Abstract:Fiber-shaped supercapacitors are desirable candidates for flexible and wearable energy storage devices; however, the ultralow capacitance and intricate fabrication process of electrode materials significantly limits their performances. We exploited a steerable method to generate core-shell alpha-MnO2/graphene fibers (MnGFs), where the sheath of alpha-MnO2 with porous network structures were grown in situ intertwined on the core of graphene fiber in a microfluidic-spinning strategy. The as-obtained MnGFs exhibited outstanding mechanical flexibility and could be curled over a teflon rod for continuous production. Furthermore, the fiber-shaped supercapacitors (MGSCs) manufactured with MnGFs were successfullu assembled and exhibited good voluminal specific capacitance (136.7 F cm(-3)), prominent cyclic stability (91.6% retention over 10000 cycles), and high energy density (3.9 mWh cm(-3)). This advantageous performance was achieved by MnGFs with porous network structures, leading to the rich ion pseudo-capacitance and numerous electron transport channels. The as-prepared MGSCs could be easily adopted to power 5 light-emitting diodes after completel charging. We believe that our microfluidic spinning strategy can provide a new-style structural design method for efficient electrode materials and promote the progress of wearable electronic products.
Supercapacitors Based on Three-Dimensional Hierarchical Graphene Aerogels with Periodic Macropores

Abstract:Graphene is an atomically thin, two-dimensional (2D) carbon material that offers a unique combination of low density, exceptional mechanical properties, thermal stability, large surface area, and excellent electrical conductivity. Recent progress has resulted in macro-assemblies of graphene, such as bulk graphene aerogels for a variety of applications. However, these three-dimensional (3D) graphenes exhibit physicochemical property attenuation compared to their 2D building blocks because of one-fold composition and tortuous, stochastic porous networks. These limitations can be offset by developing a graphene composite material with an engineered porous architecture. Here, we report the fabrication of 3D periodic graphene composite aerogel microlattices for supercapacitor applications, via a 3D printing technique known as direct-ink writing. The key factor in developing these novel aerogels is creating an extrudable graphene oxide-based composite ink and modifying the 3D printing method to accommodate aerogel processing. The 3D-printed graphene composite aerogel (3D-GCA) electrodes are lightweight, highly conductive, and exhibit excellent electrochemical properties. In particular, the supercapacitors using these 3D-GCA electrodes with thicknesses on the order of millimeters display exceptional capacitive retention (ca. 90% from 0.5 to 10 A·g(-1)) and power densities (>4 kW·kg(-1)) that equal or exceed those of reported devices made with electrodes 10-100 times thinner. This work provides an example of how 3D-printed materials, such as graphene aerogels, can significantly expand the design space for fabricating high-performance and fully integrable energy storage devices optimized for a broad range of applications.
Wet-spun, porous, orientational graphene hydrogel films for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes.

Abstract:Supercapacitors with porous electrodes of graphene macroscopic assembly are supposed to have high energy storage capacity. However, a great number of "close pores" in porous graphene electrodes are invalid because electrolyte ions cannot infiltrate. A quick method to prepare porous graphene electrodes with reduced "close pores" is essential for higher energy storage. Here we propose a wet-spinning assembly approach based on the liquid crystal behavior of graphene oxide to continuously spin orientational graphene hydrogel films with "open pores", which are used directly as binder-free supercapacitor electrodes. The resulting supercapacitor electrodes show better electrochemical performance than those with disordered graphene sheets. Furthermore, three reduction methods including hydrothermal treatment, hydrazine and hydroiodic acid reduction are used to evaluate the specific capacitances of the graphene hydrogel film. Hydrazine-reduced graphene hydrogel film shows the highest capacitance of 203 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) and maintains 67.1% specific capacitance (140 F g(-1)) at 50 A g(-1). The combination of scalable wet-spinning technology and orientational structure makes graphene hydrogel films an ideal electrode material for supercapacitors.
Three-Dimensional Reduced Graphene Oxide/Poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene) Composite Open Network Architectures for Microsupercapacitors

