Abstract:X-ray ghost imaging (XGI) has opened up a new avenue for damage-free medical imaging.Here energy-selective spectroscopic XGI under poor illumination is demonstrated with a single-pixel detector for the first time.The key device was a specially fabricated Au mask incorporating a new modulation pattern design,by which means images of a real object were obtained with a spatial resolution of 10 μm and a spectral energy resolution of about 1.5 keV.Compressed sensing was also introduced to improve the image quality.Our proof-of-principle experiment extends the methodology of XGI to make possible the retrieval of spectral images with only a single-pixel detector,and paves the way for potential applications in many fields such as biology,material science and environmental sensing.
Energy-resolving large area X-ray imaging enabled by stacked metal halide scintillators

Abstract:Abstract Conventional energy-integration black-white X-ray imaging lacks spectral information of X-ray photons. Although X-ray spectra (energy) can be distinguished by photon-counting technique typically with CdZnTe detectors, it is very challenging to be applied to large-area flat-panel X-ray imaging (FPXI). Herein, we design multi-layer stacked scintillators of different X-ray absorption capabilities and scintillation spectrums, in this scenario, the X-ray energy can be discriminated by detecting the emission spectra of each scintillator, therefore the spectral-resolving X-ray imaging can be easily obtained by color or multispectral visible-light camera in one single shot of X-ray. To verify this idea, stacked multilayer scintillators based on several emerging metal halides were fabricated in the cost-effective and scalable solution process, and proof-of-concept multi-energy FPXI was experimentally demonstrated. The energy-resolving X-ray image of a “bone-muscle” model clearly showed the details that were invisible in conventional energy-integration FPXI. By stacking four layers of specifically designed multilayer scintillators with appropriate thicknesses, a prototype FPXI with four energy channels was realized, proving its extendibility to multispectral or even hyperspectral X-ray imaging. This study provides a facile and effective strategy to realize energy-resolved flat-panel X-ray imaging.

Abstract:Ghost imaging is an indirect system that allows the imaging of an object without directly seeing the object. The speckle pattern that contains the information about light and objects has increasingly become a popular topic in pseudothermal light ghost imaging. However, existing research still has encountered problems of poor imaging quality and slow sampling speeds. We propose a ghost imaging method based on N-order speckle patterns to recover the object (NSGI). The N-order speckle patterns combine N independent laser speckles individually produced by passing an expanded and collimated He-Ne laser through a digital micro-mirror device (DMD). The sampling frequency can be improved by controlling the trigger signals of different DMDs. The results of the simulation and experiment have verified that our method can increase sampling speed and reconstruction accuracy. In addition, NSGI can be applied to more applications by designing multiple independent speckles with different properties. (C) 2018 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).

Abstract:X-ray “ghost” imaging has drawn great attention for its potential to obtain images with a high resolution and lower radiation dose in medical diagnosis, even with only a single-pixel detector. However, it is hard to realize with a portable x-ray source due to its low flux. Here, we demonstrate a computational x-ray ghost imaging scheme where a real bucket detector and specially designed high-efficiency modulation masks are used, together with a robust deep learning algorithm in which a compressed set of Hadamard matrices is incorporated into a multi-level wavelet convolutional neural network. With a portable incoherent x-ray source of ∼37 µm diameter, we have obtained an image of a real object from only 18.75% of the Nyquist sampling rate. A high imaging resolution of ∼10 µm has been achieved, which is required for cancer detection and so represents a concrete step toward the realization of a practical low cost x-ray ghost imaging camera for applications in biomedicine, archeology, material science, and so forth.

Abstract: Conventional imaging at low light level requires hundreds of detected photons per pixel to suppress the Poisson noise for accurate reflectivity inference. In this letter, we propose a high-efficiency photon-limited imaging technique, called first-photon ghost imaging, which recovers image from the first-photon detection by exploiting the physics of low-flux measurements and the framework of ghost imaging. The experimental results demonstrated that it could retrieve an image by only 0.1 photon detection per pixel, which is three orders lower than the conventional imaging technique. The SNR model of the system has been established for noise analysing. Our technique is supposed to have applications in many fields, ranging from biological microscopy to remote sensing.

