Abstract:Hybridizing nanocarbons, such as carbon nanotubes (CNT) or graphene, with magnetic metals is a powerful strategy towards designing high-performance microwave absorber due to the resulting synergetic loss mechanisms and tunable electromagnetic properties. Herein, CNT and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) have been respectively coupled with amorphous wire through electrodeposition in a complementary fashion. The absorption performance of the hybrid fibers proves to be tunable via controlling the thickness and morphology of the CNT or by regulating the number of oxygen-functional groups of rGO through thermal annealing. The CNT/wire hybrid structure effectively strengthens both the interfacial polarization of CNT through the support of circular-shaped conductive substrate, and the ferro-magnetic resonance of wire through the coupling with magnetic impurities in CNT. As for the rGO/wire fiber, dual-band absorption occurs in the sample annealed at 900 degrees C with an optimal absorption loss of -35 dB at 11.3 GHz, derived from dielectric loss mechanisms such as removal of functional groups and induced defective structure in combination with enhanced magnetic losses in the hybrid structure. Such complementary design opens up new horizons to scale up the excellent assets of nano-carbons into the macroscale and develop functional adaptive materials for high-frequency applications. Fabrication of ferroferric oxide–carbon/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites derived from Fe-based metal–organic frameworks for microwave absorption

Abstract:Microwave absorbers with strong absorption, broad bandwidth, thin thickness and low filler loading are highly desirable in electromagnetic absorption field. In this work, ferroferric oxide–carbon/reduced graphene oxide (Fe3O4–C/RGO) nanocomposites were fabricated by a facile solvothermal and high-temperature pyrolysis two-step strategy. Results of morphology observations demonstrated that numerous carbon frameworks with unique octahedral morphology were uniformly loaded on the crumpled surfaces of thinly flake-like RGO, and that well-designed entanglement structure consisting of octahedral carbon frameworks and crumpled RGO was observed in the as-prepared nanocomposites. Moreover, the effects of additive amounts of graphene oxide and filler loadings on the electromagnetic parameters and microwave absorption properties of as-synthesized nanocomposites were elaborately investigated. Remarkably, the obtained nanocomposites with an additive amount of graphene oxide of 2.43 wt% displayed the minimum reflection loss of −60.5 dB at 4.8 GHz with a matching thickness of 3.6 mm and effective absorption bandwidth (reflection loss less than −10 dB) of 5.5 GHz (from 11.2 to 16.7 GHz) with an ultrathin thickness of merely 1.5 mm. Besides, the possible microwave absorption mechanisms were proposed. This work could shed light on designing and fabricating carbon-based magnetic nanocomposites as lightweight and high-performance microwave absorbers.

Rational Construction of Hierarchically Porous Fe-Co/N-Doped Carbon/rGO Composites for Broadband Microwave Absorption

Abstract:Developing lightweight and broadband microwave absorbers for dealing with serious electromagnetic radiation pollution is a great challenge. Here, a novel Fe-Co/N-doped carbon/reduced graphene oxide (Fe-Co/NC/rGO) composite with hierarchically porous structure was designed and synthetized by in situ growth of Fe-doped Co-based metal organic frameworks (Co-MOF) on the sheets of porous cocoon-like rGO followed by calcination. The Fe-Co/NC composites are homogeneously distributed on the sheets of porous rGO. The Fe-Co/NC/rGO composite with multiple components (Fe/Co/NC/rGO) causes magnetic loss, dielectric loss, resistance loss, interfacial polarization, and good impedance matching. The hierarchically porous structure of the Fe-Co/NC/rGO enhances the multiple reflections and scattering of microwaves. Compared with the Co/NC and Fe-Co/NC, the hierarchically porous Fe-Co/NC/rGO composite exhibits much better microwave absorption performances due to the rational composition and porous structural design. Its minimum reflection loss (RLmin) reaches - 43.26 dB at 11.28 GHz with a thickness of 2.5 mm, and the effective absorption frequency (RL ≤ - 10 dB) is up to 9.12 GHz (8.88-18 GHz) with the same thickness of 2.5 mm. Moreover, the widest effective bandwidth of 9.29 GHz occurs at a thickness of 2.63 mm. This work provides a lightweight and broadband microwave absorbing material while offering a new idea to design excellent microwave absorbers with multicomponent and hierarchically porous structures.
Rational Self-Assembly of Fe3O4 Nanostructures on Reduced Graphene Oxide for Enhanced Microwave Absorption

