Abstract:Soils are inherently anisotropic, which may significantly influence their mechanical behavior and the performance of related geostructures. In this study, the response of strip footing on anisotropic sand was investigated using a J2-type deformation model coupled with state-dependent dilatancy and fabric evolution. The capability of the model was validated by simulating several element tests and a centrifuge test of strip footing. Footing tests with varying fabric orientations and relative densities were numerically simulated, revealing the influence of fabric anisotropy on the bearing capacity and its mobilization mechanism. Additionally, the effect of fabric on the failure mode of strip footing, including the pattern of the shear band, displacement field within the sand mass, and progressive failure characteristics, was also investigated. The simulation results obtained using an isotropic model indicate that neglecting the fabric anisotropy may cause severe overestimation of the bearing capacity of the strip footing.
Failure Mechanisms of Sand under Asymmetrical Cyclic Loading Conditions: Experimental Observation and Constitutive Modelling

Abstract:In practical engineering, natural soil deposits often sustain an initial driving force prior to cyclic shear, owing to earthquakes, traffic and waves; such asymmetrical loading conditions may significantly affect the liquefaction susceptibility and failure mechanism of sand. To understand the typical cyclic liquefaction responses, comprehensive asymmetrical cyclic loading tests were conducted on sand samples subjected to either compressional or extensional static stress. The results indicated that different stress conditions can result in three distinct failure mechanisms: flow liquefaction, cyclic mobility and residual deformation accumulation. According to the experimental observations, an anisotropic sand model was developed within the framework of the anisotropic critical state theory. The model employed a fabric-dependent dilatancy, and accounted for the effects of the fabric evolution and accumulated loading index on the plastic hardening, in order to better reflect the cyclic degradation of the plastic modulus. The predictive capacity of the model was confirmed through undrained monotonic test results for samples with different densities. Comparisons between the model responses and experimental results indicated the excellent capabilities of the developed model in terms of capturing the typical deformation, strength and fabric characteristics of different cyclic failure mechanisms of sand under either symmetrical or asymmetrical loading conditions.
A Multiscale Investigation of Strain Localization in Cohesionless Sand

Abstract:We develop a hybrid finite-discrete element method (FEM/DEM) multiscale framework to model strain localization in cohesionless sand. This framework takes advantage of a hierarchical solution structure based on the two numerical techniques, by modeling the material as a continuum at large using FEM and deriving the material point response of the FEM mesh from a DEM assembly attached to each integration point. In doing so, the phenomenological assumptions on the macroscopic constitutive law in conventional continuum modeling can be naturally bypassed. We demonstrate the predictive capability of the model by simulating a biaxial compression test on sand where strain localization is observed. The influences of different boundary conditions on the shear band pattern are examined.

Abstract:We propose a hierarchical multiscale modeling approach to simulate the hydro-mechanical coupling behavior in saturated high-porosity sandstone, with a particular focus on the occurrence and transition of compaction bands. In this multiscale approach, we use the finite element method (FEM) to solve the global boundary value problem for a sandstone, and the discrete element method (DEM) to solve the local representative volume elements (RVEs) embedded at the Gauss integration points of the FE mesh to provide the effective material constitutive responses required for FEM. The global governing equations for a coupled hydro-mechanical problem are solved with the standard u–p formulation, where the total stress is decomposed into the pore pressure and the effective stress which is directly derivable from the DEM solution of the RVEs, according to the seminal Terzaghi's effective stress principle. By choosing proper RVEs to represent the typical microstructure of high-porosity sandstone, we perform both drained and undrained simulations on saturated sandstone specimens to examine localized compactive failures developed therein. We identify that both mean effective stress and porosity control critically the initiation and development of failure modes in sandstone. Under undrained shear, our simulations show that a sandstone specimen may first develop a compaction band followed by a gradual transition to a shear-enhanced compaction band and even shear band, with the build-up of excessive pore pressure and hence drop of mean effective stress. In the specimen, regions experiencing localized volumetric contraction show relatively higher pore pressure than other regions and act as the source of flux flow. The Darcy flux peaks during the formation of compaction band and decreases gradually in the following stages. To distinguish the different failure stages with distinct physical attributes, the ratio of deviatoric strain to volumetric strain is adopted as a useful indicator signifying the underlying microstructural mechanisms for different deformation bands. This study signifies the importance of considering pore pressure and mean effective stress in fluid-involved engineering operations, e.g. aquifer management, hydrocarbon extraction and CO2 geological sequestration.
Multiscale Insights into Borehole Instabilities in High‐Porosity Sandstones

