Abstract:Recently, a variety of reversible chemical bonds are incorporated into thermoset polymers to design stimuli-responsive materials. Light-triggered dynamic network is advantageous since it is simple, inexpensive and easy controlled. In this paper, the dynamic photo-responsive network structure with labile bonds and free ethylene dimethacrylate (EGDMA) molecules was constructed. Under the stimulus of UV light, the labile bonds homolytically cleaved and the network was separated into small sections. Then the EGDMA monomers linked these small sections together to form a new network with higher crosslink density. Such depolymerization and polymerization processes would result in the self-healing of materials. Therefore, molecular dynamics method was applied to simulate the interface self-healing process of this polyurethane material under light stimulation condition. The mechanical properties of the healed networks under uniaxial tension were examined. The results showed that self-healing occurs at the interface of materials due to the polymerization, and the mechanical properties of the healed materials are strengthened when compared to that of the fresh samples. Moreover, the effect of crosslinking agent on the self-healing was investigated. The best mechanical properties of healed sample are obtained when the crosslinking agent reacts exactly with the polyurethane network.

Abstract:The research on self-healing polymers has been a hot topic. The encapsulated-monomer/catalyst, supramolecular self-assembly and reversible or dynamic covalent bond formation are the prevailingly adopted strategies. The alternative of irreversible covalent bond formation is, however, to be further developed. In this contribution, self-healing hyperbranched poly(aroyltriazole)s of PI and PII sharing such mechanism were developed. The polymers were synthesized by our developed metal-free click polymerizations of bis(aroylacetylene)s and triazide. They are processible and have excellent film-forming ability. High quality homogeneous films and sticks free from defects could be obtained by casting. The scratched films could be self-repaired upon general heating. The cut films and sticks could be healed by stacking or pressing the halves together at elevated temperature. Thus, these hyperbranched polymers could find broad applications in diverse areas and our design concept for self-healing materials should be generally applicable to other hyperbranched polymers with reactive groups on their peripheries.

Abstract:<p>A major challenge in designing self-healing polymeric materials is to combine robust mechanical properties and high healing efficiency. Herein, we report a kind of transparent, hydrogen-bonded polymer complex elastomers with both good mechanical strength and rapid self-healing capability under ambient conditions. Such elastomers were simply fabricated by in situ photoinitiated random copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and N-acryloyl-6-aminocaproic acid (A6ACA), in the presence of a linear polyethylene oxide (PEO). By evaporating water molecules from the samples via free drying, the dynamical hydrogen bonding between PEO and poly(A6ACA-co-AA) were substantially formed, which endowed the polymer chains to form physically crosslinked three-dimensional polymer network, as well as the topological chain entanglements. The resulting optically transparent elastomers exhibited both good mechanical strengths (at break) as high as 1.73 MPa, and excellent stretchability that could be stretched up to 24 times their initial length, respectively. Comparing with the elastomers based on PAA homopolymer without the A6ACA comonomer and PEO, the introduction of A6ACA as a comonomer afforded complex elastomers with comparable mechanical strength and, more importantly, significantly improved self-healing efficiency even under ambient conditions, probably due to the largely decreased glass transition temperature that facilitated chain mobility and reformation of hydrogen bonds. It is therefore believed that the copolymerization strategy offers a practical method to tune the compositions and to tailor the properties of hydrogen-bonded polymer complexes for engineering elastomers with balanced mechanical and self-healing performance under ambient environment for various applications.</p>

A Transparent, Highly Stretchable, Autonomous Self-Healing Poly(dimethyl siloxane) Elastomer

Abstract:An innovative self-healing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer, namely, PDMS-TFB, is reported by incorporating the reversibly dynamic imine bond as the self-healing points into the PDMS networks. The PDMS-TFB elastomer features good optical transmittance (80%) in full visible light region, high stretchability (≈700%), and excellent autonomous self-healing ability at room temperature. Surprisingly, the self-healing behavior can take place in water and even at a temperature as low as -20 °C in air, showing a promising outlook for broader applications. As a proof-of-concept, this study demonstrates the use of the PDMS-TFB elastomer for preparing anticorrosion coating and adhesive layer, and also the use of such an elastomer to be the platform for fabricating the flexible interconnector and chemical sensor. Remarkably, no significant difference is observed between the pristine and healed samples. Taking full advantage of these unique properties, it is anticipated that such a PDMS-TFB elastomer shows wide applications in the fields of materials science, electronics, biology, optics, etc.

