Abstract:Transition metal-catalyzed hydroalkenylation is widely applied in organic synthesis to construct carbon-carbon bonds and synthesize substituted alkenes. In this work, the mechanism and regioselectivities of [(NHC)NiH]+-catalyzed intramolecular cycloisomerization of dienes are studied by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Through an initial hydride insertion, [(NHC)NiH]+ reacts with the diene substrate to generate the alkyl nickel species. This alkyl nickel species is the resting state of the catalytic cycle, and the hydroalkenylation reaction involves sequential olefin insertion and β-hydride transfer. The selectivity between the possible cycloisomerization products is determined by both the olefin insertion and β-hydride transfer steps. The olefin insertion favors the exo-cyclization due to the high ring strain of the insertion transition states for the endo-cyclization. In the β-hydride transfer step, the hydride transfers to the internal olefin position selectively to avoid the steric repulsions between the bulky NHC ligand and the alkyl substituent of the olefin substrate. This selectivity of β-hydride transfer leads to the n-exo cyclization instead of the (n - 1)-exo cyclization. These mechanistic insights will shed light on the future development of transition metal-catalyzed hydroalkenylation reactions.

Abstract:Through the formation of the thermodynamically favored Cr(III)–O bond, the Nozaki–Hiyama–Kishi reaction has been widely applied in the functionalization of carbonyl compounds with the help of Ni catalysis. Herein, a divergent regio- and stereoselective diarylation of dienes has been developed under Ni/Cr cocatalysis without the inherent driving force for the formation of polar metal alkoxides. Preliminary experimental studies have been conducted to elucidate the key roles of Ni, Cr, and redox-active bis(imino)pyridine (PDI) ligands. The proposed mechanism suggests that the newly formed C–C bond of this diarylation was created by organonickel species instead of organochromium species.

Abstract:The mechanisms and chemo- and regioselectivities of Ru(II)-catalyzed decarboxylative C-H alkenylation of aryl carboxylic acids with alkynes were investigated with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The catalytic cycle involves sequential carboxylate-directed C-H activation, alkyne insertion, decarboxylation and protonation. The facile tether-assisted decarboxylation step directs the intermediate toward the desired decarboxylative alkenylation, instead of typical annulation and double alkenylation pathways. The decarboxylation barrier is very sensitive to the tether length, and only the seven-membered ring intermediate can selectively undergo the designed decarboxylation, suggesting a tether-dependent chemoselectivity. This tether-dependent chemoselectivity also applies to the alkyl tethers. In addition, the polarity of solvent is found to control the chemoselectivity between the decarboxylative alkenylation and [4 + 2] annulation. Solvent with low polarity (toluene) favors the decarboxylation pathway, leading to the decarboxylative alkenylation. Solvent with high polarity (methanol) favors the ionic stepwise C-O reductive elimination pathway, leading to the [4 + 2] annulation. To understand the origins of regioselectivity with asymmetric alkynes, the distortion/interaction analysis was applied to the alkyne insertion transition states, and led to a predictive frontier molecular orbital model. The asymmetric alkynes selectively use the terminal with the larger HOMO orbital coefficient to form the C-C bond in the insertion step.
Mechanistic Insights into the Nickel-Catalyzed Regioselective Carboxylation of Allylic Alcohols

Abstract:The recently reported nickel-catalyzed direct carboxylation of allylic alcohol eliminates the necessity for pre-activation of substrates in traditional strategies and generates linear β, γ-unsaturated carboxylic acids with high E/Z selectivity. Motivated by the significant experimental advantages and the mechanistic ambiguity (in the C–O activation mode of the allylic alcohol, the rate- and regio-/stereoselectivity-determining steps, etc.), we conducted a detailed study on the mechanism of Ni-catalyzed carboxylation of allylic alcohols with density functional theory calculations. It is found that the reaction occurs via the activation of allylic alcohol, oxidative ligation, reduction, and carboxylation steps. The rate-determining step is the first step, in which the moisture of the reaction system plays a critical role. Through the hydrogen bonding network formed between water and the substrate, “proton-relay” occurs easily to generate the allylic hydrogen carbonate and to undergo the subsequent oxidative ligation steps. Meanwhile, the steric hindrance between CO2 and the allylic group during the coordination of CO2 is mainly responsible for the regioselectivity on the terminal carbon atom, and the E/Z selectivity is mainly determined by the thermodynamic stability of the E-substrates.

