floated on surface of a solution could provide a very convenient platform for the detection of target molecules in the solution. The LoBs@Ag substrate not only immobilized well-distributed Ag nanoparticles on the surface LoBs, but excluded the interference of coupling agents. This yielded high-resolution SERS spectra with excellent reproducibility. The adsorption of crystal violet (CV) on the LoBs@Ag substrate was investigated by means of SERS combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The LoBs@Ag substrate exhibited a remarkable Raman enhancement effect for CV with an enhancement factor of 6.9 × 10(8) and wide adaptability from dye, pesticide to bio-molecules. On the basis of this substrate, a simple and sensitive SERS method was proposed for the determination of trace organic pollutants or bio-molecules.
