Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) provides broadband, high-resolution, high-sensitivity amplitude and phase spectra within a short measurement time, thus holding promises for atmospheric spectroscopy. However, previous research has been limited to measuring over open-air paths of about 20 km. Here, by developing a bistatic set-up using time–frequency dissemination and high-power optical frequency combs, we implement DCS over a 113 km turbulent horizontal open-air path. We successfully measure the absorbance spectra of CO 2 and H 2 O with a 7 nm spectral bandwidth and a 10 kHz frequency accuracy, and achieve a sensing precision of <2 ppm in 5 min and <0.6 ppm in 36 min for CO 2 . We anticipate our system to find immediate applications in the monitoring of urban greenhouse gas and gaseous pollutants emission. Our technology may also be extended to satellite-based DCS for greenhouse gas monitoring and calibration measurements.

Abstract:Open-path dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) significantly enhances our understanding of regional trace gases. However, due to technical challenges, cost considerations, and eye-safety regulations, its sensing range and flexibility remain limited. The photon-counting DCS demonstrated recently heralds potential innovations over open-path DCS. Nevertheless, a major challenge in open-air applications of this approach lies in accurately extracting information from the arrival time of photons that have traversed the turbulent atmosphere. Here, we demonstrate a photon-level dual-comb interferometer for field deployment in open-air environments, uniquely designed to counteract the impact of optical path-length variations caused by atmospheric turbulence and fiber-length wandering. Under variable optical path-length conditions, 20nm broadband absorption spectrum of H13C14N is acquired, with the power per comb line detected as low as 4 attowatt . Furthermore, this photon-level DCS achieves comb-line resolution with a quantum-noise-limited signal-to-noise (SNR). This paves the way for novel open-path DCS applications, including non-cooperative target sensing and sensing over a hundred-kilometers range, all within a portable, fieldable, eye-safety and low power consumption system.

Abstract:From the perspective of error compensation in the sampling process, a digital calibration algorithm was studied for the processing of spectral data in dual-comb spectroscopy. In this algorithm, dynamic adaptation to phase fluctuations maintained constant measurement results of spectral line positions and intensities. A mode-resolved broadband absorption spectrum was obtained over the full-spectral range of the comb with a Hertz linewidth of radio frequency comb mode. The measured spectrum spanned over 10 THz, which covered the multiplexed absorption regions of mixed gases, such as CO2 and N2O. The calibrated interferograms were also capable of direct coherent averaging in the time domain. The transmittance obtained deviated from the theoretical calculation by no more than 2% in the whole spectral span.

Abstract:Open-path dual-comb spectroscopy has emerged as a promising technique for regional multigas mon-itoring with its conspicuous advantages of broadband spectral coverage, high spectral resolution, and rapid update rate. However, it is challenging to realize its full potential due to the undesirable mutual coherence of the dual-comb source and turbulence in the air path, which hinder it from field-deployed open-path applications. Here, phase-sensitive open-path dual-comb spectroscopy based on free-running combs is reported, in which dual-purpose compensation is proposed to provide immunity against both the time jitter of comb sources and turbulent noise. Broadband and high-fidelity atmospheric amplitude and phase spectra containing gas absorption and dispersion information over a 900-m turbulent air path are acquired. For the rovibrational resonances of CO2 and H2O in 6250-6660 cm-1, the achieved residual of the amplitude spectrum is no more than 0.01, and the average residual of the phase spectrum is 0.2 mrad, corresponding to about 0.2 as of relative timing noise or a refraction-index change of about 6 x 10-14 over the target path. The precision of concentration retrieval is about 3 ppm for CO2 in 30 s. A simulated gas -leakage measurement validates the dynamic monitoring capability of this system. This highly effective noise-compensation method provides the possibility of deploying the portable configuration and holds the potential to propel environmental protection and atmospheric science.
Open-path Dual-comb Spectroscopy for Multispecies Trace Gas Detection in the 4.5 μm to 5 μm Spectral Region

