Abstract:Subwavelength grating metamaterial (SGM) waveguide is typically treated as a homogeneous medium without considering intra-waveguide reflection. However, this approximation is not always valid, especially in resonators. In this paper, we show that the reflection-induced mutual coupling between the clock-wise and counter-clock-wise resonant modes in a subwavelength grating metamaterial waveguide ring resonator (SGMRR) breaks the degeneracy of the two modes, leading to the formation of Autler–Townes splitting. This phenomenon could be leveraged to improve the detection limit of SGMRR-based sensors.

Abstract:Microscale cavities have been extensively studied for ultrasensitive sensing in recent years. However, highly sensitive sensors are generally accompanied by high noise level. In this paper, we propose to use mode splitting in subwavelength grating metamaterial ring resonators (SGMRRs) for self-referenced refractive index sensing. Due to the reflection in the subwavelength grating, the clockwise and counter clockwise propagating modes mutually couple to each other, leading to the lift of degeneracy. The wavelength difference between the split modes, which is sensitive to refractive index perturbation, forms an ultra-sensitive self-referenced architecture. We theoretically demonstrated that a self-referenced surface sensitivity of 21 pm/nm can be achieved with an effective suppression of thermal noise.

Abstract:Whispering gallery mode (WGM) optical microcavities trap light in micro-scale volumes by continuous total internal reflection which leads to enhancement of light intensity within a confined region and longer photon lifetime. Consequently, light-matter interaction is enhanced making the WGM resonator an extremely sensitive platform for the detection of perturbations in and around the resonator. Here, we report mode-splitting in monolithic ultra-high-Q WGM microcavities for real-time and in-situ detection of single nanoparticles. We investigate experimentally and theoretically particle detection and sizing at single nanoparticle resolution using the mode-splitting technique. Theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the experimental results. The mode-splitting effect provides a 'self-reference sensing' technique that can overcome the limitations of current resonator-based sensors and in the meantime keep the advantages offered by resonant structures for high-performance sensing.

Abstract:An optical whispering gallery mode（WGM） resonator supports degenerate counter-propagating modes and the degeneracy is lifted as mode splitting due to Rayleigh scattering. However, quantitative analysis becomes difficult if the resonance experiences weak scattering. Here we develop a spectroscopical method to identify an arbitrary small scatterer using the Fano interference-induced spectral response modification. Scattering information can be revealed by fitting the responses as a function of the field’s phase and intensity. In addition, we show that this modified response helps achieve an ultra-low detection limit for the mode-splitting-based nanoparticle detection method. This approach may be promising in the characterization of high-Q-factor devices, novel sensing methods, and quantum coupling system investigation.

Abstract:Using the single-scatterer-induced coupling mechanism of a pair of counterpropagating high-Q whispering-gallery modes (WGMs), we investigate the highly sensitive detection of single nonspherical nanoparticles. The nonspherical particle may produce distinct frequency splitting and additional damping for TE and TM WGMs. This polarization-dependent effect allows for studying the orientation of single biomolecule, molecule-molecule interaction on the microcavity surface, and possibly distinguishing different inner configurations of similar biomolecules.

Abstract:A microring resonator coated with a fluorescent high-refractive-index film provides a structure that supports whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) via the contrast in the refractive index. In the past, number, size, and refractive index of nanoparticles were analyzed by the degree of resonant mode splitting in the cavity. Compared with the small mode shift, this splitting is easier to detect and has strong anti-interference ability. However, there are several mechanisms for the mode splitting due to the different sizes of nanoparticles. The magnitudes of different mode splittings are quite different, which easily leads to confusion in spectral analysis. In this work, the mechanisms of resonant mode splitting are studied by the FDTD method combined with light field distributions and spectra. Field distributions of the symmetric mode and the asymmetric mode relative to the position of the nanoparticle for the fundamental order and second radial order were simulated. We first distinguished the splitting of the fundamental mode (0.010 THz) due to the backscattering of the particles from the separation between the fundamental mode and the high-order mode (1 THz) for the same particle (100 nm). In addition, fundamental mode splitting was used to estimate the size and number of particles, and these sizes were consistent with those in the design. This work demonstrates the potential application of microring cavities based on WGMs in single particle detection.