Abstract:Tailored design and fabrication of microwave absorption materials is of great importance to the development of electromagnetic technology. In the present work, we report a facile solvothermal method to construct Fe3O4/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites with adjustable morphologies and components. The effect of rGO content on the Fe3O4 morphology is investigated and it is found that the morphology of Fe3O4 varies from self-assembled solid/flower-like structure to monodisperse nanoparticles with the increase of rGO content. Impressively, the corresponding microwave absorption performance of the Fe3O4/rGO composites is remarkably improved due to the synergistic electric and magnetic effect between rGO and Fe3O4. Specifically, when the amount of GO is 10 wt. %, the as-prepared Fe3O4/rGO composite shows a minimum reflection loss of −64.7 dB at 6.6 GHz with an absorber thickness of 4.5 mm and a broad effective absorption bandwidth of 13.6 GHz with the thickness of 1.5–5 mm. Our result shows that an appropriate amount of rGO can achieve matched impedance matching value resulting in the enhancement of electromagnetic absorption.

Abstract:The design of a high-performance microwave absorbing material is highly dependent on the synergistic structural design of heterostructure and the appropriate material compositions. Herein, a series of composites of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and core-shell structured γ-Fe2O3@C nanoparticles have been achieved by a hydrothermal and in-situ chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. In particular, the structure of the carbon layer, including its graphitization and thickness, can be controlled by optimizing the CVD conditions, which is beneficial to tailor the impedance matching and dielectric loss. The rationally designed RGO/γ-Fe2O3@C composite has multiple electromagnetic dissipation mechanisms. The effective absorption ranges of an optimal sample at a filling rate of 20% can cover 100% X-band and 98% Ku-band at thicknesses of 3.0 mm and 2.2 mm, respectively. This finding suggested that the controllable fabrication of core-shell heterostructures could be viable approach to upgrade the microwave absorption performance of transition metal oxides.

Abstract:Carbon-nanotube-based composites are highly desirable for addressing the difficulties relevant to the quality of electromagnetic wave absorbers. The introduction of lightweight nanocomposites for constructing new structures has been widely studied due to the transformation in impedance matching and attenuation. In this paper, a novel carbon nanotube-graphene oxide-zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (CNT/RGO/ZIF-8) ternary hybrid structure was successfully fabricated by a facile solvothermal process. The ZIF-8 was entangled initially by carbon nanotubes via the π–π interaction between organic ligands and benzene ring structure in CNT. Then, the CNT/ZIF-8 composite was immobilized on the surface of RGO by interacting with the active functional group of RGO. The structure and performance for CNT, CNT/ZIF-8, and CNT/RGO/ZIF-8 were compared to investigate the interaction mechanisms between components, and CNT/ZIF-8 exhibited a distinct improvement for microwave absorption performance. Furthermore, the introduction of RGO can accelerate the amelioration of absorption characteristics. The interfacial bonding between CNT, RGO, and ZIF-8 exerts a great influence on the absorbing quality. The mechanism of absorption of electromagnetic waves was explained by the synergistic effects of conduction loss, polarization behaviors, and eddy current. The unique structure could offer new insights to exploit advanced microwave-absorption materials.

Abstract:Interfacial and/or magnetic-dielectric synergistic effects are important avenues to boost microwave absorption properties. In order to simultaneously utilize these effects, we elaborately designed mixed-dimensional Fe3O4-FeCO3/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) multicomponent nanocomposites (MCNCs) in large scale via a facile process of hydrothermal and freeze-drying. The microstructural investigation revealed that two-dimensional RGO, one-dimensional MWCNTs and zero-dimensional Fe3O4-FeCO3 nanoparticles were well bounded to generate the typical mixed-dimensional structure. By controlling the amounts of initial reactants, the Fe3O4-FeCO3/MWCNTs/RGO MCNCs displayed improved impedance matching features, polarization and conduction loss abilities, which lead to the evidently improved electromagnetic absorption properties. The Fe3O4-FeCO3/MWCNTs/RGO MCNCs simultaneously exhibited excellent absorption ability, large absorption bandwidth, low density and thin matching thickness. Generally, this work not only proposed an effective route to make the best of magnetic-dielectric synergy and interfacial strategy for exploiting novel microwave absorption materials, but also presented a simple approach to synthesize magnetic MWCNTs/RGO-based mixed-dimensional MCNCs.
Magnetic Carbon Nanotubes/Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites: One-Step Controllable Production, and Their Excellent Microwave Absorption Capabilities

