Abstract:Despite the widespread popularity of growth curve analysis, few studies have investigated robust growth curve models. In this article, the t distribution is applied to model heavy-tailed data and contaminated normal data with outliers for growth curve analysis. The derived robust growth curve models are estimated through Bayesian methods utilizing data augmentation and Gibbs sampling algorithms. The analysis of mathematical development data shows that the robust latent basis growth curve model better describes the mathematical growth trajectory than the corresponding normal growth curve model and can reveal the individual differences in mathematical development. Simulation studies further confirm that the robust growth curve models significantly outperform the normal growth curve models for both heavy-tailed t data and normal data with outliers but lose only slight efficiency for normal data. It appears convincing to replace the normal distribution with the t distribution for growth curve analysis. Three information criteria are evaluated for model selection. Online software is also provided for conducting robust analysis discussed in this study.

Abstract:Working on product lifetime data is of significant importance for evaluating safety and reliability, predicting remaining useful life and formulating maintenance strategy or replacement policy. In practical applications, observed datasets often consist of failure data and randomly censored data, which are referred as general censored data. Meanwhile, inverse Gaussian (IG) distribution has been widely adopted to depict lifetime data because it not only can possess flexible expression formats but also can explain the mechanism of first hitting time from a soft failure viewpoint. Motivated by these two regards, this paper develops a novel method on best linear unbiased estimations (BLUEs) for general censored data. A three-parameter IG distribution type is adopted. A novel method is established to optimize the skewness parameter. Then, BLUEs of mean and standard deviation can be obtained. The proposed method can construct closed-form parameter estimations in linear functions of order statistics. The computation process has been further simplified for flexible applications. The frequently utilized maximum likelihood estimation method is also introduced as a reference for a better understanding. Comparative results of both comprehensive simulation study and empirical application illustrate that the proposed method can significantly enhance the estimation accuracy and keep a stable performance, because more life information can be extracted and adopted from the censored datasets.

Abstract:Growth curve models are widely used for investigating growth and change phenomena. Many studies in social and behavioral sciences have demonstrated that data without any outlying observation are rather an exception, especially for data collected longitudinally. Ignoring the existence of outlying observations may lead to inaccurate or even incorrect statistical inferences. Therefore, it is crucial to identify outlying observations in growth curve modeling. This study comparatively evaluates six methods in outlying observation diagnostics through a Monte Carlo simulation study on a linear growth curve model, by varying factors of sample size, number of measurement occasions, as well as proportion, geometry, and type of outlying observations. It is suggested that the greatest chance of success in detecting outlying observations comes from use of multiple methods, comparing their results and making a decision based on research purposes. A real data analysis example is also provided to illustrate the application of the six outlying observation diagnostic methods.

Abstract:Influence diagnostics for detection of influential data points are widely used in statistical modeling to gauge out their impact on various aspect of the analysis. We proposed a method for detection of influential observations in mixed linear model using MINQUE (1) for estimation of variance components and linear unbiased prediction (LUP) for prediction of random effects. The method is based on the analogue of the Cook distance statistics for detection of influential observations affecting both the fixed and random components of a mixed linear model. The method is illustrated with both simulated and the real data sets based on an experimental model for genetic analysis.

Abstract:A widely used growth curve model is considered without the assumption of equal error variances.Based on the generalized pivotal quantities of the unknown parameters,hypotheses of the equality of the fixed effects were discussed.The simultaneous confidence intervals for all pairwise differences and confidence regions of the fixed effects were given.Simulation results show that the typeⅠerror rates of the proposed test and the coverage probabilities of the proposed confidence intervals and regions are close to the nominal level.

Abstract:In statistical diagnostics and sensitivity analysis, the local influence method plays an important role and has certain advantages over other methods in several situations. In this paper, we use this method to study time series of count data when employing a Poisson autoregressive model. We consider case-weights, scale, data, and additive perturbation schemes to obtain their corresponding vectors and matrices of derivatives for the measures of slope and normal curvatures. Based on the curvature diagnostics, we take a stepwise local influence approach to deal with data with possible masking effects. Finally, our established results are illustrated to be effective by analyzing a stock transactions data set.

Abstract:To learn more about networks in reality, a novel growing network model with accelerating growth and with nonlinear kernels was put forward. By construction of a directed graph, a probability equation was derived based on the rate equation. From the analytical results, it is derived that approximate linear kernels are one of necessaries of scale-free. For sublinear, the degree distribution varies as a stretched exponential. While for suplinear, a single cell connects nearly to all other cells. Numerical simulation was given in the end.

Abstract:The logistic or S-shaped curve of growth is one of the few universal laws in biology. It is certain that there exist specific genes affecting growth curves, but, due to a lack of statistical models, it is unclear how these genes cause phenotypic differentiation in growth and developmental trajectories. In this paper we present a statistical model for detecting major genes responsible for growth trajectories. This model is incorporated with pervasive logistic growth curves under the maximum likelihood framework and, thus, is expected to improve over previous models in both parameter estimation and inference. The power of this model is demonstrated by an example using forest tree data, in which evidence of major genes affecting stem growth processes is successfully detected. The implications for this model and its extensions are discussed.

Abstract:An additive growth curve model with orthogonal design matrices is proposed in which observations may have different profile forms. The proposed model allows us to fit data and then estimate parameters in a more parsimonious way than the traditional growth curve model. Two-stage generalized least-squares estimators for the regression coefficients are derived where a quadratic estimator for the covariance of observations is taken as the first-stage estimator. Consistency, asymptotic normality and asymptotic independence of these estimators are investigated. Simulation studies and a numerical example are given to illustrate the efficiency and parsimony of the proposed model for model specifications in the sense of minimizing Akaike's information criterion (AIC).

