Abstract:Many researchers have brought forward different traffic continuity equations to perfect the theory set up by Lighthill and Whitham who applied conservation of mass to traffic flow and proposed the traffic continuity equation since 1950's. However, there has still been no uniform continuity hypothesis of traffic flow so far. For example, the L-W theory expresses the conservation of number of vehicles between two stations when no generation or dissipation of flow within a section. Apparently number of vehicles has analogy to mass in the equation, but concentration to mass in the follow-up researches. Momentum is defined to be product of mass and velocity in such subjects as physics and hydrodynamics, but density and velocity in classical traffic flow theory alone, whereas product of density and velocity actually is volume. This paper proposes a new relative viscosity hypothesis. Analogy relationship between traffic flow and fluid flow is adjusted. Based on continuum equation set up, viscosity momentum differential equation is derived. The concepts of relative level of service (RLOS) and relative traffic pressure saturation (RPS) are introduced to evaluating level of service (LOS) for urban freeway. The feasibility of evaluating level of service of highway by non-dimensional traffic pressure is analyzed and a large amount of field data collected by using traffic detectors on urban freeways in China are used to verify the hypothesis proposed in this paper. It is concluded that the observed data show that non-dimensional traffic pressure could be used to evaluate LOS.
