Abstract:Recently, a variety of reversible chemical bonds are incorporated into thermoset polymers to design stimuli-responsive materials. Light-triggered dynamic network is advantageous since it is simple, inexpensive and easy controlled. In this paper, the dynamic photo-responsive network structure with labile bonds and free ethylene dimethacrylate (EGDMA) molecules was constructed. Under the stimulus of UV light, the labile bonds homolytically cleaved and the network was separated into small sections. Then the EGDMA monomers linked these small sections together to form a new network with higher crosslink density. Such depolymerization and polymerization processes would result in the self-healing of materials. Therefore, molecular dynamics method was applied to simulate the interface self-healing process of this polyurethane material under light stimulation condition. The mechanical properties of the healed networks under uniaxial tension were examined. The results showed that self-healing occurs at the interface of materials due to the polymerization, and the mechanical properties of the healed materials are strengthened when compared to that of the fresh samples. Moreover, the effect of crosslinking agent on the self-healing was investigated. The best mechanical properties of healed sample are obtained when the crosslinking agent reacts exactly with the polyurethane network.

Abstract:The self-healing polymers based on dynamic covalent bonds or non-covalent interactions have been widely reported in experiments. However, the self-healing theory and mechanism still need to be explored further. In this paper, molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the self-healing mechanism based on disulfide bond exchange reactions at the atomic scale. The microstructures of sample during self-healing process are tracked, and the mechanical properties varying with healing time are examined by uniaxial tension tests. In addition, the effect of crosslink density on the self-healing efficiency and mechanical properties is investigated. The results reveal that the high crosslink density has a positive effect on the mechanical properties and a negative effect on the mobility of molecular chains. The effect of healing time on healing efficiency is also studied, which exhibits the same tendency as the experimental results. Finally, the stress relaxation test is simulated to study the dynamic feature of exchangeable disulfide bonds. The results indicate that the system with shorter stress relaxation time has higher healing efficiency.
High-Performance Epoxy Vitrimers with the Joint Action of Dual Dynamic Covalent Bonds

Abstract:Epoxy vitrimers have attracted increasing research attention owing to their stable physical properties, reprocessability, recyclability, and degradability. Among them, rapid self-healing can be achieved in dual dynamic covalent epoxy vitrimers. However, research on the performance and high-strength surface welding of dual dynamic covalent epoxy vitrimers with flexibility is still insufficient. Herein, we report a dual dynamic covalent epoxy vitrimer cocross-linked by dimer acid (DAA) and 3,3 '-dithiodipropionic acid (DTDA), named E51-DAAx-DTDAy. The results suggest that the stress relaxation and self-healing speed of vitrimers is improved and the mechanical properties can be restored by 81.2% after 24 h of healing. Additionally, significant recyclability is found in E51-DAAx-DTDAy, with a maximum recovery rate of 119.4% in tensile strength and 124.8% in elongation at break after three times of recycling. Furthermore, T-v of E51-DAAx-DTDAy was above 140 degrees C; meanwhile, E51-DAAx-DTDAy had better insulation properties, making them more suitable for use as thermosetting materials at moderate temperatures in electronic equipment. E51-DAAx-DTDAy can be recycled by chemical reagents, and green cycling can be achieved. These are attributed to the contributions of disulfide bonds and hydroxyl ester bonds in the network topology.

Abstract:Conventional epoxy vitrimer containing single type of dynamic covalent bonds constitutes a class of polymer materials that integrates the advantages of thermoplastics and thermosets. However, the response of single type of dynamic covalent bond is slow, so it is very meaningful to combine multiple dynamic covalent bonds with adjustable proportions into one network for endowing vitrimers with diversified properties, especially rapid self-healing performances. Based on this consideration, we designed a series of epoxy vitrimers containing β-hydroxyl esters and disulfide bonds with adjusting any proportions. To this end, carboxylic acid-extended epoxy resins containing dynamical β-hydroxyl esters were first prepared through chemical reactions between conventional epoxy resin and suberic acid (SA), and then cured by aromatic disulfides (SS) to form vitrimers containing β-hydroxyl esters and disulfide bonds. Here, the SA part offers soft segments and dynamic β-hydroxyl esters, the curing agent SS part supplies hard segments and dynamic disulfide bonds. The properties of vitrimers with dual dynamic bonds are easily tailored by changing the ratio of SA and SS. Vitrimers with dual dynamic bonds exhibit excellent rapid self-healing properties closing to 80% after healing only 10 min, and the theoretical healing efficiencies are in good agreement with the actual values.

