Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors have shown enormous potential for portable electronic devices. Herein, hierarchical 3D all-carbon electrode materials are prepared by assembling N-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) on carbonized MOF materials (cZIF-8) interweaved with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors. In this ternary electrode, cZIF-8 provides a large accessible surface area, CNTs act as the electrical conductive network, and N-GQDs serve as highly pseudocapactive materials. Due to the synergistic effect and hierarchical assembly of these components, N-GQD@cZIF-8/CNT electrodes exhibit a high specific capacitance of 540 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) in a 1 m H2SO4 electrolyte and excellent cycle stability with 90.9% capacity retention over 8000 cycles. The assembled supercapacitor possesses an energy density of 18.75 Wh kg(-1) with a power density of 108.7 W kg(-1). Meanwhile, three supercapacitors connected in series can power light-emitting diodes for 20 min. All-solid-state N-GQD@cZIF-8/CNT flexible supercapacitor exhibits an energy density of 14 Wh kg(-1) with a power density of 89.3 W kg(-1), while the capacitance retention after 5000 cycles reaches 82%. This work provides an effective way to construct novel electrode materials with high energy storage density as well as good cycling performance and power density for high-performance energy storage devices via the rational design.
Carbon Nanotube Spaced Graphene Aerogels with Enhanced Capacitance in Aqueous and Ionic Liquid Electrolytes

Abstract:Carbon nanotube spaced graphene aerogels have been prepared by a hydrothermal method and used for supercapacitor applications. The specific surface area and specific capacitance can be controlled by tuning the amount of added carbon nanotubes. The as-prepared composite aerogels retain the advantage of aerogel structure in providing macropores to ensure electrodes fast wetted by the electrolyte ions and also possess additional mesopores created by the carbon nanotube spacers for more ion adsorption. Benefited from that, the composite aerogels exhibit significantly enhanced supercapacitor properties in both aqueous and ionic liquid electrolyte. Compared with graphene aerogels, the composite aerogels show a 37% larger specific capacitance of 245.5 F g(-1) at a current density of 2.5 A g(-1) and high rate capability of 197.0 F g(-1) at a high current density of 80 A g(-1) in aqueous electrolyte. Moreover, the composite aerogels deliver a 33% larger specific capacitance of 183.3 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) and a high energy density of 80 Wh kg(-1) when using an ionic liquid (EMIMBF4) as the electrolyte. Supercapacitor performance of 3D-graphene/MnO 2 foam synthesized via the combination of chemical vapor deposition with hydrothermal method

Abstract:In this paper, in situ synthesis of 3D-graphene/MnO2 foam composite using the combination of chemical vapor deposition and hydrothermal method was reported for producing highly efficient graphene/metal oxide-based hybrid supercapacitors. The in situ conformal growth of 3D-graphene/MnO2 composite exhibited high crystallinity and low contact resistance, thereby improving the charge transport efficiency of the electrolyte. Compared with the previously described MnO2-based counterparts, the porous structure of the 3D conductive graphene foam permitted electrolyte ions to rapidly move around the surface of MnO2. In the supercapacitor, the 3D-graphene/MnO2 composite electrode in the absence of carbon black showed high specific capacitance (333.4 F g−1 at 0.2 A g−1) with excellent cycling stability. This technical approach for fabrication of 3D-graphene/MnO2 composite provides a promising means in the production of energy storage electrode materials for designing high performance supercapacitor devices.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based hydrogels have attracted great interest for applying in supercapcacitors electrodes, owing to their intriguing properties that combine the structural interconnectivities and the outstanding properties of graphene. However, the pristine graphene hydrogel can not satisfy the high-performance demands, especial in high specific capacitance. Consequently, novel graphene-based composite hydrogels with increased electrochemical properties have been developed. In this mini review, a brief summary of recent progress in the research of the three-dimensional graphene-based composite hydrogel for flexible supercapacitors electrodes materials is presented. The latest progress in the graphene-based composite hydrogel consisting of graphene/metal, graphene/polymer, and atoms doped graphene is discussed. Furthermore, future perspectives and challenges in graphene-based composite hydrogel for supercapacitor electrodes are also expressed.

