Abstract:Medical images play an important role in clinics. Machine learning has been widely used in the fields of computer vision and pattern recognition and computer-aided diagnosis with medical images become an active research topic. Efficient representation of the medical images or effective extraction of discriminative features from CT images is one of crucial steps in computer-aided diagnosis. Principal component analysis (PCA) is a subspace learning method and is widely used for efficient representation of data. The limitation of PCA is that a multi-dimensional data (e.g. an image or a video image) should be unfolded into a vector resulting in loss of spatial and spatial-temporal relationship of the data. In this paper, we proposed an efficient representation of multi-phase CT images based on a tensor-based subspace learning method known as generalized N-dimensional principal component analysis (GND-PCA). In the proposed method, the multi-phase CT image is treated a tensor without vector-unfolding for subspace learning. The core tensor obtained by GND-PCA is used as temporal and spatial features for focal liver lesion classification. Experiments show that in the case of fewer samples, GND-PCA achieved better results than conventional PCA and 2D-PCA, which is an extension of PCA.
Analytical Noise Treatment for Low-Dose Ct Projection Data by Penalized Weighted Least-Square Smoothing in the K-L Domain

Abstract:By analyzing the noise properties of calibrated low-dose Computed Tomography (CT) projection data, it is clearly seen that the data can be regarded as approximately Gaussian distributed with a nonlinear signal-dependent variance. Based on this observation, a penalized weighted least-square (PWLS) smoothing framework is a choice for an optimal solution. It utilizes the prior variance-mean relationship to construct both the weight matrix and the two-dimensional (2D) spatial information as the penalty or regularization operator. Furthermore, a K-L transform is applied along the z (slice) axis to further consider the correlation among different sinograms, resulting in a PWLS smoothing in the K-L domain. As a tool for feature extraction and de-correlation, the K-L transform maximizes the data variance represented by each component and simplifies the task of 3D filtering into 2D spatial process slice by slice. Therefore, by selecting an appropriate number of neighboring slices, the K-L domain PWLS smoothing fully utilizes the prior statistical knowledge and 3D spatial information for an accurate restoration of the noisy low-dose CT projections in an analytical manner. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method with appropriate control parameters improves the noise treatment without sacrifice of resolution.
Filtering Optimization in MDCT Domain Base on Spectrum Character of HRTF

Abstract:An efficient filtering algorithm of multichannel virtual surround processing in modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT) was proposed.The MDCT filter bank can be represented in a polyphase structure and further derived to a high order matrix representation.By using the property of sparse matrix representation and the large dynamic range of head-related transfer function (HRTF),an adaptive neighborhood algorithm was presented for fast filtering with HRTF in the MDCT domain.The width of a neighborhood can be adjusted according to the spectrum of HRTF in MDCT domain.Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm greatly reduced the implementation cost,and maintained same filtering quality.In order to compare with different multichannel virtual surround processing methods,a subjective listening test was conducted.The listening results reveal that the proposed approach can achieve basically same subjective quality as the traditional filtering methods.The complexity analysis of the virtual surround processing methods indicates that the proposed filtering algorithm of HRTF consumes minimal calculation,which is particularly suitable for audio compressed in MDCT format.

Abstract:Dual-energy computed tomography (CT) has become widely applied due to its advantages like reducing beam hardening artefacts and providing more accurate attenuation measurements. Compared with traditional CT (using single Xray spectrum), dual-energy CT performs much better especially when some material cannot be easily distinguished by one X-ray spectrum. When doing dual-energy CT reconstruction, it is a basic principal to fully exploit the information of the data from both high and low energies. Here we propose a novel dual-energy CT reconstruction method using the guided image filtering algorithm and the commonly used transmission image reconstruction method: separable quadratic surrogates (SQS). As a patch-based image processing algorithm, guided image filtering has nice properties of edge-preserving smoothing and relatively high computational efficiency. It can be used in structure transferring between two images, filtering-based feathering/matting and dehazing. On the other hand, the SQS algorithm is an ordered subsets algorithm for penalty likelihood image reconstruction in transmission tomography. It can rapidly decrease the objective function value in the early iterations. In this paper, the ideas of guided image filtering and SQS are explained. We study the basic principle and main advantages of guided image filtering and SQS, and tell how we combine these two methods to do dual-energy CT reconstruction. After that, we did computed simulation (with simulated Poisson noise) to validate our idea, and make comparison with other methods. The results show that the quality of both images can be improved in a satisfying convergence speed.