Abstract:The mechanistic details of the asymmetric Ni‐catalyzed reductive cyclization/carboxylation of alkenes with CO2 have been revisited using DFT methods. Emphasis was put on the enantioselectivity and the mechanistic role of Lewis acid additives and in situ formed salts. Our results show that oxidative addition of the substrate is rate‐limiting, with the formed Ni(II)‐aryl intermediate preferring a triplet spin state. After reduction to Ni(I), enantioselective cyclization of the substrate occurs, followed by inner sphere carboxylation. Our proposed mechanism reproduces the experimentally observed enantiomeric excess and identifies critical C‐H/O and C‐H/N interactions that affect the selectivity. Further, our results highlight the beneficial effect of Lewis acids on CO2 insertion and suggest that in situ formed salts influence if the 5‐exo or 6‐endo product will be formed.

Abstract:There is ongoing intense interest in catalysis with the Earth-abundant metal nickel. This DFT study reveals a plausible mechanism for the first Ni-catalyzed asymmetric Reppe carbonylation of cyclopropenes with carbon monoxide and phenols/alcohols. The RO-H bond undergoes a distinct heterolytic cleavage rather than the proposed oxidative addition, transferring a proton to a nickel-bound anionic carbon atom in a stereoselective manner. This and other novel insights gained can have implications for developing new asymmetric Reppe reactions.

Abstract:Transition metal-catalyzed alkyne dimerization represents a powerful method for the construction of enynes. However, the ambiguous hydrogen transfer mechanism during the dimerization has resulted in controlling the regio-, stereo-, and, where applicable, chemoselectivity remaining a long-standing challenge. Herein, a combination of DFT calculations and quasi-classical MD simulations was used to interrogate the dynamic motion of hydrogen in cobalt-catalyzed alkyne dimerization. The collective results inspired us to propose, for the first time, a substrate-dependent differential hydride transfer model involving either concerted oxidative hydrogen transfer or stepwise oxidative addition, followed by alkyne insertion. The practicability and universality of this oxidative hydride transfer mechanism were further validated by the theoretical studies of experimentally observed selective cross- and homo-dimerization. Charge distribution analyses depicted that the differentiation between those two hydride transfer mechanisms originates from the alpha-silicon effect, which can stabilize the neighboring negative charge of the alkyne. Furthermore, a comprehensive DFT study of the substituent effects of alkynes reveals that the electron-withdrawing group will accelerate the oxidative hydride transfer process, which can open up avenues for mechanistic-oriented selective dimerization.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculations with B3LYP and M06 functionals elucidated the reactivities of alkynes and Z/E selectivity of cyclodecatriene products in the Ni-catalyzed [4 + 4 + 2] cycloadditions of dienes and alkynes. The Ni-mediated oxidative cyclization of butadienes determines the Z/E selectivity. Only the oxidative cyclization of one s-cis to one s-trans butadiene is facile and exergonic, leading to the observed 1Z,4Z,8E-cyclodecatriene product. The same step with two s-cis or s-trans butadienes is either kinetically or thermodynamically unfavorable, and the 1Z,4E,8E- and 1Z,4Z,8Z-cyclodecatriene isomers are not observed in experiments. In addition, the competition between the desired cooligomerization and [2 + 2 + 2] cycloadditions of alkynes depends on the coordination of alkynes. With either electron-deficient alkynes or alkynes with free hydroxyl groups, the coordination of alkynes is stronger than that of dienes, and alkyne trimerization prevails. With alkyl-substituted alkynes, the generation of alkyne-coordinated nickel complex is much less favorable, and the [4 + 4 + 2] cycloaddition occurs.

Abstract:Photocatalytic carboxylation with CO2 is a powerful strategy for the synthesis of functionalized carboxylic acids and their derivatives under mild conditions. However, the dicarboxylation of alkenes with CO2 is still underdeveloped and confined to the formation of only two C–C bonds. Herein, we report the 1,3-dicarboxylation of unactivated alkenes with CO2 via 1,2-aryl migration, which involves the cleavage of one C–C bond and the formation of three C–C bonds. This visible-light photocatalytic protocol is also distinguished by good functional group tolerance, broad substrate scope, and facile derivations of products to heterocyclic scaffolds. Mechanistic studies indicate that the in situ generated formate could act as the radical precursor of CO2 ˙−, and the following radical addition, 1,2-aryl migration, single electron reduction, and nucleophilic attack at the second CO2 would afford the dicarboxylic acids.

