Abstract:Gold-chalcogen interactions are ubiquitous in gold biological and medicinal systems. Understanding the nature of these interactions can provide the basis for regulating their structures and functionalities, and a reasonable way to interpret the differences in various properties. However, the relative strength of gold-chalcogen bonds remains controversial, and the conclusions of many related works are inconsistent. Thus, in this work, we successfully quantified the relative strength of Au-X (X=S, Se, and Te from chalcogenide-containing A-B-A type block copolymers) interactions at the single-molecule level through single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) from a kinetic point of view and quantum chemical studies from a thermodynamic point of view. Both sets of results suggested that the strength of the Au-X bonds decreases as Au-Te>Au-Se>Au-S. Our findings unveiled the relative strength and nature of gold-chalcogen interactions, which may help expand their application in electronics, catalysis, medicine and many other fields.

Abstract:Sulfur, selenium-containing bonds, including disufide bond (SS), diselenide bond (SeSe), and selenide-sulfide bond (SeS), are an important type of light responsive dynamic covalent bonds. Among them, SS and SeS bonds can undergo exchange reaction with the irridiation of UV light, while SeSe bond only requires visible light due to its weaker bond energy. The purpose of this research is to use atomic force microscope-based single molecule force spectroscopy (AFM-SMFS) measurement to reveal the reasons behind the responsiveness and stability of S/Se related dynamic covalent bonds. In this study, quartz substrates modified by SS or SeSe bond were prepared via surface modification. Specifically, the quartz substrates were first washed with a mixture of sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide (volume ratio is 7:3), and then processed with oxygen plasma to obtain a hydrophilic surface. The surface then reacted with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane to form amino groups at the top, which further reacted with disulfide or diselenide containing diacid to afford SS or SeSe bond-modified substrates. The structures of the surfaces were comfirmed by water contact angle (WCA), atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. Based on the light induced exchange reaction, wettabilities of the substrates were able to adjusted and were characterized by WCA and XPS. By exchanging with thiol or diselenide containing polymer, the polymer chain-attached substrates linked by a single bond of either SS, SeS, or SeSe could be obtained. The rupture forces of the three bonds were measured by SMFS. At a pulling speed of 200 nm/s, the rupture forces of SeSe, SeS and SS bonds were (1100 +/- 300), (1320 +/- 330), and (1450 +/- 300) pN, respectively, indicating their strengths decreased as SS > SeS > SeSe. This result was consistent with the thermodynamic stability ranking of the three bonds. SMFS results illustrated that the strength of the dynamic covalent bond is between that of non-covalent interaction and that of robust covalent bond (e.g. C - C bond), which accounts for its balance of responsiveness and stability.

Abstract:Understanding the nature of chemical bonding in solids is crucial to comprehend the physical and chemical properties of a given compound. To explore changes in chemical bonding in lead chalcogenides (PbX, where X = Te, Se, S, O), a combination of property-, bond breaking- and quantum-mechanical bonding descriptors have been applied. The outcome of our explorations reveals an electron transfer driven transition from metavalent bonding in PbX (X = Te, Se, S) to iono-covalent bonding in beta-PbO. Metavalent bonding is characterized by adjacent atoms being held together by sharing about a single electron and small electron transfer (ET). The transition from metavalent to iono-covalent bonding manifests itself in clear changes in these quantum-mechanical descriptors (ES and ET), as well as in property-based descriptors (i.e. Born effective charge, dielectric function, effective coordination number (ECON) and mode-specific Grueneisen parameter, and in bond breaking descriptors (PME). Metavalent bonding collapses, if significant charge localization occurs at the ion cores (ET) and/or in the interatomic region (ES). Predominantly changing the degree of electron transfer opens possibilities to tailor materials properties such as the chemical bond and electronic polarizability, optical band gap and optical interband transitions characterized by the imaginary part of the dielectric function. Hence, the insights gained from this study highlight the technological relevance of the concept of metavalent bonding and its potential for materials design.