Abstract:The ability to detect and size individual nanoparticles with high resolution is crucial to understanding the behaviour of single particles and effectively using their strong size-dependent properties to develop innovative products. We report real-time, in situ detection and sizing of single nanoparticles, down to 30 nm in radius, using mode splitting in a monolithic ultrahigh-quality-factor ( Q ) whispering-gallery-mode microresonator. Particle binding splits a whispering-gallery mode into two spectrally shifted resonance modes, forming a self-referenced detection scheme. This technique provides superior noise suppression and enables the extraction of accurate particle size information with a single-shot measurement in a microscale device. Our method requires neither labelling of the particles nor a priori information on their presence in the medium, providing an effective platform to study nanoparticles at single-particle resolution.

Abstract:Metamaterials provide a good platform for biochemical sensing due to its strong field localization at nanoscale. In this work, we show that electric and magnetic resonant modes in split-ring-resonator (SRR) can be efficiently excited under unpolarized light illumination when the SRRs are arranged in fourfold rotationally symmetric lattice configuration. The fabrication and characterization of deep subwavelength (~λ/15) gold-based SRR structures with resonator size as small as ~ 60 nm are reported with magnetic resonances in Vis-NIR spectrum range. The feasibility for sensing is demonstrated with refractive index sensitivity as high as ~ 636 nm/RIU.

Abstract:A nanoscale resonator composed of two metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides and a split ring is investigated numerically. The multipolar plasmonic resonance modes can be excited, weakened, or even cut off by adjusting the split angle. These novel phenomena are due to the electric polarization in the split area. Odd modes exhibit when the electric field is polarized perpendicular to the split. The resonator acts as a LC circuit for the electric field polarized parallel to the split, in which even modes are excited. The capacitance diminished when the split depth is increased, and the resonance wavelengths of even modes exhibit blue shift. Our results imply an extensive potential for tunable multichannel filters and biosensor devices in integrated nano-optics.

Abstract:We investigate theoretically the mode splitting induced by an arbitrarily shaped Rayleigh scatterer attached to a whispering-gallery microcavity. The information including polar position, orientation, and polarizability tensor of the nanoparticle can be obtained through the mode-splitting signal. It is found that when the electric field of a pair of counterpropagating modes have different orientations and are not linearly polarized, both of the split modes experience frequency shift and linewidth broadening. The polar angle, at which a nanoparticle binds on the microsphere cavity, can be extracted by comparing frequency splittings of two fundamental TE modes. Moreover, the orientation and polarizability of the particle can be acquired by combining frequency splittings and linewidth broadenings of three modes which polarize the particle in different orientations. This work provides a comprehensive theory base for microcavity sensing of nanoparticles of arbitrary shape instead of nanospheres and could push nanoparticle detection towards quantitative characterization.

Abstract:Metamaterial resonators have become an efficient and versatile platform in the terahertz frequency range, finding applications in integrated optical devices, such as active modulators and detectors, and in fundamental research, e.g., ultrastrong light-matter investigations. Despite their growing use, characterization of modes supported by these subwavelength elements has proven to be challenging and it still relies on indirect observation of the collective far-field transmission/reflection properties of resonator arrays. Here, we present a broadband time-domain spectroscopic investigation of individual metamaterial resonators via a THz aperture scanning near-field microscope (a-SNOM). The time-domain a-SNOM allows the mapping and quantitative analysis of strongly confined modes supported by the resonators. In particular, a cross-polarized configuration presented here allows an investigation of weakly radiative modes. These results hold great potential to advance future metamaterial-based optoelectronic platforms for fundamental research in THz photonics.
Theoretical Study on the Lasing Plasmon of a Split Ring for Label-Free Detection of Single Molecules and Single Nanoparticles