Abstract:Novel reprocessable thermosetting adhesives (RTAs), which combine high adhesive strength, reusability, disassembly, and recyclability features, have attracted increasing attention. However, developing RTAs with a rapidly adhesive rate while ensuring high adhesive strength and self-healing ability is still a significant challenge. Here, we prepared a novel vitrimer called DAx-DTSAy, which can be used as an RTA. First, by adjusting the ratio of rigid and flexible segments, maximum tensile strength reached 35.92 MPa. Second, the combined effect of dynamic hydroxyl ester bonds and dynamic disulfide bonds resulted in a rapid stress relaxation behavior, with a complete relaxation time 13.6 times shorter than a vitrimer only cross-linked with hydroxy ester bonds. This feature endowed its good self-healing and reprocessing capabilities. After self-healing at 180 °C, the maximum healing rate of mechanical properties was 91.8%. After three reprocesses, the maximum recovery rate of tensile strength was 120.2%. Furthermore, the combination of rigid and flexible segments and the synergistic effect of dual dynamic covalent bonds made DAx-DTSAy capable of use as a high-performance RTA. The lap shear strength of a DAx-DTSAy film on stainless steel reached 18.18 MPa after 15 min, with a recovery rate of 91.9% after 5 rebonding cycles. Additionally, DAx-DTSAy can be disassembled in chemical agents and exhibited better insulation properties compared to traditional epoxy resins. DAx-DTSAy can be employed as a novel high-performance adhesive in applications such as electronic devices and transportation, contributing to the development of thermosetting adhesives toward recyclability and sustainability.

Abstract:The research on self-healing polymers has been a hot topic. The encapsulated-monomer/catalyst, supramolecular self-assembly and reversible or dynamic covalent bond formation are the prevailingly adopted strategies. The alternative of irreversible covalent bond formation is, however, to be further developed. In this contribution, self-healing hyperbranched poly(aroyltriazole)s of PI and PII sharing such mechanism were developed. The polymers were synthesized by our developed metal-free click polymerizations of bis(aroylacetylene)s and triazide. They are processible and have excellent film-forming ability. High quality homogeneous films and sticks free from defects could be obtained by casting. The scratched films could be self-repaired upon general heating. The cut films and sticks could be healed by stacking or pressing the halves together at elevated temperature. Thus, these hyperbranched polymers could find broad applications in diverse areas and our design concept for self-healing materials should be generally applicable to other hyperbranched polymers with reactive groups on their peripheries.

Abstract:Enhanced dynamicity remains a matter of concern in vitrimer design for fast self-healing materials. In this study, we fabricated pseudo-cyclic vinylogous urethane (VU) vitrimers with accelerated associative exchange kinetics and enhanced mechanical properties based on a bottom-up strategy. Unique cation-templated pseudo-crown ether building blocks were prepared via coordination of alkali metal ions. The resultant pseudo-cyclic VU vitrimers possess higher crosslinking densities and more orderly arranged network topologies than their counterpart vitrimer based on linear building blocks, which were confirmed by swelling experiments and free volume parameters determination. Tensile strength and toughness were significantly improved, which are positively correlated with complexation strength. Furthermore, both stress relaxation and creep recovery experiments demonstrate that pseudo-cyclic vitrimers can undergo more rapidly topological rearrangement due to the synergetic effect of unique pseudo-cyclic structure and alkaline metal salts-promoted catalytic dynamic exchange. Given that the resultant vitrimers exhibit a high-efficient self-healable capability at room temperature. This work contributes to tailor-make fast room‐temperature self‐healing vitrimers via a building block design and expands the potential of vitrimers.

Abstract:Poly(1,2,3-triazolium) (PTAM) is a kind of self-healing adhesive based on dynamic reversible covalent 1,2,3-triazolium, which is formed through the reaction of halogenated hydrocarbon and 1,2,3-triazole and plays an important role in the properties of PTAM. Therefore, it is valuable to understand the effect of halogenated hydrocarbon crosslinkers on the properties of PTAM. A series of PTAM adhesive with different crosslinkers have been prepared. The reactivity between halogenated hydrocarbon and 1,2,3-triazole was different. Crosslinkers with longer chain, iodine substituted and aromatic structure improved the adhesive property of PTAM adhesive joints, which was up to 17 MPa. The first self-healing efficiency of PTAM adhesive joints with aliphatic bromine crosslinkers reached more than 100% and the maximum cycle times of them was more than 9 before failure. The self-healing properties of PTAMs depend on the segment motion and anti-thermal oxygen aging of PTAMs. These results provide some insights for the structural design of self-healing adhesive and dynamic covalent materials.

