Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) provides broadband, high-resolution, high-sensitivity amplitude and phase spectra within a short measurement time, thus holding promises for atmospheric spectroscopy. However, previous research has been limited to measuring over open-air paths of about 20 km. Here, by developing a bistatic set-up using time–frequency dissemination and high-power optical frequency combs, we implement DCS over a 113 km turbulent horizontal open-air path. We successfully measure the absorbance spectra of CO 2 and H 2 O with a 7 nm spectral bandwidth and a 10 kHz frequency accuracy, and achieve a sensing precision of <2 ppm in 5 min and <0.6 ppm in 36 min for CO 2 . We anticipate our system to find immediate applications in the monitoring of urban greenhouse gas and gaseous pollutants emission. Our technology may also be extended to satellite-based DCS for greenhouse gas monitoring and calibration measurements.

Abstract:Open-path dual-comb spectroscopy has emerged as a promising technique for regional multigas mon-itoring with its conspicuous advantages of broadband spectral coverage, high spectral resolution, and rapid update rate. However, it is challenging to realize its full potential due to the undesirable mutual coherence of the dual-comb source and turbulence in the air path, which hinder it from field-deployed open-path applications. Here, phase-sensitive open-path dual-comb spectroscopy based on free-running combs is reported, in which dual-purpose compensation is proposed to provide immunity against both the time jitter of comb sources and turbulent noise. Broadband and high-fidelity atmospheric amplitude and phase spectra containing gas absorption and dispersion information over a 900-m turbulent air path are acquired. For the rovibrational resonances of CO2 and H2O in 6250-6660 cm-1, the achieved residual of the amplitude spectrum is no more than 0.01, and the average residual of the phase spectrum is 0.2 mrad, corresponding to about 0.2 as of relative timing noise or a refraction-index change of about 6 x 10-14 over the target path. The precision of concentration retrieval is about 3 ppm for CO2 in 30 s. A simulated gas -leakage measurement validates the dynamic monitoring capability of this system. This highly effective noise-compensation method provides the possibility of deploying the portable configuration and holds the potential to propel environmental protection and atmospheric science.

Abstract:Locating gas concentration changes in widespread locations can be conducive to environmental atmospheric detection, gas emissions monitoring, production process control, etc. A time domain multiplexed dual-comb system for segment-resolved gas concentration measurement is reported in this work. Both absorption spectra and path lengths for multiple path-segments in a target path can be derived from the time domain separated interferograms and then the equivalent gas concentrations in each segment can be retrieved separately. A benchtop experiment aiming at a target path with three path-segments of different gases has been demonstrated. The relative deviation of gas concentration retrieval is 1.08% in 1 s. Besides, additional numerical simulations prove that the crosstalk between the interference signals affects the spectrum analysis by no more than 0.1% for a kilometer-long atmospheric absorption detection. Therefore, achieving a gridded measurement of regional gas concentration in the open air can be foreseen using this method.
Dual-comb Spectroscopy for On-Site Spectroscopic Detection

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) is a novel high-performance spectral measurement technology. However, conventional DCS systems often rely on optical frequency comb seed sources, which have limited output power and are not capable of withstanding the substantial losses encountered during on-site detection. Additionally, their spectral range is often narrow and may not be suitable for the target gases. In this work, we demonstrate a high-power, wide-spectral-range dual-comb spectroscopy measurement system for onsite spectral detection. The system comprises two optical frequency combs with close repetition rates, utilizing erbium-doped fiber amplifiers and dispersion compensating fibers for power amplification and broadening of the spectrum. We successfully detect absorption spectra of multiple gases, demonstrating good agreement with the simulated spectrum from the HITRAN standard database. The spectral resolution can reach sub-picometer-level (similar to 0.45 pm). This work shows the potential of dual-comb spectroscopy technology transitioning from laboratory research to industrial on-site applications.
Improving Resolution of Dual-Comb Gas Detection Using Periodic Spectrum Alignment Method.

