Abstract:The continuous operation of Brillouin optical fiber distributed sensors requires the acquisition and processing of large amount of data that imposes ample pressure on the data acquisition systems and storage devices. To overcome such limitations, the compressed sensing (CS) method based on K-Singular value decomposition (K-SVD) algorithm as transform is proposed in this paper for the accurate extraction of sensing information with less data acquired from Brillouin optical fiber distributed sensors without the hardware modification. In such algorithm, the parameters of the K-SVD dictionary are selected first through simulation and the signals are sampled and reconstructed successfully. Then, we apply the regularized orthogonal matching pursuit (ROMP) reconstruction algorithm to effectively reconstruct the experimental data obtained with different sampling rates, frequency steps and test temperatures. We also compare the performances of the CS method based on K-SVD with that based on discrete cosine transform (DCT), discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and principle component analysis (PCA) as transforms. The experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively reconstruct the experimental signals with much reduced amount of data as compared to other methods. The proposed method also provides satisfactory measurement accuracy in extracting sensing information. Therefore, the K-SVD based CS method can be an attractive alternative to make Brillouin optical fiber distributed sensors more suitable for faster operation.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme for accelerated fast BOTDA. The effect of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) on recovery performance of compressed sensing is simulated and analyzed, it is found that a reduction in SNR requires much larger frequency data to recover the original Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS). To enable a high recovery probability, Block-Matching and 3D filtering (BM3D) algorithm is employed to enhance the SNR of Brillouin time trace and reduce the number of averages. Combining with a principal component analysis (PCA) based compressed sensing technique, the Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) can be successfully reconstructed from only 37.5% frequency data. In the experiment, 75 randomly selected frequency data is acquired to reconstruct the BGS. Distributed strain sensing is achieved over 15 km single-mode fiber with 3 m spatial resolution and 0.52 MHz Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) uncertainty. Due to the accelerated process, the measurement time with 40 averages is less than 0.5 s.

Abstract:We have experimentally investigated spatial-division multiplexed (SDM) Brillouin optical time-domain analysis in a heterogeneous multicore fiber whose central core and six outer cores are made from different preforms, showing a similar to 70 MHz Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) difference between them. It reveals that the heterogeneous central core and the outer cores have different temperature sensitivities, but their strain sensitivities are almost the same. By making use of the distinct temperature coefficients of these two kinds of cores, simultaneous and discriminative temperature and strain measurements are achieved. The bending-induced Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) broadening issue in off-center cores has been clarified, and a solution has been proposed to eliminate the uncertainty caused by a bending-induced BFS shift, by averaging the BFS variations of two symmetrical outer cores. We show a new perspective for discriminative measurement in Brillouin distributed sensors based on SDM solutions. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Transactions of the Institute of Measurement and Control, Ahead of Print. In this work, we propose an efficient reconstruction scheme for compressive sensing (CS) of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) spectrum. Taking advantage of the sparse reflection spectrum of the FBG array network, we have demonstrated the use of CS for compressing the spectrum at an excessively high compression factor up to 64. In addition to that, the spectral difference (SD) of the spectra is used to further enhance their sparsity for the CS model. In this investigation, four different configurations have been devised and tested to compare their performance and effectiveness. Configuration IV that is based on SD and deep neural network offers the best recovery performance. The proposed method is a potential tool for efficient data storage and transmission for FBG sensor network.

Abstract:As one of the most consolidated distributed fiber sensors based on stimulated Brillouin scattering, the Brillouin optical time-domain analyzer (BOTDA) has been developed for decades. Despite the commercial availability and outstanding progresses which has been achieved, the intrinsic Lorentzian gain spectrum restricts the sensing performance from possible further enhancements and hence limits the field of validity of the technique. In this paper, the novel method of engineering the gain spectral properties of the Brillouin scattering and its application on static and dynamic BOTDA sensors will be reviewed. Such a spectral property engineering has not only provided improvements to BOTDA, but also might open a new way to enhance the performance of all kinds of distributed Brillouin fiber sensors.

Abstract:Distributed optical fiber Brillouin sensors detect the temperature and strain along a fiber according to the local Brillouin frequency shift (BFS), which is usually calculated by the measured Brillouin spectrum using Lorentzian curve fitting. In addition, cross-correlation, principal component analysis, and machine learning methods have been proposed for the more efficient extraction of BFS. However, existing methods only process the Brillouin spectrum individually, ignoring the correlation in the time domain, indicating that there is still room for improvement. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a BFS extraction convolutional neural network (BFSCNN) to retrieve the distributed BFS directly from the measured two-dimensional data. Simulated ideal Brillouin spectra with various parameters are used to train the BFSCNN. Both the simulation and experimental results show that the extraction accuracy of the BFSCNN is better than that of the traditional curve fitting algorithm with a much shorter processing time. The BFSCNN has good universality and robustness and can effectively improve the performances of existing Brillouin sensors. © 2020 Chinese Laser Press