Abstract:The three-dimensional (3D) porous nanostructures have shown attractive promise for flexible microsupercapacitors due to their merits of more exposed electrochemical active sites, higher ion diffusion coefficient, and lower charge-transfer resistance. Herein, a highly opened 3D network of reduced graphene oxide/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (rGO/PEDOT) was constructed through the laser-assisted treatment and in situ vapor phase polymerization methods, which can be employed with gel electrolyte to prepare flexible microsupercapacitors, without conductive additives, polymer binder, separator, or complex processing. These porous open network structures endow the obtained microsupercapacitors with a maximum specific capacitance (35.12 F cm −3 at 80 mA cm −3 ), the corresponding energy density up to 4.876 mWh cm −3 , remarkable cycling stability (with only about 9.8% loss after 4000 cycles), and excellent coulombic efficiency, which are comparable with most previous reported rGO-based microsupercapacitors. Additionally, the microsupercapacitors connected in series/parallel have been conveniently fabricated, followed by being integrated with solar cells as efficient energy harvesting and storage systems. Moreover, the working voltage or energy density of microsupercapacitors array can be easily tailored according to the practical requirements and this work provides a promising approach to prepare high-performance flexible micro-energy device applied in the wearable electronics accordingly.

Abstract:We have explored a new method to produce flexible and all-solidstate graphene fiber supercapacitors (GFSs) from wet-spun graphene fibers. The GFSs exhibited high capacitance (3.3 mF cm(-2)) and good stability (almost no changes occur after 5000 charge cycles and bending cycles). Moreover, we decorated GFSs with polyaniline nanoparticles and the resulting pseudocapacitors exhibited a capacitance of 66.6 mF cm(-2).

Abstract:The growing demands for wearable, portable, and flexible textile electronics have attracted enormous attention in this field and technology. Herein, we put forward a controllable method of microfluidic fabrication strategy to synthesize superconductive carbon black/graphene composite fibers (SCB/GFs). The SCB/GFs demonstrate large specific surface areas (296.236 m(2) g(-1) , average pore size of 2.6 nm), high electrical conductivity (22316 S m(-1)), and good mechanical flexibility. Moreover, a flexible supercapacitor (CGSC) assembled by SCB/GFs is successfully manufactured. As expected, the CGSCs display outstanding electrochemical performances, including large specific capacitance (volume capacitance, 176.6 F cm(-3), mass capacitance, 241.8 F g(-1)), high energy densities (5.6 mWh cm(-3)), and superior long-period cyclic stability (92.6% retention after 10000 charge-discharge cycles). Based on these excellent performance, we further employ the assembled CGSCs coated with organic ionic liquid electrolyte (EMIMBF4/PVDF/DMF) to power an electronic timer and some light emission diode lamps when it is completely charged, exhibiting the enormous capability as highly effective electrode materials for energy storage devices. Three-Dimensional Functionalized Graphenes with Systematical Control over the Interconnected Pores and Surface Functional Groups for High Energy Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Three-dimensional functionalized multilayer graphenes (3D FMG) with systematically controllable interconnected pores and surface functional groups are prepared by using combined hydrochloric acid-assisted ultrasonic exfoliation and thermal reduction approach. Electrochemical analyses show that the optimized 3D FMG owns an amazing high specific capacitance of 508Fg−1 at 5mVs−1 in aqueous electrolyte system. The energy density of 15, 32, and 66Whkg−1 has been obtained at the power density of 14, 43, and 52kWkg−1 for the 3D FMG-based supercapacitor in the aqueous, organic and ionic liquid electrolyte system, respectively. 94% of the initial capacitance of the 3D FMG-based supercapacitor is retained after 10,000 cycles at 1Ag−1 in the aqueous system. The outstanding electrochemical performances of the 3D FMG are attributed to the strong synergistic effect of the interconnected pores and surface functional groups. The hierarchical interconnected pore channels can efficiently facilitate the ionic/electronic transports between the electrodes and electrolyte ions and appropriately prevent the restacking of graphene sheets. The rational surface functional groups may improve a facile accessibility of the electrodes with the electrolytes and provide an additional pseudocapacitance.
High-Performance Microsupercapacitors based on Bio-Inspired Graphene Microfibers.

