Abstract:Active modulation of light with large optical bandwidths (∼100 nm [1]) is required in photonic devices, such as modulators for fiber communications [1] and saturable absorbers for ultrafast pulse generation [2,3]. Present modulators use expensive materials, (e.g. LiNbO 3 [4], III-V semiconductors [5], and Ge on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) [6]), and are limited by narrowband operation (∼20 nm for quantum-confined Stark effect devices [7], or <0.1 nm for resonators [8]), or high loss (∼80% in Si Mach-Zehnder modulators [9]). Single layer graphene (SLG) can be transferred and integrated on a variety of waveguide systems (e.g. a-Si, Si 3 N 4 ) while offering a full-band operation [10]. In all-fiber platforms, including ultrafast lasers [2,3], high coupling losses (∼60% from fiber to SOI waveguide [6]) are driving development of fiber-based modulators. Ref. 3 reported an electrically controllable all-fiber optical modulator with a SLG transistor on a side-polished fiber. However, its gating speed was limited to∼300 Hz [11] due to the low mobility of the ionic liquid used for gating. Here, we report a graphene-microfiber modulator by integrating a microfiber onto a graphene (SLG plated) capacitor (GC). By varying the microfiber size and length we control the light interaction with the biased SLG plates. This can be used for active control of ultrafast laser working in continuous wave, Q-switching and mode-locking operations.

Abstract:We demonstrate ultrafast optical modulation using a single 1-μm-diameter graphene-decorated microfiber, which is fabricated with a convenient and controllable evanescent-field-induced deposition method. Benefitting from the significantly enhanced light-graphene interaction of the subwavelength transvers dimension of the microfiber and accumulation of the saturable absorption of the piled graphene flakes, the microfiber shows nonlinear saturable absorption with a peak power threshold down to 1.75 W (60 MW/cm2), with a measured response time of about 3.5 ps.

Abstract:We fabricate a microfiber knot-type ring resonator with a Sagnac loop reflector, and control the light velocity using the device. In this structure, light is reflected by the Sagnac loop and passes through the ring resonator twice. Thus, it possesses doubled transmission and group delay comparing with the microfiber ring resonator without the Sagnac loop. We experimentally demonstrate pulse advancement in an under-coupled microfiber knot-type ring resonator with a Sagnac loop reflector. Abstract:On-chip electro-optic and optoelectric dual modulation is realized by Xiaoyong Hu and coworkers (article number 1800374) using a ZnO nanowire covered photonic-crystal nanocavity. A weak 0.4-microwatt signal light induces large modulation-depth of 60% in the electric signal, while a small gate voltage of 1.5 Volt induces large modulation-depth of 75% for the signal light. This paves the way for achieving on-chip photon–electric signal interconversion, and multifunctional optoelectronic integrated devices.

Abstract:All-optical modulators have a wide range of applications and are in great demand for its potential in all-optical communications, interconnects and signal processing. Two-dimensional materials can modulate light with superior performance, MXene, one of the latest additions to the world of 2D materials, exhibits good electrical conductivity, excellent stability, and highly tunable electronicoptical properties. Thus, it is promising in practical photonic applications. In this work, an integrated all-optical modulator using MXene Ti3C2Tx inkjet-printed on a microring resonator is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Based on its strong photo-thermal conversion efficiency, the all-optical modulation was successfully realized with a tuning efficiency of 0.09 mW1 and a modulation depth of 7.8dB. The measured 1090 rise and decay time are 300 s and 90 s, respectively. It is believed that the proposed MXene-based all-optical modulation mechanism could pave the way for MXene to realistic on-chip applications.

Abstract:Graphene is an optical material of unusual characteristics because of its linearly dispersive conduction and valence bands and the strong interband transitions. It allows broadband light-matter interactions with ultrafast responses and can be readily pasted to surfaces of functional structures for photonic and optoelectronic applications. Recently, graphene-based optical modulators have been demonstrated with electrical tuning of the Fermi level of graphene. Their operation bandwidth, however, was limited to about 1 GHz by the response of the driving electrical circuit. Clearly, this can be improved by an all-optical approach. Here, we show that a graphene-clad microfiber all-optical modulator can achieve a modulation depth of 38% and a response time of ∼ 2.2 ps, limited only by the intrinsic carrier relaxation time of graphene. This modulator is compatible with current high-speed fiber-optic communication networks and may open the door to meet future demand of ultrafast optical signal processing.

Abstract:All-optical modulation has attracted increasing attention in photonics and optoelectronics for its great potential in all-optical communication, interconnects and signal processing. In this paper, an all-optical modulator based on MXene's strong photo-thermal effect is proposed. The microfiber stereo structure enhances the light–matter interaction length, and the polarization maintaining fiber improves the environmental stability of the modulator. The all-optical modulation was successfully used to realize all-optical phase modulation and intensity modulation. For phase modulation, a free spectral range of 1.3 nm and an extinction ratio of ~20 dB were obtained with excellent stability. For intensity modulation, the rising/falling time was 0.6/0.3 s. This stable and multifunctional all-fiber modulator is intrinsically compatible with the fiber system and has potential application in all-optical information processing.