Abstract:x-ray computed tomography (CT) has been widely used in clinical diagnosis as a modality of medical imaging. To decrease the radiation dose patients suffering from, sparse-view CT has gained much attention in medical imaging field. In this paper, we propose to design a variational model based on dynamic optimal transportation and total generalized variation for CT reconstruction. This is a joint task involving inverse problem and template registration. The final state image of the optimal transport problem is unknown and needs to be reconstructed through CT inversion, while the given initial state can be regarded as a template to provide some structural information for the final one. Moreover, the existence and stability of minimizers to our proposed model are shown in continuous space. In discretization with the continuity equation, we utilize the well-known staggered grid in fluid mechanics and develop a first-order algorithm based on primal-dual method for numerically solving the proposed model. Finally, numerical experiments for sparse-view CT reconstruction are exhibited to show the performance of our proposed model in recovering images with high quality and structure preservation.

Abstract:An improved guided filter-based stereo matching algorithm was proposed to solve the problem of low accuracy and sensitivity to environmental change .The algorithm used the improved guiding filter to preprocess the raw images ; the gradient of the preprocessed images was combined with the Census transform in the matching cost computation .Furthermore ,an adaptive cross-based support window was constructed dependeding on the color similarity . The improved guided filter was adopted as the cost aggregation method . Accurate disparity maps were obtained after disparity refinement , which could achieve good performance in texture-less regions . The experiments on the Middlebury and KIT TI benchmark demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other filter-based methods ,which has better robustness and can be used in outdoor applications .In addition ,the computational complexity of the proposed method is independent on the window size ,which has good real-time performance .

Abstract:An efficient noise treatment, scheme has been developed to achieve low-dose CT diagnosis based on currently available CT hardware and image reconstruction technologies. The scheme proposed includes two main parts: filtering in sinogram domain and smoothing in image domain. The acquired projection sinograms were first treated by our previously proposed Karhunen-Loeve (K-L) domain penalized weighted least-square (PWLS) filtering, which fully utilizes the prior statistical noise property and three-dimensional (3D) spatial information for an accurate restoration of the low-dose projections. To treat the streak artifacts due to photon starvation, we also incorporated an adaptive filtering into our PWLS framework, which selectively smoothes those channels contributing most to the streak artifacts. After the sinogram filtering, the image was reconstructed by the conventional filtered backprojection (FBP) method. The image is assumed as piecewise regions each has a unique texture. Therefore, an edge-preserving. smoothing (EPS) with locally-adaptive parameters to the noise variation was applied for further noise reduction in image domain. Experimental phantom projections acquired by A GE spiral computed tomography (CT) scanner under 10 mAs tube current were used to evaluate the proposed smoothing scheme. The reconstructed imaged demonstrated that the smoothing scheme with appropriate control parameters provides a significant improvement on noise suppression without sacrificing the spatial resolution.

Abstract:The guideline of "as low as reasonably achievable" (ALARA) for radiation dose has attracted attention to sparse-view spectral computed tomography (CT) imaging. Any missing scanning view in any energy will reduce the quality of image reconstruction and material decomposition. Recently, a series of achievements have been made in optimizing spectral CT imaging based on traditional iterative models or deep learning methods. However, these works are independent or simply coupled, often neglecting the dependency relationships in spectral CT imaging. Moreover, interpretability and generalization ability are still the challenges facing the existing methods. Therefore, we combine the advantages of traditional models and deep learning methods to propose an interpretable hybrid-domain integrative transformer iterative network (HITI-Net) model for synchronously optimizing spectral CT reconstruction and material decomposition of sparse-view measurements. The model fully utilizes prior information in the fields of projection, image, and material while introducing the vision transformer to learn global and long-range image information interactions. Then, the interpretable objective function is solved by the alternating directions method of multipliers (ADMMs) and further optimized the network structure according to the derived expression. In addition, hybrid-domain sparse regularization terms and balance parameters are designed to adaptively learn during the training phase to enhance the generalization ability of the HITI-Net. In simulation and real preclinical experiments, the imaging results of HITI-Net are superior to other comparison methods, with more small features and sharp edges.

Pixel-Feature Hybrid Fusion for PET/CT Images

Abstract:Color blending is a popular display method for functional and anatomic image fusion. The underlay image is typically displayed in grayscale, and the overlay image is displayed in pseudo colors. This pixel-level fusion provides too much information for reviewers to analyze quickly and effectively and clutters the display. To improve the fusion image reviewing speed and reduce the information clutter, a pixel-feature hybrid fusion method is proposed and tested for PET/CT images. Segments of the colormap are selectively masked to have a few discrete colors, and pixels displayed in the masked colors are made transparent. The colormap thus creates a false contouring effect on overlay images and allows the underlay to show through to give contours an anatomic context. The PET standardized uptake value (SUV) is used to control where colormap segments are masked. Examples show that SUV features can be extracted and blended with CT image instantaneously for viewing and diagnosis, and the non-feature part of the PET image is transparent. The proposed pixel-feature hybrid fusion highlights PET SUV features on CT images and reduces display clutters. It is easy to implement and can be used as complementarily to existing pixel-level fusion methods.

