Abstract:Highly luminescent methylammonium lead bromide (CH3NH3PbBr3) perovskite fibrous microstructure thin films have been fabricated using a perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride-containing antisolvent-mediated single-step fabrication method. Confocal microscopy of these thin films reveals homogeneous emission over the entire area, in contrast to the localized emission from the thin films fabricated by conventional methods. The antisolvent treatment produces pinhole-free, mazelike morphology with high photoluminescence yield. These films were incorporated as the emissive layer in thin-film light emitting diodes (LEDs), made using a low-temperature meltable and processable alloy as cathode. These LEDs gave luminescence efficiency of up to 50 Cd/m(2). The proposed LED structure highlights the prospects of using low temperature roll-to-roll processing for manufacturing perovskite-based solar cells and LEDs.

Abstract:Organolead halide perovskites (e.g., CH3NH3PbI3) have caught tremendous attention for their excellent optoelectronic properties and applications, especially as the active material for solar cells. Perovskite crystal quality and dimension is crucial for the fabrication of high‐performance optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices. Herein the controlled synthesis of organolead halide perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 nanoplatelets on SiO2/Si substrates is investigated via a convenient two‐step vapor transport deposition technique. The thickness and size of the perovskite can be well‐controlled from few‐layers to hundred nanometers by altering the synthesis time and temperature. Raman characterizations reveal that the evolutions of Raman peaks are sensitive to the thickness. Furthermore, from the time‐resolved photoluminescence measurements, the best optoelectronic performance of the perovskite platelet is attributed with thickness of ≈30 nm to its dominant longest lifetime (≈4.5 ns) of perovskite excitons, which means lower surface traps or defects. This work supplies an alternative to the synthesis of high‐quality organic perovskite and their possible optoelectronic applications with the most suitable materials.

Abstract:While indirectly patterned organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite nanostructures have been extensively studied for use in perovskite optoelectronic devices, it is still challenging to directly pattern perovskite thin films because perovskite is very sensitive to polar solvents and high-temperature environments. Here, a simple and low-cost approach is proposed to directly pattern perovskite solid-state films into periodic nanostructures. The approach is basically perovskite recrystallization through phase transformation with the presence of a periodic mold on an as-prepared solid-state perovskite film. Interestingly, this study simultaneously achieves not only periodically patterned perovskite nanostructures but also better crystallized perovskites and improved optical properties, as compared to its thin film counterpart. The improved optical properties can be attributed to the light extraction and increased spontaneous emission rate of perovskite gratings. By fabricating light-emitting diodes using the periodic perovskite nanostructure as the emission layers, approximately twofold higher radiance and lower threshold than the reference planar devices are achieved. This work opens up a new and simple way to fabricate highly crystalline and large-area perovskite periodic nanostructures for low-cost production of high-performance optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:The hybrid perovskite CH3NH3PbX3 (X= Cl, Br, I) is a promising material for developing novel optoelectronic devices. Owing to the intrinsic non-layer structure, it remains challenging to synthesize molecularly thin CH3NH3PbX3 with large size. Here, we report a low-cost and highly efficient fabrication route to obtain large-scale single-crystalline 2D CH3NH3PbX3 perovskites on a mica substrate via liquid epitaxy. The 2D perovskite is characterized as 8 nm in thickness and hundreds of micrometers in lateral size. First-principles calculations suggest the strong potassium-halogen interactions at the perovskite/mica interface lower the interface energy of perovskites, driving their fast in-plane growth. Spectroscopic investigations reveal 2D CH3NH3PbBr3 possess small exciton binding energy of 30 meV, allowing a superior visible-light photodetector with a photoresponsivity of 126 A/W and a bandwidth exceeded 80 kHz. These features demonstrate that liquid epitaxy is a bottom-up approach to fabricate the non-layer structured 2D perovskites, which offer a new material platform for the device applications and fundamental investigations.

Abstract:Methylammonium lead iodide perovskite has attracted intensive interest for its diverse optoelectronic applications. However, most studies to date have been limited to bulk thin films that are difficult to implement for integrated device arrays because of their incompatibility with typical lithography processes. We report the first patterned growth of regular arrays of perovskite microplate crystals for functional electronics and optoelectronics. We show that large arrays of lead iodide microplates can be grown from an aqueous solution through a seeded growth process and can be further intercalated with methylammonium iodide to produce perovskite crystals. Structural and optical characterizations demonstrate that the resulting materials display excellent crystalline quality and optical properties. We further show that perovskite crystals can be selectively grown on prepatterned electrode arrays to create independently addressable photodetector arrays and functional field effect transistors. The ability to grow perovskite microplates and to precisely place them at specific locations offers a new material platform for the fundamental investigation of the electronic and optical properties of perovskite materials and opens a pathway for integrated electronic and optoelectronic systems.

