Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites are emerging as promising emitting materials due to their narrow full-width at half-maximum emissions, color tunability, and high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs). However, the thermal generation of free charges at room temperature results in a low radiative recombination rate and an excitation intensity-dependent PLQY, which is associated with the trap density. Here, we report perovskite films composed of uniform nano-sized single crystals (average diameter = 31.7 nm) produced by introducing bulky amine ligands and performing the growth at a lower temperature. By effectively controlling the crystal growth, we maximized the radiative bimolecular recombination yield by reducing the trap density and spatially confining the charges. Finally, highly bright and efficient green emissive perovskite light-emitting diodes that do not suffer from electroluminescence blinking were achieved with a luminance of up to 55,400 cd m-2, current efficiency of 55.2 cd A-1, and an external quantum efficiency of 12.1%.

Abstract:Organolead halide perovskites (e.g., CH3NH3PbI3) have caught tremendous attention for their excellent optoelectronic properties and applications, especially as the active material for solar cells. Perovskite crystal quality and dimension is crucial for the fabrication of high‐performance optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices. Herein the controlled synthesis of organolead halide perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 nanoplatelets on SiO2/Si substrates is investigated via a convenient two‐step vapor transport deposition technique. The thickness and size of the perovskite can be well‐controlled from few‐layers to hundred nanometers by altering the synthesis time and temperature. Raman characterizations reveal that the evolutions of Raman peaks are sensitive to the thickness. Furthermore, from the time‐resolved photoluminescence measurements, the best optoelectronic performance of the perovskite platelet is attributed with thickness of ≈30 nm to its dominant longest lifetime (≈4.5 ns) of perovskite excitons, which means lower surface traps or defects. This work supplies an alternative to the synthesis of high‐quality organic perovskite and their possible optoelectronic applications with the most suitable materials.

Abstract:Organic–inorganic hybrid bismuth halides, as essential members of the lead-free family, have attracted much attention due to their unique properties. However, the growth of bismuth-based single crystals with potentially low defect density has encountered many challenges, such as intractable rapid crystallization, the use of toxic organic solvents, and halide oxidation caused by prolonged heating. Herein, we developed a liquid phase diffusion method to prepare large-sized one-dimensional hybrid bismuth single crystals. Adopting this method, centimeter-sized (1,5-pentanediamine)BiI 5 single crystals were harvested, which possess a hole trap density as low as 1.31 × 10 9 cm −3 and a carrier mobility reaching 28.2 cm 2 V −1 s −1 . The X-ray detectors based on (1,5-pentanediamine)BiI 5 single crystals exhibit a sensitivity value of 8120 μC Gy air −1 cm −2 at −80 V. This work provided a new strategy for the growth of bismuth-based perovskite single crystals and inspired the growth of other hybrid perovskite materials.

Abstract:Although their zero- to two-dimensional counterparts are well known, three-dimensional chiral hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite single crystals have remained difficult because they contain no chiral components and their crystal phases belong to centrosymmetric achiral point groups. Here we report a general approach to grow single-crystalline 3D lead halide perovskites with chiroptical activity. Taking MAPbBr 3 (MA, methylammonium) perovskite as a representative example, whereas achiral MAPbBr 3 crystallized from precursors in solution by inverse temperature crystallization method, the addition of micro- or nanoparticles as nucleating agents promoted the formation of chiral crystals under a near equilibrium state. Experimental characterization supported by calculations showed that the chirality of the 3D APbX 3 (where A is an ammonium ion and X is Cl, Br or mixed Cl–Br or Br–I) perovskites arises from chiral patterns of the A-site cations and their interaction with the [PbX 6 ] 4− octahedra in the perovskite structure. The chiral structure obeys the lowest-energy principle and thereby thermodynamically stable. The chiral 3D hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites served in a circularly polarized light photodetector prototype successfully.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, research on organic‐inorganic lead halide two‐dimensional (2D) perovskites has been blossoming. 2D perovskites have completely different layered structures from three‐dimensional perovskites, with interleaved organic and inorganic layers, leading to 2D perovskite materials being more stable and possessing anisotropic electrical transport. Meanwhile, 2D organic‐inorganic lead halide perovskite single crystals are receiving increasing attention because of their remarkable properties, such as long charge carrier lifetime, low defect density, and high photoluminescence quantum yield, increasing their potential for optoelectronic applications. Previously, a series of material systems based 2D perovskites single crystals has been synthesized and applied in various device applications. In this review, the preparation methods of organic‐inorganic lead halide 2D perovskite single crystals, the growth principles, their photoelectric properties and several device applications are discussed. image