Abstract:The performance of post-processing techniques carried out on the Brillouin gain spectrum to estimate the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) in standard Brillouin distributed sensors is evaluated. Curve fitting methods with standard functions such as polynomial and Lorentzian, as well as correlation techniques such as Lorentzian Cross-correlation and Cross Reference Plot Analysis (CRPA), are considered for the analysis. The fitting procedures and key parameters for each technique are optimized, and the performance in terms of BFS uncertainty, BFS offset error and processing time is compared by numerical simulations and through controlled experiments. Such a quantitative comparison is performed in varying conditions including signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), frequency measurement step, and BGS truncation. It is demonstrated that the Lorentzian cross-correlation technique results in the largest BFS offset error due to truncation, while exhibiting the smallest BFS uncertainty and the shortest processing time. A novel approach is proposed to compensate such a BFS offset error, which enables the Lorentzian cross-correlation technique to completely outperform other fitting methods.

Abstract:We theoretically analyze and experimentally demonstrate broadband Brillouin slow light using multiple equal-amplitude spectral lines generated by multifrequency phase modulation, The theoretical analysis shows that 4n-1 equal-amplitude spectral lines can be obtained if the modulation signal comprises the fundamental frequency and the odd harmonic waves, where n denotes the number of frequency components in the modulation signal. In experiment, 7 and 11 equal-amplitude spectral lines are obtained and Brillouin bandwidths of 340 and 570 MHz are gained, respectively. The experimental results also indicate that the slope of the broadening factor for the delayed signal decreases in the case of broad and flattened Brillouin gain spectrum. Abstract:We demonstrate a method for fast and precise Brillouin frequency shift measurement based on searching for the zero-crossing point of a virtually composed spectra of Brillouin gain and loss, obtained by dual-frequency probe beam. Simulations and experiments show that searching for the zero-crossing point of virtually synthesized Brillouin gain spectrum can be easily done without a large error compared with the peak search of Brillouin gain spectrum in the conventional method.

Abstract:Distributed sensor based on stimulated Brillouin scattering, especially Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) technique, attracts much interest recently due to its good performance of long sensing distance and high precision. In BOTDA system, the frequency fluctuation of the light sources is a serious problem, which will cause severe error of the measured Brillouin frequency shift (BFS), considering the narrow bandwidth of Brillouin spectrum. In this paper, a simple and low-cost method to compensate the error induced by frequency fluctuations of laser sources in a BOTDA system is proposed, by use of a local reference fiber which is loose and temperature monitored. The reference fiber, with several ten-meters long, can be part of the sensing fiber. Referring to the measured BFS of the reference fiber, one can obtain the errors induced by frequency fluctuations of light sources, and thus eliminate those errors. The proposed method is demonstrated by preliminary experiment.

Abstract:We have proposed and demonstrated an enhanced Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) sensing system with fast measurement speed based on the Brillouin phase recovery using Kramers-Kronig (KK) relation. The non-Lorentz Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) and Brillouin phase spectrum (BPS) measured by BOTDA are theoretically validated to satisfy KK relation and hence the BPS is digitally recovered by performing Hilbert Transform (HT) to the measured BGS. The recovery of the whole BPS along the 45km fiber only consumes 0.3s. Both simulation and experiment have been carried out to analyze the quality of the recovered BPS under various conditions. By making use of the excellent linearity of the recovered BPS, we accelerate the data processing speed by three times through Linear Fitting (LF) of BPS, without compromise of the sensing accuracy. With implementation of simple HT and LF, this scheme does not need modification of the BOTDA setup and complicated data processing algorithm, which would be a practical way for applications where fast measurement speed is needed, especially in long-distance and high-spatial resolution sensing.

Abstract:Distributed optical fiber Brillouin sensors can monitor the temperature and strain along a fiber by estimating the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) according to the measured Brillouin spectrum. The system performance is highly dependent on the algorithm of BFS extraction. The well-established Lorentz curve fitting (LCF) method is generally employed because the Brillouin spectrum theoretically satisfies a Lorentz shape. Recently, machine-learning methods have been proposed for more effective BFS extraction, but they have some drawbacks and limitations. The machine-learning algorithms require a large amount of data and high computing power to find suitable extraction methods. However, with prior knowledge, Brillouin spectrum can be treated as a regular signal that requires only three degrees of freedom to define. The unique sparsity characteristics of Brillouin spectrum have not been well studied or exploited. In this paper, we propose a sparse representation method for Brillouin spectrum that extracts three sparse features of the Brillouin spectrum through the dictionary-learning algorithm (K-means singular value decomposition). The correlation between the sparse coefficient and the BFS is experimentally calibrated and verified. The accuracy of the proposed algorithm is comparable to that of LCF, and its processing is six times faster. This sparse representation method for Brillouin spectra is promising as an alternative universal BFS extraction method for distributed Brillouin sensors.