Abstract:The miniaturization of portable electronic devices has fueled the development of microsupercapacitors that hold great potential to complement or even to replace microbatteries and electrolytic capacitors. In spite of recent development taking advantage of printing and lithography, it remains a great challenge to attain high energy density without sacrificing power density. Herein, a new protocol mimicking the spider's spinning process is developed to create highly oriented microfibers from graphene-based composite via a purpose-designed microfluidic chip. The orientation provides the microfibers with electrical conductivity ~3×104 S m-1, which leads to high power density; the energy density is sustained by nanocarbon and high-purity metallic molybdenum disulfide. The microfibers are patterned in-plane to fabricate asymmetric microsupercapacitors for flexible and on-chip energy storage. The on-chip microsupercapacitor with a high pattern resolution of 100 micrometer, delivers energy density up to the order of 10-2 Wh cm-3 and retains ultra-high power density exceeding 100 W cm-3 in aqueous electrolyte. This work provides new design of flexible and on-chip asymmetric microsupercapacitors based on microfibers. The unique biomimetic microfluidic fabrication of graphene microfibers for energy storage may also stimulate thinking of the bionic design in many other fields.
Nitrogen-doped Graphene Fiber Electrodes with Optimal Micro-/Meso-/ Macro-Porosity Ratios for High-Performance Flexible Supercapacitors

Abstract:The introduction of graphene fiber-based supercapacitors as important power storage components in wearable electronic products has attracted increasing attention because of their lightweight, good flexibility, high power density, long lifecycle and excellent charge/discharge capacity. However, their capacitance and energy density are greatly confined as a result of the dense graphene stacking, hydrophobicity and poor electrical conductivity of graphene fiber electrodes. Here we report a nitrogen-doped graphene fiber electrode with optimal micro-/ meso-/macro-porosity ratios to improve the utilization efficiency of fiber inner interface for accumulated charge storage and boosted ion transport. Urea is employed as both nitrogen doping source and self-removed template for graphene fibers to tune the hierarchically porous architecture, wettability, nitrogen content, and electrical conductivity for improved electrochemical performance. The resulting supercapacitors display superior areal capacitance of 1,217 mF/cm2 (486.3 F/g) and high energy density of 27 mu W h/cm2 (10.8 W h/Kg) in polyvinyl alcohol/H3PO4 gel electrolyte. These metrics represent the highest values to date among existing all-solid-state fiber-based supercapacitors based on inorganic electrolyte. Moreover, the fiber-based supercapacitors show good rate capability and excellent cyclic performance. Our work also provides an understanding of the effect of fiber structure on electrochemical activity and highlights the importance of full utilization of graphene interior interface.

Abstract:Abstract For delivering the nanoscaled extraordinary characteristics in macroscopical bulk, it is essential to integrate two‐dimensional nanosheets into three‐dimensional (3D) porous monoliths, alternatively called as 3D architectures, 3D networks, or aerogels. The intersupported structure of porous monolithic 3D graphene (3DG) can prevent aggregation or restacking of graphene individuals, and the interconnected sp2 network of 3DG not only can provide the highway for the transport of electron/phonon but also can present continual cavities/channels for mass transfer. This review summarizes the synthesis methodology of 3DG porous monoliths and highlights the application for electric double‐layer capacitors. Present challenges and future prospects about the manufacture and application of 3DG are also discussed.
Large-area flexible core-shell graphene/porous carbon woven fabric films for fiber supercapacitor electrodes

Abstract:New porous materials are of great importance in many technological applications. Here, the direct synthesis of multi-layer graphene and porous carbon woven composite films by chemical vapor deposition on Ni gauze templates is reported. The composite films integrate the dual advantages of graphene and porous carbon, having not only the excellent electrical properties and flexibility of graphene but also the porous characteristics of amorphous carbon. The multi-layer graphene/porous carbon woven fabric film creates a new platform for a variety of applications, such as fiber supercapacitors. The designed composite film has a capacitance of 20 μF/cm2, which is close to the theoretical value and a device areal capacitance of 44 mF/cm2. Direct synthesis of multi-layer graphene and porous carbon woven composite films by chemical vapor deposition is reported. The composite films integrate the dual advantages of graphene and porous carbon, having not only the excellent electrical properties and flexibility of graphene but also the porous characteristics of amorphous carbon, creating a new platform for a variety of applications, such as supercapacitors. Three-Dimensional Graphene Network As a Highly Macro-Porous, Flexible and Large-Scale Electrode for Supercapacitor Application

