Abstract: Conventional imaging at low light level requires hundreds of detected photons per pixel to suppress the Poisson noise for accurate reflectivity inference. In this letter, we propose a high-efficiency photon-limited imaging technique, called first-photon ghost imaging, which recovers image from the first-photon detection by exploiting the physics of low-flux measurements and the framework of ghost imaging. The experimental results demonstrated that it could retrieve an image by only 0.1 photon detection per pixel, which is three orders lower than the conventional imaging technique. The SNR model of the system has been established for noise analysing. Our technique is supposed to have applications in many fields, ranging from biological microscopy to remote sensing.

Abstract:Conventional imaging at low light levels requires hundreds of detected photons per pixel to suppress the Poisson noise for accurate reflectivity inference. We propose a high-efficiency photon-limited imaging technique, called fast first-photon ghost imaging, which recovers the image by conditional averaging of the reference patterns selected by the first-photon detection signal. Our technique merges the physics of low-flux measurements with the framework of computational ghost imaging. Experimental results demonstrate that it can reconstruct an image from less than 0.1 detected photon per pixel, which is three orders of magnitude less than conventional imaging techniques. A signal-to-noise ratio model of the system is established for noise analysis. With less data manipulation and shorter time requirements, our technique has potential applications in many fields, ranging from biological microscopy to remote sensing.

Abstract:We show theoretically that photon counting technique can be used to obtain ghost imaging as long as the number distribution of photon source is non-Poissonian; the visibility of image could be either negative or positive, depending on the photon statistical properties. The visibility of photon counting ghost imaging can be enhanced using higher order correlations. With taking advantage of high speed photon counting CCD and detector, fast imaging can be achieved.

Abstract:The rapid development of single-photon detection technology offers the possibility for an imaging system to go beyond traditional limits. Recently, single-photon imagers based on the upconversion technique have achieved unprecedentedly high resolution and noise tolerance in 3-D imaging. Nevertheless, the limited imaging range, complicated optical path, and long data acquisition time impose remaining challenges to practical applications. In this work, we build an upconversion single-photon imager for full-range and accurate 3-D imaging. A compact all-fiber design allows our system to work robustly in an open environment. Compared to the previous imagers, the imaging speed is increased by three orders of magnitude due to the high upconversion efficiency and photon-efficient algorithm. With the application of a high-repetition laser and a nanosecond optical delay line (ODL), we achieve full-range imaging under the upconversion scheme against high solar background noise. For close-up scenes, our imager achieves ultrahigh axial resolution up to 20 mu m, which is not affected by the time jitter or pileup effect of the single-photon detector. Our proposal can stimulate practical applications in sophisticated scenarios.

Abstract:Imaging at low light levels has drawn much attention. In this paper, a method is experimentally demonstrated to realize computational imaging under weak illumination conditions. In our experiment, only one single-photon detector was used to capture the photons. With the time-correlated single-photon-counting technique, photons at a quite low level can be recorded and the time distribution histograms were constructed. The intensity of the light can be estimated from the histograms. The detection model was discussed, and clear images were obtained through a ghost-imaging algorithm. In addition, we propose a modified algorithm for the conventional ghost-imaging method that works more efficiently than the traditional ghost-imaging algorithm. Moreover, this method provides a solution for three-dimensional imaging combining with the time of flight of the photons.

Abstract:Photon-limited imaging technique is desired in tasks of capturing and reconstructing images by detecting a small number of photons. However, it is still a challenge to achieve high photon-efficiency. Here, we propose a novel photon-limited imaging technique that explores the consistency of photon detection probability in a single pulse and light intensity distribution in a single-pixel correlated imaging system. We demonstrated theoretically and experimentally that our technique can reconstruct a high-quality 3D image by using only one pulse each frame, thereby achieving a high photon efficiency of 0.01 detected photons per pixel. Long-distance field experiments for 100 km cooperative target and 3 km practical target are conducted to verify its feasibility. Compared with the conventional single-pixel imaging, which requires hundreds or thousands of pulses per frame, our technique saves two orders of magnitude in the consumption of total light power and acquisition time.

