Abstract:In central receiver systems, differences in designs and performances between open volumetric receivers have been established over the years, with a primary focus on the convective heat transfer coefficient. However, the other main parameter, the differential pressure, has not been thoroughly studied despite its significance. For that reason, in this research, the pressure drop is evaluated for dense wire meshes. In all the studies, a sensitivity analysis is conducted maintaining the temperature of the absorber at 300 K and varying the inlet velocity from 0.5 to 5 m/s. Darcy's law with the Forchheimer extension is employed in this work to estimate the differential pressure and obtained the individual correlations. Firstly, in order to understand the change in the pressure of a fluid that has passed through dense wire meshes used as volumetric receivers, a detailed CFD methodology is used to estimate the differential pressure compared to the experimental tests. The pressure drop correlation of the CFD methodology yields a maximum and average deviation with respect to the experimental tests of 3.6% and 1.2% respectively. Secondly, three individual correlations are established for the three wire diameters studied, 0.1, 0.4, and 0.7 mm. For wire diameters ranging from 0.1 to 0.7 mm with a fixed 80% single mesh porosity and staggered stack pattern in dense wire meshes, a generalised correlation based on the Ergun equation is developed. The generalised correlation shows a maximum deviation of up to 4.1% and an average deviation of up to 2.5% when compared to the CFD values obtained with the methodology developed.
