Abstract:We demonstrate dispersive optical phased arrays based on the Si3N4-on-Si platform. Two-dimensional beam steering across a 45.6 °× 10 °FOV with a beam width of 1.45 °× 0.032 °is achieved by wavelength tuning alone. Besides, FMCW ranging operation at a target distance of 10 m are experimentally performed.

Abstract:A polarized high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) based on a field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI) is developed in Zhejiang University, China, which is intended to profile various atmospheric aerosol optical properties simultaneously, such as the backscatter coefficient, the extinction coefficient, depolarization ratio, lidar ratio, etc. Due to the enlarged field-of-view (FOV) of the FWMI spectroscopic filter compared with the conventional Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) filter, we can expand the angular acceptable angle of the HSRL system to about 1 degree yet without any degradation of the spectral discrimination, enhancing the photon efficiency considerably. In this paper, we describe the developed FWMI-based polarized HSRL system comprehensively. The instrument configuration parameters and overall systematic structure are first presented. Then the FWMI subsystem, as the core apparatus of this HSRL, is particularly focused on. Instrumental calibration approach and the data retrieval are also discussed in detail. To our knowledge, this HSRL system is the first new generation of lidar which employs the FWMI spectroscopic filter in China, and great potential will be shown with the gradually improved engineering design in near future.

Abstract:A field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI) is developed to act as the spectral discriminator in high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL). This realization is motivated by the wide-angle Michelson interferometer (WAMI) which has been used broadly in the atmospheric wind and temperature detection. This paper describes an independent theoretical framework about the application of the FWMI in HSRL for the first time. In the framework, the operation principles and application requirements of the FWMI are discussed in comparison with that of the WAMI. Theoretical foundations for designing this type of interferometer are introduced based on these comparisons. Moreover, a general performance estimation model for the FWMI is established, which can provide common guidelines for the performance budget and evaluation of the FWMI in the both design and operation stages. Examples incorporating many practical imperfections or conditions that may degrade the performance of the FWMI are given to illustrate the implementation of the modeling. This theoretical framework presents a complete and powerful tool for solving most of theoretical or engineering problems encountered in the FWMI application, including the designing, parameter calibration, prior performance budget, posterior performance estimation, and so on. It will be a valuable contribution to the lidar community to develop a new generation of HSRLs based on the FWMI spectroscopic filter.

Abstract:We address design of the interferometric spectral discrimination (ISD) filters for a specific three-wavelength high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) in this paper. Taking into account the strong dependence of the transmittance of the ISD filters on the incident angle of light ray, the optical path of the receiving channel with an ISD filter in HSRL is analyzed. We derive the lidar equation with the angular distribution of backscatter signal, through which Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are then carried out to obtain the optimal parameters of the ISD filters for the HSRL at 1064 nm, 532 nm and 355 nm, respectively. Comparing the retrieval errors of the MC simulations based on different ISD filters, the configuration and parameters of the best ISD filter at each wavelength are determined. This paper can be employed as a theoretical guidance during the design of a three-wavelength HSRL with ISD filters.

Abstract:We propose and develop a field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI) system to act as a new type of spectroscopic filter in HSRL application. Due to the field widening characteristic, the FWMI can allow relatively large off-axis incident angle, and can be designed to any desirable wavelength. The theoretical foundations of the FWMI are introduced in this paper, and the developed prototype interferometer is described. It consists of a solid arm made of the glass H-ZF52 with the dimension of 37.876 mm, and an air gap with the length of 20.382 mm. These two interference arms are connected to a cube beam splitter to constitute a Michelson interferometer. Due to the matched dimensions and refractive indices of the two arms, the experimental testing results show that the OPD variation of the developed FWMI is about 0.04 lambda and the RMS is less than 0.008 lambda when the incident angle is as much as 1.5 degree (half angle). The cumulative wavefront distortion caused by the FWMI is less than 0.1 lambda PV value and 0.02 lambda RMS value. To lock the filtering frequency of the FWMI to the laser transmitter, a frequency locking system, which is actually an electro-optic feedback loop, is established. The setup and principle of this frequency locking system are also described in detail. Good locking accuracy of the FWMI about 27MHz is demonstrated through the frequency locking technique. All these results validate the feasibility of this developed FWMI system as a spectroscopic filter of an HSRL.