Abstract:This paper presents a multiscale analysis of the classical borehole instability problem in high‐porosity sandstones using a hierarchical multiscale approach. A rigorous, two‐way message‐passing coupling of finite element method and discrete element method is employed, where the finite element method is employed to solve a boundary value problem and the constitutive material responses required at each of its integration points are derived by the discrete element method solution to an embedded representative volume element instead of by using an assumed phenomenological model. We employ this multiscale approach to examine the successive failure of a borehole subjected to gradually decreased support stresses at the inner borehole wall or increased far‐field stresses. To reproduce the material behavior of high‐porosity sandstone, representative volume elements with a high‐porosity structure and interparticle bonds are generated. It is found that stress concentration triggers the initial failure at the borehole wall, and the subsequent failure in form of deformation bands is driven by further stress concentration ahead of the band tips. The failure pattern around the borehole varies with initial stress state and global loading path. The comparison of the local stress paths of the initial failure points in various cases reveals that the change of failure pattern from shear failure to mixed‐mode failure and to compaction failure is dominated by the increased mean stress. Cross‐scale parametric studies show that the failure mode changes from clear compaction bands to multiple arrays of shear bands by changing the high‐porosity specimen to a low‐porosity one. The increase in cohesion strength expands the yield locus and enlarges the critical mean stress between different failure patterns. Hence, the failure mode may change from compaction failure to mixed‐mode failure or from mixed‐mode failure to shear failure due purely to the increased cohesion strength. The qualitative comparisons indicate greater length, larger area, and more severe damage of the diametrically opposite failure with the increase in minor principal stress σ0 and principal stress ratio. The diametrically opposite failure mode is found a good indicator for σ0 direction, but it may also occur under hydrostatic far‐field stress due to material anisotropy.

Abstract:The challenges of predicting the stresses acting around piles driven in sand limits meaningful analysis of their single and group loading responses, aging processes and scale/in-situ stress level dependency. Benchmark local stresses measurements made in the sand mass and pile shaft in Calibration Chamber (CC) models show that sharply different regimes act when the pile is either penetrating or temporarily stationary. This paper presents an Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) finite element simulation of installation into dense sand, highlighting the stress changes developed between intermittent penetration stages and exploring the effects of initial stress level. The installation by cyclic jacking of closed-ended model piles studied in a highly-instrumented CC experiments is simulated with a state-dependent Mohr–Coulomb model calibrated to high-quality element tests on the sand employed. The predicted pile head loads and local stresses are compared with the CC experiments, showing generally good agreement over the lower parts of the pile shaft while also matching key field-scale trends from CPT-based practical design approaches. More advanced constitutive modeling appears necessary to eliminate discrepancies noted over the higher shaft levels, which may be linked to currently neglected aspects of the sands’ highly non-linear behavior, including grain crushing and hysteresis under cyclic loading.
A Simple Multiscale Model for Granular Soils with Geosynthetic Inclusion

Abstract:Due to the heterogeneity and anisotropy caused by geosynthetic inclusions, the design of geosynthetic-reinforced geostructures has been largely empirically-based. The presence of geosynthetic reinforcement complicates the stress history and fabric characteristics of the reinforced soil, posing an obstacle to the development of constitutive models for geosynthetic-reinforced soils. To circumvent this difficulty, we employ a simple multiscale model based on a coupled FEM/DEM approach. The displacement in granular soil domain is solved in the hierarchical multiscale framework, while the geosynthetic inclusion that prescribes the boundary conditions are modeled concurrently by discrete bar elements. The responses of both multiscale domains are communicated and updated in an explicit time integration scheme. The main objective in this work is to extend the existing multiscale framework for modeling soil-geosynthetic interactions. The predicative capacity of this model is examined in two numerical examples, i.e., shape-forming and pull-out tests. The multiscale characters of the response of geosynthetic-reinforced soil facilitate a better understanding of the reinforcement mechanisms.