Abstract:Large‐size crystals of organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites (e.g., CH3NH3PbX3, X = Cl, Br, I) have gained wide attention since their spectacular progress on optoelectronic technologies. Although presenting brilliant semiconducting properties, a serious concern of the toxicity in these lead‐based hybrids has become a stumbling block that limits their wide‐scale applications. Exploring lead‐free hybrid perovskite is thus highly urgent for high‐performance optoelectronic devices. Here, a new lead‐free perovskite hybrid (TMHD)BiBr5 (TMHD = N,N,N,N‐tetramethyl‐1,6‐hexanediammonium) is prepared from facile solution process. Emphatically, inch‐size high‐quality single crystals are successfully grown, the dimensions of which reach up to 32 × 24 × 12 mm3. Furthermore, the planar arrays of photodetectors based on bulk lead‐free (TMHD)BiBr5 single crystals are first fabricated, which shows sizeable on/off current ratios (≈103) and rapid response speed (τrise = 8.9 ms and τdecay = 10.2 ms). The prominent device performance of (TMHD)BiBr5 strongly underscores the lead‐free hybrid perovskite single crystals as promising material candidates for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites (HOIPs) possess significant photoelectric characteristics for solar energy conversion, but the presence of lead causes issues for eco-friendly applications. Halide double perovskites represent a green option for applications in optoelectronic fields, especially X-ray detection systems. Despite great efforts, the exploration of large-size lead-free iodide-based hybrid double perovskite single crystals for X-ray detection has been unsuccessful. Herein, we demonstrate that a large single crystal of the 2D (two-dimensional) semiconducting perovskite (C6H16N2)2CuBiI8·0.5H2O can serve as an X-ray detection candidate. The perovskite crystal, as large as 35 × 31 × 3 mm3, was grown using a low-cost, simple cooling solution approach. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a centimeter-sized 2D BiCu iodide double perovskite single crystal has been used for X-ray detection. The perovskite crystal exhibited unique properties for X-ray detection, such as a significant X-ray absorption coefficient, considerable μτ product, and low trap density. Moreover, X-ray detection with 5.51 μCGyair-1 cm-2 was achieved based on a single crystal. This work opens new ways to explore specially designed organic cations for stabilizing 2D HOIPs that show great potential in optoelectronics.

Wafer-scale growth of large arrays of perovskite microplate crystals for functional electronics and optoelectronics

Abstract:Methylammonium lead iodide perovskite has attracted intensive interest for its diverse optoelectronic applications. However, most studies to date have been limited to bulk thin films that are difficult to implement for integrated device arrays because of their incompatibility with typical lithography processes. We report the first patterned growth of regular arrays of perovskite microplate crystals for functional electronics and optoelectronics. We show that large arrays of lead iodide microplates can be grown from an aqueous solution through a seeded growth process and can be further intercalated with methylammonium iodide to produce perovskite crystals. Structural and optical characterizations demonstrate that the resulting materials display excellent crystalline quality and optical properties. We further show that perovskite crystals can be selectively grown on prepatterned electrode arrays to create independently addressable photodetector arrays and functional field effect transistors. The ability to grow perovskite microplates and to precisely place them at specific locations offers a new material platform for the fundamental investigation of the electronic and optical properties of perovskite materials and opens a pathway for integrated electronic and optoelectronic systems.
Li+ion Induced Three-Dimensional Aggregation Growth of Single-Crystal Perovskite Octahedrons