Abstract:Open-path dual-comb spectroscopy provides multi-species atmospheric gas concentration measurements with high precision. Here, we extend open-path dual comb spectroscopy to the mid-infrared 5 {\mu}m atmospheric window, enabling atmospheric concentration retrievals of the primary greenhouse gases, N$_2$O, CO$_2$, and H$_2$O as well as the criterion air pollutants O$_3$ and CO across 600 m and 2 km round-trip paths. We demonstrate measurements over a five-day period at two-minute temporal resolution with 80% uptime. The achieved precision is sufficient to resolve the atmospheric concentration variations of the multiple gas species; retrieved dry mixing ratios of CO and N$_2$O are in good agreement with a co-located point sensor. In addition, the retrieved ratio of excess CO vs CO$_2$ agrees with similar urban studies but disagrees with the US National Emission Inventory by a factor of 3. Our retrieved ratio of excess N$_2$O vs CO$_2$ exhibits a plume-dependent value, indicating the variability of sources of the greenhouse gas N$_2$O.

Abstract:Satellite-based greenhouse gases (GHG) sensing technologies play a critical role in the study of global carbon emissions and climate change. However, none of the existing satellite-based GHG sensing technologies can achieve the measurement of broad bandwidth, high temporal-spatial resolution, and high sensitivity at the same time. Recently, dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) has been proposed as a superior candidate technology for GHG sensing because it can measure broadband spectra with high temporal-spatial resolution and high sensitivity. The main barrier to DCS's display on satellites is its short measurement distance in open air achieved thus far. Prior research has not been able to implement DCS over 20 km of open-air path. Here, by developing a bistatic setup using time-frequency dissemination and high-power optical frequency combs, we have implemented DCS over a 113 km turbulent horizontal open-air path. Our experiment successfully measured GHG with 7 nm spectral bandwidth and a 10 kHz frequency and achieved a CO2 sensing precision of <2 ppm in 5 minutes and <0.6 ppm in 36 minutes. Dual-comb Spectroscopy for On-Site Spectroscopic Detection

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) is a novel high-performance spectral measurement technology. However, conventional DCS systems often rely on optical frequency comb seed sources, which have limited output power and are not capable of withstanding the substantial losses encountered during on-site detection. Additionally, their spectral range is often narrow and may not be suitable for the target gases. In this work, we demonstrate a high-power, wide-spectral-range dual-comb spectroscopy measurement system for onsite spectral detection. The system comprises two optical frequency combs with close repetition rates, utilizing erbium-doped fiber amplifiers and dispersion compensating fibers for power amplification and broadening of the spectrum. We successfully detect absorption spectra of multiple gases, demonstrating good agreement with the simulated spectrum from the HITRAN standard database. The spectral resolution can reach sub-picometer-level (similar to 0.45 pm). This work shows the potential of dual-comb spectroscopy technology transitioning from laboratory research to industrial on-site applications.

Abstract:A mid-Infrared frequency comb is produced via an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by an amplified 100 MHz Yb:fiber mode-locked laser. We use this source to make measurements of the concentration of the atmospherically-relevant species of CH4 and H2O over a bandwidth of 100 nm centered at 3.25 um. Multiple absorption lines for each species are detected with millisecond acquisition time using a virtually-imaged phased array (VIPA) spectrometer. The measured wavelength-dependent absorption profile is compared to and fitted by a model, yielding quantitative values of the atmospheric concentration of both CH4 and H2O in a controlled indoor environment, as well as over a 26 m open air outdoor path.

Abstract:With the conjunction of tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy technology (TDLAS) and the open long optical path technology, the system designing scheme of CO2 on-line monitoring based on near infrared tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy technology was discussed in detail, and the instrument for large-range measurement was set up. By choosing the infrared absorption line of CO2 at 1.57 microm whose line strength is strong and suitable for measurement, the ambient atmospheric CO2 was measured continuously with a 30 s temporal resolution at an suburb site in the autumn of 2007. The diurnal atmospheric variations of CO2 and continuous monitoring results were presented. The results show that the variation in CO2 concentration has an obvious diurnal periodicity in suburb where the air is free of interference and contamination. The general characteristic of diurnal variation is that the concentration is low in the daytime and high at night, so it matches the photosynthesis trend. The instrument can detect gas concentration online with high resolution, high sensitivity, high precision, short response time and many other advantages, the monitoring requires no gas sampling, the calibration is easy, and the detection limit is about 4.2 x 10(-7). It has been proved that the system and measurement project are feasible, so it is an effective method for gas flux continuous online monitoring of large range in ecosystem based on TDLAS technology.
Enhancing Open-Space Gas Detection Limit: A Novel Environmentally Adaptive Infrared Temperature Prediction Method for Uncooled Spectroscopy

