Abstract:A high-performance digital signal processor using an FPGA circuit for a closed- loop resonant fiber-optic gyro is constructed. Experiments show that the equivalent lock-in accuracy is better than 0.01°/h at the integration time of 100s.

Abstract:A fiber-optic gyroscope (FOG) has already been selected to fulfill the inertial navigation system(INS) function of the new airspace. We have completed the development of intermediate grade closed-loop mode FOG(0.2 to 0.4 degree/h, 1 sigma, 500ppm, 1 sigma )satisfying environment requirement with 500 meter mono-mode fiber, which is controlled exclusively by a high-speed Digital Signal Processor(DSP). The control and compensation algorithms are implemented in software and carried out by a single high speed DSP. The processor also takes care of the communication protocol via a parallel bus.

Abstract:Resonator fiber optic gyro(RFOG)is a late-model optical sensor to measure rotation velocity,of which resonant frequency is changed through the Sagnac effect.Compared with the traditional analogue circuit,the detection system based on a digital circuit has advantages of high stability,strong anti-interference ability and swift signal processing,small size and easy integration.A digital RFOG based on FPGA is set up.The resonant frequency servo loop based on the proportion integration controller and the automatic compensation circuits for voltage drift of the phase modulator,as well as the second closed-loop are all realized with a single FPGA.Applying the digital detection circuit with the closed-loop operation to the RFOG system,the functions of the FPGA are verified experimentally.On this basis,the gyro rotation signal is observed successfully.

Abstract:Resonator fiber optic gyroscope has the potential to achieve the inertial navigation system requirement with a short sensing coil. An all digitalized system is constructed including the signal modulation/demodulation and a proportional integral (PI) controller in a single field programmable gate array. Under this scheme, the serrodyne phase modulation technique is adopted, which is of benefit to overcome the backscattering induced noise and easy to implement in closed-loop operation. The phase modulation index is optimized to achieve high carrier suppression. The PI controller is adopted in the frequency servo loop to eliminate the residual error at the lock-in frequency. A bias stability of 5.2×10-4 rad/s in 500 seconds is demonstrated experimentally.

Abstract:A low-noise low-delay digital signal processor is constructed on a single field-programmable gate array. An equivalent input noise as low as 3.752 nV/√Hz is demonstrated for the digital signal processor, which can detect an equivalent Sagnac effect of 0.003°/s in a resonant micro optic gyro (RMOG) with a 2.5-cm diameter ring resonator. With the processing time reduced from hundreds of seconds to 1.1 μs , this processor significantly increases the loop gain of the feedback loop and reduces the reciprocal noise in the RMOG. Owing to the fast speed of this processor, the lock-in frequency accuracy is reduced to 0.78 Hz (1σ), which is equivalent to a rotation rate of 0.004°/s. Relationship between this digitalized RMOG output signal and angular rate is obtained from ±0.25°/s to ±400°/s. The standard deviation of the residuals between RMOG output results and linear fit curve is 0.0236°/s.

Abstract:Fiber Optic Gyro (FOG) is a new kind of inertial sensor. It has many theoretic advantages over traditional gyros and other optic gyros. This paper presents an all-digital close-loop operation based on DSP circuits, which uses the two-frequency serrodyne modulation to modulate and demodulate the optic route. Considering the white noise mixed in optical signal and the quantization noise from limited bits of A/D, we propose to over-sample the raw signal with the rate of sample which is much higher than its bandwidth. Combined with digital signal processing followed, the detection using A/D with lower bits has nearly the same results as that using A/D with higher bits. The resolution of digital modulation limits the precision of the whole system. Using the average method applied to the D/A,a large dynamic range of modulation can be obtained with lower bits. By the experiment based on the designed digital system, a demodulation curve resembling theoretic simulation is obtained, and the feasibility of this scheme of digital close-loop is proved.

Abstract:A resonator micro optic gyro (RMOG) with the proposed FPGA-based digital processor is set up. The double phase modulation technique is applied to achieve high total carrier suppression. Rotation tests from +/- 0.1 degrees/s to +/- 5 degrees/s are tested, where the processing circuit of RMOG is implemented by the instruments. The rotation test over a range of +/- 550 degrees/s has been successfully obtained with all the processing circuit implemented in FPGA. To the best of our knowledge, these results are the best results of RMOG ever demonstrated in silica resonator with the ring length as short as 7.9 cm.

Abstract:The resonant fiber-optic gyroscope (RFOG) based on the Sagnac effect is a high-accuracy rotation sensor. The intermodulation error due to the laser noise at even harmonics of the modulation frequency deteriorates the performance of the RFOG. Aiming at the suppression of high-frequency laser noise, a phase-modulated feedback loop is developed and analyzed. The parameters of the servo loop is optimized to enhance the performance of the gyroscope.

Abstract:Resonator fiber optic gyro (R-FOG) is a novel optical rotation sensor whose resonant frequency is changed due to the Sagnac effect. The required bits of analog-to-digital (A/D) converter and digital-to-analog (D/A) converter are researched. During A/D process, combining the over-sampling method with the low pass filtering technique, the resolution of A/D is extended. During D/A process, using PWM, the resolution of D/A can also be improved. These above methods have been adopted in the practical R-FOG digital system. Based on 12 bit A/D and 14 bit D/A, the digital detection system is set up, and then the modulated curve similar to the theoretical curve is obtained. The gyro rotation signal is also observed successfully.