Abstract:Recently, organic-inorganic halide perovskites have sparked tremendous research interest because of their ground-breaking photovoltaic performance. The crystallization process and crystal shape of perovskites have striking impacts on their optoelectronic properties. Polycrystalline films and single crystals are two main forms of perovskites. Currently, perovskite thin films have been under intensive investigation while studies of perovskite single crystals are just in their infancy. This review article is concentrated upon the control of perovskite structures and growth, which are intimately correlated for improvements of not only solar cells but also light-emitting diodes, lasers, and photodetectors. We begin with the survey of the film formation process of perovskites including deposition methods and morphological optimization avenues. Strategies such as the use of additives, thermal annealing, solvent annealing, atmospheric control, and solvent engineering have been successfully employed to yield high-quality perovskite films. Next, we turn to summarize the shape evolution of perovskites single crystals from three-dimensional large sized single crystals, two-dimensional nanoplates, one-dimensional nanowires, to zero-dimensional quantum dots. Siginificant functions of perovskites single crystals are highlighted, which benefit fundamental studies of intrinsic photophysics. Then, the growth mechanisms of the previously mentioned perovskite crystals are unveiled. Lastly, perspectives for structure and growth control of perovskites are outlined towards high-performance (opto)electronic devices.

Abstract:Two-dimensional phenylethylammonium (PEA, C8H9NH3) Bi-Ag double perovskite (PEA)4BiAgX8 (X = Br, I) microplatelets are synthesized for the first time via a facile self-assembly recrystallization method. Absorption spectra of microplatelets exhibit direct bandgaps and different halide compositions show distinct morphologies and bandgap tunability. Field-effect transistors based on a single (PEA)4BiAgBr8 microplatelet display a p-type semiconducting behavior.

Abstract:Layered metal-halide perovskites, or two-dimensional perovskites, can be synthesized in solution, and their optical and electronic properties can be tuned by changing their composition. We report a molecular templating method that restricted crystal growth along all crystallographic directions except for [110] and promoted one-dimensional growth. Our approach is widely applicable to synthesize a range of high-quality layered perovskite nanowires with large aspect ratios and tunable organic-inorganic chemical compositions. These nanowires form exceptionally well-defined and flexible cavities that exhibited a wide range of unusual optical properties beyond those of conventional perovskite nanowires. We observed anisotropic emission polarization, low-loss waveguiding (below 3 decibels per millimeter), and efficient low-threshold light amplification (below 20 microjoules per square centimeter).

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic perovskites have recently attracted increasing attention due to their great environmental stability, remarkable quantum confinement effect and layered characteristic. Heterostructures consisting of 2D layered perovskites are expected to exhibit new physical phenomena inaccessible to the single 2D perovskites and can greatly extend their functionalities for novel electronic and optoelectronic applications. Herein, we develop a novel solution method to synthesize 2D perovskite single-crystals with the centimeter size, high phase purity, controllable junction depth, high crystalline quality and great stability for highly narrow dual-band photodetectors. On the basis of the different lattice constant, solubility and growth rate between different n number, the newly designed synthesis method allows to first grow n=1 perovskite guided by the self-assembled layer of the organic cations at the water-air interface and subsequently n=2 layer is formed via diffusion process. Such growth process provides an efficient away for us to readily obtain 2D perovskite heterostructural single-crystals with various thickness and junction depth by controlling the concentration, reaction temperature and time. Photodetectors based on such heterostructural single crystal plates exhibit extremely low dark current, high on-off current ratio, and highly narrow dual-band spectral response with a full-width at half-maximum of 20 nm at 540 nm and 34 nm at 610 nm. In particular, the synthetic strategy is general for other 2D perovskites and the narrow dual-band spectral response with all full-width at half-maximum below 40 nm can be continuously tuned from red to blue by properly changing the halide compositions.

Abstract:Regulation of perovskite growth plays a critical role in the development of high-performance optoelectronic devices. However, judicious control of the grain growth for perovskite light emitting diodes is elusive due to its multiple requirements in terms of morphology, composition, and defect. Herein, we demonstrate a supramolecular dynamic coordination strategy to regulate perovskite crystallization. The combined use of crown ether and sodium trifluoroacetate can coordinate with A site and B site cations in ABX 3 perovskite, respectively. The formation of supramolecular structure retard perovskite nucleation, while the transformation of supramolecular intermediate structure enables the release of components for slow perovskite growth. This judicious control enables a segmented growth, inducing the growth of insular nanocrystal consist of low-dimensional structure. Light emitting diode based on this perovskite film eventually brings a peak external quantum efficiency up to 23.9%, ranking among the highest efficiency achieved. The homogeneous nano-island structure also enables high-efficiency large area (1 cm 2 ) device up to 21.6%, and a record high value of 13.6% for highly semi-transparent ones.