Abstract:Li+ ions were introduced into a hydrothermal system as surfactants to tailor the growth of perovskite tetragonal PbTiO3 (PT) nanocrystals, giving rise to single-crystal octahedrons with {111} facets exposed. Systematic investigations reveal that single-crystal PT octahedrons were formed via a three-dimensional (3D) aggregation growth process. In the initial stage, the intermediate phase primary nanoparticles, with a size of 2-5 nm, aggregated to form an octahedral shaped particle agglomeration with a size of 20-50 nm; then, the particle crystallized via an oriented attachment (OA) mechanism, resulting in the observed singlecrystal PT octahedrons. During this process, the interplay of Li+ ions and the electrostatic force of the primary nanoparticles are essential for octahedral aggregation and subsequent crystallization. Moreover, the concentration of Li+ ions has been demonstrated to significantly modify the growth of PT, leading to nano-structures with various shapes from hexahedral particles to cubic conglomerates to cuboids. These nanostructures demonstrate shape-dependent visible light photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:The hybrid perovskite CH3NH3PbX3 (X= Cl, Br, I) is a promising material for developing novel optoelectronic devices. Owing to the intrinsic non-layer structure, it remains challenging to synthesize molecularly thin CH3NH3PbX3 with large size. Here, we report a low-cost and highly efficient fabrication route to obtain large-scale single-crystalline 2D CH3NH3PbX3 perovskites on a mica substrate via liquid epitaxy. The 2D perovskite is characterized as 8 nm in thickness and hundreds of micrometers in lateral size. First-principles calculations suggest the strong potassium-halogen interactions at the perovskite/mica interface lower the interface energy of perovskites, driving their fast in-plane growth. Spectroscopic investigations reveal 2D CH3NH3PbBr3 possess small exciton binding energy of 30 meV, allowing a superior visible-light photodetector with a photoresponsivity of 126 A/W and a bandwidth exceeded 80 kHz. These features demonstrate that liquid epitaxy is a bottom-up approach to fabricate the non-layer structured 2D perovskites, which offer a new material platform for the device applications and fundamental investigations.

Abstract:As a new generation of photoelectric materials, organic–inorganic halide perovskites have been widely used in photodetectors, solar cells and other fields, but most of the current mainstream applications are thin film materials. Compared with polycrystalline thin films, perovskite single crystals have fewer grain boundaries and relatively stable electron and hole transport, and are ideal materials for optoelectronic devices. To realize the controllable growth of CH 3 NH 3 PbBr 3 (MAPbBr 3 ) crystals, understand their growth mechanism, and reflect the inherent physical and chemical properties of the material, a new type of internal growth temperature control and external circulation cooling growth system was developed in this paper, which can accurately control the temperature change during crystal growth. The size of the grown MAPbBr 3 single crystal reaches 62 × 58 × 23 mm 3 , which is the largest single crystal reported to date. The measured single crystal absorption cut-off edge, optical band gap, and carrier lifetime are superior to the traditional simple inverse temperature crystallization (ITC) method, which will help its deep applications in photovoltaics, optoelectronics, and X-ray imaging.

Abstract:All-inorganic lead halide perovskites have attracted tremendous interest for their excellent stability when compared with hybrid perovskites. Here we report a large-area growth of monocrystalline all-inorganic perovskite thin films and further patterning them into heterostructure arrays. We show that highly oriented CsPbBr3 microcrystal domains can be readily grown on muscovite mica substrates with a well-defined epitaxial relationship, which can further expand and eventually merge into large-area monocrystalline CsPbBr3 thin films with an excellent optical quality. Taking a step further, we show the large-area CsPbBr3 thin film can be further patterned and selectively transformed into CsPbI3 using a selective anion-exchange process to produce CsPbBr3–CsPbI3 lateral heterostructure arrays with spatially modulated photoluminescence emission and an apparent current rectification behavior. Abstract:The chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method is a dry approach that can produce high quality crystals and thin films at large scale which can be easily adapted by industry. In this work, CVD technology is employed to grow high quality, large size all‐inorganic cesium lead bromide perovskite crystalline film for the first time. The obtained films have millimeter size crystalline domains with high phase purity. The growth kinetics are examined in detail by optical microscopy and X‐ray diffraction. The deposition rate and growth temperature are found to be the key parameters allowing to achieve large scale crystal growth. The large crystalline grains exhibit exceptional optical properties including negligible Stokes shift and uniform photoluminescence over a large scale. This suggests a high degree of crystallinity free from internal strain or defects. A lateral diode within one large crystalline grain is further fabricated and significant photo‐generated voltage and short circuit current are observed, suggesting highly efficient carrier transport and collections without scattering within the grain. This demonstration suggests that the CVD grown all‐inorganic perovskite thin films enable a promising fabrication route suitable for photovoltaic or photo‐detector applications.