Abstract:Computational modeling in geotechnical engineering frequently needs sophisticated constitutive models to describe prismatic behavior of geomaterials subjected to complex loading conditions, and meanwhile faces challenges to tackle large deformation in many geotechnical problems. The study presents a multiscale approach to address both challenges based on a hierarchical coupling of the smoothed particle finite element method (SPFEM) and the discrete element method (DEM) (coined SPFEM/DEM). In the approach, SPFEM serves as a solver for the global boundary value problem, in which the material constitutive responses are derived from the DEM solution of representative volume elements (RVEs) attached to the SPFEM nodes to avoid phenomenological constitutive assumptions. The approach is capable of modeling large deformation because of use of SPFEM, which discretizes the domain with a set of Lagrangian nodes and employs Delaunay triangulation for efficient remeshing on the nodes. In addition, as the RVEs are associated with the nodes due to the nodal integration technique in SPFEM, the interpolation of RVEs from the old mesh to the new one is bypassed, which is otherwise infeasible. The smoothing operation in nodal integration further offers a remedy for regularizing mesh dependency in simulation of strain localization problems. Two examples, namely, general failure of a footing and flow of an unstable slope, are used to demonstrate the potential of the proposed method in solving large deformation and providing reliable predictions on collapse and failure of geotechnical problems.
Quantifying and Modelling Fabric Anisotropy of Granular Soils

Abstract:This paper describes an integrated study of the effects of fabric anisotropy on granular soil response, in which the microscopic measurements are properly linked with the macroscopic modelling. Using an image-analysis-based technique and an appropriate mathematical approach, the inherent fabrics of sand specimens prepared in the laboratory using different sample preparation methods were measured, quantified and compared at a microscale level. It was found that the specimen prepared by the dry deposition method had a more anisotropic microstructure than the specimen prepared using the moist tamping method, which is considered directly associated with the experimental observation that different sample preparation methods produce samples with distinctive responses under otherwise identical conditions. An existing platform model was then extended so that the combined effects of initial fabric and shear mode dependence were accounted for in a simple yet rational manner. To calibrate and verify the model, a series of laboratory tests was conducted for Toyoura sand under various combinations of loading and sample preparation conditions. It is shown that the model is capable of simulating in a unified manner the experimental results reflecting the combined effects of sample preparation methods, loading paths, soil densities and confining pressures.

Abstract:Multidirectional shearing involves shear stress changes in both magnitude and direction. When subjected to multidirectional shearing, soils exhibit complex responses that are significantly different from those under unidirectional shearing. A sophisticated constitutive model is required to realistically predict soil behaviors under multidirectional shearing conditions. In this study, the performance of a hypoplastic model with intergranular strain for simulating the sand response under multidirectional cyclic shearing is evaluated. To improve the simulative capability of the model for multidirectional shearing, two major modifications are made. First, the model is extended to account for the fabric change effect, enabling a satisfactory simulation of the effective stress reduction under undrained cyclic loading. Second, a new unloading criterion is incorporated based on a bounding surface concept, aiming to resolve the limitation of the rapid buildup of pore pressure in the original model under multidirectional shearing. The significance of these modifications is illustrated by comparing simulations with and without them.

Abstract:This paper presents a multishear bounding surface model for sands that considers evolving fabric anisotropy. The model is formulated by decomposing the overall response into a macro volumetric response and a set of spatially distributed micro shear responses. The micro stress–strain and stress–dilatancy relationships are defined for each direction of the micro shear structure. The evolving fabric tensor and anisotropic state parameter are used to characterize changes in the anisotropic structure and to satisfy the anisotropic critical state theory. The model performance is validated by the test data under different confining pressures, densities, loading modes, and loading directions.

Abstract:A multiscale approach [1] that couples the finite-element method (FEM) and the discrete-element method (DEM) is employed to model and analyse the earthquake fault rupture-soil-foundation interaction (FR-SFI) problem.In the approach, the soil constitutive responses are obtained from DEM solutions of representative volume elements (RVEs) embedded at the FEM integration points so as to effectively bypass the phenomenological hypotheses in conventional FEM simulations.The fault rupture surfaces and shear localization patterns under normal faults with or without foundation atop have been well captured by the multiscale approach and verified with available centrifuge experimental [2] and numerical results [3].By examining the responses and microstructural evolutions of local RVE packings, it is found that the RVEs located in-or outside the shear bands behave distinctly, and may change their stress states from initial at-rest to active in the normal fault case.The micromechanics study also sheds lights on the capability of heavy foundations in protecting the superstructure as a result of rupture surface diversion.