Abstract:In this research, three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical networks of magnetic carbon nanotubes/graphene oxide (CNTs/GO) nanocomposites (NCs) were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method with the idea of constructing more interface contacts, a double loss mechanism and synergy effect. The obtained results showed that the content of NCs gradually transitioned from CoCO3 to CoxFe3-xO4. Further, CoCO3-CoxFe3-xO4/CNTs/GO quaternary NCs and CoxFe3-xO4/CNTs/GO ternary NCs could be selectively synthesized when the Co:Fe molar ratio decreased from 1:1 to 1:3. The as-prepared samples displayed excellent microwave absorption properties (MAPs) in terms of the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) and the corresponding absorption bandwidth (FBcor) with reflection loss values lower than -10 dB. The RLmin and large FBcor values for the as-prepared samples were -54.69 dB and 2.36 GHz, -63.99 dB and 2.48 GHz, -63.36 dB and 2.68 GHz, respectively. The designed 3D hierarchical networked structure of magnetic GO/CNTs NCs displayed outstanding comprehensive MAPs, which could deliver a practical and effective strategy to develop high-performance microwave absorbers (MAs), considering their low cost, lightweight, and high stability.

Abstract:In order to simultaneously effective utilization of interface engineering, dielectric loss and magnetic loss attenuation mechanisms, we elaborately constructed and synthesized the mixed-dimensional magnetic nanoparticles (NPs)@carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-reduced graphene oxide (RGO) van der Waals heterostructures (VDWHs) through the catalytic decomposition of C2H2 over FeOOH-RGO. By controlling the decomposition time, different categories and CNTs contents of heterostructured nanohybrids such as Fe3O4@CNTs-RGO, Fe@Fe3C@CNTs-RGO and Fe@Fe2C@CNTs-RGO, which consisted of two-dimensional (2-D) RGO nanosheets, zero-dimensional (0-D) magnetic NPs and one-dimensional (1-D) CNTs, could be selectively synthesized. The obtained results indicated that the as-prepared mixed-dimensional magnetic NPs@CNTs-RGO VDWHs displayed the excellent microwave absorption capabilities, which were proved to be attributed to the quarter-wavelength matching model and good impedance matching. Moreover, because of the improved dielectric loss abilities, values of attenuation constant, defects and/or multiple interfacial polarizations, the obtained Fe@Fe2C@CNTs-RGO samples exhibited evidently enhanced microwave absorption performances. Therefore, a simple and effective route was proposed to synthesize the mixed-dimensional magnetic NPs@CNTs-RGO VDWHs, which provided a new platform for the designing and production of high performance microwave absorption materials. The combination of these two materials thus proved to give remarkable microwave absorption properties, owing to enhanced magnetic losses and favorable impedance matching conditions.
Constructing Mixed-Dimensional Lightweight Flexible Carbon Foam/carbon Nanotubes-Based Heterostructures: an Effective Strategy to Achieve Tunable and Boosted Microwave Absorption