Abstract:In this Letter, we present a novel structure to realize photonics-assisted compressive sensing (CS) with optical integration. In the system, a spectrally sparse signal modulates a multiwavelength continuous-wave light and then is mixed with a random sequence in optical domain. The optical signal passes through a length of dispersive fiber, the dispersion amount of which is set to ensure that the group delay between the adjacent wavelength channels is equal to the bit duration of the applied random sequence. As a result, the detected signal is a delay-and-sum version of the randomly mixed signal, which is equivalent to the function of integration required in CS. A proof-of-concept experiment with four wavelengths, corresponding to a compression factor of 4, is demonstrated. More simulation results are also given to show the potential of the technique. Abstract:Abstract This paper reviews the recent advances on the high-performance distributed Brillouin optical fiber sensing, which include the conventional distributed Brillouin optical fiber sensing based on backward stimulated Brillouin scattering and two other novel distributed sensing mechanisms based on Brillouin dynamic grating and forward stimulated Brillouin scattering, respectively. As for the conventional distributed Brillouin optical fiber sensing, the spatial resolution has been improved from meter to centimeter in the time-domain scheme and to millimeter in the correlation-domain scheme, respectively; the measurement time has been reduced from minute to millisecond and even to microsecond; the sensing range has reached more than 100 km. Brillouin dynamic grating can be used to measure the birefringence of a polarization-maintaining fiber, which has been explored to realize distributed measurement of temperature, strain, salinity, static pressure, and transverse pressure. More recently, forward stimulated Brillouin scattering has gained considerable interest because of its capacity to detect mechanical features of materials surrounding the optical fiber, and remarkable works using ingenious schemes have managed to realize distributed measurement, which opens a brand-new way to achieve position-resolved substance identification.

Abstract:A distributed Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) sensor enhanced by forward stimulatedBrillouin scattering (FSBS) based distributed Brillouin amplification (DBA) was proposed andpresented. Due to co-propagating of pump and Stokes lights, the Stokes pulse is effectivelyamplified in front segment of fiber, resulting in flatter gain distribution. As a proof-of-concept,FSBS-DBA based BOTDA sensing with distance of ∼74.2 km, Brillouin frequency shift standard deviationof less than ∼2 MHz and spatial resolution of ∼10 m was demonstrated. This method is compatible andcomplementary with backward SBS-based DBA, and features better pumping efficiency than Ramanamplification.

Abstract:Abstract We report in this paper the simulation analysis on the simultaneous deployment of Brillouin gain and Brillouin loss in the Golay coded phase-shift pulse Brillouin optical time domain analysis (PSP-BOTDA) fiber optic sensor for improving the sensing distance and at the same time obtaining high spatial resolution measurement. In this technique, the Golay coded pump pulse is alternately frequency modulated for the purpose of generating Stokes and Anti-Stokes scattering. The technique also modulates the coded pump with the return-to-zero (RZ) formats. Simulation analysis has revealed that the simultaneous use of Brillouin gain- and loss and the pulse coding technique in the PSP-BOTDA has improved the dynamic sensing range and the signal-to-noise improvement ratio (SNIR) of the sensor. By performing simulation over 500 m of fiber, we have also successfully demonstrated 10-cm of high spatial resolution measurement with the use of 1ns of coded pulse duration.
Novel scanning method for distortion-free BOTDA measurements

Abstract:Systematic errors induced by distortions in the pump pulse of conventional Brillouin distributed fiber sensors are thoroughly investigated. Experimental results, supported by a theoretical analysis, demonstrate that the two probe sidebands in standard Brillouin optical time-domain analyzers provide a non-zero net gain on the pump pulse, inducing severe distortions of the pump when scanning the pump-probe frequency offset, especially at high probe power levels. Compared to the impact of non-local effects reported in the state-of-the-art, measurements here indicate that for probe powers in the mW range (below the onset of amplified spontaneous Brillouin scattering), the obtained gain and loss spectra show two strong side-lobes that lead to significant strain/temperature errors. This phenomenon is not related to the well-known spectral hole burning resulting from pump depletion, but it is strictly related to the temporal and spectral distortions that the pump pulse experiences when scanning the Brillouin gain/loss spectrum. As a solution to this problem, a novel scanning scheme for Brillouin sensing is proposed. The method relies on a fixed frequency separation between the two probe sidebands, so that a flat zero net gain is achieved on the pump pulse when scanning the pump-probe frequency offset. The proposed technique is experimentally validated, demonstrating its ability to completely cancel out non-local effects up to a probe power ultimately limited by the onset of amplified spontaneous Brillouin scattering. The method allows for one order of magnitude improvement in the figure-of-merit of optimized long-range Brillouin distributed fiber sensors, enabling measurements along a 100 km-long sensing fiber with 2 m spatial resolution and with no need of added features for performance enhancement.