Abstract:Graphene, a two-dimensional (2D) carbon nanomaterial, was widely used in many electrochemical applications due to their high mechanical strength, good chemical stability, high specific surface area, and excellent electrical conductivity. However, the major concern for those applications was the activity reaction surface area of the 2D plane structure of graphene. Therefore, in order to enhance the reaction surface area of graphene, the development of a highly porous network-macrostructure with large surface area three-dimensional graphene is an effective strategy to be achieved for electrochemical applications. In this study, we reported an effective and simple method to prepare highly macro-porous, large-scale and flexible three-dimensional graphene foam (3D GF) which was synthesized on the commercial nickel network via the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The quality of 3D GF was investigated by using a Raman spectroscopy. A field-emission scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the surface morphology of 3D GF. A high-resolution transmission electron microscopy was utilized to analyze the inter-layer distance and the number of layers of graphene. Raman results revealed the highly uniform performance of the large-scale 3D GFs. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS) were carried out to examine the electrochemical properties. Compared with the traditional 2D plane-structure graphene synthesized on the Ni foil, the CV and EIS results measured by the 3D GF confirmed its superior capacitive behavior, higher specific surface area, and also demonstrated the excellent power capabilities with a low solution resistance and charge transfer resistance. It was found that the specific capacitance of 3D GF was three times larger than the traditional 2D plane-structure graphene. In this study, a tube furnace thermal CVD was utilized to synthesize the large-scale 3D GF. The Ni forms can be curled and loaded into the tube furnace for CVD processes to fabricate the large-scale 3D GFs easily. We provided an easy method to fabricate the highly macro-porous, large-scale and flexible 3D GFs for the future graphene-based potential applications.
Stretchable All‐Gel‐State Fiber‐Shaped Supercapacitors Enabled by Macromolecularly Interconnected 3D Graphene/Nanostructured Conductive Polymer Hydrogels

Abstract:Nanostructured conductive polymer hydrogels (CPHs) have been extensively applied in energy storage owing to their advantageous features, such as excellent electrochemical activity and relatively high electrical conductivity, yet the fabrication of self‐standing and flexible electrode‐based CPHs is still hampered by their limited mechanical properties. Herein, macromolecularly interconnected 3D graphene/nanostructured CPH is synthesized via self‐assembly of CPHs and graphene oxide macrostructures. The 3D hybrid hydrogel shows uniform interconnectivity and enhanced mechanical properties due to the strong macromolecular interaction between the CPHs and graphene, thus greatly reducing aggregation in the fiber‐shaping process. A proof‐of‐concept all‐gel‐state fibrous supercapacitor based on the 3D polyaniline/graphene hydrogel is fabricated to demonstrate the outstanding flexibility and mouldability, as well as superior electrochemical properties enabled by this 3D hybrid hydrogel design. The proposed device can achieve a large strain (up to ≈40%), and deliver a remarkable volumetric energy density of 8.80 mWh cm−3 (at power density of 30.77 mW cm−3), outperforming many fiber‐shaped supercapacitors reported previously. The all‐hydrogel design opens up opportunities in the fabrication of next‐generation wearable and portable electronics.
Graphene Heterostructure Fiber with Enhanced Physicochemical Properties for Flexible Solid-State Supercapacitors