Abstract:Taking full advantage of interface engineering to strengthen interface polarization is an effective strategy to improve microwave absorption. Therefore, constructing the mixed-dimensional heterostructures and/or threedimensional (3D) interconnected network structures should be attractive pathways to create the abundant interfaces for enhanced interfacial effect. Herein, mixed-dimensional framework structure carbon foam (CF)/ carbon nanotubes (CNTs)@Fe3C@Fe3O4 samples consisting of 3D CF, one-dimensional (1D) CNTs and zerodimensional (0D) Fe3C@Fe3O4 nanoparticles were elaborately designed and produced through a simple catalytic chemical vapor deposition process. The as-prepared CF/CNTs@Fe3C@Fe3O4 heterostructures with the different contents of CNTs could be selectively produced by regulating the pyrolysis time. Owing to the unique structure and excellent synergistic effects, the obtained mixed-dimensional CF/CNTs@Fe3C@Fe3O4 samples presented the excellent comprehensive electromagnetic wave absorption performances (EMWAPs) including strong absorption capabilities, broad absorption bandwidths, thin matching thicknesses and low densities. Furthermore, the obtained results demonstrated that the enhanced content of CNTs greatly boosted their conduction and polarization loss abilities, which resulted in the enhanced comprehensive EMWAPs. Therefore, our findings not only offered a simple strategy to produce the mixed-dimensional framework structure magnetic CF/ CNTs-based heterostructures as excellent lightweight high-efficiency microwave absorbers, but also provided an effective pathway to make the best of interface engineering for enhancing interface polarization.

Hierarchical Fe3o4/Fe@C@Mos2 Core-Shell Nanofibers For Efficient Microwave Absorption

Abstract:Designing one-dimensional (1D) magnetic-carbon composites microwave absorbers is a promising strategy that can meet the current demand for high-performance microwave absorption (MA) materials. In this work, hierarchical structured Fe3O4/Fe@C@MoS2 nanofibers were successfully obtained via a simple three-step method. 1D Fe3O4/Fe@C nanofibers were fabricated through electrospinning technology and in-situ polymerization followed by carbonization and reduction in H-2/N-2 atmosphere. MoS2 nanosheets grew irregularly on the surface of 1D Fe3O4/Fe@C nanofibers to form the flower-like structure. The morphology, composition and magnetism of samples were systematically investigated. Furthermore, electromagnetic characteristics and MA properties of Fe3O4/Fe@C nanofibers and Fe3O4/Fe@C@MoS2 nanofibers were compared. The minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of Fe3O4/Fe@C@MoS2 nanofibers could reach -53.79 dB at 11.12 GHz and the corresponding absorption bandwidth (RL < -10 dB) of 4.4 GHz was achieved at the absorber thickness of 2.24 mm. This work combines electrospinning technology with traditional chemical synthesis to prepare a novel 1D core-shell microwave absorber, which provides some inspiration for preparing MA material in the future. Heterogeneous iron-nickel compound/RGO composites with tunable microwave absorption frequency and ultralow filler loading

Abstract:We fabricated heterogeneous iron-nickel compound/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composites to obtain lightweight and high-efficiency microwave absorption materials with tunable absorption frequency. Using a facile hydrothermal route in combination with calcination at varying temperatures of 500-700 degrees C, the magnetic components Fe0.64Ni0.36, Fe0.64Ni0.36@Fe2Ni2N, and Fe2Ni2N were obtained. Due to strong interfacial polarization and dipole polarization as well as the conductive network formed by the substantial number of interfaces, all the magnetic RGO hybrids presented remarkable electromagnetic wave attenuation ability even when the filler content was only 5.2 wt%. More importantly, the optimization of reflection loss and tunable absorption frequency could be successfully realized by tuning the hybrid architecture and electromagnetic properties. This work reveals the mechanism of polarization-related dielectric relaxation of RGO, which provides new opportunities for designing lightweight and highly efficient microwave-absorbing materials by fully utilizing the hetero-interfacial effects.

