Abstract:Precision spectrum measurement is one of the main applications of optical frequency combs. In this paper, we demonstrate a multi-branch optical frequency comb based on an erbium-doped-fiber femtosecond laser with a polarization-maintaining '9' cavity. The comb includes five output ports with the target wavelengths including 1083 nm, 1380 nm, 1637 nm, 1064 nm and 1750 nm. The in-loop stabilities of the repetition rate and carrier-envelope-offset frequency are 2.9x10(-13) and 1.7x10(-18 )at 1 second integration time respectively, which meets the sub-kilo hertz cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) measurements requirements.

Abstract:Optical frequency comb with evenly spaced lines over a broad bandwidth has revolutionized the fields of optical metro-logy and spectroscopy. Here, we propose a fast interleaved dual-comb spectroscopy with sub-femtometer-resolution and absolute frequency, in which two electro-optic frequency combs are swept. Electrically-modulated stabilized laser en-ables ultrahigh resolution of 0.16 fm (or 20 kHz in optical frequency) and single-shot measurement in 90 ms. Total 20 mil-lion points are recorded spanning 3.2 nm (or 400 GHz) bandwidth, corresponding to a spectral sampling rate of 2.5 x 108 points/s under Nyquist-limitation. Besides, considering the trade-off between the measurement time and spectral resolu-tion, a fast single-shot measurement is also realized in 1.6 ms with 8 fm (or 1 MHz) resolution. We demonstrate the 25 -averaged result with 30.6 dB spectral measurement signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by reducing the filter bandwidth in de-modulation. The results show great prospect for precise measurement with flexibly fast refresh time, high spectral resolu-tion, and high SNR.

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy is becoming a highlighted topic in broadband spectrum measurement techniques because of two outstanding advantages. One is its highly stable output frequency, which leads to an appealing resolution, and the other is the omitting of moving parts, which helps achieve extreme fast sampling rate. Utilizing the traditional radio frequency linked combs, however, obstructs the dual-comb spectroscopy reaching satisfied performance because the phase noise of the radio frequency standard causes the dual-comb mutual coherence to severely degrade. Specifically, traditional frequency comb stabilizes the carrier envelope offset at a radio frequency by a self-reference system, and the order number of each output comb tooth is over a hundred thousand. Thus, the phase noise of the radio frequency reference is significantly multiplied in output optical frequency by the same order of magnitude as the tooth order number. In this paper, we demonstrate an optical frequency linked dual-comb spectrometer where the two combs are locked to a common narrow linewidth laser. In this configuration, the two combs are synchronized at an identical optical frequency, which means that the carrier envelope offset of the two combs are changed to an optical frequency and the order number of the output comb teeth are reduced by two orders of magnitude. Therefore, not only the complex and costly self-reference system can be removed but also the phase noise of the optical frequency of each comb tooth is effectively reduced, which leads to lower mutual frequency jitters and better mutual coherence. To prove the performance, we measure the v(1) + v(3) P branch of (C2H2)-C-13 molecular and the results accord well with the reported line positions and reveals a spectral resolution of 0.086 cm(-1). The average signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 200 : 1 (62.5 ms, 100 times on average) and the noise equivalent coefficient is 6.0 x 10 (6) cm (1).Hz (1/2) . This work provides a solution for pragmatic dual-comb spectroscopy with high resolution and low-cost configuration.

Abstract:The remarkable frequency stability of resonant systems in the optical domain (optical cavities and atomic transitions) can be harnessed at frequency scales accessible by electronics using optical frequency division. This capability is revolutionizing technologies spanning time keeping to high-performance electrical signal sources. A version of the technique called 2-point optical frequency division (2P-OFD) is proving advantageous for application to high-performance signal sources. In 2P-OFD, an optical cavity anchors two spectral endpoints defined by lines of a frequency comb. The comb need not be self-referenced, which greatly simplifies the system architecture and reduces power requirements. Here, a 2P-OFD microwave signal source is demonstrated with record-low phase noise using a microcomb. Key to this advance is a spectral endpoint defined by a frequency agile single-mode dispersive wave that is emitted by the microcomb soliton. Moreover, the system frequency reference is a compact all-solid-state optical cavity with a record Q-factor. The results advance integrable microcomb-based signal sources into the performance realm of much larger microwave sources.

