Abstract:Color-shift keying (CSK) is a modulation scheme in RGB-LED based visible light communication (VLC) where each symbol is mapped into a color of the visible spectrum. According to the IEEE 802.15.7 standard, nine valid combinations of symbols exist to construct 4, 8 or 16-CSK constellations. However, to the best of our knowledge, no formal rules are specified to determine which design performs better among the nine proposed. In this work, we presented a heuristic, machine learning-based approach to determine the best performing 8-CSK constellation and the most suitable algorithm to classify received 8-CSK modulated signals in terms of classification accuracy and bit-error rate (BER). The constellation built on the triangle with vertices at {429, 509, 564} nm scored a BER at 14 dB of 2.3E-3, 3.1E-4, 4.9E-5 and 1.6E-4 for each of the proposed algorithms that are several dBs lower than the worst performing constellations designed on the triangles {429, 564, 753} nm, {429, 564, 703} nm and {429, 564, 656} nm, demonstrating that indeed there exists a difference among the proposed designs independently of the adopted decision strategy and consequently room for improvement for the existing CSK standard.
A Ppm-Based Four-Dimensional Modulation Scheme For Visible Light Communications

Abstract:This paper presents a four-dimensional (4-D) modulation scheme combined pulse position modulation (PPM) with four-color (RGBA) light-emitting diode (LED) in a visible light communication (VLC) system. In the proposed scheme, multi LED selection is used within a symbol interval in order to decrease the cross-talk between each LED and make sure that each LED works in its linear area. Based on the maximal minimum Euclidean distance criteria, the constellations of the new 4-D modulation are constructed under the constraints of the optical power and the illumination. Moreover, the theoretical symbol error rate (SER) of the proposed scheme with maximal likelihood (ML) detection is also analyzed. Finally, we simulate the proposed scheme under both the additive white Gaussian noise channel and the practical optical channel measured from our VLC prototype. The simulation results verify the correctness of our theoretical analysis and reveal that the proposed 4-D modulation scheme outperforms the traditional color shift keying (CSK) in term of the SER.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a visible light communication (VLC) system using continuous phase modulation (CPM) and prove its advantage in energy efficiency over orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme. Furthermore, to ensure the feasibility of broadband communications in indoor optical multipath environments, we propose algorithms including linear decomposition-based channel compensation to combat the inter-symbol-interference (ISI) and correlation matrix-based highly power-efficient CPM signal reconstruction to recover the original CPM signal without multipath effects. Additionally, in the signal reconstruction algorithm, a condition-enhanced method is proposed to solve the condition number problem of correlation matrix. The algorithms are verified and evaluated in terms of the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) simulation and bit error rate (BER) experiments. The power efficiency, the fading compensation character promote the proposed CPM transceiver to be a practical VLC candidate.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) has been recognized as a promising technology for handling the continuously increasing quality of service and connectivity requirements in modern wireless communications, particularly in indoor scenarios. In this context, the present work considers the integration of two distinct modulation schemes, namely spatial modulation (SM) with space time block codes (STBCs), aiming at improving the overall VLC system reliability. Based on this and in order to further enhance the achievable transmission data rate, we integrate quasi-orthogonal STBC (QOSTBC) with SM, since relaxing the orthogonality condition of OSTBC ultimately provides a higher coding rate. Then, we generalize the developed results to any number of active light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and any M-ary pulse amplitude modulation size. Furthermore, we derive a tight and tractable upper bound for the corresponding bit error rate (BER) by considering a simple two-step decoding procedure to detect the indices of the transmitting LEDs and then decode the signal domain symbols. Notably, the obtained results demonstrate that QOSTBC with SM enhances the achievable BER compared to SM with repetition coding (RC-SM). Finally, we compare STBC-SM with both multiple active SM (MASM) and RC-SM in terms of the achievable BER and overall data rate, which further justifies the usefulness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:With the popularity of LED infrastructure and the camera on smartphone, LED-Camera visible light communication (VLC) has become a realistic and promising technology. However, the existing LED-Camera VLC has limited throughput due to the sampling manner of camera. In this paper, by introducing a polarization dimension, we propose a hybrid modulation scheme with LED and polarization signals to boost throughput. Nevertheless, directly mixing LED and polarized signals may suffer from channel conflict. We exploit well-designed packet structure and Symmetric Return-to-Zero Inverted (SRZI) coding to overcome the conflict. In addition, in the demodulation of hybrid signal, we alleviate the noise of polarization on the LED signals by the polarization background subtraction. We further propose a pixel-free approach to correct the perspective distortion caused by the shift of view angle by adding polarizers around the liquid crystal array. We build a prototype of this hybrid modulation scheme using off-the-shelf optical components. We enhance the basic version (Zou et al. 2023) of preliminary work by analyzing the performance with FSK modulation. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the hybrid modulation scheme can achieve reliable communication, achieving 13.4 kbps throughput, which is 400 % of the existing state-of-the-art LED-Camera VLC.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel high dimensional constellation design scheme for visible light communication (VLC) systems employing red/green/blue light emitting diodes (RGB LEDs). It is in fact a generalized color shift keying (CSK) scheme which does not suffer efficiency loss due to a constrained sum intensity for all constellation symbols. Crucial lighting requirements are included as optimization constraints. To control non-linear distortion, the optical peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) of LEDs is individually constrained. Fixing the average optical power, our scheme is able to achieve much lower bit-error rate (BER) than conventional schems especially when illumination color is more "unbalanced". When cross-talks exist among the multiple optical channels, we apply a singular value decomposition (SVD)-based pre-equalizer and redesign the constellations, and such scheme is shown to outperform post-equalized schemes based on zero-forcing or linear minimum-mean-squared-error (LMMSE) principles. To further reduce system BER, a binary switching algorithm (BSA) is employed the first time for labeling high dimensional constellation. We thus obtains the optimal bits-to-symbols mapping.