Abstract:We demonstrate optical resonance from microfiber knots obtained by manipulating freestanding silica microfibers. Q factors as high as 57 000 with finesse of 22 are observed in knots with sizes less than 1 mm. The free spectral range of the resonator can be easily tuned by tightening the knot structure in air. The knot resonators are highly stable in water with Q factors up to 31 000 and finesse of 13. The possibility of supporting the knot resonator with a solid MgF2 substrate is also demonstrated.

Abstract:In this study, a tin monoselenide (SnSe)-based all-optical modulator is firstly demonstrated with high tuning efficiency, broad bandwidth, and fast response time. The SnSe nanoplates are deposited in the microfiber knot resonator (MKR) on MgF2 substrate and change its transmission spectra by the external laser irradiation. The SnSe nanoplates and the microfiber are fabricated using the liquid-phase exfoliation method and the heat-flame taper-drawing method, respectively. Due to the strong absorption and enhanced light-matter interaction of the SnSe nanoplates, the largest transmitted power tunability is approximately 0.29 dB/mW with the response time of less than 2 ms. The broad tuning bandwidth is confirmed by four external pump lights ranging from ultraviolet to near-infrared. The proposed SnSe-coated microfiber resonator holds promising potential for wide application in the fields of all-optical tuning and fiber sensors.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel micro-ring-resonator-assisted structure as an optical switch. This device couples two outputs of a 1x2 power splitter into a micro-ring resonator (MRR). The double-beam interference will occur in the MRR. If the phase difference between the beams and the coupling coefficients of MRR are set properly, the device can switch the light by applying phase shift on MRR. High extinction ratio or low crosstalk can be achieved, even if the modulation additional loss is large.

Abstract:This study proposes an all-optical phase modulator based on a compact fiber optic interferometer combined with TiCT MXene-incorporated PDMS. Due to the high photothermal conversion efficiency of MXene and the high thermo-optic coefficient of PDMS, changes in pump power can be effectively converted into refractive index (RI) variations in the PDMS. Then, by employing a fiber optic interferometer with a high RI response, ultra-sensitive all-optical phase modulation can be realized. The experimental results demonstrate that the resonant wavelength shift of the modulator with MXene-incorporated PDMS is 126 times higher than that of a modulator with single MXene deposition. Also, a maximum wavelength sensitivity of 14.57 nm/mW is achieved (equivalent to a phase sensitivity of 0.33π/mW); this excellent modulation performance is a great improvement on that of a previously reported fiber-based all-optical phase modulator. Furthermore, PDMS is also employed as a packaging layer to strengthen the device structure and restrict the heat in an enclosed space, which improves the heat utilization efficiency. The proposed device shows great potential in optical communication, optical filtering, sensing, and modulation applications.

Abstract:Abstract Two‐dimensional (2D) Ti 3 C 2 T x (T = F, O, or OH) MXene, a graphene‐like material, is successfully fabricated for an investigation in nonlinear optics. Its nonlinear refractive index ( n 2 ≈ 10 −4 [cm 2 W −1 ]) and third‐order nonlinear susceptibility (≈ 10 −7 [e.s.u.]) are experimentally confirmed by spatial self‐phase modulation (SSPM) techniques. Applying its strong Kerr effect, a novel all‐optical switcher based on 2D MXene is designed to realize the modulation of pump light to probe light. This indicates that MXene could act as an information converter in an optical light‐control‐light system. Meanwhile, probe light is induced by the pump light to excite diffraction rings, and the ring numbers of the probe light can be controlled to increase by the regulation of the other pump light. Through modulation of the pump light, the “ON” and “OFF” modes in the all‐optical switcher/modulator can be achieved. This work highlights the potential of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene materials applied in all‐optical switcher/modulators, which can be considered an important step toward MXene‐based advanced photonics devices.

Simulation and Optimization of Polymer Electro-Optic Microring Resonator Switches

Abstract:In terms of the coupled mode theory, microring resonance theory and electro-optic modulation theory, a reasonable project was proposed for designing an electro-optic switch based on the polymer microring, and the novel transfer functions were presented for analyzing the resonance process of the microring. By using these formulas, the simulation and optimization were performed under the resonant wavelength of 1550 nm, the results are as follows: the core size of the microring is 1.8 × 1.8 μm2, the confined layer between the core and the electrode is 1.1 μm, the thickness of the electrode is 0.15 μm, the radius of the microring is 15.2 μm, the coupling gap between the micoring and the channel is 0.16 μm, 300 rounds are sufficient for forming the steady resonance state, and the relative resonance time is about 147.4 ps. When the operation voltage is 0 V, the insertion loss of the drop channel is about 0.8 dB, and the crosstalk of the through channel is about -26 dB. When the operation voltage is 19.7 V, the insertion loss of the through channel is about 0.34 dB, and the crosstalk of the drop channel is about -20 dB.
