Abstract:High-finesse fiber Fabry-Perot resonators (FFPR) are widely used in ultrahigh-resolution sensing applications, but the multiplexing of FFPR sensors remains a challenge. This article proposes a novel frequency division multiplexing scheme for high-resolution FFPR sensor networks. An optical frequency comb is adopted as the interrogation laser. Via combining the optical frequency comb and the pound-drever-hall (PDH) technique, multitone PDH technique is firstly proposed, and it exhibits advantages of high resolution, powerful multiplexing ability, and system flexibility. It is employed for multiplexed strain sensing with two FFPR sensors. Strain resolution of 3 pε/√Hz at 1 kHz and channel crosstalk of <; -80 dB have been realized.

Abstract:Resonant fiber optic sensor (RFOS) is an important branch of fiber optic sensors due to its ultrahigh sensitivity and resolution. However, the multiplexing of RFOSs usually suffers from high system complexity and maintenance costs. In this article, we proposed an RFOS array based on frequency division multiplexing (FDM) technology. Using a broadband light source as the driving light source, the multiplexed system is characterized by low cost, simple system, ultrahigh-resolution, and no observable crosstalk between channels. In the proposed system, fiber ring resonators (FRRs) with different free spectral ranges are connected to form an array, serving as different sensing channels. The sensing mechanism of the system is based on detecting the round-trip filtering loss of the FRR sensors, and channel separation is achieved through modulating the frequency of an acousto-optic modulator (AOM). Using a 1 km delay fiber and an ultra-simple configuration, an experimental strain resolution of 361 f <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">ε</sub> /√Hz at 1 kHz is achieved without observable crosstalk between channels.

Abstract:Effective multiplexing for a very large number of fiber-optic fiber-Bragg-grating-based Fabry-Perot (FBGFP) sensors is proposed that is based on wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and spatial-frequency division multiplexing (SFDM). For WDM, FBGFP sensors are arranged in different wavelength domains formed by a series of chirped fiber Bragg gratings with different central wavelengths while the sensors with different cavity lengths within the same wavelength domain are multiplexed by use of SFDM because they have different spatial frequencies as a result of their different cavity lengths. In principle, a thousand FBGFP sensors could be multiplexed with such an approach. The experimental results show that a strain accuracy of better than +/- 10 mu epsilon has been achieved with little cross talk. (C) 2006 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:A new frequency estimation method with high-frequency resolution and low-crosstalk properties based on the eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) and singular value decomposition (SVD) of autocorrelation matrix for frequency-division-multiplexed Fabry-Perot (F-P) sensor network is proposed. Embarks from the basic principle of F-P interferometer, its feasibility on demodulating multiplexed signals is demonstrated. With a short sampling length, the shunt multiplexing signal of two sensors is demodulated and the crosstalk is analyzed in experiment. It is found that the proposed method owns a higher resolution compared with diverse Fourier transform (DFT) and Pisarenko methods. The accurate demodulation is carried out with stress error induced by crosstalk less than ±12 με when the cavity length difference is only about 20 μm. In addition, the signal processing speed is significantly increased as the number of data sequence could be reduced to 400, which makes this algorithm stronger for real-time demodulation. Therefore, such method proposed has great application potential in high-multiplexing-capability sensing networks.

Abstract:A resonant micro optic gyro (RMOG) equipped with a short and high-finesse fiber ring resonator employing the high-frequency Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) modulation is proposed and demonstrated. The modulation frequency and index of the PDH modulation are optimized to maximize the slope of demodulation curve. Based on the optimum parameters, the lock-in accuracy of the resonant frequency servo loop in the RMOG is improved to 0.178°/h, which is almost improved by two orders of magnitude compared with that obtained for the low-frequency phase modulation.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel method for multiplexing extrinsic fiber Fabry-Perot interferometric sensors (EFPIs) using the coarse wavelength-division-multiplexing technology (CWDM) is proposed and demonstrated, for the first time to our knowledge. The system and principle for sensing and multiplexing are described. A 1x4 CWDM is used to multiplex signals from four EFPIs with identical cavity length. The experimental results show that a strain accuracy of +/- 2.5 mu epsilon is achieved. There is little cross-talk between adjacent sensor channels. This system improves the multiplexing capability of EFPIs by a factor of four. It is anticipated that such a sensor system could find important applications in smart materials and health monitoring for large structures.