Abstract:Lead-free organic-inorganic hybrid bismuth halides have been recognized as promising alternatives to lead-based perovskites for non-toxic and environmentally-friendly optoelectronic applications. These materials showcase unique optoelectronic properties, ascribed to their low-dimensional electronic structures, such as a long carrier lifetime, a strong quantum-well effect, self-trapped states, and good stability. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the structure dependency of these properties. Investigations of hybrid bismuth halides are thus highly urgent in the pursuit of developing functional optoelectronic devices utilizing these properties. Herein, we report a new one-dimensional (1D) polymeric organic-inorganic hybrid bismuth halide, PDABiI5 (PDA=1,3-propane diammonium), which forms single crystals of centimeter size with a narrow optical bandgap of 1.77 eV. Interestingly, a reversible moisture-induced dimensional transformation was observed on 1D PDABiI5 through its conversion into 0D dimeric (PDA)2Bi2I10·2H2O, coming with a significant bandgap widening and photoluminescence shifts. This transformation is attributed to water molecules forming hydrogen bonds with the ammonium groups, promoting the deformation of Bi−I bonds from [BiI52-]n chains to edge-sharing [Bi2I10]4- dimers. This phenomenon presents exciting prospects for environmentally responsive device applications. Furthermore, optoelectronic characterizations demonstrated a long carrier lifetime exceeding 2 μs, a defect density of 1.49 x 1010 cm−3 and a high μτ product of 4.06 x 10-4 cm2V−1. This work provides insights into the unique properties of PDABiI5 and (PDA)2Bi2I10·2H2O and their structure-property correlation, and offers promising avenues for the development of eco-friendly and functional optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:The diversity of organic cations greatly enriched the species of 2D perovskites; traditional 2D Ruddlesden‐Popper (RP) and Dion‐Jacobson (DJ) perovskites are synthesized by two different organic amines. Here, according to the difference in pKa values between conjugated acids of monoprotonated and biprotonated 4‐(2‐Aminoethyl)pyridine (4AEPy) ions, we report the 2D perovskites of RP (4AEPy)2PbI4 and DJ (4AEPy)PbI4 from same organic amine, which can realize reversible transformation under the treatment of HI and NH3, respectively. The interaction of N‐H···N hydrogen bond between adjacent organic molecules in (4AEPy)2PbI4 leads to the bending conformation of ethylamine groups, which results in a 2.4 Å reduction in layer spacing compared to typical phenylethylamine lead iodine ((PEA)2PbI4) 2D perovskite. Besides, the ethylamine groups of organic layers in (4AEPy)PbI4 are deeply inserted into octahedral cavities and directly participate in the construction of the conduction band minimum, which leads to a small exciton binding energy of 27.3 meV. The stronger coupling between the organic and inorganic layers and the minor exciton binding energy can promote the DJ phase to possess a more stable structure and better optoelectronic properties. We further compared their optoelectronic performance of single crystal counterparts, and (4AEPy)PbI4 device displays better light response and X‐ray detection capability with a high sensitivity of 5627 μC Gyair−1cm−2 and the lowest detectable dose rate of 20 nGyairs−1. One-dimensional corner-sharing perovskites: Syntheses, structural evolutions and tunable photoluminescence properties

