Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculations with B3LYP and M06 functionals elucidated the reactivities of alkynes and Z/E selectivity of cyclodecatriene products in the Ni-catalyzed [4 + 4 + 2] cycloadditions of dienes and alkynes. The Ni-mediated oxidative cyclization of butadienes determines the Z/E selectivity. Only the oxidative cyclization of one s-cis to one s-trans butadiene is facile and exergonic, leading to the observed 1Z,4Z,8E-cyclodecatriene product. The same step with two s-cis or s-trans butadienes is either kinetically or thermodynamically unfavorable, and the 1Z,4E,8E- and 1Z,4Z,8Z-cyclodecatriene isomers are not observed in experiments. In addition, the competition between the desired cooligomerization and [2 + 2 + 2] cycloadditions of alkynes depends on the coordination of alkynes. With either electron-deficient alkynes or alkynes with free hydroxyl groups, the coordination of alkynes is stronger than that of dienes, and alkyne trimerization prevails. With alkyl-substituted alkynes, the generation of alkyne-coordinated nickel complex is much less favorable, and the [4 + 4 + 2] cycloaddition occurs.

Abstract:Transition metal-catalyzed hydroalkenylation is widely applied in organic synthesis to construct carbon-carbon bonds and synthesize substituted alkenes. In this work, the mechanism and regioselectivities of [(NHC)NiH]+-catalyzed intramolecular cycloisomerization of dienes are studied by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Through an initial hydride insertion, [(NHC)NiH]+ reacts with the diene substrate to generate the alkyl nickel species. This alkyl nickel species is the resting state of the catalytic cycle, and the hydroalkenylation reaction involves sequential olefin insertion and β-hydride transfer. The selectivity between the possible cycloisomerization products is determined by both the olefin insertion and β-hydride transfer steps. The olefin insertion favors the exo-cyclization due to the high ring strain of the insertion transition states for the endo-cyclization. In the β-hydride transfer step, the hydride transfers to the internal olefin position selectively to avoid the steric repulsions between the bulky NHC ligand and the alkyl substituent of the olefin substrate. This selectivity of β-hydride transfer leads to the n-exo cyclization instead of the (n - 1)-exo cyclization. These mechanistic insights will shed light on the future development of transition metal-catalyzed hydroalkenylation reactions.

Abstract:Through the formation of the thermodynamically favored Cr(III)–O bond, the Nozaki–Hiyama–Kishi reaction has been widely applied in the functionalization of carbonyl compounds with the help of Ni catalysis. Herein, a divergent regio- and stereoselective diarylation of dienes has been developed under Ni/Cr cocatalysis without the inherent driving force for the formation of polar metal alkoxides. Preliminary experimental studies have been conducted to elucidate the key roles of Ni, Cr, and redox-active bis(imino)pyridine (PDI) ligands. The proposed mechanism suggests that the newly formed C–C bond of this diarylation was created by organonickel species instead of organochromium species.

Abstract:A Ni/N-heterocyclic carbene catalyst couples diynes to the C(α)-C(β) double bond of tropone, a type of reaction that is unprecedented for metal-catalyzed cycloadditions with aromatic tropone. Many different diynes were efficiently coupled to afford [5-6-7] fused tricyclic products, while [5-7-6] fused tricyclic compounds were obtained as minor byproducts in a few cases. The reaction has broad substrate scope and tolerates a wide range of functional groups, and excellent regioselectivity is found with unsymmetrical diynes. Theoretical calculations show that the apparent enone cycloaddition occurs through a distinctive 8π insertion of tropone. The initial intramolecular oxidative cyclization of diyne produces the nickelacyclopentadiene intermediate. This intermediate undergoes an 8π insertion of tropone, and subsequent reductive elimination generates the [5-6-7] fused tricyclic product. This initial product undergoes two competing isomerizations, leading to the observed [5-6-7] and [5-7-6] fused tricyclic products.