Abstract:In this work, a hybrid reconstruction method is proposed to solve the problem of exterior CT reconstruction. A 2D filtering with data extrapolation method is used to overcome the data truncation problem in exterior CT. The result of 2D filtering is processed by a dual-dictionary learning method to reduce the limited angle artifacts and noise in the exterior CT reconstruction. Experimental studies with simulated projections were performed to evaluate the proposed algorithm. The results reconstructed using the proposed method shows improved image quality.

Abstract:Dynamic cerebral perfusion CT (PCT) is an effective imaging technique for the clinical diagnosis and therapy guidance of many kinds of cerebrovascular diseases (CVDs), but the large radiation dose imposed on a patient during repeated CT scans greatly limits its clinical applications. Achieving low-dose PCT imaging with the help of advanced and satisfactory imaging methods is needed. A kinetic-induced voxel-clustering filter (KVCF) is proposed in this work to help process noisy and distorted PCT images acquired from low-dose CT scan protocols. In this new method, the intrinsic kinetic information of objective PCT images is extracted and effectively utilized to construct an image filter for every PCT frame. The new method is validated using both simulated and clinical low-dose PCT data, and the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and feature similarity (FSIM) are applied for quantitative evaluations of both the dynamic images and the calculated hemodynamic parametric maps. Compared to several existing methods, the proposed KVCF method produces the best qualitative and quantitative imaging effects. With satisfactory performance and high interpretability, KVCF is proven to be effective and implementable in clinical low-dose PCT imaging tasks.
Noise Reduction for Cone-Beam Micro-CT by Fuzzy-Logic Based Non-Linear Filters

Abstract:In Micro-CT, the smaller voxel requires much higher dose to achieve an adequate signal-to-noise ratio compared to clinical CT. Thus, it necessitates a method that reduces statistical noise in order to improve dose efficiency. We have developed a fuzzy-logic based non-linear Gaussian (NLG) filtering for smoothing projection data before reconstructed. We propose a fuzzy-logic based edge detector to determining the degree of smoothing. Both the fuzzy membership function and fuzzy rules are defined in such a way that the performance of the edge detector is optimized in terms of its robustness to noise. Additionally, we use NLG filter to obtain the filtering weights depending not only on difference in pixel locations but also on difference in density values. Several filtering steps with different NLG parameters can effectively reduce noise without losing structure information. Results with phantom and animal data suggested that our method is useful for the image quality improvement and radiation dose reduction of the micro-CT.

Abstract:An improved algorithm of the tissue-specific adaptive texture filter proposed by Gjenna Stippel et al is presented based on experimental results of the multivariate texture classification for breast tumor ultrasound images.With the introduction of the fuzzy function,and the increase of the overlap area and the iteration number, this improved algorithm can reduce the noise in ultrasound images and provide an enhancement of the visual differ- ence between the tumor and the surrounding healthy tissue.This algorithm's performance was quantitatively com- pared with several other filters in the experiment.The comparison includes statistical characteristic parameters of breast ultrasound images and the precision ratio of the semi-automatic extraction of tumor boundaries respectively before and after the filtration.All results demonstrate the validity and the advantage of the algorithm.

Abstract:To study the method for the CT image enhancement of early-stage lung cancers.50 CT images of 10 patents with early-stage peripheral lung cancers were enhanced by wavelet transform combining with contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization(clear) or(anda)daptive filter noise removal depending on the image characteristics.Results showed that pulmonary nodules had sharp margin,clear internal density and peripheral signs(e.g.pleural indentation) after managementt;he margin of tissues and organs were clear,the arrangement were obvious and the definition of lung markings increased.The image quality improved greatly after management especially in the images which had unsatisfied data.This study provides some references for the similar research.