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy has been an infusive spectroscopic tool for gas detection due to its high resolution, high sensitivity, and fast acquisition speed over a broad spectral range without any mechanical scanning components. However, the complexity and cost of high-performance dual-comb spectroscopy are still high for field-deployed applications. To solve this problem, we propose a simple frequency domain post-processing method by extracting the accurate position of a specific absorption line frame by frame. After aligning real-time spectra and averaging for one second, the absorbance spectrum of H13C14N gas in the near-infrared is obtained over 1.1 THz spectral range. By using this method, the standard deviation of residual error is only ~0.002, showing great agreement with the conventional correction method. In addition, the spectral resolution is improved from 13.4 GHz to 4.3 GHz compared to direct spectrum averaging. Our method does not require a specially designed common-mode suppression comb, rigorous frequency control system, or complicated computational algorithm, providing a cost-effective scheme for field-deployed Doppler-limited spectroscopy applications.

Abstract:Abstract Dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) has revolutionized optical spectroscopy by providing broadband spectral measurements with unprecedented resolution and fast response. Photothermal spectroscopy (PTS) with a pump-probe configuration offers a highly sensitive gas sensing method, which is normally performed using a single-wavelength pump laser. The merging of PTS with DCS may enable a spectroscopic method by taking advantage of both technologies, which has never been studied yet. Here, we report dual-comb photothermal spectroscopy (DC-PTS) by passing dual combs and a probe laser through a gas-filled anti-resonant hollow-core fiber, where the generated multi-heterodyne modulation of the refractive index is sensitively detected by an in-line interferometer. As an example, we have measured photothermal spectra of acetylene over 1 THz, showing a good agreement with the spectral database. Our proposed DC-PTS provides opportunities for broadband gas sensing with super-fine resolution and high sensitivity, as well as with a small sample volume and compact configuration.

Abstract:We present a novel approach based on dual-sideband heterodyne phase-sensitive detection of dispersion spectroscopy to realize simultaneous measurement of the gas absorption signal and corresponding path length. The details of heterodyne phase-sensitive detection of dispersion spectroscopy are derived. A standard Mach-Zehnder intensity modulator (MZM) is adopted to generate a spectrum of a carrier and two sidebands. Phase shift of the beatnote signal generated by the two sidebands is detected to retrieve the path length as well as the gas absorption signal. The measurement range of the path length can be adapted by changing the modulation frequency. Proof-of-principle experiments are conducted with methane (CH4) as the absorber which is filled into a gas cell with a variable path length. We also utilize this approach to evaluate the path length of a White cell and meanwhile calibrate the experimental system with different concentrations of methane. The proposed method has a great potential for detecting the path length and gas absorption in multipass cells and the open path environment.

Abstract:Dual-comb system with simplified integration acts a crucial role in the next stage of field-deployable application. Here we demonstrate a home-made dual-comb spectrometer that meets this requirement based on optically stabilized erbium-fiber frequency combs. The simplified integration and operability are highlighted by the embedded large motion-span automatic optical delay line that resulted in 1.7 MHz of continuous repetition rate tuning range and avoid multiple fiber cutbacks. This relaxes the second similar frequency comb duplication, therefore simplifies dual-comb system integration. The mutual coherence was enhanced by optical phase lock to a common narrow-linewidth reference laser via pump current modulation. We acquired the absorption feature of acetylene 12C2H2 molecule in 1.5 μm region with an apodized instrument linewidth of 0.076 cm-1. The mean signal-to-noise ratio within a spectral bandwidth of 90 cm-1 achieved 280, and the corresponding noise equivalent absorption coefficient was 3.7 × 10-6 cm-1·Hz-1/2 for an absorption path of 7.5 cm and a pressure of 100 Torr. The accuracy of the retrieved spectrum was further confirmed by comparing with HITRAN database.