Micro Supercapacitors Based on A 3d Structure with Symmetric Graphene or Activated Carbon Electrodes

Abstract:This paper presents three-dimensional (3D) micro supercapacitors with thick interdigital electrodes supported and separated by SU-8. Nanoporous carbon materials including graphene and activated carbon (AC) are used as active materials in self-supporting composites to build the electrodes. The SU-8 separators provide mechanical support for thick electrodes and allow a considerable amount of material to be loaded in a limited footprint area. The prototypes have been accomplished by a simple microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) fabrication process and sealed by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) caps with ionic liquid electrolytes injected into the electrode area. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that the graphene-based prototype with 100 mu m thick electrodes shows good power performance and provides a considerable specific capacitance of about 60 mF cm(-2). Two AC-based prototypes show larger capacitance of 160 mF cm(-2) and 311 mF cm(-2) with 100 mu m and 200 mu m thick electrodes respectively, because of higher volume density of the material. The results demonstrate that both thick 3D electrode structure and volume capacitance of the electrode material are key factors for high-performance micro supercapacitors, which can be potentially used in specific applications such as power suppliers and storage components for harvesters.

Abstract:Supercapacitors are promising alternative energy storage systems due to their relatively fast rate of energy storage and delivery. We describe a simple and scalable method to fabricate three-dimensional (3D) few-layer graphene/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) hybrid nanostructures on industrial grade metal foam foils (nickel foam) via a one-step ambient pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) process. The as-grown few-layer graphene/MWNT nanocarbon foams are in the form of a homogeneous and densely packed hierarchical nanostructures and possess a very large surface area of 743m2g−1. Symmetrical electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) of 3D hybrid hierarchical few-layer graphene/MWNT nanostructures show a high specific capacitance of 286Fg−1 which leads to an energy density of 39.72Whkg−1 and a superior power density of up to 154.67kWkg−1. Moreover, the capacitance retention of 99.34% after 85000 charge–discharge cycles demonstrates the very high stability of the electrode architectures for supercapacitors. These merits enable the innovative 3D hierarchical few-layer graphene/MWNT foam to serve as high performance EDLC electrodes, resulting in energy storage devices with very high stability and power density.

Abstract:Abstract For delivering the nanoscaled extraordinary characteristics in macroscopical bulk, it is essential to integrate two‐dimensional nanosheets into three‐dimensional (3D) porous monoliths, alternatively called as 3D architectures, 3D networks, or aerogels. The intersupported structure of porous monolithic 3D graphene (3DG) can prevent aggregation or restacking of graphene individuals, and the interconnected sp2 network of 3DG not only can provide the highway for the transport of electron/phonon but also can present continual cavities/channels for mass transfer. This review summarizes the synthesis methodology of 3DG porous monoliths and highlights the application for electric double‐layer capacitors. Present challenges and future prospects about the manufacture and application of 3DG are also discussed.
Three-Dimensional Functionalized Graphenes with Systematical Control over the Interconnected Pores and Surface Functional Groups for High Energy Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Three-dimensional functionalized multilayer graphenes (3D FMG) with systematically controllable interconnected pores and surface functional groups are prepared by using combined hydrochloric acid-assisted ultrasonic exfoliation and thermal reduction approach. Electrochemical analyses show that the optimized 3D FMG owns an amazing high specific capacitance of 508Fg−1 at 5mVs−1 in aqueous electrolyte system. The energy density of 15, 32, and 66Whkg−1 has been obtained at the power density of 14, 43, and 52kWkg−1 for the 3D FMG-based supercapacitor in the aqueous, organic and ionic liquid electrolyte system, respectively. 94% of the initial capacitance of the 3D FMG-based supercapacitor is retained after 10,000 cycles at 1Ag−1 in the aqueous system. The outstanding electrochemical performances of the 3D FMG are attributed to the strong synergistic effect of the interconnected pores and surface functional groups. The hierarchical interconnected pore channels can efficiently facilitate the ionic/electronic transports between the electrodes and electrolyte ions and appropriately prevent the restacking of graphene sheets. The rational surface functional groups may improve a facile accessibility of the electrodes with the electrolytes and provide an additional pseudocapacitance.
A Three-Dimensional Structure of Ternary Carbon for High Performance Supercapacitor