Abstract:Designing versatile functional medical adhesives with injectability, self-healing, and strong adhesion is of great significance to achieve desirable therapeutic effects for promoting wound sealing in healthcare. Herein, a self-healing injectable adhesive is fabricated by physical interaction of polyphenol compound tannic acid (TA) and eight-arm poly(ethylene glycol) end-capped with succinimide glutarate active ester (PEG-SG). The hydrogen bonding induced from the structural unit (-CH2-CH2-O-) of PEG and catechol hydroxyl (-OH) of TA, accompanied by ester exchange between N-hydroxysuccinimide (-NHS) and amino (-NH2) of proteins, contributes to self-healing ability and rapid strong adhesion. Notably, the PEG/TA adhesive can repeatedly adhere to rigid porcine tissues, close the coronary artery under a large incision tension, and bear a heavy load of 2 kg. By exhibiting shear-thinning and anti-swelling properties, the PEG/TA adhesive can be easily applied through single-syringe extrusion onto various wounds. The single-channel toothpaste-like feature of the adhesive ensures its storage hermetically for portable usage. Moreover, in vivo operation and histological H&E staining results indicate that the PEG/TA adhesive greatly accelerates wound healing and tissue regeneration in a rat model. With the specialty of injectability, instant self-healing, and long-lasting strong adhesion to facilitate excellent therapeutic effects, the multifunctional PEG/TA adhesive may provide a new alternative for self-rescue and surgical situations.

Abstract:Thermoset epoxy resin-based materials are widely used, but their permanent cross-linked network limits their processability and reusability, which can lead to environmental burdens. In this work, by exploiting the weak reactivity of aniline to design appropriate reaction ratios, we achieved a linear link between the epoxy resin and the curing agent. This linear link, along with the crosslinking points provided by the flexibly branched polyurethanes, avoids the inherent brittleness associated with the highly crosslinked network of conventional epoxy resins. As a result, the adhesive exhibits extraordinary improvements in extensibility and toughness. The lap shear strength, tensile strength and elongation at break reach 11.9 MPa, 14.4 MPa and 607 %, respectively. The fracture toughness is as high as 109.6 kJ/m2, far beyond the existing epoxy adhesives. The synergistic effect of disulfide bonds and hydrogen bonds confers the adhesive with self-healing and repeatable bonding characteristics. The multi-level hydrogen bonding and appropriate phase separation structure are key to optimizing toughness, resulting in excellent comprehensive performance. The introduction of polyurethane not only improves toughness but also enhances the interfacial bonding force between the adhesive and the substrate, broadening the scope of applications. The prepared high-performance polymers provide new insights into reusable epoxy adhesives.

Abstract:Exploring novel healing mechanisms is a constant impetus for the development of self-healing materials. Herein, we find that side-chain interlocking of bottlebrush polymers can form a dynamic network and thereby serve as a driving force for the self-healing process of the materials. Molecular dynamics simulation indicates that the interlocking is formed by the interpenetration between the long side chains of adjacent molecules and stabilized by van der Waals interactions and molecular entanglements of side chains. The interlocking can be tailored by changing the length and density of the side chains through atom transfer radical polymerization. As a result, the optimized bottlebrush polymer shows a healing efficiency of up to 100%. Unlike chemical interactions, side-chain interlocking eliminates the introduction of specific chemical groups. Therefore, bottlebrush polymers can even self-heal under harsh aqueous conditions, including acid and alkali solutions. Moreover, the highly dynamic side-chain interlocking enables bottlebrush polymers to efficiently dissipate vibration energy, and thus they can be used as damping materials. Collectively, side-chain interlocking expands the scope of physical interactions in self-healing materials and hews out a versatile way for polymers to accomplish self-healing capability in various environments.

Abstract:Polymer materials that are able to self-heal in humid conditions or even in water are highly desirable for their industrial applications. However, the development of underwater self-healing polymer materials is very challenging since water molecules can readily disturb traditional noncovalent bonds, such as saturate the hydrogen bonds, coordinate with the metal cation, as well as solvate the ions. Here, a new type of dipole-dipole interactions is employed as the driving force, combining with highly polar and hydrophobic fluorinated polymers, to successfully demonstrate an underwater self-healing elastomer. The polymer materials are transparent and stretchable. They can remain stable underwater for months without significant decay of mechanical properties. Upon mechanical damage, the material is able to self-heal automatically in air, underwater, and under very harsh aqueous conditions (including seawater, highly acidic media, and highly basic media, etc.).