Abstract:Within the multimechanism framework, a micromechanics-based sand model is presented based upon the bounding surface and critical state theories. This model follows the assumption that the macroscopic responses of sands can be determined by summing the contributions from a macroscopic volumetric mechanism and an infinite number of virtual microscopic shear mechanisms in various orientations. Each virtual shear mechanism characterizes the microscopic shear deformations and the dilatancy-induced volumetric deformations in three mutually perpendicular directions. The deformations in each direction are described by using a microscopic shear stress–strain relationship founded upon the bounding surface theory and a microscopic stress–dilatancy relationship, respectively. The shear strength with the SMP yield criterion and the stress–dilatancy relationship introduce a state variable for compatibility with the critical state theory. The correlations between the microscopic and macroscopic model parameters are established, and most of them are defined by soil parameters with a clear physical meaning. With a spatial distribution of microscopic shear mechanisms, the model can intrinsically consider the stress-induced anisotropy, the non-coaxial behaviour of stress and strain increment in their principal directions, and the effect induced by principal stress rotations without requiring additional model parameters. The comparison of the simulated and experimental results indicates its excellent capability in predicting sand responses in stress–strain curve as well as stress path under different drainage and loading conditions.

Abstract:The failure of marine structures is often attributed to liquefaction in loose sand deposits that are subjected to ocean waves. In this study, a two-dimensional integrated numerical model is developed to characterize the liquefaction behaviours of loosely deposited seabed foundations under various types of ocean waves. In the present model, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are used to simulate the surface wave motion, and Biot's consolidation equations are used to link the solid-pore fluid interactions in a porous medium. A poro-elasto-plastic solution is used to reproduce foundation behaviour under cyclic shearing. Unlike previous investigations, both oscillatory and residual soil responses were considered; they are coupled in an instantaneous approach. Verification of the model results to the previous centrifugal wave tests is carried out, obtaining fairly good agreement. Numerical examples show that foundation behaviour under various types of wave loading, particularly standing waves or a solitary wave, embodies a completely two-dimensional process in terms of residual pore pressure development. The parametric studies demonstrate that liquefaction caused by the build-up of pore pressures is more likely to occur in loosely deposited sand foundations with poor drainage and under large waves. Abstract:The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of the anisotropic variability in soil on the failure mechanism and the ultimate bearing capacity of foundations that are placed near slopes. A random adaptive finite-element limit analysis (RAFELA) with anisotropic random field modeling and the Monte Carlo simulation technique are combined. The stochastic ultimate bearing capacity for various undrained shear strengths, slope angles, normalized slope heights, distances from the slope crest, and horizontal and vertical correlation distances are analyzed. The quantitative identification and characterization of failure mechanisms, which are determined by the failure slip and passive wedge contribution, are achieved through the digital image processing of realizations from anisotropic random soil. This study showcases the diverse failure mechanisms and sliding surface sizes that arise from distinct soil patterns, which are influenced by alterations in slope geometry and soil anisotropic spatial variability. The quantitative findings highlight that alterations in failure mechanisms and slip surface sizes lead to heightened failure probabilities and significant variations in bearing capacity.

Abstract:ABSTRACT With the acceleration of urbanization, the stability of the foundation is being more crucial to the performance and service of the superstructure. As our understanding of the factors influencing soil's physical and mechanical behavior deepens, it becomes increasingly challenging for traditional limit equilibrium and limit analysis methods to accurately consider the complex factors affecting foundation stability, such as initial fabric anisotropy caused by the particle morphology and geological deposition in sand. Although some scholars had used advanced constitutive models in the finite element method (FEM) to investigate the influence of initial fabric anisotropy on mechanical responses of foundations, this approach failed to reveal the microscopic information underlying the shear failure of sandy soil foundations. In this study, the influence of the initial fabric anisotropy of sandy soil on the ultimate bearing capacity and shear failure mode of shallow foundation is studied using the hierarchical FEM and discrete element method (DEM) coupling analysis method. Four representative volume elements (RVEs) with varying initial bedding plane angles are constructed in DEM for characterizing different initial fabric anisotropies, and the specific stress–strain information of DEM RVEs is directly passed into the corresponding Gauss points in FEM to replace the conventional constitutive model. Numerical results show that the initial fabric anisotropy affects the ultimate bearing capacity and shear failure mode of shallow foundations significantly, and the corresponding micromechanical behaviors at different local Gauss points have been explored, which advances our understanding of the micromechanisms underlying the progressive shear failure of sandy soil foundations significantly.