Abstract:Selectivities in (4 + 2) and (2 + 2) cycloadditions of keteniminium cations with 1,3-dienes studied experimentally by Ghosez et al. were explored with omega B97X-D density functional theory. Reactions of keteniminium cations with 1,3-dienes are influenced by the s-cis or s-trans nature of the diene. s-Trans dienes react to give an intermediate enamine that leads to favored formation of (2 + 2) cycloadducts across the keteniminium C-C bond. The first step of the cycloaddition is rate-determining, and reaction occurs by attack on the central carbon of the keteniminium cation and subsequent C- C bond formation. In contrast, s-cis constrained dienes lead to preferential formation of (4 + 2) products by both stepwise and concerted mechanisms involving regioselective addition to the keteniminium C-N bond. Diels-Alder reaction occurs via a concerted mechanism if the diene termini are held in close proximity, as in cyclopentadiene.

Abstract:The mechanism and origins of selectivities in [Ni(NHC)]-catalyzed intramolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions and homo-ene reactions of vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs) and alkynes have been studied using density functional theory. The preferred mechanism involves oxidative alkyne-alkene cyclization to form a metallacyclopentene intermediate, in contrast to a cyclopropane cleavage pathway in the reaction with Rh(I) catalysts. The selectivity between the (5 + 2) and homo-ene products is determined in the subsequent competing reductive elimination and β-hydride elimination steps. Two similar-sized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands, SIPr and ItBu, yielded reversed product selectivity, favoring the (5 + 2) and homo-ene products respectively. This is attributed to the anisotropic steric environment of these NHC ligands, which positions the bulky substituents on the ligand toward different directions and leads to distinct steric control in the reductive elimination and β-hydride elimination transition states.

Abstract:A regio-, diastereo- and enantioselective 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction between nitrones and electron-deficient alkenes has been developed employing C 1 -symmetrical Ti(OTos) 2 - and TiCl 2 -TADDOLate as catalysts. In the presence of powdered 4 Å molecular sieves and 100 mol% of Ti(OTos) 2 -TADDOLate as the catalyst, the nitrones smoothly react with alkenes at room temperature to give isoxazolidines in high conversion, giving the trans-diastereomer of the isoxazolidines with de's up to >90% and ee up to 58%. Furthermore, C 1 -symmetrical TiCl 2 -TADDOLate has a better chiral induction, giving the trans-diastereomer of the isoxazolidines with high enantioselectivity up to 70% ee. Abstract:Mechanisms and reactivity differences for the cycloaddition of anhydride to alkyne catalyzed by the palladium and nickel catalysts have been investigated by extensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The predicted free energy profiles for the Pd- and Ni-catalyzed reactions have been used to evaluate possible mechanisms for the formation of different products. Calculations show that the formation of isocoumarin via the decarbonylative addition of anhydride to alkyne is kinetically more favorable than the channel to indenone in the Ni-catalyzed reaction. On the contrary, the preparation of naphthalene through sequential liberation of CO2 and CO is kinetically more favorable than that the formation of indenone in the Pd-catalyzed process. The bonding differences between Pd-C and Ni-C bonds, arising from the relativistic effect of late transition metals, play an important role in regulating their catalytic activity. The calculation results show good agreement with the experiments.