Abstract:Metal‐oxo cluster precursor strategy is proposed to construct magnetic–carbon composites with well‐dispersed multiphase magnetic nanoparticles. Iron‐oxo cluster Fe15 is selected as novel precursor and the derived Fe/Fe3O4@Fe3C–graphene oxide (GO) and Fe/Fe3O4–carbon nanotubes (CNT) exhibit high‐efficiency microwave absorption at low‐/middle‐frequency due to dielectric‐magnetic synergy arisen from multicomponent magnets and abundant heterointerfaces. This work opens up a novel method for designing low‐/middle‐frequency absorbers with high performance. With the advent of wireless technology, magnetic–carbon composites with strong electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption capability in low‐/middle‐frequency range are highly desirable. However, it remains challenging for rational construction of such absorbers bearing multiple magnetic components that show uniform distribution and favorable magnetic loss. Herein, a facile metal‐oxo cluster (MOC) precursor strategy is presented to produce high‐efficiency magnetic carbon composites. Nanosized MOC Fe15 shelled with organic ligands is employed as a novel magnetic precursor, thus allowing in situ formation and uniform deposition of multicomponent magnetic Fe/Fe3O4@Fe3C and Fe/Fe3O4 nanoparticles on graphene oxides (GOs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), respectively. Owing to the good dispersity and efficient magnetic‐dielectric synergy, quaternary Fe/Fe3O4@Fe3C–GO exhibits strong low‐frequency absorption with RLmin of −53.5 dB at C‐band and absorption bandwidth covering 3.44 GHz, while ultrahigh RLmin of −73.2 dB is achieved at X‐band for ternary Fe/Fe3O4‐CNT. The high performance for quaternary and ternary composites is further supported by the optimal specific EMW absorption performance (‐15.7 dB mm−1 and −31.8 dB mm−1) and radar cross‐section reduction (21.72 dB m2 and 34.37 dB m2). This work provides a new avenue for developing lightweight low‐/middle‐frequency EMW absorbers, and will inspire the investigation of more advanced EMW absorbers with multiple magnetic components and regulated microstructures.

Abstract:We fabricated heterogeneous iron-nickel compound/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composites to obtain lightweight and high-efficiency microwave absorption materials with tunable absorption frequency. Using a facile hydrothermal route in combination with calcination at varying temperatures of 500-700 degrees C, the magnetic components Fe0.64Ni0.36, Fe0.64Ni0.36@Fe2Ni2N, and Fe2Ni2N were obtained. Due to strong interfacial polarization and dipole polarization as well as the conductive network formed by the substantial number of interfaces, all the magnetic RGO hybrids presented remarkable electromagnetic wave attenuation ability even when the filler content was only 5.2 wt%. More importantly, the optimization of reflection loss and tunable absorption frequency could be successfully realized by tuning the hybrid architecture and electromagnetic properties. This work reveals the mechanism of polarization-related dielectric relaxation of RGO, which provides new opportunities for designing lightweight and highly efficient microwave-absorbing materials by fully utilizing the hetero-interfacial effects.

Abstract:It is well accepted that the microwave absorption performance of ferrite can be enhanced via the hybridization. However, it is still very challenging to design the hierarchical nanostructure of ferrite hybrids to fabricate wave absorbing composites with both the high efficiency and lightweight. Herein, we successfully realize the in-situ synthesis of nickel ferrite/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (NiFe2O4/MWCNTs) hybrids with a large-scale production by the hydrothermal method. The structural characteristics, morphology, electromagnetic and microwave absorption properties were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and vector network analyzer. The morphological study shows that NiFe2O4 nanoparticles with a small size (tens of nanometers) are coated on the MWCNTs, leading to a three-dimensional hierarchical nanostructure. The NiFe2O4/MWCNTs hybrids show satisfied microwave absorption properties. Typically, the optimized sample shows the minimum reflection loss of −19 dB at 11.3 GHz, and the bandwidth of the reflectivity below −10 dB is 2.5 GHz with a thin thickness of 1.5 mm. This result shall be due to the improved dielectric losses or interface polarization etc. Our results demonstrate a facile approach for the design of ferrite-based microwave absorber to meet the requirements of lightweight, thin-thickness and high efficiency.

Abstract:Nanocomposites of MOF-derived N-doped-carbon-wrapped cobalt anchored on reduced graphene oxide (Co@NC@RGO) have been successfully fabricated for use as microwave absorption materials. A unique core-shell nanostructure with cobalt nanoparticles as core and N-doped graphitized carbon as shell was grown on the surface of laminated reduced graphene oxide (RGO). An enhanced synergistic effect between magnetic and dielectric components can be readily achieved by changing the dispersion of Co@NC nanoparticles on RGO. The as-synthesized microspheres are composed of numerous nanoscale core-shell Co@NC units, which combined magnetic Co cores with intrinsically contributing magnetic loss and N-doped graphitized carbon providing a pathway for electron transfer as well as transition between magnetic Co cores and high electrical conductivity of RGO. The resulting Co@NC@RGO composites exhibit excellent reflection loss (RL) values and effective absorption bandwidths. The optimized Co@NC@RGO-3 minimum RL (RLmin) value could reach -46.5dB at 9.4GHz with a thickness of 3.5mm. Tuning the thickness from 1.5-5mm, the effectivity absorption frequency range could achieve up to 14.3GHz (from 3.7 to 18GHz). The excellent microwave absorption performance may be attributed to the magnetic loss, dielectric loss and interfacial polarization.