Abstract:Low-light-level imaging techniques have application in many diverse fields, ranging from biological sciences to security. We demonstrate a single-photon imaging system based on a time-gated inten- sified CCD (ICCD) camera in which the image of an object can be inferred from very few detected photons. We show that a ghost-imaging configuration, where the image is obtained from photons that have never interacted with the object, is a useful approach for obtaining images with high signal-to-noise ratios. The use of heralded single-photons ensures that the background counts can be virtually eliminated from the recorded images. By applying techniques of compressed sensing and associated image reconstruction, we obtain high-quality images of the object from raw data comprised of fewer than one detected photon per image pixel.

Abstract:Photon-limited imaging has significant application under extreme environments, in which the photon efficiency is an important parameter. In this paper, we investigate the photon efficiency of computational ghost imaging with single-photon detection. By exploiting the Poisson statistical characteristics of single-photon counting, the relationships between the photon efficiency and the signal-to-noise ratio of the retrieved image are theoretically obtained, and both are closely related to the distribution characteristics of target and spatial modulation in the ghost imaging framework. To verify the availability of the built theoretical model for the photon efficiency, a specific computational ghost imaging with a binary object and the first-photon imaging algorithm is rigorously demonstrated in theory and in experiment. Abstract:We proposed a method for polarization ghost imaging based on single photon counting. With the time-correlated single-photon-counting technique, we can construct photon time distribution histograms and select a distance gate to accurately estimate the light intensity. Experiments are performed to realize discrimination of the object from the background of different materials in weak illumination. In the situation that ambient noise is significantly stronger than the signal, our method still can retrieve an image as ambient noise is mostly filtered out through distance gate selection. We suppose that our method may facilitate applications in remote target discrimination and biological imaging.

Abstract:The correspondence ghost imaging scheme via photon counting based on micromirror device is proposed.In this scheme,a digital micromirror device is used to module the light source,the time-correlated single photon counting technology is introduced to acquire the photon counting value,and correspondence ghost imaging is used to calculate the image of target object.The principle of correspondence ghost imaging via photon counting is clarified with ghost imaging theory and correspondence ghost imaging theory,and the proposed scheme is verified by experiments.The research results show that the proposed scheme can realize weak light imaging.The images achieved by the proposed scheme are as good as those by traditional ghost imaging while the computational complexity in the process of image reconstruction is reduced.Besides,the measurement of intensity distribution by array detector is omitted in the proposed scheme and the image of target object is acquired with a single photon detector which has no spatial resolution,combined with correspondence ghost imaging algorithm.In the meantime,the proposed scheme can provide distance information of the object.

Abstract:In the extreme environment, the signal of the target object is very weak, even reaching the photon level. The single-photon detection technology can detect the weak signal effectively. Ghost imaging (GI) system with single-photon detection technology has a good application in weak light imaging, but the quality of the photon-level GI is still poor. In this paper, we develop a conditional generative adversarial network (CGAN) algorithm to restore images, and the network is trained with simulation data. The results show that the CGAN algorithm has an excellent performance, and the average PSNR and SSIM of test results increase to about 20.8 dB and 0.87 respectively, proving the proposed method is feasible. It is of great significance for imaging under low photon conditions.

Abstract:We report the first (to our knowledge) experimental demonstration of lensless ghost imaging with true thermal light. Although there is no magnification, the method is suitable for all wavelengths and so may find special applications in cases where it is not possible to use lenses, such as with x rays or gamma rays. We also numerically show that some magnification may be realized away from the focal plane, but the image will always be somewhat blurred.

Abstract:Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging enables people to see a hidden scene based on multiple interaction information between the object and the carrier. There have been numerous studies focusing on the physical modeling of photon scattering, but few have explored the detection process, which also plays a vital role. In this paper, we put forward a novel, to the best of our knowledge, detection methodology for NLOS imaging based on time-sequential first photon (TSFP) data. We verify the method with both synthetic and experimental data, showing a dramatic reduction in acquisition time cost compared with traditional methods for the same reconstruction quality. This work may contribute to real-time and photon-starved NLOS imaging for practical applications.

Abstract:High visibility temporal ghost imaging with classical light is possible when superbunching pseudothermal light is employed. In the numerical simulation, the visibility of temporal ghost imaging with pseudothermal light equaling ($4.7\pm 0.2$)\% can be increased to ($75\pm 8$)\% in the same scheme with superbunching pseudothermal light. The reasons for the difference in visibility and quality of the retrieved images in different situations are discussed in detail. It is concluded that high visibility and high quality temporal ghost image can be obtained by collecting large enough number of data points. The results are helpful to understand the difference between ghost imaging with classical light and entangled photon pairs. The superbunching pseudothermal light can be employed to improve the image quality in ghost imaging applications.