Abstract:The use of x-ray imaging in medicine and other research is well known. Generally, the image quality is proportional to the total flux, but high photon energy could severely damage the specimen, so how to decrease the radiation dose while maintaining image quality is a fundamental problem. In "ghost" imaging, an image is retrieved from a known patterned illumination field and the total intensity transmitted through the object collected by a bucket detector. Using a table-top x-ray source we have realized ghost imaging of plane and natural objects with ultra-low radiation on the order of single photons. Compared with conventional x-ray imaging, a higher contrast-to-noise ratio is obtained for the same radiation dose. This new technique could greatly reduce radiation damage of biological specimens.

Abstract:Ghost imaging based on the high-order correlation of optical field has developed rapidly and has been extended to the x-ray region. However, the limited flux leads to severe image deterioration. Here, an approach of Fourier-transform ghost imaging with super-Rayleigh speckles is proposed to realize high quality ghost imaging at low photon flux level. The super-Rayleigh speckles are designed by optimizing binary modulating screens based on the direct binary search algorithm. The experimental results show that the speckle contrast can be greatly enhanced and high visibility Fourier-transform diffraction pattern of the sample can be obtained. The sample's image in spatial domain is successfully achieved even if the detected photon level decreases to 0.1 photons/pixel. This method is of great importance for high-resolution imaging in the photon-limited scenarios, especially for laboratory x-ray systems.

Abstract:Imaging with hard x-rays is an invaluable tool in medicine, biology, materials science, and cultural heritage. Propagation-based x-ray phase-contrast imaging and tomography have been mostly used to resolve micrometer-scale structures inside weakly absorbing objects as well as inside dense specimens. Indirect x-ray detection has been the key technology to achieve up to sub-micrometer spatial resolutions, albeit inefficiently and hence at the expense of increased radiation dose to the specimen. A promising approach to low-dose imaging and high spatial resolution even at high x-ray energies is ghost imaging, which could use single-pixel, yet efficient direct x-ray detectors made of high-density materials. However, phase contrast has not yet been realised with x-ray ghost imaging. We present an approach which exploits both the advantages of x-ray ghost imaging and the high sensitivity of phase-contrast imaging. In comparison with existing techniques, our method is efficient and achieves high-fidelity x-ray ghost images with phase contrast, accurate density resolution and dramatically higher spatial resolution. The method is scalable to practical tomography with large fields of view, micrometer spatial resolution, and with high-energy x-rays above 100 keV. It is also applicable to other phase-sensitive imaging techniques and with other probes such as neutrons, alpha rays, and muons, for which high spatial resolution detectors are limited or even not available.
25-Fold Resolution Enhancement of X-ray Microscopy Using Multipixel Ghost Imaging

Abstract:Hard x-ray imaging is indispensable across diverse fields owing to its high penetrability. However, the resolution of traditional x-ray imaging modalities, such as computed tomography (CT) systems, is constrained by factors including beam properties, the absence of optical components, and detection resolution. As a result, typical resolution in commercial imaging systems is limited to a few hundred microns. This study advances high-photon-energy imaging by extending the concept of computational ghost imaging to multipixel ghost imaging with x-rays. We demonstrate a remarkable enhancement in resolution from 500 microns to approximately 20 microns for an image spanning 0.9 by 1 cm^2, comprised of 400,000 pixels and involving only 1000 realizations. Furthermore, we present a high-resolution CT reconstruction using our method, revealing enhanced visibility and resolution. Our achievement is facilitated by an innovative x-ray lithography technique and the computed tiling of images captured by each detector pixel. Importantly, this method can be scaled up for larger images without sacrificing the short measurement time, thereby opening intriguing possibilities for noninvasive high-resolution imaging of small features that are invisible with the present modalities.

Abstract:We demonstrate experimentally the ability to use a single pixel detector for two-dimensional high-speed and high-resolution x-ray imaging. We image the rotation of a spinning chopper at 100-kHz at spatial resolution of about 15 microns by using the computational ghost imaging approach. The technique we develop can be used for the imaging of high-speed periodic dynamics or periodically stimulated effects with a large field of view and at low dose.