Abstract:Aliphatic-1,3-dienes represent a problematic class of substrates for catalytic 1,2-dicarbofunctionalization due to inherent complications of undesired allylic rearrangement, consequently giving rise to inseparable isomeric product mixtures. Here, we show that aliphatic-1,3-dienes can participate in highly efficient and site-selective 1,2-diarylation, by merging with an aryl triflate and arylmetal reagent in the presence of a sizeable N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)–Ni(0) catalyst. Adducts containing tertiary or quaternary centers and those derived from multifunctional bioactive molecules could be obtained.

Abstract:The carboxylation of unsaturated hydrocarbons using CO2 offers a highly appealing access to valuable carboxylic acids, while selectively obtaining the anti-Markovnikov product still remains a challenge. In this work, a density functional theory (DFT) study on the ligand-controlled regioselective hydrocarboxylation of styrenes with CO2 mediated by Ni(II) catalysts is presented. Our calculations support that the regioselectivity origins from the difference in reaction mechanisms and the Ni center of active catalytic species has different valence states when Ni(II) catalysts with the ligand of different properties are used. For the neocuproine ligand, styrene ligating to the NiI species initiates its hydrocarboxylation, and subsequent protonation preferentially occurs at the Cβ atom, which promotes the following CO2 insertion at the Cα-position and leads to a unique α-selective product. However, a key Ni-hydride intermediate is first formed by the protonation of Ni0 species in the presence of 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane (dppb) as the ligand. Abstract:A nickel-catalyzed three-component hydrocarboxylation of diynes with ZnEt2 and CO2 (1 atm) is disclosed. With this method, symmetric/nonsymmetric diynes could be reacted smoothly with very high stereo- and regioselectivity, affording conjugated 2,4-alkadienoic acids incorporated with five- or six-membered rings efficiently. A stepwise non-oxidative cyclometalation mechanism was proposed based on careful mechanistic studies.

Abstract:This density functional theory (DFT) study explores the reaction mechanism of nickel-catalyzed hydroarylation of unactivated alkenes that selectively generates branched (Markovnikov) products. Extensive DFT calculations have revealed a novel and plausible mechanism via hydronickelation, which differs from the originally proposed pathway through carbonickelation. The N-heterocyclic carbene-anchored catalyst IPrNiOi-Pr favors β-hydride elimination from the alkoxide ligand over oxidative addition with carbon electrophiles. This chemoselectivity results in the formation of the Ni( I ) hydride complex IPrNiH, initiating a hydronickelation pathway involving alkene into Ni–H insertion, PhOTf oxidative addition, and alkyl–phenyl reductive elimination. The β-hydride elimination represents the rate-limiting step, while the oxidative addition of PhOTf determines the regioselectivity, which is sterically controlled. This DFT study demonstrates a robust theoretical–experimental synergy and provides new mechanistic insights valuable for reaction development.

Various 1,4-dienes could be synthesized in good yield with excellent Markovnikov selectivity for alkyl-and aryl-substituted terminal alkynes under mild reaction conditions. A gram-scale reaction gives considerable yield. Preliminary mechanistic studies support the reaction pathway through sequential carboxylation/allylnickelation/lithium bicarbonate nickelation/transmetalation in the hydroallylation of alkynes with allylic alcohols in the presence of CO2.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to study the mechanism of the recently reported Co-catalyzed ligand-controlled hydroarylation of styrenes as a means of preparing 1,1- or 1,2-diarylalkanes. The present study corroborates the previously proposed three-step mechanism, comprising C-H activation (C-H oxidative addition), styrene insertion, and reductive elimination. In the C-H activation and reductive elimination steps, our calculations suggest that styrene does not coordinate to the Co center. In the insertion step, styrene is inserted into the Co-H bond rather than the Co-C bond. Furthermore, the rate- and regiodetermining step is found to be C-C reductive elimination. It is significant that the regioselectivity observed experimentally has been successfully reproduced by our calculations. More importantly, in analyzing the origin of the ligand-controlled regioselectivity, we have found that the steric effects of different ligands mainly determine the observed regioselectivity. Both the shape (i.e., "umbrella-up" or "umbrella-down") and bulkiness of the ligand contribute to the steric effect.

The hydroalkylation of conjugated olefins catalyzed by nickel is an important type of organic chemical reaction, and its mechanism has always been the focus of organic chemists. In this paper, a hydroalkylation reaction developed by the Mazet research group was studied in detail by means of density functional theory (DFT), and a possible mechanism model of the reaction was obtained. In this context, the attractive regioselectivity of the reaction was explored and rationally explained.