Abstract:The graphene/pseudocapacitive composite electrode materials used for energy storage usually benefit from the advantages of each component, however, they also face significant challenges in terms of structural integrity and rate performance due to the weak interactions and limited interface area between different phases. To tackle these issues, we propose a facile strategy that integrates 2D/2D van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonds to effectively and closely bind each component together. We illustrate this concept by designing and constructing a heterojunction fiber that immobilizes protonated g-C 3 N 4 onto GO nanosheets through electrostatic self -assembly. The resulting g-C 3 N 4 /RGO heterostructure fiber exhibits enhanced electrical conductivity and improved mechanical properties. When utilized as a supercapacitor electrode, it demonstrates high specific capacitances of 70.6 F cm -3 at a current density ( I d ) value of 0.1 A cm -3 , in addition to exceptional cyclic stability (Retaining 99.4 % after 15000 cycles), rate capability (Retaining 55.8 % at I d = 2 A cm -3 ), and enduring mechanical flexibility. We anticipate that this study will inspire the fabrication of heterostructure fibers for durable and high -rate energy storage devices.

Abstract:Mechanically tough large-area hierarchical porous graphene films are fabricated by blade-casting of graphene oxide hydrogel and postcasting reduction. The as-prepared graphene films, which consist of well-exfoliated graphene nanosheets, possess interpenetrating 3D hierarchical porous structures, high strength and modulus, large specific area, and high electrical conductivity. Flexible film supercapacitors fabricated with the graphene electrodes show superior areal capacitance, good rate performance, and excellent mechanical stability.

Herein, we reported a one-step scalable strategy for fast self-assembly of graphene oxide into 3D macroscopically porous GFs, with assistance of polyoxometalates (POM) as functional cross-linker and hydrazine hydrate as reductant at room-temperature. The resulting 3D interconnected macroporous POM-GFs uniformly decorated with ultrasmall POM nanoclusters were directly processed into binder-/additive-free film compact electrodes (1.68 g cm-3) with highly aligned, layer-stacked structure and electrically conductivity (622 S m-1) for high-performance supercapacitors, showing an impressive gravimetric capacitance of 205 F g-1, volumetric capacitance of 334 F cm-3 at 1 mV s-1, and remarkable cycling stability with capacitance retention of 83% after 10000 cycles, outperforming the most reported GFs. Further, the solid-state supercapacitors offered excellent gravimetric capacitance of 157 F g-1, exceptionally volumetric capacitance of 115 F cm-3 at 2 mV s-1 based on single electrode, and volumetric energy density of 2.6 mWh cm-3. Therefore, this work will open novel opportunities to room-temperature fast assembly of 3D porous graphene architectures for high-energy-density supercapacitors.

Abstract:The restacking and less pore structure of carbon nanosheets severely prolong ion transport pathways when ions diffuse in vertical direction. Here, we design and fabricate 3D porous graphitic carbon material with synergetic features combining porous nanosheets and fiber network. With the assistant of activation–graphitization effect of bifunctional catalyst K3[Fe(C2O4)3] and fiber framework of melamine foam, glucose-derived ultrathin carbon nanosheets with porous and graphitic structure are supported by fiber skeleton after one-step carbonization. Sufficient ion-accessible micropores, partially graphitic carbon nanosheets and interconnected fiber skeleton can intrinsically optimize ion/electron transport and ensure high level exposure of active surface area for charge accumulation. Therefore, the obtained material possesses high specific capacitance of 354.7 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1, excellent rate capability of 253.3 F g−1 at 30 A g−1, and outstanding cycling stability of 96.8% retention after 10000 cycles. A high energy density of 24.5 W h kg−1 (at 456.7 W kg−1) is achieved in 1 M Na2SO4. This study not only provides a promising approach for constructing porous graphitic carbon nanosheets, but also opens a new direction to optimize ion/electron transport for high-performance of energy storage.

Abstract:Solid-state flexible micro supercapacitors based on porous and conducting polymer nanofibers via the direct-write, near-field electrospinning process have been constructed. Testing results have shown a capacitance of 0.3mF/cm(2), 30X larger as compared with those of flat electrodes. Key innovations of this work include: (1) densely-packed, porous 3D nanostructures with conductive nanofibers via the near-field electrospinning process; (2) flexible solid-state micro electrodes with high energy density using the pseudocapacitive effect; and (3) simple yet versatile manufacturing process compatible with various substrates and surfaces. As such, this technology is readily available to make practical MEMS energy storage devices.