A Crucial Role of Bond Covalency Competition in Determining the Bandgap and Photocatalytic Performance of Silver Oxosalts

Abstract:The optical bandgaps, the surface charges, and the photocatalytic activities of the silver oxosalts Ag3AsO4, Ag2CO3, Ag3PO4, Ag2SO4, and Ag2SeO4 are systematically investigated with several experimental techniques and first principles density functional theory calculations. The trends in the optical bandgaps and the surface charges of these silver oxosalts, Ag-x(XOy)(z), are analyzed by considering how the X-O bond covalency affects the charge on the terminal oxygen atoms and the Ag-O bond covalency. The optical bandgaps of Ag-x(XOy)(z) are well-described by the bond-covalency competition in the Ag-O-X linkages because an increase in the overlap between the O 2s/2p and X ns/np orbitals decreases the overlap between the Ag 4d and 0 2s/2p orbitals. The optical bandgap increases linearly with increasing the Z/r ratio of the atom X, a simple measure of the X-O bond covalency. In the photodegradation of charged molecules, the surface charge of Ag-x(XOy)(z) plays a prominent role and decreases with increasing the Z/r ratio. As expected from the present theoretical predictions, newly investigated Ag2SeO4 exhibits a promising photocatalytic activity under visible light. The Z/r an effective measure for predicting the photocatalyst performance and the optical bandgap ratio of the central atom X provides of silver oxosalts Ag-x(XOy)(z).
A Silver Nanocluster Containing Interstitial Sulfur and Unprecedented Chemical Bonds.

Abstract:The emergence of thiolated metal nanoclusters provides opportunities to identify significant and unprecedented phenomena because they are at quantum sizes and can be characterized with X-ray crystallography. Recently silver nanoclusters have received extensive interest owing to their merits, such as low-cost and rich properties. Herein, a thiolated silver nanocluster [Ag46 S7 (SPhMe2 )24 ]NO3 (Ag46 for short) with a face-centered cubic (fcc) structure was successfully synthesized and structurally resolved by X-ray analysis. Most importantly, interstitial sulfur was found in the lattice void of Ag46 without lattice distortion or expansion, indicating that the classic theory of interstitial metal solid solutions might be not applicable at quantum size. Furthermore, unprecedented chemical bonds and unique structural features (such as asymmetrically coordinated μ4 -S) were found in Ag46 and might be related to the interstitial sulfur, which is supported by natural population analyses.

Abstract:The synthetically useful solvent-free silver(I) salt Ag[Al(pftb)(4)] (pftb=-OC(CF3)(3)) was prepared by metathesis reaction of Li[Al(pftb)(4)] with Ag[SbF6] in liquid SO2. The solvated complexes [Ag(OSO)][Al(pftb)(4)], [Ag(OSO)(2/2)][SbF6], and [Ag(CH2Cl2)(2)][SbF6] were prepared and isolated by special techniques at low temperatures and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The SO2 complexes provide the first examples of coordination of the very weak Lewis base SO2 to silver(I). The SO2 molecule in [Ag(OSO)][Al(pftb)(4)] is eta(1)-O coordinated to Ag+, while the SO2 ligands in [Ag(OSO)(2/2)][SbF6] bridge two Ag+ ions in an eta(2)-O,O' (trans,trans) manner. [Ag(CH2Cl2)(2)][SbF6] contains [Ag(CH2Cl2)(2)](+) ions linked through [SbF6](-) ions to give a polymeric structure. The solid-state silver(I) ion affinities (SIA) of SO2 and CH2Cl2, based on bond lengths and corresponding valence units in the corresponding complexes and tensimetric titrations of Ag[Al(pftb)(4)] and Ag[SbF6] with SO2 vapor, show that SO2 is a weaker ligand to Ag+ than the commonly used weakly coordinating solvent CH2Cl2 and indicated that binding strength of SO2 to silver(I) in the silver(I) salts increases with increasing size of the corresponding counteranion ([Al(pftb)(4)](-)>[SbF6](-)). The experimental findings are in good agreement with theoretical gas-phase ligand-binding energies of [Ag(L)(n)](+) (L = SO2, CH2Cl2; n = 1, 2) and solid-state enthalpies obtained from Born-Fajans-Haber cycles by using the volume-based thermodynamics (VBT) approach. Bonding analysis (VB, NBO, MO) of [Ag(L)(n)](+) suggests that these complexes are almost completely stabilized by electrostatic interaction, that is, monopole-dipole interaction, with almost no covalent contribution by electron donation from the ligand orbitals into the vacant 5s orbital of Ag+. All experimental findings and theoretical considerations demonstrate that SO2 is less covalently bound to Ag+ than CH2Cl2 and support the thesis that SO2 is a polar but non-coordinating solvent towards Ag+.
Chemical bonding in chalcogenides: the concept of multi-centre hyperbonding