Abstract:Hybrid quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) perovskites have attracted great interest due to their excellent photovoltaic and light-emitting properties, which enable the rapid development of high-performance perovskite-based solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and lasers. Although many efforts have been made to improve the quality and stability of organic-inorganic perovskites, the controlled synthesis of high-quality layered perovskites remains challenging. Here, single-crystalline quasi-2D (HA)2(MA)n-1PbnI3n+1 perovskites with layer numbers of n from 1 to 3 have been synthesized in a controllable manner, exhibiting stable lattice structures and tunable optical emission. Structurally, hexylamine (HA) with longer alkyl chains was used as an organic spacer in Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phase perovskites to improve the chemical stability of perovskites. Various ratios of precursor materials were adopted for separating pure and large-scale quasi-2D (HA)2(MA)n-1PbnI3n+1 perovskites, in which different layer-number perovskites with tunable band gaps were obtained with the modulated fluorescence lifetimes. Our lattice structural and fluorescence-lifetime characterizations of RP-phase perovskites provide critical information on the emerging quasi-2D perovskite-crystal systems and their fluorescence relaxation dynamics. The employed strategy to synthesize high-quality perovskites (HA)2(MA)n-1PbnI3n+1 is technically essential to develop the rising perovskite-based photovoltaic and light-emitting applications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) multilayered halide perovskites have emerged as a platform for understanding organic–inorganic interactions, tuning quantum confinement effects and realizing efficient and durable optoelectronic devices. However, reproducibly synthesizing 2D perovskite crystals with a perovskite-layer thickness (quantum well thickness, n -value) >2 using existing crystal growth methods is challenging. Here we demonstrate a synthetic method, termed kinetically controlled space confinement, for the growth of phase-pure Ruddlesden–Popper and Dion–Jacobson 2D perovskites. Phase-pure growth is achieved by progressively increasing the temperature (for a fixed time) or the crystallization time (at a fixed temperature), which allows for control of the crystallization kinetics. In situ photoluminescence spectroscopy and imaging suggest that the controlled increase in n -value (from lower to higher values of n = 4, 5 and 6) occurs due to intercalation of excess precursor ions. Based on 250 experimental data sets, phase diagrams for both Ruddlesden–Popper and Dion–Jacobson perovskites have been constructed to predict the growth of 2D phases with specific n -values, facilitating the production of 2D perovskite crystals with desired layer thickness.

The high performance can be attributed to the high crystalline quality of the heterostructures and the extremely large resistance in the out-of-plane direction. The synthetic strategy is versatile for other 2D perovskites, and the narrow dual-band spectral response with all fwhm < 40 nm can be continuously tuned from red to blue by properly changing the halide compositions.

Abstract:Hybrid lead halide perovskites with 2D stacking structures have recently emerged as promising materials for optoelectronic applications. We report a method for growing 2D nanosheets of hybrid lead halide perovskites (I, Br and Cl), with tunable lateral sizes ranging from 0.05 to 8 microns, and a structure consisting of n stacked monolayers separated by long alkylamines, tunable from bulk down to n=1. The key to obtaining such a wide range of perovskite properties hinged on utilizing the respective lead halide nanosheets as precursors in a hot-injection synthesis that afforded careful control over all process parameters. The layered, quantum confined (n small than 4) nanosheets were comprised of major and minor fractions with differing n. Energy funneling from low to high n (high to low energy) regions within a single sheet, mediated by the length of the ligands between stacks, produced photoluminescent quantum yields as high as 49 percent. These large, tunable 2D nanosheets could serve as convenient platforms for future high efficiency optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:All-inorganic lead halide perovskites have attracted tremendous interest for their excellent stability when compared with hybrid perovskites. Here we report a large-area growth of monocrystalline all-inorganic perovskite thin films and further patterning them into heterostructure arrays. We show that highly oriented CsPbBr3 microcrystal domains can be readily grown on muscovite mica substrates with a well-defined epitaxial relationship, which can further expand and eventually merge into large-area monocrystalline CsPbBr3 thin films with an excellent optical quality. Taking a step further, we show the large-area CsPbBr3 thin film can be further patterned and selectively transformed into CsPbI3 using a selective anion-exchange process to produce CsPbBr3–CsPbI3 lateral heterostructure arrays with spatially modulated photoluminescence emission and an apparent current rectification behavior.