Abstract:Color shift key (CSK) modulation method is a new modulation method for visible light communication (VLC) system, which transmits information through the light's color property of a multi-color light source, typically a RGB LED. This paper analyzes the illumination and communication performances of CSK signals, including flicker effect, dimming range, color rendering index (CRI), luminous efficacy rate (LER), variable data rate and error probability, and also generates the optimized power weights combination group of the red, green and blue light emitted from a RGB LED, which meet the current illumination requirements, through a 2 level non-uniform signaling method, and analytical and simulation result shows a not good enough bit error rate (BER) performance. Maximum correlation coefficient and minimum RGB space distance demodulation methods with better BER performance are also discussed, simulation result shows a close relationship between the BER performance and both the entire valid CSK signals and demodulation method. Finally, a tradeoff of the CRI is discussed.

Abstract:Recently, visible light communication (VLC) has become a hot topic owing to its advantages, such as high security, high capacity, and antielectromagnetic interference. VLC has become a potential candidate for indoor access networks due to the feasibility of combining illumination and communication. However, intersymbol interference and random phase rotation induced by the transmission channel will decrease the system performance. Traditional constant modulus algorithm (CMA) performs well in converging constellation, but random phase rotation still exists since CMA is insensitive to phase. We demonstrate an optical fiber and visible light integrated communication system. 960-Mbps multiband geometrically shaping (GS) quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)-8 transmission is realized. Modified learning vector quantization is employed after CMA equalization to mitigate the impairment induced by both optical fiber and visible light channel. Experimental results indicate the feasibility of the proposed method. The Q factor of GS QAM-8 could be enhanced by 5.98 dB with the proposed method. Abstract:Benefiting from the sparse representation of channels in the delay-Doppler (DD)-domain, orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS)-based visible light communication (VLC) systems can compensate different channel impairments to detect transmitted symbols with the knowledge of channel state information (CSI). However, in prior OTFS-based VLC works, the effective channel estimation method has not been fully explored yet. In this paper, we derive the relation equation between the channel impulse response (CIR) and the received DD-domain pilot signal subblock to provide an efficient channel estimation method based on sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) algorithm. Numerical results have shown that the proposed embedded pilot-aided DD-SBL channel estimation scheme significantly outperforms other conventional methods in terms of estimation accuracy and bit error rate (BER) performance for practical scenarios.

Abstract:Visible-light communications (VLCs) are energy-efficient communication means and a popular alternative to the radio-frequency technology. VLCs are referred to as free-space optical communication systems which can be built upon the existing lighting infrastructure. Due to the cost-effectiveness concern, light emitting diodes (LEDs) are adopted as the visible-light sources. In this paper, we demonstrate a VLC prototype using white LEDs and pulse position modulation (PPM), which is aimed for short-range communications. Based on the acquired VLC signal waveforms, characteristics related to electronic components, LEDs, and photo diodes (PDs) are studied thoroughly. The non-square shape of received pulses is modeled by new template functions involving rising and setting time intervals. A new PPM demodulator is devised thereupon. Meanwhile, the probability density function of noise is derived using the Edgeworth expansion. As all of the aforementioned aspects are taken into account, the VLC quality-of-service (QoS) in terms of package error rate and throughput is studied in this work. Experiments are taken to justify the theoretical QoS metric and evaluate our proposed new PPM demodulator.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a newfound in the two-dimensional Visible Light Communication (VLC) system, i.e., additional modulation orders are generated in the receiver. Meanwhile, an algorithm named High/Low order Bit Interleaving (HLBI) is proposed in a formulated VLC Multiple-Input-Single-Output (MISO) model, which aims to decrease part of these orders. A data rate of 1.24Gbit/s is achieved in 1.3 m indoor Line-Of-Sight (LOS) scenario with the Bit Error Rate (BER) is under 3.8×10−3. Since the algorithm also aids STBC decoding, the Q factor can be improved to 1.92dB.