Abstract:The precise nature of chemical-bonding interactions in amorphous, and crystalline, chalcogenides is still unclear due to the complexity arising from the delocalization of bonding, and non-bonding, electrons. Although an increasing degree of electron delocalization for elements down a column of the periodic table is widely recognized, its influence on chemical-bonding interactions, and on consequent material properties, of chalcogenides has not previously been comprehensively understood from an atomistic point of view. Here, we provide a chemical-bonding framework for understanding the behaviour of chalcogenides (and, in principle, other lone-pair materials) by studying prototypical Telluride non-volatile-memory, 'phase-change' materials (PCMs), and related chalcogenide compounds, via density-functional-theory, molecular-dynamics (DFT-MD) simulations. Identification of the presence of previously unconsidered multi-centre 'hyperbonding' (lone-pair-antibonding-orbital) interactions elucidates not only the origin of various material properties, and their contrast in magnitude between amorphous and crystalline phases, but also the very similar chemical-bonding nature between crystalline PCMs and one of the bonding subgroups (with the same bond length) found in amorphous PCMs, in marked contrast to existing viewpoints. The structure-property relationship established from this new bonding-interaction perspective will help in designing improved chalcogenide materials for diverse applications, based on a fundamental chemical-bonding point of view.

The stabilities and bonding of [MDn](+) and [M(18-crown-6)](+) (M = Ag, Li, n = 4-8) complexes were studied with theoretical calculations. The calculations predicted that D6 adopts a puckered C(i) symmetric structure in the gas phase in contrast to previous reports. 18-Crown-6 was calculated to bind more strongly to Li(+) and Ag(+) than D6. (29)Si[(1)H] NMR results in solution, and calculations in the gas phase established that a hard Lewis acid Li(+) binds more strongly to D6 than Ag(+). A comparison of the [MD(n)](+) complex stabilities showed D7 to form the most stable metal complexes in the gas phase and the solid state and explained why [AgD7][SbF6] was isolated in a previous reaction where ring transformations resulted in an equilibrium of [AgD(n)](+) complexes. Abstract:Silver sulfide in monoclinic phase (α-Ag2S) has attracted significant attention owing to its metal-like ductility and promising thermoelectric properties near room temperature. However, first-principles studies on this material by density functional theory calculations have been challenging as both the symmetry and atomic structure of α-Ag2S predicted from such calculations are inconsistent with experimental findings. Here, we propose that a dynamical approach is imperative for correctly describing the structure of α-Ag2S. The approach is based on a combination of ab initio molecular dynamics simulation and deliberately chosen density functional considering both proper treatment of the van der Waals interaction and on-site Coulomb interaction. The obtained lattice parameters and atomic site occupations of α-Ag2S are in good agreement with experimental data. A stable phonon spectrum at room temperature can be obtained from this structure, which also yields a bandgap in accord with experimental measurements. The dynamical approach thus paves the way for studying this important ductile semiconductor in not only thermoelectric but also optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:For a comparison of the interaction modes of various chalcogen‐bond donors, 2‐chalcogeno‐imidazolium salts have been designed, synthesized, and studied by single crystal X‐ray diffraction, solution NMR and DFT as well as for their ability to act as activators in an SN1‐type substitution reaction. Their interaction modes in solution were elucidated based on NMR diffusion and chemical shift perturbation experiments, which were supported by DFT‐calculations. Our finding is that going from lighter to the heavier chalcogens, hydrogen bonding plays a less, while chalcogen bonding an increasingly important role for the coordination of anions. Anion‐π interactions also show importance, especially for the sulfur and selenium derivatives.