Abstract:We demonstrate a fully solid-state beam scanner that incorporates a Si3N4 photonic integrated switch array, a collimator lens, and a lithographically patterned diffraction grating. The off-chip components enable nearly circular output beams under the reduced system complexity. By manipulating the optical switch array and tuning the input wavelength, two-dimensional beam steering with $32\times23$ = 736 resolvable spots across a $14.3^{\circ }\times 9.9^{\circ }$ field of view (FOV) is realized. Furthermore, the coherent ranging within 18 m is demonstrated experimentally by utilizing the triangular frequency modulation. The tested results validate the feasibility of the proposed beam scanner, which might offer a flexible, scalable, and easily-implemented solution for the solid-state frequency modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR.

Abstract:Standard backscatter lidars encounter problems when solving the two unknowns (aerosol backscatter coefficient and extinction coefficient) from the only one recorded lidar equation. With the help of the high-spectral-resolution filter, high spectral resolution lidars (HSRLs) can provide unambiguous retrieval without critical assumptions. Spectral discrimination between scattering from molecules and aerosols or cloud particles is the basis of the HSRL technique, and several lidar approaches have been developed to obtain this discrimination. Iodine cell filter, which is a kind of atomic/molecular absorption filter, is robust, stable, and can achieve very good separation of aerosol Mie scattering from atmosphere molecular Cabannes scattering. However, absorption filters are lossy and gaseous absorption lines do not exist at many convenient laser wavelengths. Fabry-Perot interferometers are simple and can be tuned to any wavelength, but are limited by acceptance angle. Field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI) is considered to have the ability to overcome the deficiencies of the aforementioned filters as it can perform well at relatively large off-axis angles, is nearly lossless, and can be built to any wavelength. In this paper, the development process of an FWMI that is introduced to be the spectroscopic filter for a polarized near-infrared HSRL instrument will be present. The retrieval process of the aerosol optical properties, the design requirements with special focus on the selection of the free spectral range (FSR) of the FWMI, as well as the design result will be described in detail.

Abstract:A novel high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) technique for atmospheric aerosol remote sensing,which uses multi-longitudinal-mode laser as the transmitting light source,is proposed.A field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI) is used as the spectral discriminator,and the periodic frequency discrimination characteristic in the process of FWMI designing should match with the mode interval of multi-longitudinal-mode laser to ensure consistent fine spectral discrimination for the return signal from each longitudinal mode laser.The principle and the realization way of the proposed multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL are illustrated in detail and the main factors which constrain the frequency discrimination characteristic of the FWMI in multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL are discussed quantitatively.The performance of the proposed technique is verified further at the wavelength of 1064 nm by computer simulation.The multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL technique can avoid the dependence of the current HSRLs on the single multi-longitudinal-mode lasers remarkably.The proposed technique can not only decrease the cost,volume and weight of the laser in HSRL,but also improve its stability notably,which is of great significance for airborne and satellite-borne HSRL development in our country.

Abstract:High-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) is a powerful tool for atmospheric aerosol remote sensing. The current HSRL technique often requires a single longitudinal mode laser as the transmitter to accomplish the spectral discrimination of the aerosol and molecular scattering conveniently. However, single-mode laser is cumbersome and has very strict requirements for ambient stability, making the HSRL instrument not so robust in many cases. In this paper, a new HSRL concept, called generalized HSRL technique with a multimode laser (MML-gHSRL), is proposed, which can work using a multimode laser. The MML-gHSRL takes advantage of the period characteristic of the spectral function of the interferometric spectral discrimination filter (ISDF) thoroughly. By matching the free spectral range of the ISDF with the mode interval of the multimode laser, fine spectral discrimination for the lidar return from each longitudinal mode can be realized. Two common ISDFs, i.e., the Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) and field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI), are introduced to develop the MML-gHSRL, and their performance is quantitatively analyzed and compared. The MML-gHSRL is a natural but significant generalization for the current HSRL technique based on the IDSF. It is potential that this technique would be a good entrance to future HSRL developments, especially in airborne and satellite-borne aerosol remote sensing applications.