Abstract:A spectral demodulation algorithm based on Pisarenko sine wave recovery method for frequency-division-multiplexed (FDM) fiber-optic Fizeau strain sensor networks is proposed, which is used to effectively reduce the cross talk between two adjacent sensors, and thus enhance the network multiplexing capability. Based on principle of multi-beam interferometry, demodulation model for such networks is built up and experiments are carried out to study the cross talk of two fiber-optic Fizeau sensors. The experimental results show that a strain accuracy better than ±10 με has been achieved even when the cavity length difference is 100 μm approximately, while it is about 500 μm for fast Fourier transform. It demonstrates that the multiplexing capability of the FDM fiber-optic Fizeau sensor networks can be improved by 5 times. Hence, with a low cross talk and strong multiplexing capacity, the method can be widely used in quasi-distributed high multiplexing capability optical sensing systems.

Abstract:A multiplexed fiber grating sensor system based on injection-locking and high-order Pound–Drever–Hall techniques is presented. In the sensor system, two distributed feedback fiber lasers and a mode-locked laser are employed as the sensor array and probe laser, respectively. The weak comb teeth of the mode-locked laser are injection locked to corresponding sensing elements, to suppress the free running noise of the laser sensors and thus interrogate the sensor array. A high strain resolution of 72 p$\boldsymbol {\varepsilon }$ in 100 s and 4 p$\varepsilon$/${\surd }$ Hz above 10 Hz is proved. The proposed method allows the direct use of optical frequency comb as the light source in fiber grating sensor system. We believe this achievement is of great significance for fiber grating sensors in both sensing resolution and multiplexing scale.

Abstract:We present an ultrahigh resolution optical fiber strain sensor with a broad frequency range from quasi-static to several hundred hertz. The sensor consists of a pi-phase shifted fiber Bragg grating for strain sensing and a fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer as reference. The laser carrier and sideband are locked to the reference and sensing elements, respectively, via two individual feedback loops, in which the Pound-Drever-Hall technique is employed to generate the error signals. The sampling rate is up to 500 samples/s in the demonstrational experiments, only limited by the updating rate of the frequency counter. The strain resolution exhibits a 1/f characteristic in the bandwidth of 0.01-250 Hz, and is better than 0.01 ne at 10 Hz with a dynamic range up to 149 dB. Compared with the traditional static strain sensors, the proposed sensor shows a great improvement in both resolution and sensing bandwidth, and can be a powerful tool for geophysical applications. Coherent Pound-Drever-Hall Technique for High Resolution Fiber-Optic Strain Sensor at Very Low Light Power

Abstract:Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique has been widely adopted for ultrahigh resolution fiber-optic sensors, but its performance degenerates seriously as the light power drops. To solve this problem, we developed a coherent PDH technique for weak optical signal detection, with which the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of demodulated PDH signal is dramatically improved. In the demonstrational experiments, a high resolution fiber-optic sensor using the proposed technique is realized, and ne-order strain resolution at a low light power down to -43 dBm is achieved, which is about 15 dB lower compared with classical PDH technique. The proposed coherent PDH technique has great potentials in longer distance and larger scale sensor networks.

Abstract:Fiber Fabry-Perot (FP) sensor, as an optical sensor with simple structure and the most application fields, has attracted a lot of attention in recent decades, but it also faces the difficulty of multiplexing. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a novel multiplexing method of FP sensor with multi-branch configuration interrogated with frequency modulated continuous wave interferometry. By an algorithm based on Fourier transform, the sub-sensors are addressable and their interference spectrum can be demodulated independently. For demonstration, the quasi-distributed refractive index (RI) sensing experiment is realized. The experiment results inherit high RI sensitivity of the traditional FP sensor around 1200 nm/RIU and high RI resolution smaller than 5 x 10(-6) RIU. Besides, thanks to the advantage of coherence detection, the spectrum can be demodulated from the reflection signal of <2 pW, which provides the possibility for a huge multiplexing amount, about 8000 in theory. The proposed multiplexing method is significant for practical applications of the traditional FP sensor.

Abstract:In this Letter, we propose a quadrature phase-stabilized three-wavelength demodulation technique for the interrogation of fiber-optic Fabry-Perot acoustic sensors. It is based on accurate and fast tuning of a monolithic modulated grating Y-branch laser. Three quadrature wavelengths are chosen to perform high-speed cavity length demodulation by wavelength switching, thereby avoiding imbalances and disturbances between the three optical paths in conventional three-wavelength quadrature phase-demodulation systems. A feedback-stabilization scheme for maintaining the quadrature phase condition is proposed for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, providing potential for long-term monitoring in harsh environments.