Abstract:In supercapacitor applications, the energy storage capacitance and rate performance of graphene are severely weakened by the restacking of graphene sheets, which is a great challenge to overcome for fully exploring its supercapacitive properties. If one of the current strategies for promoting the ion diffusion of graphene is employed alone, only a limited improvement of supercapacitive performance of graphene can be achieved. Here, we combine three carbon allotropes into an all-carbon structure, and improve the ion diffusion and mitigate graphene restacking using combination of three strategies, including creating in-plane holes, self-assembling into three-dimensional (3D) structure, and adding spacers between graphene sheets. Thus a 3D hybrid-structured ternary-carbon (holey graphene/carbon nanotube/hollow carbon nano-onion, denoted as HG-CNT-HCNO) is synthesized as supercapacitor electrode material through a facile and effective one-step hydrothermal method. The synergistic effect of strategies and the different dimensional carbon allotropes endows the 3D structure with hierarchical porous structure, improved electron/ion transport, and increased energy storage sites. Consequently, the HG-CNT-HCNO exhibits high specific capacitance of 236.5 F g(-1), ultrahigh rate capability (capacitance retention of 97.9% as the current density increases from 0.5 to 40 A g(-1)), and high electrochemical stability. Furthermore, the device with organic electrolyte shows high energy and power densities of 71.3 Wh kg(-1) and 7.5 kW kg(-1), respectively, demonstrating a high energy storage performance. The ternary-carbon structure may open up a new avenue for electrode performance optimization in the future energy storage systems by involving different dimensional carbon nanomaterials.

Abstract:H. Ji, Y. Zhu, and co-workers demonstrate a 3D hierarchically porous carbon by introducing a polyurethane sponge to template graphene oxide into a 3D interconnected structure while KOH activation generates abundant micropores in its backbone. As described on page 5222, a supercapacitor assembled with this carbon material achieves a high energy density of 89 W h kg(-1) (64 W h L(-1) ) and outstanding power density due to its shortened ion transport distance in three dimensions.

Abstract:A problem for dairy cows following milk stasis is to cope with a high risk of intramammary infection and there is a need to initiate an extensive renewal of secretory modules in mammary glands so that milk production in next lactation may be optimized. We recently reported that ultrasonicated Enterococcus faecium SF68 (SF68) is compatible with cow mammary glands and an enhancer of innate immunity during the immediate post-milk stasis period. The current study further examines the concomitant effect of ultrasonicated SF68 on mammary tissue remodeling. Four Holstein cows each received intramammary infusions of regular antibiotic dry-cow formula (positive control) and two different doses of SF68 in different quarters. Analyses of individual quarter secretion samples showed faster neutrophil infiltration, earlier modifications in protein composition, including caseins and lactoferrins, as well as more prompt elevation of the specific unit of 92-kDa matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9) in SF68-infused quarters compared to the positive controls. Intramammary infusion of ultrasonicated SF68 seems able to accelerate the regression of mammary synthetic capacity and potentiate the breakdown of glandular extracellular matrix, indicating a more efficient mammary gland involution. Correlation analyses imply that the ability of ultrasonicated SF68 to induce faster neutrophil chemotaxis and the associated MMP9 release is partly responsible.
Self-Assembled Graphene/Polyaniline/Co3O4 Ternary Hybrid Aerogels for Supercapacitors

Abstract:A novel three-dimensional (3D) porous graphene/polyaniline/Co3O4 (GPC) ternary hybrid aerogels is firstly fabricated via self-assembly of graphene oxide/polyaniline (GO/PANI) by in situ polymerization and GO/cobalt salts hybrid sols through hydrothermal treatment. The prepared ternary hybrid aerogels features an interconnected 3D macroporous structure in which PANI/Co3O4 nanoparticles (PANI/Co3O4 NPs) with a diameter ∼ 20nm uniformly distributed on the surface of graphene nanosheets (GNs), and possesses an excellent performance with high specific capacitance of 1247Fg−1at a current density of 1Ag−1 and the capability can reach to 755Fg−1 even at 20Ag−1. Furthermore, no obvious capacitance loss is observed during 3500 cycles, indicating an outstanding cycling stability. The extraordinary electrochemical performance of the 3D GPC hybrid can be attributed to not only the high capacitance of PANI and Co3O4 with pseudocapacitive, but also the strong synergistic effect between the uniformly dispersed PANI/Co3O4 NPs and graphene aerogel, in which a powerful 3D porous structure with short diffusion path length for fast electron transportation.
Cobalt-Porphyrin Modified Three-Dimensional Graphene Hydrogel Electrode for High Performance Asymmetric Supercapacitors