Abstract:In recent years, organic-inorganic hybrid lead halide perovskites have emerged as a highly promising class of light emitting diodes (LEDs) due to their diverse structures and promising properties. Herein, by choosing various organic molecules as cations, we successfully constructed a series of 1D perovskites of [PMDETA]PbBr5, [PMDETA]PbCl5, [DMPZ][MA]PbBr5, [EEDA][MA]PbCl5, [EPZ][MA]PbCl5 and [EPZ]3Pb2Br10. Under the different structural directing effects of organic cations, these 1D perovskites feature three different kinds of linear or zigzag 1D [PbX5]3− chains based on purely corner-shared octahedrons. As expected, these 1D perovskites exhibit tunable broadband light emissions from blue to yellow spectral range stemming from the self-trapped excitons based on systematical characterizations including time-resolved, temperature-dependent PL emissions and theoretical calculations. This work provides crystal structural engineering for low-dimensional perovskites and paves a new way to regulate the luminescent properties.

Abstract:The 2D Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) perovskites Cs2PbI2Cl2 (Pb-based, n = 1) and Cs2SnI2Cl2 (Sn-based, n = 1) stand out as unique and rare instances of entirely inorganic constituents within the more expansive category of organic/inorganic 2D perovskites. These materials have recently garnered significant attention for their strong UV-light responsiveness, exceptional thermal stability, and theoretically predicted ultrahigh carrier mobility. In this study, we synthesized Pb and Sn-based n = 1 2D RP perovskite films covering millimeter-scale areas for the first time, utilizing a one-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method under atmospheric conditions. These films feature perovskite layers oriented horizontally relative to the substrate. Multilayered Cs3Pb2I3Cl4 (Pb-based, n = 2) and Cs3Sn2I3Cl4 (Sn-based, n = 2) films were also obtained for the first time, and their crystallographic structures were refined by combining X-ray diffraction (XRD) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. DFT calculations and experimental optical spectroscopy support band-gap energy shifts related to the perovskite layer thickness. We demonstrate bias-free photodetectors using the Sn-based, n = 1 perovskite with reproducible photocurrent and a fast 84 ms response time. The present work not only demonstrates the growth of high-quality all-inorganic multilayered 2D perovskites via the CVD method but also suggests their potential as promising candidates for future optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) perovskite single crystals have risen to be prominent in the domain of optoelectronic materials due to their exceptional characteristics including notably low ion migration and defect density. A distinguishing feature is the strategic inclusion of larger organic amine spacer, alternately inserted between inorganic lead halide octahedral layers. This spacer effectively mitigates ion migration, even under higher bias voltages, which is particularly advantageous for X-ray detection. However, the simultaneous realization of multiple functions within this realm remains a formidable challenge. In this work, we have synthesized a high-quality organic spacer-incorporated single layered 2D perovskite single crystal of [CYP]PbBr 4 (CYP = 1-cyclohexylpiperazine). Our findings reveal the impressive potential of [CYP]PbBr 4 in the domain of X-ray detection, as evidenced by the ultrahigh X-ray sensitivity, long-term stability, and astonishingly low detection limit of 1.72 nGy air s -1 . Notably, [CYP]PbBr 4 also emits bright broadband yellow light with quantum yield of 30.3%, and the fabricated white LED achieves a high Color Rendering Index of 94.1, which surpasses that of commercially available white LED based on YAG: Ce 3+ (< 80).

Abstract:Single crystal thin films can achieve the balance between thickness and mobility, which is widely used in the field of optoelectronic devices. Herein, lead-free perovskite Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 single crystal hexagonal sheets with preferred orientation along (0 0 2) were prepared by solution method. The Bi element is positively trivalent without oxidation in the single crystal hexagonal sheets. The growth processes of Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 crystal including nucleation and crystal growth are revealed by in-situ optical and structural observation. The Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 single crystal hexagonal sheets demonstrate excellent stability without encapsulation during long time exposure to the air. Obvious fluorescence quenching effect observed by steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence measurement indicates charge transfer from Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 to ITO electrodes. Planar photodetectors based on Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 exhibit good photosensitive property, reproducibility and stability during multiple switching cycles. This work is conducive to lead-free perovskite regulation and further applications in photoelectronic devices.