Abstract:Modern adhesives usually need to have integrated functions to meet the growing application needs, such as stimulus responsiveness, reversible adhesion ability, self-healing function, and adhesion ability under humid environments. Compared with traditional polymer adhesive materials, supramolecular adhesive materials made by self-assembly of small molecular monomers are rarely explored. Here, inspired by the conversion of thioctic acid (TA) from small molecular biological sources into high-performance supramolecular polymeric materials, catechol groups were grafted on thioctic acid and polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) was introduced. TADP30 supramolecular adhesive material was successfully constructed. TADP30 achieves fast waterproof adhesion to a variety of substrates and is reusable. The self-healing ability comes from the dynamic disulfide bond between TADP30 molecules, which has high-efficiency self-healing ability (more than 80% tensile recovery within 1 hour). The benign structural unit of TADP30 makes it have low toxicity. In addition, a large number of catechol groups on the TADP chain endowed the adhesive with tissue adhesion properties and cell affinity. We expanded its biomedical applications by performing wound healing experiments with mouse liver injury models. The wound healing experiments proved that TADP30 has healing function and good in vivo compatibility. Compared with the control group, the total blood loss of the TADP30 adhesive group in the mouse liver injury model was reduced by nearly 70%. From multifunctional bonding to tissue healing and wound hemostasis, the polymer is expected to become a new type of adhesive material.

Abstract:There is a trade-off between mechanical and self-healing performance for cross-linked self-healing materials. Herein, we design a polyurethane material containing triple synergy dynamic bonds to address the dilemma. The as-prepared polyurethane exhibits a maximum stress of 27.3 MPa and excellent self-healing performance. Specifically, boric acid is used as a cross-linker and the network cross-linked with boronic ester bonds under alkaline conditions is highly beneficial in terms of mechanical properties. Meanwhile, disulfide bonds and reversible boronic ester bonds located at the cross-linked point and main chain are successively broken upon being damaged, which is conducive to better fluidity of chains and endows the material with superior healing efficiency and multiple cycles of healing. Consequently, the high-performance self-healing material is of great potential in the fields of high-performance coating, aerospace, and load-bearing rubber.

Abstract:Herein, a self-healing polyacrylate system was successfully prepared by introducing crosslinking agents containing disulfide bonds and monomers capable of forming quadruple hydrogen bonds through free radical copolymerization. This polymer material exhibited good toughness and self-healing properties through chemical and physical dual dynamic networks while maintaining excellent mechanical properties, which expanded the development path of self-healing acrylate materials. Compared to uncrosslinked and single dynamically crosslinked polymers, its elongation at break was as high as 437%, and its tensile strength was 5.48 MPa. Due to the presence of dual reversible dynamic bonds in the copolymer system, good self-healing was also achieved at 60 °C. In addition, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis measurements confirmed that the thermal stability and glass transition temperature of the material were improved owing to the presence of physical and chemical cross-linking networks.

Abstract:Poly(1,2,3-triazolium) (PTAM) is a kind of self-healing adhesive based on dynamic reversible covalent 1,2,3-triazolium, which is formed through the reaction of halogenated hydrocarbon and 1,2,3-triazole and plays an important role in the properties of PTAM. Therefore, it is valuable to understand the effect of halogenated hydrocarbon crosslinkers on the properties of PTAM. A series of PTAM adhesive with different crosslinkers have been prepared. The reactivity between halogenated hydrocarbon and 1,2,3-triazole was different. Crosslinkers with longer chain, iodine substituted and aromatic structure improved the adhesive property of PTAM adhesive joints, which was up to 17 MPa. The first self-healing efficiency of PTAM adhesive joints with aliphatic bromine crosslinkers reached more than 100% and the maximum cycle times of them was more than 9 before failure. The self-healing properties of PTAMs depend on the segment motion and anti-thermal oxygen aging of PTAMs. These results provide some insights for the structural design of self-healing adhesive and dynamic covalent materials.

Abstract:Polymer hydrogel is a soft material with a three-dimensional network structure that can absorb and retain a large amount of water. Polymer hydrogels have good biocompatibility, mechanical properties and important application value in biomedical and bioengineering fields. Self-healing hydrogels are smart hydrogels that respond to external stimuli and repair their own damage. Compared with the traditional hydrogel, the self-healing hydrogel has the property of repairing damage, and received extensive attention in the scientific field in recent years. Dynamic chemistry-based self-healing hydrogels are novel self-healing hydrogels that can reshape three-dimensional network structures by dynamic covalent or non-covalent bonding to repair damage. The new selfhealing hydrogel can quickly repair its own damage and has good environmental adaptability, laying the foundation for the development of self-healing hydrogels as multifunctional new materials. The research progress of recent self-healing hydrogels based on dynamic chemistry was reviewed in this paper, especially focusing on the updated development on self-healing hydrogels based on hydrogen bonds, metal coordination interactions, host-guest interactions, ionic bonds, hydrophobic interactions, imine bonds/acylhydrazone bonds, borate bonds and disulphide bonds, and meanwhile, the problem of self-healing hydrogels was put forward, and the future direction of development was finally predicted.