Abstract:Ag 2 Q-based (Q = S, Se, Te) silver chalcogenides show great potential in thermoelectrics due to their suitable band gaps, high electron mobilities, and even remarkable ductility. Particularly, Ag 2 S and Ag 2 S/Se/Te solid solutions have been reported with both good ductility and thermoelectric performance, which are extremely suitable for the application in flexible wearables. However, the underlying mechanism of the native n-type conduction and p-type undopability for Ag 2 Q remains elusive. Herein, we use first-principles calculations based on density functional theory combined with GW correction to investigate the defect chemistry in Ag 2 Q. It is found that the site potential and Voronoi volume deviations resulting from Ag interstitials are noticeably smaller than those caused by Ag vacancies, which makes Ag interstitials with low formation energy more desirable during preparation, contributing to the native n-type conduction. The small and even negative dopability windows, on the other hand, account for the p-type undopability of Ag 2 Q. The calculated carrier concentrations of pristine Ag 2 Q are well consistent with the experimental observations, validating the reliability of our defect calculations. This work provides valuable guidance for first-principles calculation of defect chemistry in other narrow-gap semiconductors.

Abstract:The spectroscopic constants (R e , T e , ω e , B e ) are determined for 46 doublet and quartet low-lying states of the molecules AgTe and AgSe using CASSCF/MRCI (single and double excitations plus Davidson correction) calculations. The equilibrium bond length R e , and the vibrational frequency ω e of the ground state of both molecules have also been investigated using the density functional theory (DFT) incorporating eight different functionals along with different basis sets. The potential energy and permanent dipole moment curves of 23 states of each molecule have been investigated and depicted. This study represents the first theoretical investigation of the molecules AgSe and AgTe.

Abstract:The chemical bond is one of the most powerful, yet much debated concepts in chemistry, explaining property trends in solids. Recently, a novel type of chemical bonding was identified in several higher chalcogenides, characterized by a unique property portfolio, unconventional bond breaking, and sharing of about one electron between adjacent atoms. This metavalent bond is a fundamental type of bonding in solids, besides covalent, ionic, and metallic bonding, raising the pertinent question as to whether there is a well-defined transition between metavalent and covalent bonds. Here, three different pseudo-binary lines, namely, GeTe1−xSex, Sb2Te3(1−x)Se3x, and Bi2−2xSb2xSe3, are studied, and a sudden change in several properties, including optical absorption ε2(ω), optical dielectric constant ε∞, Born effective charge Z*, electrical conductivity, as well as bond breaking behavior for a critical Se or Sb concentration, is evidenced. These findings provide a blueprint to experimentally explore the influence of metavalent bonding on attractive properties of phase-change materials and thermoelectrics. Particularly important is its impact on optical properties, which can be tailored by the amount of electrons shared between adjacent atoms. This correlation can be used to design optoelectronic materials and to explore systematic changes in chemical bonding with stoichiometry and atomic arrangement.

Abstract:Metal chalcogenides are a special class of semiconducting materials characterized by their rich structures and compositions, making them a promising option for a broad range of applications in the field of inorganic chemistry. However, the path forward is not without its challenges, notably in the realms of interface management and enhancing carrier concentration. To address these issues, we solvothermally synthesized two novel chalcogenidoantimonates [Zn(tren)] 2 Sb 2 Se 5 ( 1 ) [tren = tris (2-aminoethyl) amine] and [Zn(tepa)H] 2 Sb 2 S 6 ( 2 ) (tepa = tetraethylenepentamine) utilizing transition metal Zn by band gap optimization strategy in the visible region. Both compounds exhibited distinct zero-dimensional cluster structures, with transition metal complex cations acting as structure-directing agents. A comprehensive analysis of the electronic structure, band gap, and photocurrent response of these crystals was undertaken, revealing significantly enhanced photocatalytic properties compared to preceding studies. This research underscores the potential of antimony chalcogenides in the realm of photoelectric properties and promotes the applications of chalcogenides.