Abstract:A ferromagnetic nanocomposite Fe 3 O 4 @Fe/Fe 4 N/CFe 15.1 -NrGO, which is composed of elemental iron-based, iron nitride-based and iron carbide-coated ferroferric oxide core-shell structured nanospheres and nitrogen-doped partially-reduced graphene oxide (NrGO), has been successfully prepared by combining an initial hydrothermal processing, subsequent reducing agent impregnation and final solid-state thermal reduction. And then, we investigate the microwave absorption performance of Fe 3 O 4 @Fe/Fe 4 N/CFe 15.1 -NrGO nanocomposite in paraffin dispersion. When the loading mass of Fe 3 O 4 @Fe/Fe 4 N/CFe 15.1 -NrGO is 9.0 wt% in paraffin dispersion, the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of microwave is as high as −30.5 dB at the thickness of 1.5 mm, and the corresponding effective absorption bandwidth (EAB < -10 dB) of 4.4 GHz (13.6 ∼ 18.0 GHz) is the 27.5% of the entirely measuring bandwidth from (2.0 ∼ 18.0 GHz). The excellent microwave absorbing performances of nanocomposite Fe 3 O 4 @Fe/Fe 4 N/CFe 15.1 -NrGO may be attributed to the following twoaspects: (i) the interfacial polarization of the core-shell structure of spheroidal iron-based constituents and the interface between an iron-based nanosphere and dielectric lamellar NrGO and (ii) a synergistic effect between dielectric properties of lamellar-structured NrGO and the magnetic properties of core-sell structured Fe 3 O 4 @Fe/Fe 4 N/CFe 15.1 . This electromagnetic absorber with core-shell structure and dielectric graphene properties can satisfy the requirements of ideal absorbers, such as strong absorption ability, broad absorption bandwidth, thin absorber thickness and low density. In addition, this work also provides a promising strategy to synthesize multivariate two-dimensional nanocomposite with light-weight and high absorption performance.

Abstract:The rational regulation of the magnetic-dielectric composition and microstructures of the absorber is considered an important approach to optimize both the impedance matching and the electromagnetic microwave attenuation ability. Along these lines, a novel architecture-controlled large-caliber carbon nanotube/mesoporous carbon/Fe3C nanoparticle-based hybrid nanocomposites (CNT/C/Fe3C), which were derived from the CNT/polyimide (PI) assemblies anchoring ferric oxide hydrate nanoprecipitates, are presented in this work. The proposed configurations were prepared by applying a cooperative co-assembly strategy and high-temperature pyrolysis procedure for the development of an ultra-lightweight electromagnetic microwave absorber. The employed hierarchically tubular heterogeneous architecture is composed of a highly graphited CNT supporting skeleton, polyimide assemblies-converted carbon interlayer with mesopores, and uniformly distributed magnetic Fe3C nanoparticles. This unique hierarchical structure can not only induce multiple reflection and scattering effects of the incident electromagnetic microwave but also trigger dipole/interfacial polarization, ferromagnetic resonance and eddy current loss that are beneficial for the synergistic dielectric and magnetic loss. Moreover, the large-caliber CNT and mesoporous carbon interlayer can endow the as-prepared absorber with lightweight characteristics. Hence, the proposed CNT/C-EDA/Fe3C-900 hybrid nanocomposite exhibits a minimum reflection loss (RL) of -48.4 dB at a matching thickness of 3.2 mm, and the effective absorption bandwidth (RL ≤ -10 dB) almost covers the whole X-band only with a 5 wt% filler loading. Undoubtedly, these encouraging outcomes will promote the development of hierarchical engineering techniques of novel magnetic-dielectric nanocomposite absorbers.