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based materials have attracted much attention in the field of supercapacitors for their large surface areas and fast electronic conductivity capability. Faradaic pseudo-capacitance materials inside the architecture can enlarge the electrochemical performance of the electrode. Additionally, metal porphyrins are negative electrode active materials for supercapacitors as they have potential high pseudo-capacitance, conductivity and N-doping. The design and preparation of the 3D cobalt-porphyrin modified graphene hydrogels (3D CoP/GHs) is an interesting topic. Here, we have fabricated the 3D CoP/GH by a two-step method. The composite electrode reaches a specific capacitance of 335[Formula: see text]F[Formula: see text]g[Formula: see text], twice that of pure GHs. At the same time, resistance of the electrode material decreases and the ion transfer is accelerated due to the addition of cobalt-porphyrin. After 10[Formula: see text]000 cycles, the 3D CoP/GH maintains its stable specific capacitance retention of 94.11% indicating its excellent cycle life. The cycle life is much better than that of a hydrogel that has not been doped (81.63%) according to our previous work. Then we fabricated an asymmetrical supercapacitor which uses both the 3D CoP/GH and GH as the two electrodes (3D CoP/GH[Formula: see text]GH), and reaches an outstanding energy density of 30.40[Formula: see text]Wh[Formula: see text]kg[Formula: see text] at a current density of 1[Formula: see text]A[Formula: see text]g[Formula: see text] while the power density is 749.5[Formula: see text]W[Formula: see text]kg[Formula: see text].
Carbonated MOF-based graphene hydrogel for hierarchical all‐carbon supercapacitors with ultra-high areal and volumetric energy density

Abstract:Graphene hydrogel (GH) has been widely explored as electrode material for supercapacitors due to its three-dimensional porous network structure. However, poor conductivity and low capacitance activity have limited practical application. Herein, we design and fabricate a hierarchical all‑carbon GH-based electrode material decorated with MOF-derived porous carbon (cZIF-8) and highly N-doped graphene quantum dots. In this /GH composite, GH constructs an interconnected porous structure which benefits rapid electron/ion transport, and cZIF-8 provides a large specific surface area and enhances electrical conductivity, while N-GQDs contribute pseudo-capacitance and improve the wettability. The supercapacitor based on /GH shows a high areal capacitance (617.1 mF cm−2) and areal energy density (85.7 μWh cm−2) at 1 mA cm−2. It also has good rate capability (81.5% at 20 mA cm−2) and excellent cycling stability (93.1% after 10,000 cycles). Moreover, the assembled all-solid-state flexible supercapacitor can deliver a high energy density of 18.1 mWh cm−3 at high power density of 4907.3 mW cm−3. This rational-designed all‑carbon electrode opens up opportunities in the fabrication of next-generation wearable electronic equipments.

Highly Compressible Three-Dimensional Graphene Hydrogel for Foldable All-Solid-state Supercapacitor

Abstract:The fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based macroscopic materials with superior mechanical and electrical properties for flexible energy storage devices is still extremely challenging. Here, we report a novel 3D graphene hydrogel decorated by the biomass phytic acid (PAGH) with developed porosity and strengthen mechanical property via hydrothermal and freeze-drying methods. The phytic acid molecules are intercalated into the graphene sheets, enabling robust network structure. This induces the formation of materials with larger specific surface area, lower density and enhanced compressive strength compared with pure GH. When directly employed as an electrode, the PAGH exhibits a high specific capacitance of 248.8 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) and excellent rate performance of 67.9% as current density increasing to 20 A g(-1). Furthermore, the all-solid-state super capacitor based PAGH can deliver outstanding cycle life (86.2% after cycling 10,000 times), glorious energy density (26.5 Wh kg(-1)) and power density (5135.1 W kg(-1)). The prepared device shows stable electrochemical behaviors at random bending angles. Therefore, the present work will open a new avenue to design and fabricate new flexible and portable graphene-based electrodes for future applications in energy storage devices.

Abstract:A three-dimensional hierarchical graphene/polypyrrole aerogel (GPA) has been fabricated using graphene oxide (GO) and already synthesized one-dimensional hollow polypyrrole nanotubes (PNTs) as the feedstock. The amphiphilic GO is helpful in effectively promoting the dispersion of well-defined PNTs to result in a stable, homogeneous GO/PNT complex solution, while the PNTs not only provide a large accessible surface area for fast transport of hydrate ions but also act as spacers to prevent the restacking of graphene sheets. By a simple one-step reduction self-assembly process, hierarchically structured, low-density, highly compressible GPAs are easily obtained, which favorably combine the advantages of graphene and PNTs. The supercapacitor electrodes based on such materials exhibit excellent electrochemical performance, including a high specific capacitance up to 253 F g(-1), good rate performance, and outstanding cycle stability. Moreover, this method may be feasible to prepare other graphene-based hybrid aerogels with structure-controllable nanostructures in large scale, thereby holding enormous potential in many application fields.
Robust Graphene‐based Aerogel for Integrated 3D Asymmetric Supercapacitors with High Energy Density