Abstract:Growth curve models with different types of distributions of random effects and of intraindividual measurement errors for robust analysis are compared. After demonstrating the influence of distribution specification on parameter estimation, 3 methods for diagnosing the distributions for both random effects and intraindividual measurement errors are proposed and evaluated. The methods include (a) distribution checking based on individual growth curve analysis; (b) distribution comparison based on Deviance Information Criterion, and (c) post hoc checking of degrees of freedom estimates for t distributions. The performance of the methods is compared through simulation studies. When the sample size is reasonably large, the method of post hoc checking of degrees of freedom estimates works best. A web interface is developed to ease the use of the 3 methods. Application of the 3 methods is illustrated through growth curve analysis of mathematical ability development using data on the Peabody Individual Achievement Test Mathematics assessment from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 Cohort (Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, 2005).

Abstract:Growth curve models are widely used in social and behavioral sciences. However, typical growth curve models often assume that the errors are normally distributed although non-normal data may be even more common than normal data. In order to avoid possible statistical inference problems in blindly assuming normality, a general Bayesian framework is proposed to flexibly model normal and non-normal data through the explicit specification of the error distributions. A simulation study shows when the distribution of the error is correctly specified, one can avoid the loss in the efficiency of standard error estimates. A real example on the analysis of mathematical ability growth data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-99 is used to show the application of the proposed methods. Instructions and code on how to conduct growth curve analysis with both normal and non-normal error distributions using the the MCMC procedure of SAS are provided.

Abstract:The car-following behavior can be influenced by its driver's backward-looking effect. Especially in traffic congestion, if vehicles adjust the headway by considering backward-looking effect, the stability of traffic flow can be enhanced. A model of car-following behavior considering backward-looking effect was built using visual information as a stimulus. The critical stability conditions were derived by linear and nonlinear stability analyses. The results of parameter sensitivity analysis indicate that the stability of traffic flow was enhanced by considering the backward-looking effect. The spatiotemporal evolution of traffic flow of different truck ratios and varying degrees of backward-looking effect was determined by numerical simulation. This study lays a foundation for exploring the complex feature of car-following behavior and making the intelligent network vehicles control rules more consistent with human driver habits.

Abstract:A growth curve model (GCM) aims to characterize how an outcome variable evolves, develops and grows as a function of time, along with other predictors. It provides a particularly useful framework to model growth trend in longitudinal data. However, the estimation and inference of GCM with a large number of response variables faces numerous challenges, and remains underdeveloped. In this article, we study the high-dimensional multivariate-response linear GCM, and develop the corresponding estimation and inference procedures. Our proposal is far from a straightforward extension, and involves several innovative components. Specifically, we introduce a Kronecker product structure, which allows us to effectively decompose a very large covariance matrix, and to pool the correlated samples to improve the estimation accuracy. We devise a highly non-trivial multi-step estimation approach to estimate the individual covariance components separately and effectively. We also develop rigorous statistical inference procedures to test both the global effects and the individual effects, and establish the size and power properties, as well as the proper false discovery control. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the new method through both intensive simulations, and the analysis of a longitudinal neuroimaging data for Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract:By virtue of Liouville Theorem and unified colored-noise approximation approach, an approximate Fokker-Planck equation for a tree growth Logistic model subjected to cross-correlated colored noises is derived, and the steady-state probability distribution (SPD) function is obtained. The steady-state properties of the Logistic model are analyzed. We find the following: (1) the position of peak of SPD moves toward left side as D increases while the position of the peak moves toward the contrary direction with Q increasing; (2) the peak of SPD becomes narrow and grows in height as |λ| increases, and for the case of λ >0, the position of peak moves toward right as D increases, but it is opposite for the case of λQ increases.

Abstract:In general, growth models are adjusted under the assumptions that the error terms are homoscedastic and normally distributed. However, these assumptions are often not verified in practice. In this work we propose four growth models (Morgan–Mercer–Flodin, von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, and Richards) considering different distributions (normal, skew-normal) for the error terms and three different covariance structures. Maximum likelihood estimation procedure is addressed. A simulation study is performed in order to verify the appropriateness of the proposed growth curve models. The methodology is also illustrated on a real dataset.

Abstract:This paper proposes several case-deletion as well as local influence measures for assessing the influence of an observation for generalized partially linear mixed mod- els(GPLMM).The essential idea is to treat the latent random effects in the model as missing data and extend the MCNR algorithm by adding penalized spline to estimate the nonparamters.On the basis of the Q-function which is associated with the conditional ex- pectation of the complete-data log-likelihood,we generate generalized Cook Distance and generalized DFIT for the parametric and nonparametric part respectively.Four different perturbation schemes are discussed.One real illustrative examples are presented to prove the methodology.

Abstract:Motivated by a medical study that attempts to analyze the relationship between growth curves and other variables and to measure the association among multiple growth curves, the authors develop a functional multiple-outcome model to decompose the total variation of multiple functional outcomes into variation explained by independent variables with time-varying coefficient functions, by latent factors and by noise. The latent factors are the hidden common factors that influence the multiple outcomes and are found through the combined functional principal component analysis approach. Through the coefficients of the latent factors one may further explore the association of the multiple outcomes. This method is applied to the multivariate growth data of infants in a real medical study in Shanghai and produces interpretable results. Convergence rates for the proposed estimates of the varying coefficient and covariance functions of the model are derived under mild conditions.