Abstract:Gas cloud imaging with uncooled infrared spectroscopy is influenced by ambient temperature, complicating the quantitative detection of gas concentrations in open environments. To solve the aforementioned challenges, the paper analyzes the main factors influencing detection errors in uncooled infrared spectroscopy gas cloud imaging and proposes a temperature correction method to address them. Firstly, to mitigate the environmental effects on the radiative temperature output of uncooled infrared detectors, a snapshot-based, multi-band infrared temperature compensation algorithm incorporating environmental awareness was developed. This algorithm enables precise infrared radiation prediction across a wide operating temperature range. Validation tests conducted over the full temperature range of 0 °C to 80 °C demonstrated that the prediction error was maintained within ±0.96 °C. Subsequently, temperature compensation techniques were integrated, resulting in the development of a comprehensive uncooled infrared spectroscopy gas cloud imaging detection method. Ultimately, the detection limits for SF6, ethylene, cyclohexane, and ammonia were enhanced by 50%, 33%, 25%, and 67%, respectively.

Abstract:Greenhouse gases have a significant impact on general global climate change. A self-calibrated multiharmonic measurement system based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) with wavelength modulation spectroscopy, using the vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser, is developed and applied to measure the CO2 and H2O concentrations in the urban areas. The precision of the developed system is evaluated using the Allan variance method, and it is found that the multiharmonic can enhance the precision of the system and the first-to-third harmonics are sufficient to achieve the lowest Allan deviation. To validate its accuracy, comparison experiments with the commercial nondispersive infrared (NDIR) instrument (Li-Cor 840A) are performed and the results demonstrate the high accuracy of the TDLAS system and its consistency with the NDIR instrument. Measurements were carried out in autumn and winter of 2017 in the city center of Munich. The results indicate that the in situ measurement of the CO2 concentration in the downtown area correlates with both natural and anthropogenic activities. Due to its high precision and accuracy, the self-calibrated multiharmonic measurement system has a great potential to further study the emission and distribution of CO2 in the urban areas.

Abstract:The broadband terahertz wave, with its correspondence to the fingerprint spectra of gas molecules and relatively high transmittance through smoke, aerosol, and combustion environments, bears great potential for gas detection and combustion diagnostics. While access to the rotational spectral fingerprints in the terahertz region provides opportunities for species-selective diagnostics with minimized background and cross interference, few studies have been devoted to direct, quantitative, simultaneous analysis of multiple components exploiting the terahertz region. In this work, we achieve quantitative measurements of CO, NH3 and H2O gas concentrations at standard temperature and pressure over a bandwidth of 1 THz, using direct absorption spectrum from femtosecond-laser-based terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. Spectral fitting of the fully resolved rotational lines yields good precision and accuracy with validation against calibrated mixtures. The estimated detection limts of the multi-speices sensing system are 250 ppm·m, 7 ppm·m and 4 ppm·m for CO, NH3 and H2O, respectively. The demonstration of quantitative, multi-species gas sensing indicates the feasibility and practical value of using broadband terahertz absorption spectroscopy for real-time, quantitative analysis and speciation of multicomponent gas in complicated practical environments such as combustion and multi-phase flows.

Improving Resolution of Dual-Comb Gas Detection Using Periodic Spectrum Alignment Method.