Abstract:Three‐dimensional asymmetric supercapacitors (3D ASC) have garnered significant attention due to their high operating window, theoretical energy density, and circularity. However, the practical application of 3D electrode materials is limited by brittleness and excessive dead volume. Therefore, we propose a controlled contraction strategy that regulates the pore structure of 3D electrode materials, eliminates dead volume in the 3D skeleton structure, and enhances mechanical strength. In this study to obtain reduced graphene oxide/manganese dioxide (rGO/MnO2) and reduced graphene oxide/carbon nanotube (rGO/CNT) composite aerogels with a stable and compact structure. MnO2 and CNT as nanogaskets, preventing the self‐stacking of graphene nanosheets during the shrinkage process. Additionally, the high specific capacitor nanogaskets significantly enhance the specific energy density of the rGO aerogel electrode. The prepared rGO/MnO2//rGO/CNT 3D ASC exhibits a high mass‐specific capacitance of 216.15 F g‐1, a high mass energy density of 74 Wh kg‐1 at 3.5 A g‐1, and maintains a retention rate of capacitance at 99.89% after undergoing 10,000 cycles of charge and discharge at 5 A g‐1. The versatile and integrated assembly of 3D ASC units is achieved through the utilization of the robust mechanical structure of rGO‐based aerogel electrodes, employing a mortise and tenon structural design.

Graphene Quantum Dots-Three-dimensional Graphene Composites for High-Performance Supercapacitors.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have been successfully deposited onto the three-dimensional graphene (3DG) by a benign electrochemical method and the ordered 3DG structure remains intact after the uniform deposition of GQDs. In addition, the capacitive properties of the as-formed GQD-3DG composites are evaluated in symmetrical supercapacitors. It is found that the supercapacitor fabricated from the GQD-3DG composite is highly stable and exhibits a high specific capacitance of 268 F g(-1), representing a more than 90% improvement over that of the supercapacitor made from pure 3DG electrodes (136 F g(-1)). Owing to the convenience of the current method, it can be further used in other well-defined electrode materials, such as carbon nanotubes, carbon aerogels and conjugated polymers to improve the performance of the supercapacitors.

Abstract:We reported a new type of graphene aerogel-nickel foam (GA@NF) hybrid material prepared through a facile two-step approach and explored its energy storage application as a binder-free supercapacitor electrode. By simple freeze-drying and the subsequent thermal annealing of graphene oxide hydrogel-NF hybrid precursor, three-dimensional graphene aerogels with high mass, hierarchical porosity, and high conductivity were deposited on a NF framework. The resulting binder-free GA@NF electrode exhibited satisfactory double-layer capacitive behavior with high rate capability, good electrochemical cyclic stability, and a high specific capacitance of 366 F g(-1) at a current density of 2 A g(-1). The versatility of this approach was further verified by the successful preparation of 3D graphene/carbon nanotube hybrid aerogel-NF as a supercapacitor electrode, also with improved electrochemical performance. With advantageous features, such a facile and versatile fabrication technique shows great promise in the preparation of various types of carbon-metal hybrid electrodes.
High Electroactive Material Loading on a Carbon Nanotube@3D Graphene Aerogel for High‐Performance Flexible All‐Solid‐State Asymmetric Supercapacitors

Abstract:Freestanding carbon-based hybrids, specifically carbon nanotube@3D graphene (CNTs@3DG) hybrid, are of great interest in electrochemical energy storage. However, the large holes (about 400 mu m) in the commonly used 3D graphene foams (3DGF) constitute as high as 90% of the electrode volume, resulting in a very low loading of electroactive materials that is electrically connected to the carbon, which makes it difficult for flexible supercapacitors to achieve high gravimetric and volumetric energy density. Here, a hierarchically porous carbon hybrid is fabricated by growing 1D CNTs on 3D graphene aerogel (CNTs@3DGA) using a facile one-step chemical vapor deposition process. In this architecture, the 3DGA with ample interconnected micrometer-sized pores (about 5 mu m) dramatically enhances mass loading of electroactive materials comparing with 3DGF. An optimized all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor (AASC) based on MnO2@CNTs@3DGA and Ppy@CNTs@3DGA electrodes exhibits high volumetric energy density of 3.85 mW h cm(-3) and superior long-term cycle stability with 84.6% retention after 20 000 cycles, which are among the best reported for AASCs with both electrodes made of pseudocapacitive electroactive materials.