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) is an emerging and promising spectrometric technique with high resolution, high sensitivity, broad spectral range, and fast acquisition speed. For the recovery of the information encoded on comb modes without resolution loss, two continuous wave lasers are commonly utilized as optical intermedia to track the real-time jitter of dual-comb interferograms. This paper presents a simplified error correction method based on single optical intermedium for quasi-free-running fiber DCS. This method combines the strengths of conventional optical referencing and self-referencing error correction. We acquired whole P branch (HCN)-C-13-N-14 transmittance spectra in the near infrared as a demonstration. In contrast to that of conventional dual intermedium error correction, the standard deviation of our method was merely 0.01 over the 4 THz spectral range. Our method provides a balanced and practical postprocessing routine for high-performance mode-resolved DCS applications. Abstract:Resolution and bandwidth are critical for cavity-enhanced dual-comb spectroscopy (CE-DCS). Here, we pioneer an adaptive approach in CE-DCS to improve the broadband as well as the resolution. Postcorrections to dual-comb interferograms adaptively compensate the relative phase jitters of the optical frequency combs and result in both a mode-resolved spectral resolution and a signal-to-noise ratio of 440:1 in 1 s. Meanwhile, an adaptive combcavity locking scheme exploits more than 90% of the comb modes, covering 340 cm(-1) (10 THz) at 6450 cm(-1). For a single dual-comb interferogram, more than 40,000 comb teeth spaced by 250 MHz are measured in less than 7.5 ms, contributing to a noise equivalent absorption per spectral element of 2 x 10(-10) cm(-1).Hz(-1/2). This adaptive cavity-enhanced dual-comb spectroscopy technique provides an attractive spectroscopic tool that may be utilized in trace-gas sensing, breath and cancer analysis, and engine combustion diagnosis. Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy is becoming a highlighted topic in broadband spectrum measurement techniques because of two outstanding advantages. One is its highly stable output frequency, which leads to an appealing resolution, and the other is the omitting of moving parts, which helps achieve extreme fast sampling rate. Utilizing the traditional radio frequency linked combs, however, obstructs the dual-comb spectroscopy reaching satisfied performance because the phase noise of the radio frequency standard causes the dual-comb mutual coherence to severely degrade. Specifically, traditional frequency comb stabilizes the carrier envelope offset at a radio frequency by a self-reference system, and the order number of each output comb tooth is over a hundred thousand. Thus, the phase noise of the radio frequency reference is significantly multiplied in output optical frequency by the same order of magnitude as the tooth order number. In this paper, we demonstrate an optical frequency linked dual-comb spectrometer where the two combs are locked to a common narrow linewidth laser. In this configuration, the two combs are synchronized at an identical optical frequency, which means that the carrier envelope offset of the two combs are changed to an optical frequency and the order number of the output comb teeth are reduced by two orders of magnitude. Therefore, not only the complex and costly self-reference system can be removed but also the phase noise of the optical frequency of each comb tooth is effectively reduced, which leads to lower mutual frequency jitters and better mutual coherence. To prove the performance, we measure the v(1) + v(3) P branch of (C2H2)-C-13 molecular and the results accord well with the reported line positions and reveals a spectral resolution of 0.086 cm(-1). The average signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 200 : 1 (62.5 ms, 100 times on average) and the noise equivalent coefficient is 6.0 x 10 (6) cm (1).Hz (1/2) . This work provides a solution for pragmatic dual-comb spectroscopy with high resolution and low-cost configuration.

Abstract:We demonstrate balanced-detection dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) using two free-running mechanical sharing dual-comb fiber lasers assisted by an all-computational digital phase correction algorithm. The mutual coherence between the combs allows us perform mode-resolved spectroscopy of gaseous hydrogen cyanide by digitally compensating residual timing and offset frequency fluctuations of the dual-comb signal. Setting the repetition rate difference between the combs to 500 Hz (1.5 kHz) yields more than 2000 resolved radio frequency comb lines after phase correction in a 3-dB bandwidth centered at 1560 nm of wavelength. Through coadding the corrected interferograms (IGMs), we obtain a single time-domain trace with a SNR of 6378 (13960) and 12.64 (13.77) bits of dynamic range in 1 second of averaging. The spectral SNR of the coadded trace reaches 529 (585), corresponding to a figure of merit of SNR of 1.3$\times$10$^6$ (1.4$\times$10$^6$). The measured absorption spectrum of hydrogen cyanide agrees well with the HITRAN database.