Abstract:The femtosecond optical frequency comb based on mode-locked laser is a laser source which can emit trains of pulses with stable repetition rate,and the spectrum of the pulses consists of a comb of optical frequencies with equal spacing.Femtosecond optical frequency combs can link the microwave frequency to the optical frequency,achieving the direct measurement of absolute optical frequency.Besides,as special lasers different from traditional stabilized continuous wave lasers,femtosecond optical frequency combs present superiorities in the optical precision measurement areas such as laser frequency rulers,absolute distance measurements and precision spectroscopy measurements.The recent progress,key techniques and potential directions of femtosecond optical frequency combs for precision measurement applications are reviewed.Femtosecond optical frequency combs will play an important role in the field of optical precision measurements in future.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs provide a powerful tool for precise measurement of the optical frequency, holding significant importance in fields such as spectroscopy, optical communication and optical clock. The frequency stability of the comb line determines the precision of the frequency measurement, but the delicate interplay between high precision, low power consumption and integration still needs to be optimized. To this aim, here we demonstrate a frequency measurement scheme based on a fully stabilized electro-optic comb, in which the pump laser frequency and repetition rate are independently locked to the atomic transition and microwave signal. The measurement precision of the demonstrated wavemeter can reach sub-kHz-level, and the parallel measurement of multiple wavelengths can be performed. Therefore, by combining the technical scheme reported here with advanced integrated functional devices, our system is expected to provide a feasible solution for chip-scale frequency precision measurement and reference. Optical frequency combs enable precise measurement of optical frequencies, but integrated setups require a delicate balance between high precision and low power consumption. The authors demonstrate a sub-kHz-frequency measurement scheme based on a fully stabilized electro-optic comb that enables the parallel measurement of multiple wavelengths.

Abstract:Optical fiber is the cornerstone of the contemporary inter-network and has produced profound and far-reaching effect on modern information society ever since it was invented. The detection of key parameters of optical fiber such as length, refractive index, and chromatic dispersion is of great significance to ensure the quality and security of communication network. Here, a synchronous, fast, and high-precision measurement method for the length and dispersion of optical fibers is proposed, where the time-of-flight measurement and spectral interference are organically combined using an optical frequency comb (OFC) with the assistance of a modulated narrow linewidth single-frequency laser. The length and the dispersion coefficient distribution can be preciously obtained directly and simultaneously by measuring only single-frame interference spectrum. The excellent time–frequency characteristics of the OFC and our unique algorithm enable the realization of extremely high measurement accuracy and resolution: a resolution of @ 500 m and an accuracy of 1.5 cm ( relatively) @ 11 000 m, as well as a dispersion measurement accuracy of 0.5%. The method boasts rapid measurement, ample bandwidth, elimination of scanning, and exceptional precision, making it highly applicable in both optical communication and optical fiber sensing systems.

Arbitrary Optical Frequency Synthesis Traced to an Optical Frequency Comb

Abstract:An arbitrary optical frequency synthesizer with a broad tuning range and high frequency accuracy is presented. The system includes an external cavity diode laser (ECDL) as the output laser, an Erbium-doped optical frequency comb being a frequency reference, and a control module. The optical frequency from the synthesizer can be continuously tuned by the large-scale trans-tooth switch and the fine intra-tooth adjustment. Robust feedback control by regulating the current and PZT voltage enables the ECDL to phase-lock to the Erbium-doped optical frequency comb, therefore to keep stable frequency output. In the meanwhile, the absolute frequency of the synthesizer is determined by the repetition rate, the offset frequency and the beat frequency. All the phase lock loops in the system are traced back to a Rubidium clock. A powerful and friendly software is developed to make the operation convenient by integrating the functions of frequency setting, tuning, tracing, locking and measuring into a LabVIEW interface. The output frequency tuning span and the uncertainty of the system are evaluated as >6 THz and <3 kHz, respectively. The arbitrary optical frequency synthesizer will be a versatile tool in diverse applications, such as synthetic wavelength based absolute distance measurement and frequency-stabilized Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs generated by multiple four-wave mixing in short and highly nonlinear optical fibers are proposed for use as high precision frequency markers, calibration of astrophysical spectrometers, broadband spectroscopy and metrology. Implementations can involve two optical frequency standards as input lasers, or one standard and a second laser phase-locked to it using a stable microwave reference oscillator. Energy and momentum conservation required by the parametric generation assures phase coherence among comb frequencies, while fibers with short lengths can avoid linewidth broadening and stimulated Brillouin scattering. In contrast to combs from mode-locked lasers or microcavities, the absence of a resonator allows large tuning of the frequency spacing from tens of gigahertz to beyond teraHertz.