Abstract:In micro-CT, smaller voxels require much higher dose to achieve adequate signal-to-noise ratio compared to conventional CT, thus, necessitating a method to reduce statistical noise and then to improve dose efficiency. We developed a method for multi-scale filtration of micro-CT data before reconstruction. The study aims are to increase the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of image data while at the same time maintaining image quality, in particular spatial sharpness of the images. In our approach, each projection is decomposed into successive sub-bands representing different levels of resolution from coarse to fine. Within each sub-band, pixels are distinguished into high-contrast regions (edges) and smooth regions using a fuzzy logic operation. Anisotropic filters are then used to adaptively smooth the image data. The degree of smoothing is controlled by the factor obtained by fuzzy logic operation. Both the fuzzy membership function and fuzzy rules are defined in such a way that the performance is optimized in terms of its robustness to noise. The potential of our algorithm was evaluated using phantom and clinical data. It was shown that SNR could be improved by a factor of 4 at the same radiation dose without loss of sharpness or introduction of new image artifacts. Alternatively, on the basis of clinical performance, our method shows that the radiation dose can be significantly reduced while at the same time maintaining the noise level and the image sharpness. Additionally, our approach can be extended to other imaging methods as an efficient tool for edge-preserving noise reduction.
Performance evaluation of improved median-modified Wiener filter with segmentation method to improve resolution in computed tomographic images

Abstract:This study aimed to model and apply an improved median-modified Wiener filter (MMWF) with region growing (RG) segmentation technique in computed tomography (CT) images to improve the noise and blurring effects. To model the improved MMWF, the MATLAB program was used to provide an additional application of median filter and RG techniques from the smoothening process of Wiener filter. In addition, the kernel size of the improved MMWF was set to 7 × 7 and applied to abdominal CT images of the acquired whole body phantom PBU-50 (Kyoto Kagaku, Japan) with tube currents of 50, 100, 200, and 300 mAs, and quantitatively compared to images with conventional MMWF and without MMWF (noisy). Compared with noisy images, the coefficient of variation (COV) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the conventional and improved MMWFs improved by approximately 3.41 and 3.32 times, respectively, for the images at all tube current conditions. The improved MMWF showed improved separation between different tissues compared with noisy images even though the smoothening was performed on images with low-dose conditions (50 and 100 mAs). Moreover, a comparative evaluation with other conventional filters (median, Wiener, total variation, and non-local means) demonstrated the improved MMWF performance at low-dose conditions. The COV and CNR of the improved MMWF were overall balanced; however, the improved MMWF performed better than other filters to restore the boundary signal between the two tissues. In conclusion, the improved MMWF with RG technique could acquire CT images with improved characteristics by removing the noise and blurring effects.

Abstract:We show how the wavelet transform can be used to reconstruct multiscale image and local image. The filters of reconstruction are revised directly by wavelet filters in this algorithm and the reconstruction gives us various detail images and coarse images very quickly. Because of locality of wavelet transform, local image can be reconstructed by local date. We propose a simple algorithm that enhance image and removed noise by multiscal wavelet analysis and control of reconstruction coefficient in reconstruction. The algorithm provides a way of combining reconstruction and processing of image into a single reconstruction. Compared to a general algorithm, the algorithm can be used to speed up image reconstruction and improve quality of image.
A New Approach to Reconstructing Images in Fan-Beam Computed Tomography

Abstract:The hybrid algorithm developed previously for image reconstruction in fan-beam computed tomography (CT) can have more desirable noise properties and computational efficiency in comparison with the fan-beam filtered backprojection (FFBP) algorithm. However, the one-dimensional (1D) explicit interpolation along the radial direction involved in the previous hybrid algorithm can lead to a reduced resolution in the reconstructed image. In this work, we proposed a new hybrid algorithm that eliminates such an explicit 1D interpolation by performing the filtration directly in the data space. We used computer simulation studies to evaluate the relative performance of the new hybrid algorithm, the previous hybrid algorithm, and the FFBP algorithm. The results of these studies demonstrated that these reconstruction algorithms respond to the effects of data noise and aliasing differently, and that the image noise properties also are dependent on the fan-beam configurations. For fan-beam configurations with small focal lengths and large size of the field of view which can be used in micro-CT, the new hybrid algorithm appears to provide a good tradeoff between image resolution and image noise uniformity.
A window adaptive hybrid vector filter for color image restoration

Abstract:A novel window adaptive hybrid filter for the removal of different types of noise which contaminate color images is proposed. At each pixel location, the image vector is first classified into several different signal activity areas through a modified quadtree decomposition on the luminance of the input image, with only one empirical parameter required to be controlled. Then, an optimal window and weight adaptive vector filtering operation is activated for the best tradeoff between noise suppression and detail preservation. The proposed filter has demonstrated superior performance in suppressing several distinctive types of color image noise, which include Gaussian, impulse, and mixed noise. Significant improvements have been achieved in terms of standard objective measurements as well as the perceived image quality.