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) has been an emerging spectrometric technique with high resolution, high sensitivity, broad spectral range and fast acquisition speed. However, it is hard to achieve high long-term stability and high mutual coherence with low system complexity, which hinders the widespread usage in field-deployed applications. In this paper, we demonstrate a simplified free-running dual-comb spectrometer with long-term stability and mode-resolved resolution. Two free-running mode-locked fiber lasers are environment-shared to achieve effective common-mode noise suppression, which enables long-term aliasing-free dual-comb interferograms (IGMs). Post-proposing error correction algorithm is then utilized to recover full mutual coherence and realize coherent averaging. As a result, the transmittance spectra of H13CN and C2H2 gases with high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be measured. To the best knowledge of us, this is the first demonstration of coherent-averaged DCS based on environment-shared free-running fiber lasers, which is promising for promoting the dual-comb spectrometer out of the laboratory and realizing field-deployed applications.

Abstract:Satellite-based greenhouse gases (GHG) sensing technologies play a critical role in the study of global carbon emissions and climate change. However, none of the existing satellite-based GHG sensing technologies can achieve the measurement of broad bandwidth, high temporal-spatial resolution, and high sensitivity at the same time. Recently, dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) has been proposed as a superior candidate technology for GHG sensing because it can measure broadband spectra with high temporal-spatial resolution and high sensitivity. The main barrier to DCS's display on satellites is its short measurement distance in open air achieved thus far. Prior research has not been able to implement DCS over 20 km of open-air path. Here, by developing a bistatic setup using time-frequency dissemination and high-power optical frequency combs, we have implemented DCS over a 113 km turbulent horizontal open-air path. Our experiment successfully measured GHG with 7 nm spectral bandwidth and a 10 kHz frequency and achieved a CO2 sensing precision of <2 ppm in 5 minutes and <0.6 ppm in 36 minutes. Our results represent a significant step towards advancing the implementation of DCS as a satellite-based technology and improving technologies for GHG monitoring

Abstract:Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) using two optical combs is a new-born technique, offering appealing features, including broad optical bandwidths, high resolutions, fast acquisition speeds, and wavelength-independent photoacoustic detection, for chemical sensing. However, its further application to, e.g., trace detection, is jeopardized due to the fundamentally and technically limited sensitivity and specificity. Here, we take a different route to comb-enabled PAS with acoustically enhanced sensitivity and nonlinear spectral hole-burning defined resolution. We demonstrate dual-comb quartz-enhanced PAS with two near-infrared electro-optic combs and a quartz tuning fork. Comb-line-resolved multiplexed spectra are acquired for acetylene with a single-pass detection limit at the parts-per-billion level. The technique is further extended to the mid-infrared (for methane), enabling improved sensitivity. More importantly, we measure nonlinear dual-comb photoacoustic spectra for the 12 C 2 H 2 ν 1 + ν 3 band P(17) transition with sub-Doppler pressure-broadening dominated homogeneous linewidths (e.g., 45.8 MHz), hence opening up new opportunities for Doppler-free photoacoustic gas sensing.

Abstract:From the perspective of error compensation in the sampling process, a digital calibration algorithm was studied for the processing of spectral data in dual-comb spectroscopy. In this algorithm, dynamic adaptation to phase fluctuations maintained constant measurement results of spectral line positions and intensities. A mode-resolved broadband absorption spectrum was obtained over the full-spectral range of the comb with a Hertz linewidth of radio frequency comb mode. The measured spectrum spanned over 10 THz, which covered the multiplexed absorption regions of mixed gases, such as CO2 and N2O. The calibrated interferograms were also capable of direct coherent averaging in the time domain. The transmittance obtained deviated from the theoretical calculation by no more than 2% in the whole spectral span.