Abstract:Herein, a self-healing polyacrylate system was successfully prepared by introducing crosslinking agents containing disulfide bonds and monomers capable of forming quadruple hydrogen bonds through free radical copolymerization. This polymer material exhibited good toughness and self-healing properties through chemical and physical dual dynamic networks while maintaining excellent mechanical properties, which expanded the development path of self-healing acrylate materials. Compared to uncrosslinked and single dynamically crosslinked polymers, its elongation at break was as high as 437%, and its tensile strength was 5.48 MPa. Due to the presence of dual reversible dynamic bonds in the copolymer system, good self-healing was also achieved at 60 °C. In addition, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis measurements confirmed that the thermal stability and glass transition temperature of the material were improved owing to the presence of physical and chemical cross-linking networks.

Abstract:Abstract Most self-healing materials have complex chemical structures and require cumbersome preparation processes, which seriously limit their large-scale application in the fields of electronic skins, wearable devices, biomedical applications and soft robotics. In this study, self-healing elastomers based on π–π stacking between imidazole groups were prepared by simpler and faster photo-polymerization with butyl acrylate (BA) and 1-vinyl imidazole (VIM), coded as BVn. Due to the imidazole groups in the side chains, the prepared elastomers had excellent self-repairing properties. After healing at 60 °C for 24 h, the strength and elongation at break of the repaired sample recovered to 97.2% and 95.4% of the original values, respectively. Importantly, the BVn based elastomers relied on π–π stacking interactions between imidazole groups rather than covalent crosslinks and could be recycled. These new self-repairing composite elastomers with high thermal stabilities, high elongations at break, good recoverabilites and high self-repairing efficiencies have great application potentials.

Abstract:Acylhydrazone bonds can participate in dynamic exchange reactions under acid-stimulated conditions, and disulfide bonds can participate in dynamic exchange reactions under thermally stimulated conditions. It is of great significance to prepare epoxy vitrimer that can rapidly self-repair under acid and thermal stimulation conditions. In this paper, vanillin was used as raw material, and monomer (VAN-AD) containing acylhydrazone bond was synthesized by reaction with adipic dihydrazide. Then, VAN-AD and 4-aminophenyl disulfide (SS) were cured together with glycerol triglycidyl ether to prepare an epoxy vitrimer with acylhydrazone and disulfide dual dynamic covalent bonds. Where VAN-AD provides some of the flexible chain segments and acylhydrazone bonds and SS provides the aromatic phenyl and disulfide bonds. The material was prepared in a simple process and under mild condition, and the properties of the material were optimized by changing the ratio of VAN-AD to SS. The T g of the material was 50 °C when the ratio of SS was the highest, the thermal stability was enhanced with the increase of the ratio of SS, and the maximum tensile strength up to 50.9 MPa, and the material can be completely degraded by DMF with 5% HCl. It is worth noting that the material shows rapid self-healing properties under acid-heat conditions, self-healing rates up to 97.37%, and the tensile strength can reach 26 MPa after repair. The material can be successfully remodeled by hot pressing for 1 h at 140 °C and 10 MPa.

Mechanically Strong, Thermally Healable, and Recyclable Epoxy Vitrimers Enabled by ZnAl-Layer Double Hydroxides

Abstract:To meet the demand of sustainable development, epoxy vitrimers based on the dynamic transesterification reaction (DTER) have received considerable attention recently due to their reprocessability and repairability. However, they suffer from low mechanical strength and rely heavily on external catalysts to ensure their curing and repair. Herein, we report a facile design of a novel ZnAl-LDH-catalyzed epoxy vitrimer nanocomposite via introducing ZnAl-layered double metal hydroxide (ZnAl-LDH) nanosheets. Our results show that ZnAl-LDH can be well dispersed in the epoxy vitrimer. Notably, ZnAl-LDH has multifunctionality, which can simultaneously catalyze the curing reaction and enhance the mechanical strength and repairable efficiency of the resultant vitrimer. For instance, the peak curing temperature of epoxy vitrimer with 2 wt % ZnAl-LDH is 8 °C lower than that of an epoxy vitrimer under the same loading between Zn2+ of Zn(OAc)2, demonstrating a strong catalytic action. The tensile strength and Young’s modulus of ZnAl-LDH/epoxy resin (ER) increase from 18 and 156 MPa to 42 and 307 MPa, respectively, due to the reinforcing effect of ZnAl-LDH and the increased cross-linking density. The repairable efficiency of ZnAl-LDH/ER can reach 95% after repair at 200 °C for 1 h, which is mainly due to the abundant catalytic sites and large contact areas of the ZnAl-LDH lamella. Hence, this work offers an innovative and scalable strategy for creating epoxy vitrimers combining exceptional mechanical strength and high repairable efficiency, which holds great promise for many practical applications in the industry.