Abstract:Enhancing the reliability and reproducibility of optical microscopy by reducing specimen irradiance continues to be an important biotechnology target. As irradiance levels are reduced, however, the particle nature of light is heightened, giving rise to Poisson noise, or photon sparsity that restricts only a few (0.5%) image pixels to comprise a photon. Photon-sparsity can be addressed by collecting more than 200 photons per pixel; this, however, requires extended acquisition durations and, thus, suboptimal imaging rates. Here, we introduce near-zero photon imaging, a method that operates at kHz rates and 5,000-fold lower irradiance than modern microscopy. To achieve this performance, we deployed a judiciously designed epi-fluorescence microscope enabling ultralow back-ground and artificial intelligence that learns to reconstruct biological images from as low as 0.01 photons per pixel. We demonstrate that near-zero photon imaging captures the structure of both multicellular and subcellular targets with high fidelity, including features represented by nearly zero photons. Beyond optical microscopy, the near-zero photon imaging paradigm can be applied in remote sensing, covert applications, and biological or biomedical imaging that utilize damaging or quantum light.

Abstract:Reducing the time necessary to acquire information is highly desirable in almost every context. Ghost imaging is no exception, which is very time consuming due to its scanning nature and low light levels innate to quantum experiments. This work aimed to reduce the time required to reconstruct the image whilst maintaining quality. In doing so, we followed two complementary approaches: one varying the experimental parameters, and another implementing computational processing. We defined a performance measure based on the image reconstruction time and its resemblance to the original object, and determined that the use of image processing and recognition algorithms offers major improvements in temporal efficiency. Importantly, if the main purpose of imaging is solely object recognition, low resolution mask patterns give better results, whereas higher resolution patterns yield better resolved images, at the expense of time. We believe this work will pique interest in the ghost and single-pixel imaging communities.

Abstract:Photon bunching, a feature of classical thermal fields, has been widely exploited to implement ghost imaging. Here we show that spatial photon antibunching can be experimentally observed via low-pass filtering of the intensities of the two thermal light beams from a beamsplitter correlation system. Through suitable choice of the filter thresholds, the minimum of the measured normalized anti-correlation function, i.e., antibunching dip, can be lower than 0.2, while its full-width-at-half-maximum can be much narrower than that of the corresponding positive correlation peak. Based on this anti-correlation effect, a super-resolution negative ghost image is achieved in a lensless scheme, in which the spatial resolution can exceed the Rayleigh diffraction limit by more than a factor of two. The setup is quite simple and easy to implement, which is an advantage for practical applications.

Abstract:Abstract. Using the entangled photons generated by the spontaneous parametric down conversion as a light source, we demonstrate the first quantum ghost imaging system with a modified compressive sensing technique based on the spatial correlation of sensing matrix (SCCS). The ghost image is achieved at 16.27% sampling ratio of raster scanning and 0.65 photons/pixel at each measurement on average. Our results show that image quality and photon-utilization efficiency are remarkably enhanced in comparison with the traditional compressive imaging technique, due to the sensing matrix and noise-free measurement vector rebuilt by SCCS technique. It suggests the great potential of SCCS technique applied in quantum imaging and other quantum optics fields, such as quantum charactering and quantum state tomography to use the information loaded in each photon with high efficiency.
Photon Counting Range-Intensity Image Strategy in Low-Light Level Environments

Abstract:We present a photon counting range-intensity image strategy based on a single-photon detector in low-light level environments. In this Letter, a composite modulation method over the pulse sequence was used for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, which combined pulse-position modulation and pulse-intensity modulation. This composite modulation method could obtain range and intensity of the detected target at the same time. Besides, angle-angle information could be provided from the scanner or detector array. Thus, a range-intensity image of the target became feasible. For demonstrating this photon counting range-intensity image strategy, a proof-of-principle laboratory system was established. In low-light level environments, a range-intensity image of multiple similar targets was obtained successfully with the range accuracy of centimeter level and intensity error of 1%. Compared with the range image, a range-intensity image could better reorganize and identify similar targets.