Abstract:In this paper, the new family of spherical color-shift keying (SCSK) constellations is proposed for visible light communication (VLC) systems. Specifically, the constant-intensity constraint (CIC) for conventional color-shift keying (CSK) schemes, which originates from the requirement of non-flickering illumination, confines the constellation symbols on a two-dimensional (2D) plane of the three-dimensional (3D) intensity space. To fully utilize the potential degree of freedom offered by the 3D intensity space, we propose to expand the envelope of CSK constellations by replacing the constant intensity with a new spherical intensity constraint, aiming to maximize the minimum Euclidean distance (MED). More explicitly, we design the robust SCSK constellations with and without white color balance (CB), respectively. Particularly, we transform the constellation design problem to the so-called spherical circle packing (SCP) problem, which is resolved based on the spherical quasi-physical (SQP) model. Then, we propose the so-called spherical heuristic quasi-physical algorithm (SHQPA) integrating the binary search algorithm (BSA) and the configuration update algorithms (CUA) to obtain the optimal SCSK constellations. Furthermore, we also study the corresponding bit-to-symbol mapping rules for the generated SCSK constellations. Simulation results show that the new family of SCSK constellations outperforms the conventional CSK counterparts.

Abstract:A novel visible-light communication (VLC) system with 4 × 1 multi-input–single-output (MISO) channels is designed. In the system, the filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) and offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OQAM) techniques are used to generate downlink signals. The principles and implementation methods are proposed and analyzed, and the light intensity and received light power distribution of four LED emitters are discussed. The results demonstrate that it not only satisfies the requirements of indoor information access but also provides daily lighting. The used FBMC-OQAM signals exhibit better reception performance than orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals. The system used has a lower bit error rate (BER) and larger access bandwidth compared to a 1 × 1 single-input–single-output (SISO) system. It has the potential for application advantages in future indoor VLC system applications.

Abstract:In this letter, we consider intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) channel in the visible light communication (VLC) systems with multiple transmitter phosphor-based white light emitting diodes (LED) and single receiver avalanche photo diode (APD). We proposed a Multiple Layer Phase Shift Linear Space-time Block Code (MLPS-LSTBC). We show that our proposed code for VLC has the following main features: (a) The symbol transmission rate is $N/(N+M-1)$, where $N$ is the number of transmitter LED and $M$ denotes the number of shift intervals contained by a single codeword per layer; (b) zero-forcing receiver can transform the virtual MIMO matrix channel into parallel sub-channels even without channel state information at the receiver side (CSIR); (c) Our MLPS-LSTBC can asymptotically enhance the spectral efficiency by $\min (M\text{,}N)$, which is attractive for LED-based VLC with limited electrical modulation bandwidth. By simulations, we achieve the record data rate of 1.5 Gb/s with the bit error rate performance below the FEC limit of $2\times10^{-3}$ via multiple 100-MBaud transmission of OOK signal.

Abstract:Inter-symbol interference (ISI) is one of the key problems that seriously limit transmission data rate in high-speed VLC systems. To eliminate ISI and further improve the system performance, series of equalization schemes have been widely investigated. As an adaptive algorithm commonly used in wireless communication, RLS is also suitable for visible light communication due to its quick convergence and better performance. In this paper, for the first time we experimentally demonstrate a high-speed RGB-LED based WDM VLC system employing carrier-less amplitude and phase (CAP) modulation and recursive least square (RLS) based adaptive equalization. An aggregate data rate of 4.5Gb/s is successfully achieved over 1.5-m indoor free space transmission with the bit error rate (BER) below the 7% forward error correction (FEC) limit of 3.8x10-3. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest data rate ever achieved in RGB-LED based VLC systems. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Visible light communication, as a promising future wireless communication technology, has been considered as an attractive solution for indoor positioning systems. An indoor visible light positioning system based on cooperative localization is proposed to support illumination and positioning simultaneously. By cooperation among agents, the positioning system can work in a harsh environment, where a two-light-emitting diodes positioning scheme is proposed as an example specifically. The Bayesian framework and factor graph are introduced to describe the location problems, while the sum-product algorithm is adopted to deal with the positioning process and determine the receivers' location. Moreover, simulations are carried out to demonstrate that the proposed system can achieve centimeter-scale positioning accuracy, and the feasibility is also verified. (C) The Authors.