Abstract:The mechanisms of [8 + 2] cycloaddition reactions between dienylfurans/dienylisobenzofurans and the activated alkyne, DMAD (dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate), have been investigated by DFT calculations. The former [8 + 2] reaction is stepwise, starting from attack of the diene substituent on furan, not the furyl moiety in dienylfurans, to DMAD to give a diradical intermediate, which then undergoes ring closure to form the second bond between DMAD and the furan moiety, generating the final [8 + 2] cycloadducts. In contrast, the latter [8 + 2] reaction starts from [4 + 2] cycloaddition of the diene in the furan ring of dienylisobenzofurans toward DMAD, followed by the rate-determining stepwise [1,5]-vinyl shift, forming the [8 + 2] products. The different mechanisms of [8 + 2] reactions are attributed to the facts that for dienylfurans, the reactive diene part is the diene substituent on furan, but in the case of dienylisobenzofurans, it is the diene in the furan ring (its reaction with DMAD to generate an aromatic benzene ring is the driving force for this regiochemistry). Consequently, the [8 + 2] reactions begin with the reaction of the most reactive part of tetraene (either the diene substituent on furan for dienylfurans or the diene in the furan ring for dienylisobenzofurans) with DMAD. FMO analysis and kinetic study have been carried out to gain more information of the reaction mechanisms. Two [8 + 2] reactions of dienylisobenzofurans with different substituents toward DMAD have also been further analyzed by DFT calculations in this paper.

Abstract:Nickel catalysis has recently emerged as an important addition to the suite of transition metal-catalysed C-H bond functionalization methods. Here we report density functional theory calculations to elucidate the mechanism of Ni(II)-catalysed C–H arylation with a diaryliodonium salt or a phenyliodide. The effect of the choice of oxidant on the order of oxidative addition and C–H bond cleavage is investigated. When the active catalyst is oxidized by the diaryliodonium salt oxidant, C–H bond cleavage occurs to give an alkyl-aryl-Ni(IV) species. Conversely, the relatively weak oxidant phenyliodide leads to an alternative reaction sequence. The active catalyst first undergoes C–H bond cleavage, followed by oxidative addition of the phenyliodide to give a Ni(IV) species. Frontier molecular orbital analysis demonstrates that the reaction sequence of oxidative addition and C–H bond cleavage is determined by the unoccupied C aryl –I bond antibonding orbital level of the oxidant.

Abstract:DielsAlder reaction between electronically neutral dienes and dienophiles is usually sluggish under thermal conditions and has to be catalyzed by transition metal catalysts. We report here our DFT study of the mechanism and stereochemistry of the Rh-catalyzed DielsAlder reaction between electronically neutral dienes and dienophiles (alkenes and alkynes), finding that this reaction includes a reaction sequence of oxidative cyclization between diene and alkene/alkyne and a reductive elimination step. The alkynes oxidative cyclization is much faster than alkenes due to the additional coordination of alkyne to the Rh center in the oxidative cyclization transition state. For both intermolecular and intramolecular reactions, the reductive elimination step in the catalytic cycle is rate-determining. The different reactivity of ene-diene and yne-diene substrates can be rationalized by the model that reductive elimination to form a C(sp(2))C(sp(3)) bond is easier than that for the formation of a C(sp(3))C(sp(3)) bond, due to the additional coordination of the double bond to the Rh center in the transition state in the former. We also uncovered the reasons for the high para-selectivity of the intermolecular DielsAlder reaction of dienes and alkynes. In addition, DFT calculations aiming to understand the high diastereoselectivity of an intramolecular [4 + 2] reaction of ene-dienes with substituents adjacent to the diene and ene moieties of the substrates found that the substituents in the substrates favor staying away from the Rh center in the oxidative cyclization transition states. This preference leads to the generation of the final [4 + 2] products with the substituents and the bridgehead hydrogen atoms in a cis-configuration.

Abstract:Density functional theory calculations were carried out to study the mechanisms of Pd‐catalyzed reactions of alkynes with tert ‐butyl isocyanide forming pyrroles. In the case of di ‐palladium catalysis, the calculations indicated that alkyne insertion, isocyanide insertion, intramolecular cyclization, isocyanide insertion, isomerization and ligand substitution were involved in the mechanism. The intramolecular cyclization process was calculated to be the rate‐determining step in the catalytic cycle. The substituent effects on the regioselectivity of reaction were also analyzed. In addition, detailed calculations on mono‐palladium catalysis showed that the activity of mononuclear catalysis was not as high as that of di ‐palladium catalysis. These calculation results were in good agreement with the experimental results.
