Abstract:Energy, exergy, environment, and economic analysis of an externally preheated multi-effect mechanical vapor compression desalination system, (ME-MVC) coupled with photovoltaic/thermal collectors (PVT) is conducted. Four arrangements of inlet feed to the ME-MVC are tested and compared: forward (FF), parallel (PF), parallel/cross (PCF), and backward (BF). A complete steady-state system mathematical model is constructed, solved numerically, programmed inside MATLAB, and validated. The four system's performance is compared with a single effect MVC system (SE-MVC) powered by PV panels. Results show that Modifying ME-MVC to be externally preheated reduces electricity consumption on account of low-grade thermal energy. PF and PCF have a wider range of design conditions where PVT is applicable compared to BF and FF, especially at a higher number of effects. PVT/ME-MVC in PCF and PF is the best in performance followed by BF and FF while PV/SE-MVC is the lowest. The systems in PF and PCF have the lowest collectors' surface area per unit of distillate produced, 6.58 m2/(m3/d), The figure for PV/SE-MVC is 8.59 m2/(m3/d). FF system has the lowest unit water cost at 5.32 /m3. The proposed PVT/ME-MVC system succeeds in; reducing the required collector surface area, increasing exergetic efficiency, and reducing the required battery capacity compared to previous solar thermal distillation systems. Moreover, the system carbon mitigation is 62.65 and 60.68 tons/year for electrical and thermal power savings while PV/SE-MVC mitigation is 76.03 tons/year.