Abstract:The footing-on-slope system is very complicated since it is governed, in part, by both the bearing capacity and slope stability. The material point method (MPM), which is specifically suitable for large deformation problems, is utilized to analyze the failure mechanism of the footing-on-slope system. The reliability of the MPM in predicting bearing capacity and identifying failure modes is validated using the published results in the literature. The results show that an increase in the setback distance, cohesion, and friction angle causes a linear increase in bearing capacity, while the bearing capacity decreases with an increasing slope angle. When the footing is sufficiently far from the slope, its response is similar to that of a footing located on horizontal ground. The critical setback distance ratio increases from 3 to 8 as the slope angle varies from 15° to 75°, and it is mainly affected by the friction angle rather than the cohesion. Four distinct failure modes of the footing-on-slope system are identified based on the setback distance and slope angle. A transitional failure mode is identified as a combination of foundation failure and slope instability. Empirical relationships between the setback distance and slope angle are established, enabling the prediction of the reduction factor of the bearing capacity. Finally, a failure mode classification system of strip footings on slopes is proposed, which may provide practitioners with guidelines for designing footing-on-slope systems.

Abstract:SummaryWe pay a revisit to some classical geomechanics problems using a novel computational multiscale modelling approach. The multiscale approach employs a hierarchical coupling of the finite element method (FEM) and the discrete element method. It solves a boundary value problem at the continuum scale by FEM and derives the material point response from the discrete element method simulation attached to each Gauss point of the FEM mesh. The multiscale modelling framework not only helps successfully bypass phenomenological constitutive assumptions as required in conventional modelling approaches but also facilitates effective cross‐scale interpretation and understanding of soil behaviour. We examine the classical retaining wall and footing problems by this method and demonstrate that the simulating results can be well validated and verified by their analytical solutions. Furthermore, the study sheds novel multiscale insights into these classical problems and offers a new tool for geotechnical engineers to design and analyse geotechnical applications based directly upon particle‐level information of soils. Abstract:<span>This paper presents a multiscale approach to analyse the seismic response of a spread-footing system founded on saturated granular soil deposits that might be susceptible to liquefaction. The pore-fluid is idealised as a continuum by using a homogenised form of Navier-Stokes equations that accounts for the presence of the solid particles. These particles are modelled at a microscale using the discrete element method. The foundation is idealised as a square rigid block by generating a group of glued particles. Computational simulations were conducted to investigate the response of spread-footings on saturated deposits when subjected to a seismic excitation. For the considered closely-spaced foundation system, it is possible to have a foundation settlement smaller than the free-field. Stress overlap between neighbouring footings could lead to an increase in soil stiffness and less susceptibility to pore-pressure build-up and volume decrease compared with the free-field. The majority of the foundation settlement occurs during shaking, whereas settlement continues to accumulate post shaking in the free-field. Evaluation of the contribution of base and lateral walls of the foundation to the lateral response of the footing showed that the predominant contributors were the base shear force and walls normal to the direction of shaking.</span>
Quantitative bearing capacity assessment of strip footings adjacent to two-layered slopes considering spatial soil variability

Abstract:The probabilistic bearing capacity of the strip footing placed near a two-layered cohesive soil slope is evaluated using random adaptive finite element limit analysis with anisotropic random field modeling and Monte Carlo simulation techniques. To account for the combined effect of geometric parameters (i.e., normalized slope heights, and slope angles), soil properties (i.e., ratio of undrained shear strength from two-layer soils) and spatially variable strengths of two-layered soil, the bearing capacity is quantitatively examined in stochastic analysis. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis is exhibited, and the optimal layout of footings near a two-layered slope is estimated through a multivariate adaptive regression splines procedure. The associated results demonstrate that the slope angle has the most significant impact on the mean bearing capacity, while the coefficient of variation of the ultimate bearing capacity factor could be greatly reduced by decreasing the variability of the upper layer soil. The interaction effects between these influencing factors are numerically investigated. This study highlights the prominent role of the variability in lower layer soil when the coupled influence of geometric conditions and soil properties is considered.