Abstract:A new self-healing polymer has been obtained by incorporating a cyclometalated platinum(II) complex Pt(C∧ N∧ N)Cl (C∧ N∧ N = 6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridyl) into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) backbone. The molecular interactions (a combination of Pt···Pt and π-π interactions) between cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes are strong enough to crosslink the linear PDMS polymer chains into an elastic film. The as prepared polymer can be stretched to over 20 times of its original length. When damaged, the polymer can be healed at room temperature without any healants or external stimuli. Moreover, the self-healing is insensitive to surface aging. This work represents the first example where the attractive metallophilic inter-actions are utilized to design self-healing materials. Moreover, our results suggest that the stretchability and self-healing properties can be obtained simultaneously without any conflict by optimizing the strength of crosslinking interactions.

Abstract:Herein, a self-healing hybrid polyurethane acrylate was prepared by solution polymerization of acrylic monomers (2-hydroxypropylmethacrylate/butyl acrylate mixture) in the presence of performed polyurethane chains containing aliphatic disulfide bonds with terminal isocyanate groups. A good balance between mechanical performance and self-healing capacities was also obtained by precise regulation of the content of disulfide bonds in company with the number of hard segments. The tensile strength of impaired sample was recovered to 94.44% of the original value (22.68 MPa) at under mild condition (95 °C for 24 h). Our prepared samples exhibited an outstanding Young's modulus of 168 MPa compared to the reported self-repaired polyurethanes, in combination with a good toughness. The dynamic evolution of the polymer structure with temperature due to the thermal response of the disulfide bond and the hydrogen bond was also studied by rheological experiments and stress relaxation tests. This self-healable material exhibited a great potential in the industrial field thanks to its excellent mechanical properties and simple preparation process.

Abstract:Self-healing polymers with microphase-separated structure are plagued with inferior self-healing efficiency at room temperature due to a lack of dynamic interactions in hard domains. Herein, we describe a novel strategy of multiphase active hydrogen bonds (H-bonds), toward realizing fast and efficient self-healing at room temperature, even under harsh conditions. The core conception is to incorporate thiourea moieties into microphase-separated polyurea network to form multistrength H-bonds, which destroy the crystallization of hard domains and, at the same time, insert the dynamic reversible H-bonds in both hard and soft segments, accounting for the surprisingly self-healing performances. The synthesized polymeric material, poly(dimethylsiloxane)-4,4'-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate)-1,1'-thiocarbonyldiimidazole, completely recovers all of the mechanical properties within 4 h at room temperature after rupture. Significantly, self-healing process can also take place at low temperature (restoration with an 85% efficiency in 48 h at -20 degrees C) or in the water (restoration with a 95% efficiency in 4 h). Depending on the cleavage/reformation of multiphase H-bonds, the material exhibits unprecedented ultrastrechability and notch-insensitiveness. It can be stretched up to 31 500% without fracture and reach a notch-insensitive stretching of up to 18 000%. These exceptional characteristics inspired us to fabricate highly stretchable self-healable underwater conductor and protective self-healing film for suppressing shuttling of polysulfides and preventing crack propagation in S cathode, which provide the pathway for applications in underwater electronic devices or advanced Li-S batteries.

Abstract:In recent years, polymers capable of repeatedly self-healing physical damage and restoring mechanical properties have attracted extensive attention. Among the various supramolecular chemistry, hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) featuring with reversibility, directionality and high per-volume concentration has become one of the most attractive directions for the developing of self-healing polymers (SHPs). Herein, recent advances in the design of high-performance SHPs based on different H-bonding types, for example, H-bonding motifs and excessive H-bonding, are reviewed. In particular, the effects of structural designs of SHPs on their mechanical performance and healing efficiency are discussed in detail. Moreover, we have also summarized how to make use of these H-bonding-based SHPs for the preparation of self-healable electronic devices-with the focus on promising topics, including energy harvesting devices, energy storage devices, as well as flexible sensing devices. Finally, the current challenges and possible strategies of developing H-bonding-based SHPs and their smart electronic applications are pointed out.