Chalcogen Bonding in the Molecular Dimers of WCh2 (Ch = S, Se, Te): On the Basic Understanding of the Local Interfacial and Interlayer Bonding Environment in 2D Layered Tungsten Dichalcogenides

Abstract:Layered two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides and their heterostructures are of current interest, owing to the diversity of their applications in many areas of materials nanoscience and technologies. With this in mind, we have examined the three molecular dimers of the tungsten dichalcogenide series, (WCh2)2 (Ch = S, Se, Te), using density functional theory to provide insight into which interactions, and their specific characteristics, are responsible for the interfacial/interlayer region in the room temperature 2H phase of WCh2 crystals. Our calculations at various levels of theory suggested that the Te···Te chalcogen bonding in (WTe2)2 is weak, whereas the Se···Se and S···S bonding interactions in (WSe2)2 and (WS2)2, respectively, are of the van der Waals type. The presence and character of Ch···Ch chalcogen bonding interactions in the dimers of (WCh2)2 are examined with a number of theoretical approaches and discussed, including charge-density-based approaches, such as the quantum theory of atoms in molecules, interaction region indicator, independent gradient model, and reduced density gradient non-covalent index approaches. The charge-density-based topological features are shown to be concordant with the results that originate from the extrema of potential on the electrostatic surfaces of WCh2 monomers. A natural bond orbital analysis has enabled us to suggest a number of weak hyperconjugative charge transfer interactions between the interacting monomers that are responsible for the geometry of the (WCh2)2 dimers at equilibrium. In addition to other features, we demonstrate that there is no so-called van der Waals gap between the monolayers in two-dimensional layered transition metal tungsten dichalcogenides, which are gapless, and that the (WCh2)2 dimers may be prototypes for a basic understanding of the physical chemistry of the chemical bonding environments associated with the local interfacial/interlayer regions in layered 2H-WCh2 nanoscale systems.
Exploring the Influence of (n-1)d Subvalence Correlation and of Spin-Orbit Coupling on Chalcogen Bonding

Abstract:This article presents a comprehensive computational investigation into chalcogen bonding interactions, focusing specifically on elucidating the role of subvalence (n$-$1)d and (n$-$1)sp correlation. The incorporation of inner-shell (n$-$1)d correlation leads to a decrease in interaction energies for chalcogen-bonded systems (at least those studied herein), contradicting the observations regarding halogen bonding documented by Kesharwani et al. in \textit{J. Phys. Chem. A}, \textbf{2018}, 122 (8), 2184-2197. The significance of (n$-$1)sp subvalence correlation appears to be lower by an order of magnitude. Notably, among the various components of interaction energies computed at the PNO-LCCSD(T) or DF-CCSD levels, we identify the PNO-LMP2 or DF-MP2 component of the (n$-$1)d correlation as predominant. Furthermore, we delve into the impact of second-order spin-orbit coupling (SOC2) on these interactions. Specifically, for the Te complexes, SOC2 effects rival (n$-$1)d correlation in importance; for the Se complexes, SOC2 is much less important. Generally, SOC2 stabilizes monomers more than dimers, resulting in reduced binding of the latter. Notably, at equilibrium and stretched geometries, SOC2 and (n$-$1)d destabilize the complex; however, at compressed geometries, they exhibit opposing effects, with (n$-$1)d becoming stabilizing.

Abstract:In our efforts to systematically investigate the influences of terminal groups, ligand spacers, and counteranions on the framework formations of the AgI complexes with thioether ligands, four structurally related flexible N-containing heterocyclic thioethers, bis(benzothiazol-2-ylsulfanyl)methane (L1), 1,3-bis(benzothiazol-2-ylsulfanyl)propane (L2), 1,4-bis(benzothiazol-2-ylsulfanyl)butane (L3) and 1,5-bis(benzothiazol-2-ylsulfanyl)pentane (L4), and seven new AgI complexes of these ligands, [AgL1(NO3)]∞ 1, {[AgL1](ClO4)(H2O)}2 2, {[AgL2(NO3)](CHCl3)}2 3, {[AgL3](ClO4)}∞ 4, {[AgL3](BF4)}∞ 5, {[AgL4(NO3)]CHCl3}2 6, and {[AgL4(ClO4)]2}∞ 7, have been synthesized and characterized. The crystal structures of these complexes show that all the other complexes except 4 and 5 form ligand-supported dinuclear clusters, and in 1 and 7 the dinuclear cluster units are further linked by anions to form 1D chains, and complexes 4 and 5 exhibit 1D zigzag chain structures.