Abstract:A double closed-loop resonator fiber optic gyro (RFOG) with an improved digital serrodyne scheme is experimentally demonstrated. To overcome the effect of the imperfect serrodyne modulation, an improved frequency shifting module is designed and constructed on a single FPGA. The frequency resolution is improved to 0.01Hz, which is equivalent to a rotation rate of 0.04 degrees/h. A bias stability of 2 degrees/h is achieved in a double closed-loop RFOG with a 14.25-m long fiber ring resonator. This is the best result reported to date, to the best of our knowledge, for closed-loop RFOGs. Moreover, good linearity and large dynamic range are also experimentally demonstrated thanks to the closed-loop operation.

Abstract:A digital detection technique based on the coordinate rotation digital computer (CORDIC) algorithm is proposed for a resonator fiber optic gyroscope (R-FOG). It makes the generation of modulation signal, synchronous demodulation and signal processing in R-FOG to be realized in a single field programmable gate array (FPGA). The frequency synthesis and synchronous detection techniques based on the CORDIC algorithm have been analyzed and designed firstly. The experimental results indicate that the precision of the detection circuit satisfies the requirements for the closed-loop feedback in R-FOG system. The frequency of the laser is locked to the resonance frequency of the fiber ring resonator stably and the open-loop gyro output signal is observed successfully. The dynamic range and the bias drift of the R-FOG are ±1.91 rad/s and 0.005 rad/s over 10 s, respectively.

Abstract:A resonator fiber optic gyro (RFOG) based on a fiber-coupled semiconductor DFB-LD with an FPGA-based digital processor is set up. A bias stability of 23deg/h over one hour is successfully demonstrated. This is the best result in long time stability reported to date, to the best of our knowledge, for the RFOG based on a miniaturized laser source.

Abstract:The miniaturization of the gyroscope is critical for spacecrafts, drones, wellbore surveys, etc. The resonant fiber-optic gyroscope (RFOG) is a competitive candidate due to its potential in both miniaturization and high resolution, while its actual performance is well below expectation because of laser-induced noise and complexity. Here we report the first navigation grade RFOG with a bias instability of 0.009°/h and an angle random walk of 0.0093°/ h . The results are realized using a fiber resonator with finesse of 63 containing 100-m long fiber. Compared with the traditional RFOGs using narrow-linewidth lasers, the key feature of the proposed RFOG is that it is driven with a broadband light source. A white-light multibeam interference method is proposed to detect the Sagnac effect, representing the simplest scheme of RFOG to date. The complexity caused by multiple feedback loops and coherent noise suppression in traditional RFOG scheme is avoided. The minimal scheme and simple modulation algorithm will also promote the on-chip waveguide gyroscope.

Abstract:The detection theory of resonator fiber optic gyro(R-FOG) based on the serrodyne modulation with two frequencies was introduced,and the correlative detection theory in digital system was analyzed.According to the characteristics of the detection signal in the gyro system,and using the synchronous square wave produced in the field programmable gate array(FPGA),a digital lock-in amplifier used in R-FOG was designed and its signal noise ratio(SNR) was analyzed.Applying the lock-in amplifier to the gyro system,the resonance frequency was locked quickly and stably.Experimental results indicated that the lock-in amplifier satisfied the precision needed in the closed-loop feedback and the locking time was 1.1 ms.

Abstract:New developments are made in the resonant fiber optic gyro (RFOG), which is an optical sensor for the measurement of rotation rate. The digital signal processing system based on the phase modulation technique is capable of detecting the weak frequency difference induced by the Sagnac effect and suppressing the reciprocal noise in the circuit, which determines the detection sensitivity of the RFOG. A new technique based on the sinusoidal wave modulation and square wave demodulation is implemented, and the demodulation curve of the system is simulated and measured. Compared with the past technique using sinusoidal modulation and demodulation, it increases the slope of the demodulation curve by a factor of 1.56, improves the spectrum efficiency of the modulated signal, and reduces the occupancy of the field-programmable gate array resource. On the basis of this new phase modulation technique, the loop is successfully locked and achieves a short-term bias stability of 1.08°/h, which is improved by a factor of 1.47.

Abstract:A closed-loop digital detection system in resonant fiber gyro by two frequencies modulation based on DSP chip is proposed. In this system, the sinusoidal signal of its fundamental frequency is extracted from the output light intensity signal of the detector by use of band-pass filter. The noise is eliminated by using correlative detection principle. The DC component, proportional to the light intensity of detector output, is extracted by low-pass filter and converted into corresponding resonant frequency difference, and then the angle rotating speed of the gyroscope can be calculated based on such frequency difference. The detection circuit of this system is simple and the operation is convenient. The processing speed of this system has been greatly improved due to application of. DSP chip. Moreover, the optimization design for the filter parameters of the detection system is realized by Matlab software, thus improving the detection accuracy of the system.