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy has been an infusive spectroscopic tool for gas detection due to its high resolution, high sensitivity, and fast acquisition speed over a broad spectral range without any mechanical scanning components. However, the complexity and cost of high-performance dual-comb spectroscopy are still high for field-deployed applications. To solve this problem, we propose a simple frequency domain post-processing method by extracting the accurate position of a specific absorption line frame by frame. After aligning real-time spectra and averaging for one second, the absorbance spectrum of H13C14N gas in the near-infrared is obtained over 1.1 THz spectral range. By using this method, the standard deviation of residual error is only ~0.002, showing great agreement with the conventional correction method. In addition, the spectral resolution is improved from 13.4 GHz to 4.3 GHz compared to direct spectrum averaging. Our method does not require a specially designed common-mode suppression comb, rigorous frequency control system, or complicated computational algorithm, providing a cost-effective scheme for field-deployed Doppler-limited spectroscopy applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate coherent dual frequency-comb spectroscopy for detecting variations in greenhouse gases. High signal-to-noise spectra are acquired spanning 5990 to 6260 cm^-1 (1600 to 1670 nm) covering ~700 absorption features from CO2, CH4, H2O, HDO, and 13CO2, across a 2-km open-air path. The transmission of each frequency comb tooth is resolved, leading to spectra with <1 kHz frequency accuracy, no instrument lineshape, and a 0.0033-cm^-1 point spacing. The fitted path-averaged concentrations and temperature yield dry-air mole fractions. These are compared with a point sensor under well-mixed conditions to evaluate current absorption models for real atmospheres. In heterogeneous conditions, time-resolved data demonstrate tracking of strong variations in mole fractions. A precision of <1 ppm for CO2 and <3 ppb for CH4 is achieved in 5 minutes in this initial demonstration. Future portable systems could support regional emissions monitoring and validation of the spectral databases critical to global satellite-based trace gas monitoring.

Abstract:We present a novel approach based on dual-sideband heterodyne phase-sensitive detection of dispersion spectroscopy to realize simultaneous measurement of the gas absorption signal and corresponding path length. The details of heterodyne phase-sensitive detection of dispersion spectroscopy are derived. A standard Mach-Zehnder intensity modulator (MZM) is adopted to generate a spectrum of a carrier and two sidebands. Phase shift of the beatnote signal generated by the two sidebands is detected to retrieve the path length as well as the gas absorption signal. The measurement range of the path length can be adapted by changing the modulation frequency. Proof-of-principle experiments are conducted with methane (CH4) as the absorber which is filled into a gas cell with a variable path length. We also utilize this approach to evaluate the path length of a White cell and meanwhile calibrate the experimental system with different concentrations of methane. The proposed method has a great potential for detecting the path length and gas absorption in multipass cells and the open path environment.
Open-Path Detection of Organic Vapors via Quantum Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract:In recent years, quantum Fourier transform infrared (QFTIR) spectroscopy emerged as an alternative to conventional spectroscopy in the mid-infrared region of the spectrum. By harnessing induced coherence and spectral entanglement, QFTIR offers promising potential for the practical detection of organic gasses. However, little research was conducted to bring QFTIR spectrometers closer to domestic or in-field usage. In this work, we present the first use of a QFTIR spectrometer for open-path detection of multiple interfering organic gases in ambient air. The accurate identification of mixtures of acetone, methanol, and ethanol vapors is demonstrated with a QFTIR spectrometer. We achieved this breakthrough by building a nonlinear Michelson interferometer with 1.7m-long arms to increase the absorption length, coupled with analysis techniques from differential absorption spectroscopy. The evolution of different gasses' concentrations in ambient air was measured through time. These results constitute the first use-case of a QFTIR spectrometer as a detector of organic gasses, and thus represent an important milestone towards the development of such detectors in practical situations.

Abstract:In this article, a compact dual-laser sensor based on an off-axis integrated-cavity output spectroscopy and time-division multiplexing method is reported. A complete dual-channel optical structure is developed and integrated on an optical cavity, which allows two distributed feedback (DFB) lasers operating at wavelengths of 1603 nm and 1651 nm to measure the concentration of CO2 and CH4, simultaneously. Performances of the dual-laser sensor are experimentally evaluated by using standard air (with a mixture of CO2 and CH4). The limit of detection (LoD) is 0.271 ppm and 1.743 ppb at a 20 s for CO2 and CH4, respectively, and the noise equivalent absorption sensitivities are 2.68 × 10−10 cm−1 Hz−1/2 and 3.88 × 10−10 cm−1 Hz−1/2, respectively. Together with a commercial instrument, the dual-laser sensor is used to measure CO2 and CH4 concentration over 120 h and verify the regular operation of the sensor for the detection of ambient air. Furthermore, a first-order exponential moving average algorithm is implemented as an effective digital filtering method to estimate the gas concentration.