Abstract:This paper reports the plasmonic lasing of a split ring filled with gain material in water. The lasing mode（1500 nm）is far from the pump mode（980 nm）, which can depress the detection noise from the pump light. The laser intensities of the two modes simultaneously increase by more than 10~3 in amplitude, which can intensify the absorption efficiency of the pumping light and enhance the plasmonic lasing. The plasmonic lasing is a sensitive sensor. When a single protein nanoparticle（n = 1.5, r = 1.25 nm） is trapped in the gap of the split ring, the lasing spectrum moves by 0.031 nm, which is much larger than the detection limit of 10 -5 nm. Moreover, the lasing intensity is also very sensitive to the trapped nanoparticle. It reduces to less than 1/600 when a protein nanoparticle（n = 1.5, r = 1.25 nm） is trapped in the gap.

Abstract:Optical resonators are fundamental building blocks of photonic systems, enabling meta-surfaces, sensors, and transmission filters to be developed for a range of applications. Sub-wavelength size (< λ/10) resonators, including planar split-ring resonators, are at the forefront of research owing to their potential for light manipulation, sensing applications and for exploring fundamental light-matter coupling phenomena. Near-field microscopy has emerged as a valuable tool for mode imaging in sub-wavelength size terahertz (THz) frequency resonators, essential for emerging THz devices (e.g. negative index materials, magnetic mirrors, filters) and enhanced light-matter interaction phenomena. Here, we probe coherently the localized field supported by circular split ring resonators with single layer graphene (SLG) embedded in the resonator gap, by means of scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM), using either a single-mode or a frequency comb THz quantum cascade laser (QCL), in a detectorless configuration, via self-mixing interferometry. We demonstrate deep sub-wavelength mapping of the field distribution associated with in-plane resonator modes resolving both amplitude and phase of the supported modes, and unveiling resonant electric field enhancement in SLG, key for high harmonic generation.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the mode-splitting phenomenon in a high-Q whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonator coupled to multiple subwavelength Rayleigh scatterers. It is shown that the phase factors of the WGMs play the central role in such a system. Unlike the single-scatterer case, these phase factors in a multiscatterer system significantly influence both the modal coupling strength and the scattering-induced loss of a pair of counterpropagating WGMs. We scrutinize the condition for observing the splitting of transmission spectra. The mechanism can be used for highly sensitive biosensing, and the size of nanoparticles that can be detected is extended down to tens of nanometers.

Abstract:Optical microcavities operating at exceptional points have a strong mode splitting response to small perturbations such as nanoparticles. The detection limit is susceptible to mode linewidth so that small nanoparticles cannot induce a mode splitting in the transmission or reflection spectrum. Here, we propose a sensing mechanism to avoid the limitation of mode linewidth on the detection limit. We show that a microcavity with two Bragg gratings generates bright and dark modes due to completely non-reciprocal coupling. Since the two modes are not degenerate initially, utilizing the dark mode intensity as a readout scheme significantly reduces the detection limit for small perturbations. This work opens up the way toward a new class of ultrasensitive nanoparticle sensor.

Abstract:Detecting the size of a single nanoparticle with high precision is crucial to understanding the characteristic of the nanoparticle. Traditionally, a nanoparticle as a perturbation enters the mode volume of a cavity, leading to eigenfrequency splitting that is proportional to the perturbation strength. Here, we demonstrate the single particle detection based on the anti-parity-time (anti-PT) symmetric indirectly coupled whispering-gallery mode (WGM) cavities, which can be tailored to operate at exceptional points (EPs) where the two eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenstates coalesce. Due to the complex-square-root topology characteristic at the EPs, the frequency splitting exhibits a square-root dependence on the small perturbation. When operating the system at such an EP, the anti-PT symmetric WGM nanoparticle sensor exhibits giant enhancement (≈3 orders) in frequency splitting compared with a traditional single WGM sensor with the same perturbation. With respect to the PT symmetric nanoparticle sensor, our research exhibits a real eigenfrequency splitting, which can be directly detected.