Abstract:A dual Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometric fiber-optic acoustic sensor based on sandwich-structure composite diaphragm is proposed, where fixed phase difference is generated by two FP interferometers (FPIs) with different cavity length. An ellipse fitting differential cross multiplication (EF-DCM) interrogation process is applied for phase demodulation to overcome drawbacks of quadrature point based intensity demodulation, such as temperature drifting, optical power jitter and limited dynamic range. Besides, benefiting from the large area sandwich-structure composite diaphragm, high sensitivity and wide flat frequency response are obtained. Experimental results show that phase sensitivity is −121.11 dB re 1 rad/μPa@250 Hz and sensitivity fluctuation is below 0.8 dB between 2-250Hz. To prove the high stability of the demodulation system, acoustic signal test is performed at different wavelength and different optical power and a fluctuation below 3% is observed. Moreover, profiting from the dual FP sensor structure, the acoustic sensor is get rid of influence of temperature drifting which usually leads to variation of cavity length of fiber optic acoustic sensor. The proposed sensor structure also overcomes drawbacks of traditional dual wavelength demodulation such as extra noise introduced by erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and high cost.

Abstract:The Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique is a powerful method for laser frequency stabilization, and a PDH loop can also act as a single-channel sensor with high resolution and fast response speed. In this work, we expand the PDH technique into a time-domain distributed form, accomplishing a fast Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) scheme which measures the distribution of Brillouin frequency shifts along optical fiber without frequency scanning. Approaches of phase modulated probe light, synchronous demodulation for PDH error, arbitrarily accessing in single interrogation, and distributed form feedback control are employed in the system. The scheme achieves fast measurement speed and large dynamic range at the same time, as well as good response linearity and high tolerance to optical power fluctuation. In the demonstration experiment, sensing resolution of 0.4 MHz and measurement range of 300 MHz are realized, under the condition of 25 km single mode communication fiber, 5 m spatial resolution and 0.24 s measurement time (400 times of averaging).

Abstract:The interrogation technology plays a key role in high resolution fiber grating sensors. Due to the high sensitivity and quick response, the Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique is one of the most successful interrogation methods in the high resolution fiber grating sensor systems. However, the traditional PDH technique can only interrogate one sensing element with limited measurement range, and can't fully exploit the capability of optical fiber sensors. To break through this limitation, lots of efforts have been put to improve the PDH technique. This article reviews the recent improvements on PDH technique towards large measurement range and low probe power interrogation. Sideband interrogation method and high order PDH technique are proposed to expand the measurement range without tuning the laser frequency; In order to enable low probe power interrogation, which is essential in multiplexed sensing, coherent PDH and active PDH techniques are developed. Those improvements will promote the further development of PDH technique and provide powerful tools for high-resolution sensing applications.

Abstract:A novel method for multiplexing fiber-optic Fizeau strain sensors with optical amplification is proposed and demonstrated. This method overcomes the two intrinsic disadvantages of fiber-optic Fabry-Perot (F-P) strain sensors, i.e. weak signal and difficult multiplexing. The amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and optical amplification of an Erbium-doped fiber (EDF) pumped by a 980nm laser diode are used simultaneously to enhance the interferometric signal considerably. A Fizeau interferometer formed by two fiber ends with a quite different reflectivity is used to replace the F-P cavity in sensor head design. Such a Fizeau cavity can enlarge the cavity length by at least an order of magnitude and allows more than ten sensors to be multiplexed simultaneously by using spatial-frequency multiplexing. The operating principle of the sensor system is discussed and an experiment is carried out to verify the concept of the method proposed. It is anticipated that such a sensor system could find important applications for health monitoring of large structures.

Abstract:Ultrahigh-resolution fiber-optic sensing has been demonstrated with a meter-long, high-finesse fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (FFPI). The main technical challenge of large, environment-induced resonance frequency drift is addressed by locking the interrogation laser to a similar meter-long FFPI, which, along with the FFPI sensor, is thermally and mechanically isolated from the ambient. A nominal, noise-limited strain resolution of 800 f{\epsilon} /sqrt(Hz) has been achieved within 1 to 100 Hz. Strain resolution further improves to 75 f{\epsilon} /sqrt(Hz) at 1 kHz, 60 f{\epsilon} /sqrt(Hz) at 2 kHz and 40 f{\epsilon} /sqrt(Hz) at 23 kHz, demonstrating comparable or even better resolutions than proven techniques such as {\pi}-phase-shifted and slow-light fiber Bragg gratings. Limitations of the current system are analyzed and improvement strategies are presented. The work lays out a feasible path toward ultrahigh-resolution fiber-optic sensing based on long FFPIs.