Abstract:We present a practical experimental realization of transmission x-ray ghost imaging using synchrotron light. Hard x-rays from an undulator were split by a Si 200 crystal in Laue geometry to produce two copies of a speckled incident beam. Both speckle beams were simultaneously measured on a CCD camera. The sample was inserted in one of the two beams, and the corresponding image was integrated over the camera extent to synthesize a bucket signal. We show the successful x-ray ghost image reconstruction of two samples and discuss different reconstruction strategies. We also demonstrate a method for measuring the point spread function of a ghost imaging system, which can be used to quantify the resolution of the ghost imaging reconstructions and quantitatively compare different reconstruction approaches. Our experimental results are discussed in view of future practical applications of x-ray ghost imaging, including a means for parallel ghost imaging.

Abstract: A simple and robust experiment demonstrating computational ghost imaging with structured illumination and a single-pixel detector has been performed. Our experimental setup utilizes a general computer for generating pseudo-randomly patterns on the liquid crystal display screen to illuminate a partially-transmissive object. With an incoherent light source, this object is imaged. The effects of light source, light path, and the number of measurements on the reconstruction quality of the object are discussed both theoretically and experimentally. The realization of computational ghost imaging with computer liquid crystal display is a further setup toward the practical application of ghost imaging with ordinary incoherent light.

Abstract:Compared with traditional imaging methods, the non‐local characteristics of ghost imaging have the ability to greatly reduce the radiation dose of X‐ray imaging in principle, and has important application prospects in radiation‐sensitive fields such as biomedicine. Here a specially developed beam splitter applicable for the efficient implementation of X‐ray ghost imaging is described.X‐ray ghost imaging with a crystal beam splitter has advantages in highly efficient imaging due to the simultaneous acquisition of signals from both the object beam and reference beam. However, beam splitting with a large field of view, uniform distribution and high correlation has been a great challenge up to now. Therefore, a dedicated beam splitter has been developed by optimizing the optical layout of a synchrotron radiation beamline and the fabrication process of a Laue crystal. A large field of view, consistent size, uniform intensity distribution and high correlation were obtained simultaneously for the two split beams. Modulated by a piece of copper foam upstream of the splitter, a correlation of 92% between the speckle fields of the object and reference beam and a Glauber function of 1.25 were achieved. Taking advantage of synthetic aperture X‐ray ghost imaging (SAXGI), a circuit board of size 880 × 330 pixels was successfully imaged with high fidelity. In addition, even though 16 measurements corresponding to a sampling rate of 1% in SAXGI were used for image reconstruction, the skeleton structure of the circuit board can still be determined. In conclusion, the specially developed beam splitter is applicable for the efficient implementation of X‐ray ghost imaging.

Abstract:We proposed a method for polarization ghost imaging based on single photon counting. With the time-correlated single-photon-counting technique, we can construct photon time distribution histograms and select a distance gate to accurately estimate the light intensity. Experiments are performed to realize discrimination of the object from the background of different materials in weak illumination. In the situation that ambient noise is significantly stronger than the signal, our method still can retrieve an image as ambient noise is mostly filtered out through distance gate selection. We suppose that our method may facilitate applications in remote target discrimination and biological imaging.

Abstract:High-intensity ultrashort X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) pulses are revolutionizing the study of fundamental nonlinear x-ray matter interactions and coupled electronic and nuclear dynamics. To fully exploit the potential of this powerful tool for advanced x-ray spectroscopies, a noninvasive spectral characterization of incident stochastic XFEL pulses with high resolution is a key requirement. Here we present a methodology that combines high-acceptance angle-resolved photoelectron time-of-flight spectroscopy and ghost imaging to enhance the quality of spectral characterization of x-ray free-electron laser pulses. Implementation of this noninvasive high-resolution x-ray diagnostic can greatly benefit the ultrafast x-ray spectroscopy community by functioning as a transparent beamsplitter for applications such as transient absorption spectroscopy in averaging mode as well as covariance-based x-ray nonlinear spectroscopies in single-shot mode where the shot-to-shot fluctuations inherent to a self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) XFEL pulse are a powerful asset.