Abstract:Bio‐based vitrimers with self‐healing ability. In this article, we report the synthesis of dynamic covalent polymer network (DCPN)‐enabled vitrimers derived from gum rosin—a pine tree extract. The concept of Diels Alder (DA) thermo‐reversibility has been used to introduce self‐healing/dynamic covalent ability into the polymer systems. For this purpose, the diene moieties were incorporated in the gum rosin‐based polymer network, and the bismaleimides served as the dienophiles. The thermo‐reversible crosslinks formed between the diene and dienophile moieties can enhance the service life of the materials by improving the durability, mechanical as well as chemical properties of the materials. Upon damage, the thermo‐reversible DA bonds de‐crosslink resulting in smaller chain segments, enabling the material to flow to the site of damage and seal the fractured edges. The formation of DA crosslinks has been confirmed by using Fourier transform‐infrared spectroscopic technique. Scanning electron microscopy analysis was used to verify the self‐healing ability of the resin matrix. The healing process was studied after manual scratches were made. The polymers' ability to heal multiple times is investigated using differential scanning calorimetry. The adhesion strength of the self‐healing material has been examined on variety of substrates such as glass, steel, and concrete. The materials exhibited superior adhesion strength on glass substrate.

Abstract:There is a trade-off between mechanical and self-healing performance for cross-linked self-healing materials. Herein, we design a polyurethane material containing triple synergy dynamic bonds to address the dilemma. The as-prepared polyurethane exhibits a maximum stress of 27.3 MPa and excellent self-healing performance. Specifically, boric acid is used as a cross-linker and the network cross-linked with boronic ester bonds under alkaline conditions is highly beneficial in terms of mechanical properties. Meanwhile, disulfide bonds and reversible boronic ester bonds located at the cross-linked point and main chain are successively broken upon being damaged, which is conducive to better fluidity of chains and endows the material with superior healing efficiency and multiple cycles of healing. Consequently, the high-performance self-healing material is of great potential in the fields of high-performance coating, aerospace, and load-bearing rubber.

Abstract:Epoxy (EP) vitrimers are currently regarded as ideal substitutes for traditional thermosetting resins, as this class of materials combines the advantages of thermoplastic and thermoset polymers. However, maintaining the high performance of EP vitrimers with excellent healing properties remains a challenge. In this work, a novel hardener combining disulfide and imine bonds through the reaction of Schiff base (4-AFD-VAN) was designed and then used to prepare the EP vitrimer with dual-dynamic covalent bonds. Compared to the single-disulfide-containing vitrimer (EVP-4-AFD), the prepared EP vitrimer (EPV-4-AFD-VAN) exhibited a lower activation energy and a faster stress relaxation. Moreover, EPV-4-AFD-VAN showed a tensile strength of up to 71.5 MPa and maintained a recovery ratio of approximately 90.0% during the three cycles. Similar to traditional thermoset EP, EPV-4-AFD-VAN retained its good solvent resistance, high breakdown strength, and good dielectric properties, which can be chemically degraded in suitable solvents, demonstrating its environmental sustainability.