Abstract:The beam-steering device is a critical component in LiDAR systems for 3D imaging. Solid-state beam-steering devices attract the most attention for their advantages of robustness, fast beam-steering speed, and stability. However, solid-state beam-steering devices, such as optical phased arrays (OPAs), are challenging to realize 2D scanning ability. Here we employed a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA) in the LiDAR system to realize all solid-state two-dimensional (2D) beam-steering based on dispersion only. A frequency swept laser source is used for performing optical frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) ranging and 2D beam steering simultaneously. The 2D disperser is compact and can be easily implemented owing to its simple structure. The mechanism of continuous scanning and ranging is beneficial for obtaining high lateral resolution, and a lateral resolution of 0.06° is achieved. 3D maps of the object at a distance of 2 m are obtained with cm-level ranging precision. The frame rate of the proposed LiDAR system only depends on the wavelength-tuning speed of the swept laser source, with the potential to realize ultrafast solid-state LiDAR systems.

Abstract:Nonmechanical beam-steering devices are of importance to achieve fast, compact, and reliable LiDAR. We propose a 2D nonmechanical beam-steering device based on a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA) for frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR. In the design, 2D nonmechanical beam steering and high-resolution FMCW ranging can be achieved at the same time by wavelength tuning. The design formulas of the VIPA-based 2D disperser are greatly simplified by introducing appropriate approximation, and a feasible design procedure is proposed for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Based on the proposed method, several design examples with different optimal properties are exhibited.

Abstract:In order to eliminate the nonlinearity in the laser modulation process, the dual-interferometers system is often adopted in the frequency modulation continuous wave (FMCW) laser ranging. However, the dispersion mismatch between the fiber reference interferometer and the measurement interferometer will lead to the decrease in ranging accuracy and resolution. In this paper, a dispersion compensation method based on resampling with a modulated signal is proposed. Since the beat signal of the end face of the delay fiber is not affected by dispersion mismatch, it can be modulated to generate a signal whose phase is proportional to that of the target spatial signal. Then, the modulated signal is regarded as the reference clock to sample the target spatial signal. Thereby, the influence of the dispersion mismatch between the two optical interferometers can be eliminated. In this article, simulation is performed to verify the effect of this method, and an experiment is carried out on the target at the distance of 2.4 m. Experiments show that the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the distance spectrum after dispersion compensation is consistent with the reflected signal from the end face of the delay fiber, and the standard deviation of multiple measurements reached 10.12 μm.

Abstract:We demonstrate 32-channel dispersive optical phased arrays on a Si3N4-on-SOI integration platform. The phase difference is introduced by the arrayed waveguide. Beam steering in phased-array direction with an aliasing-free range of 22.4 degrees and free spectrum ranges of similar to 60 nm and similar to 6 nm is achieved. Meanwhile, the main lobe is deflected simultaneously by 19.67 degrees in the other direction by tuning the wavelength from 1500 nm to 1630 nm. Measurement results show that the dispersive optical phased array provides a compact, low-power and massively parallel solution for LiDAR applications.

Abstract:We present a spectral-scanning frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) 3D imaging system capable of producing high-resolution depth maps with an extended field of view (FOV). By employing a multipass configuration with an echelle grating, the system achieves an FOV of 5.5° along the grating axis. The resulting depth maps have a resolution of 70 × 40 pixels, with a depth resolution of 5.1 mm. The system employs an echelle grating for beam steering and leverages the multipass configuration for angular FOV magnification. Quantitative depth measurements and 3D imaging results of a static 3D-printed depth variation target are demonstrated. The proposed approach offers a promising solution for enhancing the FOV of spectral-scanning FMCW LiDAR systems within a limited wavelength-swept range, thereby reducing system complexity and cost, paving the way for improved 3D imaging applications.