Abstract:Optical clocks with an unprecedented accuracy of 10 − 18 promise innovations in precision spectroscopy and measurement. To harness the full power of optical clocks, we need optical frequency synthesizers (OFSs) to accurately convert the stabilities and accuracies of optical clocks to other desired frequencies. This work demonstrates such an OFS referenced to an ytterbium optical clock. The OFS is based on an optical frequency comb phase-locked to a commercial rubidium microwave clock; in this way most combs can operate robustly. Despite comb frequency instability at 10 − 11 , the synthesis noise and uncertainty reach 6 × 10 − 18 (1 s) and 5 × 10 − 21 , respectively, facilitating frequency synthesis of the best optical clocks. In the OFS, the coherence of the OFS internal oscillator at 1064 nm is accurately transferred to a 578 nm laser for resolving the hertz-level-linewidth ytterbium clock transition (unaffected by megahertz-linewidth comb lines) and faithfully referencing the OFS to an ytterbium optical clock.

Abstract:We demonstrate a multi-branch all polarization-maintaining Er:fiber frequency comb with five application ports for precise measurement of atomic/molecular transition frequencies in the near-infrared region. A fully stabilized Er:fiber frequency comb with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror is achieved. The in-loop relative instability of stabilized carrier-envelope-offset frequency is 5.6 × 10−18 at 1 s integration time, while that of the repetition rate is well below 1.8 × 10−12 limited by the measurement noise floor of the commercial frequency counter. Five application ports are individually optimized for applications with different wavelengths (1064 nm, 1083 nm, 1380 nm, 1637 nm and 1750 nm). The beat note between the optical frequency comb and continuous laser exhibits the signal-to-noise ratio of at least 30 dB at a resolution bandwidth of 100 kHz. The in-loop frequency instability of the comb is evaluated to be good enough for measurement of rotation-resolved transitions of molecules below 1 kHz resolution.

Abstract:Over the past seventeen years,notable advances have occurred in a diverse range of scientific areas following the development of femtosecond optical frequency combs.Frequency comb first establishes a direct link between microwave and optical frequencies,thus enabling the breakthrough of time-and frequency-domain research.Frequency stabilization of comb has led to a revolution in frequency metrology and precision measurement.In addition,well-defined temporal coherence across the optical spectrum makes it a unique tool for molecular spectroscopic applications,simultaneously providing high speed measurement,high spectral resolution and broad spectral coverage.This tutorial review provides an introduction to femtosecond optical frequency combs,covering their principles of operation and applications and advance in frequency metrology,absolute distance measurement,precision absorption spectroscopy,high speed nonlinear spectroscopy and microscopy and high precision time and frequency transfer.In this way it aims to demonstrate their potential as a spectroscopic tool that could play a very significant role in future advances in the precision sciences.
Two-octave frequency combs from all-silica-fiber implementation

Abstract:Mid-infrared frequency comb spectroscopy enables measurement of molecular at megahertz spectral resolution, sub-hertz frequency accuracy and microsecond acquisition speed. However, the widespread adoption of this technique has been hindered by the complexity and alignment sensitivity of mid-infrared frequency comb sources. Leveraging the underexplored mid-infrared window of silica fibers presents a promising approach to address these challenges. In this study, we present the first experimental demonstration and quantitative numerical description of mid-infrared frequency comb generation in silica fibers. Our all-silica-fiber frequency comb spans over two octaves (0.8 $\mu$m to 3.5 $\mu$m) with a power output of 100 mW in the mid-infrared region. The amplified quantum noise is suppressed using four-cycle (25 fs) driving pulses, with the carrier-envelope offset frequency exhibiting a signal-to-noise ratio of 40 dB and a free-running bandwidth of 90 kHz. Our developed model provides quantitative guidelines for mid-infrared frequency comb generation in silica fibers, enabling all-fiber frequency comb spectroscopy in diverse fields such as organic synthesis, pharmacokinetics processes, and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs, coherent light sources that connect optical frequencies with microwave oscillations, have become the enabling tool for precision spectroscopy, optical clockwork and attosecond physics over the past decades. Current benchmark systems are self-referenced femtosecond mode-locked lasers, but four-wave-mixing in high-Q resonators have emerged as alternative platforms. Here we report the generation and full stabilization of CMOS-compatible optical frequency combs. The spiral microcomb's two degrees-of-freedom, one of the comb line and the native 18 GHz comb spacing, are first simultaneously phase-locked to known optical and microwave references. Second, with pump power control, active comb spacing stabilization improves the long-term stability by six orders-of-magnitude, reaching an instrument-limited 3.6 mHz/sqrt(t) residual instability. Third, referencing thirty-three of the nitride frequency comb lines against a fiber comb, we demonstrate the comb tooth-to-tooth frequency relative inaccuracy down to 53 mHz and 2.8x10-16, heralding unprecedented chip-scale applications in precision spectroscopy, coherent communications, and astronomical spectrography.