Epoxy-based multifunctional re-bondable polymer with self-healing, shape memory and superb bonding properties

Abstract:Thermoset epoxy resin-based materials are widely used, but their permanent cross-linked network limits their processability and reusability, which can lead to environmental burdens. In this work, by exploiting the weak reactivity of aniline to design appropriate reaction ratios, we achieved a linear link between the epoxy resin and the curing agent. This linear link, along with the crosslinking points provided by the flexibly branched polyurethanes, avoids the inherent brittleness associated with the highly crosslinked network of conventional epoxy resins. As a result, the adhesive exhibits extraordinary improvements in extensibility and toughness. The lap shear strength, tensile strength and elongation at break reach 11.9 MPa, 14.4 MPa and 607 %, respectively. The fracture toughness is as high as 109.6 kJ/m2, far beyond the existing epoxy adhesives. The synergistic effect of disulfide bonds and hydrogen bonds confers the adhesive with self-healing and repeatable bonding characteristics. The multi-level hydrogen bonding and appropriate phase separation structure are key to optimizing toughness, resulting in excellent comprehensive performance. The introduction of polyurethane not only improves toughness but also enhances the interfacial bonding force between the adhesive and the substrate, broadening the scope of applications. The prepared high-performance polymers provide new insights into reusable epoxy adhesives.

Abstract:Despite decades of development, the delamination damage of multidirectional laminates still accounts for a considerable proportion of the failure problems encountered in the actual industrial field. The internal cracks that are difficult to be repaired make composites show a disposable essence. Thus, self-healable carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) has attracted the attentions in recent years. Vitrimer is a polymer containing dynamic cross-linking networks, which could be repaired after damage without using extrinsic healing agents. However, vitrimeric CFRP (vCFRP) laminates are also inevitably susceptible to delamination damage like traditional thermosetting composites owing to the lack of reinforcements in the thickness direction, whereas the reports about delamination healing of vCFRP remains limited. In this study, a triepoxy was introduced into an existing epoxy system to synthesize the self-healable vitrimer based on transesterification. It showed that the polyfunctional groups could improve the mechanical properties and glass transition temperature ( T g ) of cured vitrimer, and laid a groundwork for engineering application. Then the effects of stacking interfaces on the interlaminar properties and the twice interlaminar healing efficiency of the unidirectional vCFRP were studied. The results indicated that the load-displacement curves, R -curves, fracture toughness, fiber bridging length, fiber bridging effect and crack growth behaviour were strongly influenced by the stacking interfaces. The interlaminar healing efficiencies of the specimens after two complete delamination failure exceeded 80%. Development of such dynamic polymer composites could provide meaningful guidelines for improving the reliability, safety and maintainability of structural materials.

Abstract:Vitrimers, a new generation of polymeric materials, have been widely investigated to resolve the intersection of thermoplastics and thermosets, relying on the exchange reactions in networks. However, it is still a challenge to develop multi-functional vitrimer materials. Herein, multi-functional epoxy vitrimers that exhibited controllable dynamic properties, multiple-stimuli response, crack-healing and fracture-welding were prepared by introducing Fe3O4 nanoparticles into the networks of dual dynamic epoxy vitrimers. It was revealed that the typical dynamic parameters of vitrimer including the characteristic relaxation time (τ), activation energy (Ea), Arrhenius prefactor (τ0) and topology freezing transition temperature (Tv) could be readily adjusted in the multi-functional epoxy vitrimers. Moreover, the multi-functional epoxy vitrimers were simultaneously responsive to temperature, near infrared and magnetic field, while they could be driven by magnets, heated by near infrared and healed or welded by heating. Upon heating or near infrared, the cracks in samples could be successfully healed. Besides, by the cooperation of heating and magnet or near infrared and magnet, the multi-functional epoxy vitrimers were able to achieve non-touch welding of factures. These multi-functional epoxy vitrimers might have potential application in improving the reliability and extending the lifetime of polymeric materials. Meanwhile, the facile way to functionalize the epoxy vitrimers is estimated to be suitable for other vitrimer materials.

Abstract:Vitrimer is a new class of polymeric materials which can be reprocessed to any shape while being permanently cross-linked. We designed and synthesized a catalyst-free network with poly(dimethylsiloxane)etherimide (PDMS-NH2), terephthalaldehyde (TA), and tri(2-aminoethyl)amine (TREA) through the condensation reaction between amino groups and aldehyde groups. As a result of the exchange reaction of the dynamic imine bond obtained, this PDMS network exhibits the nature of vitrimer-like material, which is examined by solubility and stress-relaxation experiments, and the relaxation time is as short as 64 s at 130 degrees C. In addition, the vitrimer-like PDMS is malleable and capable of self-healing, and the mechanical properties can be maintained even after three consecutive breaking/mold pressing cycle's. Especially, besides heating, this vitrimer-like PDMS can also be recycled and reshaped at ambient temperature due to the exchange reaction of dynamic imine bond when immersed in water, which will potentially lead to green processing of the elastomers.