Abstract:Empowered by compact micro-ring (MRR) arrays, wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM)-based focal plane switch array (FPSA) chip is a promising solution for light detection and ranging (LiDAR) due to its parallelism and high-level integration. However, an MRR channel with a shifting central wavelength may interrupt another channel by dropping an optical signal with an unexpected wavelength, which causes discontinuous beam scanning. To overcome this bottleneck, we propose and fabricate a hitless two-dimensional (2-D) FPSA chip based on a 2 x 8 Mach-Zehnder interferometer-embedded micro-ring resonator (MZER) array. The FPSA chip realizes a beam divergence of 0.18 degrees x 0.05 degrees, a field of view (FoV) of 9.07 degrees x 6.42 degrees with single-ended emission, and a FoV of 10.75 degrees x 6.42 degrees with dual-ended field-of-view splicing technology. Besides, we demonstrate the hitless function of our FPSA chip by performing continuous wavelength sweeping and further applying it to a free-space optical communication link. The experimental results validate the feasibility of our proposed hitless FPSA chip, which efficiently prevents signal interruptions during beam steering.
Hybrid Integrated Ultralow-Linewidth and Fast-Chirped Laser for FMCW LiDAR

Abstract:Narrow linewidth and fast-chirped frequency are essential in frequency-modulated continuous-wave lasers. We introduce a laser that meets these requirements by coupling a distributed feedback laser with an external high-Q microring resonator, where a bulky stacked piezoelectric chip is attached to the resonator for fast tuning. The laser demonstrates an ultranarrow intrinsic linewidth of 22 Hz in the self-injection-locked state. Actuated by the bulky piezoelectric chip, the maximum triangular actuation bandwidth can reach 100 kHz. The driving voltage is filtered to avoid a resonant mechanical mode, obtaining the minimum residual linearity error at 10 kHz with a 4.2 GHz tuning range. A light detection and ranging system was set up for a proof-of-concept experiment, demonstrating a high detection precision with standard deviations of 2.7 and 4.0 cm for targets at 15 and 30 m, respectively.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system for 3-D imaging, combined with laser feedback interferometry (LFI) and frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW). Compared with the conventional FMCW method, the intracavity interference between the echo signal and local oscillator enhances the amplitude of the generated beat signal effectively, which improves the sensitivity in weak-signal detection with low photon consumption. The improvement is still effective even with frequency modulation nonlinearity. Besides, the system inherits the advantages of FMCW, possessing the capacity to measure position and velocity simultaneously. In experiments, the validity of distance and velocity measurement is demonstrated, and 3-D imaging is realized by employing a pair of beam scanners. With a less than $200 \mu \text{W}$ probe beam, the system achieves imaging over 65 m away in various scenes with good fidelity, and the distance resolution is better than 1 mm. A portable prototype is also designed and fabricated. Overall, the proposed system possesses high echo-signal sensitivity, simple structure, and dynamic information availability, which provides a new idea for FMCW-LiDAR optimization for practical applications.

Abstract:Non-mechanical LiDAR systems have attracted extensive research interests due to their advantages of robustness and high beam-steering speed. Recently, spectral scanning has emerged as a promising solid-state beam-steering method, which combines dispersive elements with frequency-swept laser sources to perform ultrafast beam-steering. However, swept light sources used in LiDAR systems, such as semiconductor lasers and supercontinuum sources, are usually suffering from low sweep rate, bulky and high-cost that severely hinder the development of spectral-scanning LiDAR. Here, we propose a non-mechanical spectral-scanning frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR system based on a simple compact tunable vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). The fast-swept VCSEL together with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology is employed for high-speed beam-steering. Millimeter-level ranging accuracy and a lateral resolution of 0.286° with an overall depth voxel acquisition rate of 128 kHz are achieved experimentally.
